Welcome to Season 8, Episode 36 of the ParentingAces Podcast. In this week's episode, we hear from the 2019 ITA Division I Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award Winner Isaac Perez and his college coach Dan Oosterhous. Apologies for the poor sound quality - we recorded this episode while sitting outside during Arthur Ashe Kids Day and it was just a little noisy out there! Coming from a military family, it wasn't so far-fetched that Isaac Perez would look to the military academies to further his education and tennis career. While he was a solid 4-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, he knew he wanted to fly jets once he completed his college degree. Air Force Academy Men's Coach Dan Oosterhous said he could tell right away that Isaac would be a great fit for his academy and his team. He noticed leadership qualities in Isaac from the first time they met and was thrilled to nominate Isaac for the prestigious ITA award. You will hear from both Isaac and Coach Oosterhous about what's involved in recruiting at one of the military academies and how it differs from "civilian" programs. If you would like more information on how the military academies work, both in terms of academics and tennis, we will be doing a follow-up podcast with Coach Oosterhous very soon. In the meantime, you can contact Dan Oosterhous at Daniel.Oosterhous@usafa.edu. I know you all join me in wishing Isaac all the best as he pursues his dream of flying jets and defending our country. If he is indicative of all the men and women in our armed forces, we should all feel very well-protected! As always, a big thank you to Morgan Stone, aka STØNE, for our intro and outro music this season and congratulations to him on his latest performance in San Francisco! TRANSFORMATION IS A ROLLER COASTER. It’s that time a year where a lot of us commit to making changes in our lives. But sticking with resolutions is hard. Very few of us are consistently committed to ourselves. It is not easy. We have to think of new habits like a roller coaster. We’re building momentum to making the change. But then the roller coaster goes down. The dip is normal. When you’re feeling low, you have to know that you will climb back up. You have the forward motion to make it happen. To talk about this journey of transformation, I wanted to share a special presentation and Q+A from this year’s Summit of Greatness with an inspirational icon: Shaun T. He’s danced with Mariah Carey as well as Aaron and Nick Carter, and choreographed for USTA’s Arthur Ashe Kids Day, the NCAA Final Four Halftime Show and the movie Bring it on: All or Nothing. Shaun talks about the phases that we go through when we try and succeed. He shares the superpowers that you have to get in touch with to withstand the roller coaster of chasing a goal. Spirits are high on the new Tennis Podcast with David and Catherine back together on Fifth Avenue to preview the US Open.David may have just stepped off the plane, but Catherine has been in New York for a couple of days. In that time, she’s seen the brand-new Louis Armstrong Stadium, soaked up the joy of Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day and spoken to a number of players at the “Superbowl style” media day, including Andy Murray. What state of mind is he in? And how far can he realistically go this fortnight? On paper, Novak Djokovic has the draw from heaven, while Federer’s is a bit of a nightmare. Will we see them face off in the quarter-finals?We will also get our first look at the new partnership between Ivan Lendl and Alexander Zverev. Will Lendl be the difference-maker? On the women’s side, can Stephens pull off the rare feat (unless you’re Serena Williams) of defending her title? And how will Halep cope without the on-court coaching of Darren Cahill?Angelique Kerber, meanwhile, is looking relaxed. Can she win back-to-back Grand Slams? There’s also the possibility of Serena vs. Venus in the third round. But David and Catherine both think it might not happen.Elsewhere, there are some bold predictions and a couple of cameo appearances from two former British No.1s…David and Catherine will be back with daily shows throughout the US Open fortnight. With her debut EP, “Made Of,” released in March, bright-eyed southern beauty, Coco Jones continues to show the world what her growing fan base already knew: she is a spectacular talent of limitless potential. 15-year-old Coco is currently in the studio co-writing and recording all-new original music for her highly anticipated full-length album debut, but she’s not waiting until then to make things happen. Coco Jones most recently took home her first Radio Disney Music Award for “Funniest Celebrity Take” and also performed her top Disney radio requested song “World Is Dancing”. This summer, Coco was seen all over the U.S. touring with Mindless Behavior and then also with Austin Mahone in August and September. Coco’s performances could be seen on national television with major performances such as Arthur Ashe Kids Day and BET’s 106 & Park. Meanwhile, she’ll continue to make cameo appearances like her recent stint on Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie” alongside labelmate Bridgit Mendler. Coco’s video for “Holla at the DJ,” the EP’s debut single, has over 2.8 million video views and garnered praise from MTV news who likened Coco’s video performance to a “young Beyonce”. Recent acclaim includes her feature on Essence.com in “35 Under 35: Young, Black, and Amazing,” which places her among the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé.
