The Little Prince has been enchanting readers of all ages since 1943, when French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first introduced the boy from a distant planet. Inspired by his own life and a desert crash landing, this poetic tale has become one of the most translated and best-selling books in the world. In this episode, we begin a two-part look at The Little Prince on stage and screen—both versions produced by Joseph Tandet. There's the ambitious 1982 Broadway-bound musical starring Michael York and a young Anthony Rapp, which never made it past previews. And before that, the 1974 movie musical directed by Stanley Donen and featuring Lerner and Loewe's final collaboration—complete with Bob Fosse, Gene Wilder, and a surprisingly rocky production history. How does an artist once perceived to be ahead of his time fall behind the times? The choreographer/director of Golden Age classics like Singin' the Rain and Funny Face left Hollywood for all the 60s and the first half of the 70s, perfecting a certain brand of sophisticated comedy/romance abroad with films like Charade, Bedazzled and Two for the Road. His rough Hollywood re-entry was marked by exercises in nostalgia for eras gone by (Lucky Lady, a movie about Prohibition Era gangsters starring Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli; the 1930s spoof Movie Movie) and attempts to give audiences of the 80s what it was assumed they wanted (the sci-fi debacle Saturn 3, the sex comedy Blame it on Rio). Ep. 308: Karina Longworth on You Must Remember This: The Old Man Is Still Alive – Capra, Ford, Donen, Wyler, and Co. Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Karina Longworth's You Must Remember This podcast needs no introduction for her erudite, wildly popular considerations of Hollywood film history, and in her latest season of episodes, she looks at the late-career work of major directors through a variety of lenses. I was delighted to welcome Longworth to the latest episode of The Last Thing I Saw to discuss her selection of filmmakers and their often idiosyncratic later works, including Frank Capra, Stanley Donen, John Ford, Otto Preminger, and William Wyler. She also makes a pick or two of contemporary directors we might consider in their twilight today... Greatest musical of all time, you say? Plenty of people would agree. Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly co-direct Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds through a delightful Comden and Gteen score, not to mention dance numbers that have achieved legendary status. For anyone who admires clever, energetic film choreography, it’s a joy to watch. For a fan of classic film, there’s an homage to the transition between silent and talking movie. That happened barely 20 years before this film was made, which is kind of bonkers to think about. The episode title is a callback. It’s what we do! In the year that Jacques Demy's beloved Umbrellas of Cherbourg turns 60, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones reflect on their favourite aspects of the screen musical.According to some, we're currently in the midst of a movie musicals revival, with Jon M Chu's Wicked hot on the heels of Emila Perez and Joker: Folie à Deux, but will any of them match what Ellen considers to be the pinnacle of the form, the 1950s Hollywood musical? Her love of the classic MGM musicals primed Ellen to be a huge fan of the TV show Crazy Ex Girlfriend when it came along. This is the musical sitcom that took all of these essential elements of the 1950s Hollywood musical, then recombined them with a very 21st Century approach to relationships and mental health. Ellen speaks with Crazy Ex Girlfriend creator and star Rachel Bloom about Disney, writing jokes for the screen, and spontaneous singing. But it's essential to pay proper tribute to the classics, and in particular the work of American lyricist and producer Arthur Freed. Ellen sat down with writer, filmmaker and actor Manuela Lazic to talk about Freed's masterpiece, 1952's Singin' in the Rain which stars Gene Kelly, who also co-directed with Stanley Donen. And Mark meets Janis Pugh, director of Chuck Chuck Baby, a low budget, British indie charmer set in a chicken processing factory that is deeply influenced by Jacques Demy's 1964 French hit The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Janis Pugh is not alone in her love of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It follows the story of two young lovers whose future together is interrupted by the Algerian war, with the French dialogue entirely sung and set perfectly to the music of Michel Le Grand. Writer and editor of Little White Lies, David Jenkins, is a huge fan of Jacques Demy, and he speaks with Mark about the film's influences and legacy.Produced by Freya Hellier. November has arrived and we've booked for a genre of film that is very different than the cavalcade of horror we just got out of. For some, maybe it is horror, but all month long we're going to discuss decades worth of Musical Films and we've calling it RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS. Many of these films started on the stage and