What drove one of the most consistent careers in tennis history? Hall of Famer Ivan Lendl credits his success to consistently showing up, believing in himself and putting in the work. In Episode 3's conversation with Chris Bowers, Ivan opens up about how absorbing experiences on court – such as being a ball kid for his Czechoslovakian countryman Jan Kodeš – led to mastering the intricacies of the sport. Despite the slew of major titles to his name, Ivan considers his learning experiences and versatility to be his greatest achievements. Ivan Lendl is an eight-time Grand Slam champion in singles, former world No. 1 player and winner of 100 professional titles. Cumulatively, Lendl spent 270 weeks atop the mountain as the best player in the world during a championship-laden 13-year span. For eight straight years (1982-89), tennis fans couldn't tune into a US Open men's singles championship match without seeing Lendl as one of the two finalists. He reached 19 major singles finals (third best all-time), won eight of them, including three at the US Open, three at the French Open and two at the Australian Open. Stratton Mountain may not be Vermont's oldest ski area, but its history is iconic. Tucked away at the resort is a collection of Stratton Mountain signs, photos, and posters that tell the story of this Southern Vermont ski area that opened in 1961. Over the past 54 years, Kimet Hand has collected everything from a bronzed tennis ball served by Ivan Lendl at Stratton's Volvo International Tennis Tournament to signs made by ski school director Henrich, who was also an artist and a musician who played in the Stratton Mountain Boys. Wie so vieles standen auch die beiden WTA-Turniere der letzten Woche unter dem Eindruck des russischen Angriffskrieges in der Ukraine. Dayana Yastremska, die zu Beginn des Krieges noch aus ihrer Heimatstadt Odessa fliehen musste, konnte in Lyon nach Erhalt einer Wildcard das Finale erreichen. Zwar unterlag Yastremska dort der Chinesin Zhang Shuai. Doch am Ende stand zumindest sportlich eine erfolgreiche Woche. Für Zhang war es der dritte Titel ihrer Karriere. Svitolina verliert knapp In Monterrey schien die Topgesetzte Elina Svitolina zu einem ähnlichen Erfolgslauf anzusetzen wie ihre Landsfrau in Lyon. In 1984 Leif Shiras made front page news across the globe when he upset Ivan Lendl at Queens Club. He rode that wave of notoriety all the way to the final, where he lost to John McEnroe in three sets. He reached 31 in the world, got to the Rd of 16 at Wimbledon, and was a member of the US Davis Cup Teams in 89 and 91 under coach Tom Gorman. Our Great Coach on this episode is Jan Kodeš. Jan is a former professional tennis player and coach. He won a total of 25 international singles and 31 doubles tournaments, the highlights were singles victories at the 1970 and 71 French Open and Wimbledon in 1973. In 1980 he was part of the winning Czechoslovakian Davis Cup team that featured Ivan Lendl, Tomáš Šmíd and Pavel Složil. From 1982-87 he was the non-playing Davis Cup captain. And in 1990 he was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.
