The indie-rock musician's albums inspire deep feelings and attract ever-bigger audiences, but in many ways she remains a mystery. Guests: New York's E. Alex Jung and Pitchfork's Cat Zhang.
Born in Japan to an American father and Japanese mother, singer/songwriter "Mitski" spent her formative years living in numerous countries around the world before her family finally settled in Chicago. It was during these early years, while never fully settling in any one location, or having a consistent group of friends, that "Mitski" discovered her musical passions, by spending every free moment teaching herself how to play Piano. After dropping out of film school to instead study music, her first two albums were completed before she graduated. With these self-released titles complete, she initiated her own solo tours, playing across the US in venues large and small, even cutting her teeth in small dive bar venues with tough crowds. In this episode of Roots to Grooves musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley explore "Mitski's" background, her creative approaches and they spin a selection of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
This week marked the long-awaited return of Mitski, who has been more or less quiet since the Be The Cowboy tour wrapped nearly two years ago. Now, the acclaimed songwriter is back with “Working For The Knife,” bringing with it the always-insane discourse around her music. The meat of this episode revolves around one of the biggest bands of the 21st century, Coldplay. With billions of streams on Spotify, Coldplay is almost a perfect poptimism-era rock band, in that they have no qualms with being a super pop band and doing whatever it takes to remain relevant (see: doing a song with BTS). After being nominated for Album Of The Year in 2019 with the double album Everyday Life, the band's new Max Martin-produced album, Music Of The Spheres, is due out next week.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging Illusory Walls, the epic new album from emo legends The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. Meanwhile, Steve is enjoying Seventeen Going Under, the new album from English singer-songwriter Sam Fender.ou can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news.
The second entry in our Musical May series is yet another notorious (but actually beloved) box office bomb, Josie and the Pussycats! We're joined by Haley Schreirer to discuss all things Pussycats! Just why did it take so long for Shelby to watch this movie? Why was this movie so absolutely hated in its day? Do we need to serve justice for Tara Reid's acting career? Does this movie have ties to Mitski's album Be The Cowboy? Did this movie radicalize an entire generation of children? And WHY are we talking about Trolls? PLUS Skye attempts to guess the plot of Mike Nichols' last feature Charlie Wilson's War in this week's What The Plot? segment. The good, the Riverdale, and the DuJour of it all on this week's episode!
In this episode, hosts Alex Nelson and Shaun Soman reflect on Mitski’s April 3, 2019 performance at The Sylvee in Madison. Along the way, they recall past Mitski shows they’ve attended (1:34), rave about her chair-heavy new stage show (5:51), examine discourse around identity and music consumption (11:20), and formally analyze a few music videos from Be The Cowboy in an extended segment of “A.V. Club” (28:41). Oh, they also express grief over a missed opportunity to grab a very elusive Mitski matchbook and invite you to join them both in mourning (47:11).In lieu of a guest this week, Alex and Shaun want to highlight some groovy work about Mitski others have done! To read the rest of Amileah Sutliff’s Liner Notes interview with Mistki for Vinyl Me Please, please see “The Unquenchable Desperation of ‘Be The Cowboy’”; to know more about Mitski’s performance at the Sylvee on April 3, 2019, see Mercy Xiong’s review for EMMIE Magazine; finally, to peep the adorable fan art for Mitski’s “Pink In The Night” featured on this week’s mini “Queer Revolutions” segment and more, check out Eunnieboo on Twitter.

DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: The Zach Smith is a fucking monster, that's pretty clear at this point. Mascots in full costume playing the National Anthem before a baseball game...? Um, where again do we arbitrarily draw the line on this whole "respecting the flag" business? It's getting even more confusing. Never piss off a resourceful journalist by calling them a liar, they'll crush you: The Brett McMurphy story. If your shoe collection is your the bulk of your persona then you need to stop buying shoes. Browns "Victory Fridges". Yeah, you just know this is going to end badly. Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Browns History Lesson Part 1” (begins at the 1:35:00 mark) Mike might be going insane but he's really started to believe the Browns are building a winning team right now. Further explaining fan hobos. Having fun with (UNBELIEVABLE) Minor League Baseball team promotions, Part 4: Your Akron Rubber Ducks. Turns out Carl Nassib is stupider than he first appears and Jarvis Landry is not only a fevered ego, he's also a cheap shot bully. The only problem with Hard Knocks. The MLB Network, ESPN and some clown on Twitter must have believed Trevor Bauer was getting treatment for his broken leg in Wakanda or some shit, and now they seriously owe him an apology. Fuck Trudy and the backwater state of Louisiana she crawled out from. The one Tribe concern that has Mike totally freaked out.