others started as movies inspired by the stage and we kick it all off with a well regarded classic. Go watch this one with a grandparent, I'm sure they would appreciate the time spent with Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds in Stanley Donen & Kelly's beloved 1952 musical “SINGIN' IN THE RAIN”. The silent era is fading and Hollywood talkies are looking for the full package, of which Lina Lamont is not it. Shallow and shrill she is, but she's still got some Hollywood pull. Don and Cosmo have the talent that Lina doesn't and they meet Kathy Selden, who could cover for Lina's shrill voice in a new musical feature just so long as Lina doesn't know. Of course Don and Kathy are in love and then there's all the singing and dancing that you might have heard over the years even if you never formally sat down with this one. Donald O'Connor truly steals the show here. The talent level is something to be admired so check this out (last we checked it's on MAX) and hear us talk of this beloved musical. First up is Blame It on Rio (1984). Then we move on to LOL (2012). Finally we review The Woman in Red (1984).Blame It on Rio is a 1984 American romantic comedy film directed by Stanley Donen and written by Charlie Peters and Larry Gelbart based on the 1977 French film Un moment d'égarement, starring an ensemble cast, including Michael Caine, Joseph Bologna, Michelle Johnson, Valerie Harper, Demi Moore, and José Lewgoy.LOL is a 2012 American teen romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Lisa Azuelos. A remake of the 2008 French film of its title (also directed by Azuelos), the film stars Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, and Adam Sevani. The film received a limited release in the United States on May 4, 2012, by Lionsgate, which handicapped it after being reeled back from a broader release, and had an overall negative critical reception. Thus, the film missed its budget by box office gross by only $500,000.The Woman in Red is a 1984 American romantic comedy film directed by and starring Gene Wilder. Wilder also wrote the script, adapting it from the Yves Robert film Pardon Mon Affaire (Sorry My Affair) (Un éléphant ça trompe énormément (An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive)). It co-stars Charles Grodin, Gilda Radner, Joseph Bologna, Judith Ivey, and Kelly LeBrock. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "I Just Called to Say I Love You", written and performed by Stevie Wonder. The film follows a married man who becomes infatuated with another woman and his amusingly unsuccessful attempts to first meet and then become intimate with her.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Send us a textThis week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to back to the late 1950's early 1960's when men smoked heavily, recklessly enjoyed sophisticated cocktails and liked their women the way they wore their suits: skinny and tight! A time when spies and cold wars were the talk of the town, and all the cool cats admired two preeminent and influential thrillers. We're talking 1959's North by Northwest directed by the Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock and starring Carey Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis, Ned Glass, and Marin Landau against 1963's Charade, directed by Stanley Donen and starring Carey Grant again, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, Ned Glass again, and the mighty George Kennedy.  I'm your host Gino Caputi and joining me this week are two of suave, millionaire Men's Men in their own right, David Johnson DMD and Author/Producer George Young.  Before we break out the martinis: the synopses: North by Northwest follows the exploits of slightly mild-mannered ad agency owner Roger Thornhill who is mistaken for a government agent and abducted.  After that, he is thrown into a world of shadow-y art dealers and fast-talking female special agents who will do anything to protect and advance their positions. Roger's only way out is to follow the trail of mystery to its presidential conclusion.  In Charade, Regina Lambert, a soon to be divorcee quickly finds out she's a widow whose ex-husband has hidden a fortune, by 1963 standards.  With both the government and four of her husband's former associates following her to find the money, she falls s hopelessly in love with one of them, though his identity is never quite known. Which is the coolest caper? Find out!!  Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Watch, like and subscribe on Youtube Listen to the audio podcast on buzzsprout:

En el episodio de hoy hablamos sobre esos lugares felices que merecen ser compartidos con aquellas personas que, con una misma sensibilidad, sabes que los van a apreciar. Que hablándolos contigo van a hacer que tus pequeñas, o grandes, debilidades por algo sean aún mejores precisamente por el hecho de haber compartido una mesa, un café, una tarta sacher o, en este caso, una Trinchera, con ellos. He also shares a beautiful tribute to the late, great Chita Rivera, who worked with Rick's husband Roger Rees on their mutual last project, The Visit. You won't want to miss this episode!

