New Year, Same Lads! The Lads return from holiday break to talk a bunch of nonsense into your earholes! First up, we talk about the news, as the 116th Congress officially convened for the first time in the midst of a grueling federal shutdown. Then it’s on to go back to the work of Victor Sjolstrom with his landmark silent horror-drama, The Phantom Carriage! The Lads chat about its now-alien seeming morality, it’s incredible practical effects, and Frank rants about how shitty CGI looks in contrast. Then the lads chat about Brian Eno’s ambient masterpiece Another Green World, and talk about the transformative effect it had on Eno’s career and their own lives. Last it’s on to Frasier S1E13 Guess Who’s Coming To Breakfast, where Martin fucks a neighbor, Frasier is smarmy, and Niles is once again a creep! Frank is sick! Justin screams in despair! Tom wants to learn Swedish! Good times!Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
Merry Christmas! This week we talk all Christmas junk, the new Hellboy Trailer, The Christmas Chronicles, Christmas Music, and a Frasier S1E12 Miricle On Third Or Fourth Street. Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
This week the lads battle back from existential crises large and small in order to keep bringing you the Plaid Lads content you crave! They were gonna talk politics but get sidetracked yelling at each other about STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI! Who has the right opinion? Listen and find out! (It’s Frank.) Then we get a SNEAK ATTACK Frasier recap where we discuss S1E10 Oops! Bulldog gets fired by John Glover, and there are a lot of problematic jokes. Then it’s on to Charles Laughton’s 1955 masterpiece Night of the Hunter. The Lads go through the film’s troubled history, its amazing end product, and Frank makes Justin cry! Then the Lads talk Courtney Barnett’s sophomore effort Tell Me How You Really Feel. Is it as good as her first album? No! But it’s still good. Then we close out with ANOTHER Frasier, S1E11 Death Becomes Him. This one is a lot funnier and more fun to talk about.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
Murphy Chrimbo! The Lads take you to the tragic events of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade scarred a generation. A rogue Spider-Man float and the coming of our new Minion overlord bring the dawn of a new, terrible age. Then the boys settle the score on the Christmas season once and for all: is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Is Baby, It’s Cold Outside problematic? (Yes.) And the boys sort out their feelings on the season in general. Then it’s on to the Coen Brothers 2013 masterpiece, Inside Llewyn Davis. The Lads resonate perhaps a bit TOO closely with the films’ troubled protagonist, and geek out over the movies’ many references to the folk music of the era. Then it’s on to talk about the album that’s the inspiration for the movie, Inside Dave Van Ronk by Dave Van Ronk. The boys marvel over the albums continued emotional resonance, Van Ronk’s remarkable life, and talk about what sets it apart from its contemporaries. Finally it’s Frasier S1E9 Selling Out! It’s the first appearance of Frasier’s manager Bebe Glasier! Justin forgot to watch this one though so we just kinda hash out the basics.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
Happy Thanksgiving! The Lads get prepped for Turkey Day as Justin invites you to a down county Thanksgiving meal to start the proceedings. Then the boys talk about their favorite parts of the holiday, including the struggles of being a vegetarian on vegetable-lite holiday. Justin closes things out by telling a WILD story about a call to a cable company that almost descends into phone sex. Then the boys move on to the whimsical 1937 Hiroshi Shimizu film Mr Thank You. The Lads are utterly charmed by this slice of life of interwar, Depression-era Japan, and marvel at its honesty about Japanese life. Then it’s on to talking about Music From Big Pink, the debut album by the Band. If you’re not already sold on the Band, Tom will set you straight about them, because they fucking rule. Finally, we chat about Frasier S1E8, Beloved Infidel. Did Martin cheat on his wife? Find out!Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
This week on the pod, the Lads are feeling loose and loopy, so the episode is full of a lot more silly bullshit than usual. We start by trying to talk about the ongoing results of the 2018 Midterm elections, the fact that California is still on fire, and how things are looking for the Democrats. Then it's on to Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries, an excellent movie about aging and regret, and the boys manage to see a lot of themselves in a miserable, long dead Swedish man. Then it's on to the touchiest album chat so far, as the Lads debate Neutral Milk Hotel's classic In The Aeroplane Over The Sea? Should we judge it by the artists who rip it off? Is it relatable? Did it make Justin cry? Finally, the Lads cover Frasier S1E7 Call Me Irresponsible, the funniest episode so far. There are classic gags such as Frasier having indigestion whenever he tries to fuck, and Daphne making Christmas cards before Halloween.Next up is Hiroshima Shimizu’s Mr. Thank You, The Band’s first masterpiece Music From Big Pink, and Frasier S1E8 Beloved Infidel.Check out Justin’s new album Mayday.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