And don't you forget it.”– Glenn Gordon CaronIn the second of our two-part conversation with Moonlighting and Medium creator Glenn Gordon Caron, we cover everything from Al Jarreau's iconic theme song to sparring with Cybill Shepherd, to a forty-year career spent working with “audacious people”…Moonlighting, which ran from 1985-1989 starred Cybill Shepherd, a then-unknown Bruce Willis, Allyce Beasley and Curtis Armstrong, and become a landmark classic of 1980s television. This week I'm joined by Glenn Gordon Caron, the creator and showrunner of Moonlighting, to talk about that series's long-awaited arrival on streaming. We discussed the show's creation, the discovery of Bruce Willis, how he and costar Cybil Shepherd kept up with the show's trademark rapid-fire patter, the difficulty in clearing music rights (and how Moonlighting was one of the first shows to heavily incorporate pop music into the show), working with legends like Orson Welles and Stanley Donen, and so much more.  If you've never watched the show, I highly recommend checking it out on Hulu; the folks at Disney have done an amazing job restoring the episodes. A handful of highlights, if you're trying to figure out where to start: Season 1, Episode 1: The Pilot. Tonally this is a bit different from what would follow, but it's genuinely kind of wild to see Willis show up onscreen fully formed as Bruce Willis, Star in what was almost literally his first role. Season 1, Episode 2: Gunfight at the So-So Corral. Again, the show is still finding its footing, but it's a pretty good representation of the combination of smart dialogue, great casting, and clever resolutions to the onscreen mysteries. Season 2, Episode 4: The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice. Orson Welles introduced this episode—which is structured with a mysterious intro and then two dream sequences (one dreamt by Shepherd's Maddie Hayes as a sort of MGM musical; the other by Willis's David Addison as a sort of 1940s noir)—in part because the network was terrified no one would want to watch a black-and-white episode of TV. Season 2, Episode 18: Camille. Whoopi Goldberg and Judd Nelson co-starred, and their mystery is all well and good, but it's the closing sequence in which the (fourth) walls of reality come crashing in on the cast that makes this second season finale a must-watch. Season 3, Episode 6: Big Man on Mulberry Street. The mid-show dance sequence was done by Stanley Donen, and, again, I just can't imagine what it was like to have this sequence pop up in the middle of network TV in the 1980s. Wild stuff. Season 3, Episode 10: Poltergeist III — Dipesto Nothing. One of the show's episodes focusing on the adventures of Ms. Dipesto (Allyce Beasley) and Mr. Viola (Curtis Armstrong), who make for a delightful pairing. Season 4, Episode 2: Come Back Little Shiksa. Shepherd had to leave the show for a while due to her pregnancy, which led to a series of episodes that separated her and Willis. But the creators used some clever ways to get them in the same room. Plus: John Goodman's in this one!

In this episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith talks to Director Paul Sng and Producer Jen Corcoron about their new feature documentary Tish, which tells the story of working-class photographer Patricia ‘Tish' Murtha who worked to document life in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s. Anna then talks to Production Designer Sarah Greenwood and Set Decorator Katie Spencer, who worked together to create the distinctive world of Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Tish was the Opening Night Film of Sheffield Doc Fest 2023 and it is a celebration of a life devoted to exposing social inequality through art. The feature documentary is told from the perspective of Ella Murtha, both as daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive. She retraces her mother's relationship with the photographic medium, from finding her first camera in a local skip, to earning a reputation as the ‘demon snapper' and beyond. Anna talks to Paul and Jen about the inspiration behind the project, the power of having working-class stories told from the inside, and asks about their favourite photographs in the Tish archive. Next on Girls On Film, Anna has a lively conversation with Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, whose long time collaboration has resulted in multiple Academy Award and BAFTA nominations, and, most recently, the weird, wonderful and instantly recognisable world of Barbie. Sarah and Katie talk about working with Greta Gerwig in the early design stages of the project, following visual prompts like ‘think Gaudí in a blender' when creating Weird Barbie's house, and the film's many and varied visual inspirations. Tish by Paul Sng is being released by Modern Films in UK and Irish cinemas on 17 November 2023. On demand information: Virtual cinema 22 Dec, TVOD 5 Feb (iTunes, Amazon, Google Play).