This week on the pod, the Lads are recovering from the Halloween Spooktacular and the horrible secrets of Tom's basement. They chat about Frank's new job and Justin's new album. Then the boys try to navigate the dark heart of current events, and Tom makes the case for hope and resilience. Then the boys move on to Olivier Assayas gorgeous, elliptical 2014 drama Clouds of Sils Maria. The Lads dissect its arguments about art, aging, and identity. Then it's on to Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks' Mirror Traffic, and the Lads hash out their respective levels of Pavement fandom, and how the album marks a sea change in Malkmus' artistic output. Finally, the boys talk about Frasier S1E6 The Crucible, where Frasier is humiliated by a weird artist lady, and a lot of the show's more meaningful relationships start to take shape. Join us next week, when we dissect the hopefully positive results of the midterm election. Also, Frank talks about Robbie Coltrane a lot for some reason.Next up is Ingmar Bergmans Wild Strawberries, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, and Frasier S1E7, Call Me Irresponsible.Check out Justin’s new album Mayday.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
It's a Halloween SpoOoOktacular! After the Lads try to solve the mystery of what's going on in Tom's creepy basement, they reminisce about what Halloween means to them. There's lots of talk about costumes, like Justin possibly dressing up as Meatloaf, Frank dressing up as a Japanese professional wrestler, and Tom figuring out how to pee with his clothes on backward. Then we power through the mail bombing shit because it's depressing. (Note: this was recorded before they caught the perp.) Then the boys talk about the crazy silent Swedish docu-horror film Häxan. We marvel at the technical achievements, and the way Christensen threads the needle on witchcraft and the patriarchy way back in 1922. Then the boys talk about Talking Heads Fear of Music, analyzing why it occupies a unique space in the band's history. Then it's on to Frasier S1E5 Here’s Looking At You, an ill-advised episode where Martin spies on a lady with a telescope, and it still makes Justin cry for some reason. We close out with a new segment where the boys recommend things they've been enjoying.Next up is Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria, Mirror Traffic by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and Frasier S1E6, The Crucible.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
This week on the pod the boys sort through the childhood trauma that happens when you force a Plaid Lad to do outdoor activities. Then the boys talk about the Jamal Kashogghi situation (this was recorded before the Saudis debuted their bullshit excuse) and the embarrassing Elizabeth Warren race science thing. Then it’s on to having a blast with the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three. The Lads talk about 70s faces, 70s NYC, and 70s social values. Then it’s on to Feist’s excellent second album Let It Die, and the various ways the boys charted their relationship to Feist’s music with their social lives. (They all wanted girls to talk to them.) To close out, we talk Frasier S1E4 I Hate Frasier Crane, where Frasier gets challenged to a fight by Joe Mantenga. Daphne’s a psychic and Martin is disrespectful to sex workers.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
This week on the pod the Lads try to figure out what can be done as America becomes an even worse hellhole post-Kavanaugh confirmation. Then we talk Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s classic 1947 drama Black Narcissus. Do nuns turn into sex demons? Does the film’s use of brownface invalidate post-colonial readings? Tom and Frank also discuss The Gringo Protocol and everyone loves Mr. Dean’s short shorts. Next we discuss the Flaming Lips’ Clouds Taste Metallic, the last guitar driven album they did before they got all spacey. Frank hasn’t heard it before. Does he like it? Stay tuned! We close out with Frasier S1E3 Dinner at Eight, where the Crane boys get their expensive ties cut off at a shitty steak restaurant. ALSO: Frank drops knowledge on Justin and Tom about Pete Davidson’s weird sex habits.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
The Lads are back! This week we raged about the Kavanaugh shit and tried to sort out whether or not there’s any hope left in this country (spoiler: it’s not lookin’ good.) Then we marvel (and argue a bit) about Bob Fosse’s masterwork All That Jazz. We convert Justin to loving it. Then two out of three of us talk about Vince Staples’ Summertime ‘06. To close out, we talk about Frasier S1E2 Space Quest, which makes Justin cry for some reason.Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
