Honey has been part of human history for longer than recorded agriculture. This episode explores how bees transform nectar into honey, how hives function, the origins of beekeeping, and why humans became fascinated with harvesting sweetness from insects that absolutely did not volunteer for the arrangement. Along the way, you'll hear about honey varieties, seasonal hive cycles, and the surprisingly competitive world of modern beekeeping. It's steady and consistent, with no whispering and no sudden changes, just enough to give your mind something to follow as you wind down. Happy sleeping! s the food industry intentionally misleading the public about sweeteners, health, and what people are really putting into their bodies every day? In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Habib Skaff and Jennifer Allen join Michael Jaco to break down the growing concerns surrounding artificial sweeteners, hidden food industry practices, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and how many products marketed as “healthy” may actually be accelerating aging and damaging long-term wellness. The conversation focuses on how modern food manufacturing and processed ingredients have transformed the way people eat while simultaneously contributing to rising levels of chronic illness, fatigue, inflammation, skin deterioration, blood sugar imbalance, and metabolic stress. Dr. Skaff explains why many consumers have been conditioned to trust labels, marketing campaigns, and nutritional narratives that often fail to tell the full story about what certain sweeteners and additives may actually be doing to the body at the cellular level. The discussion dives deeply into the science behind healthier alternatives and why ingredients such as Allulose are attracting growing attention for their potential role in supporting metabolic balance and healthier aging without some of the concerns associated with conventional sweeteners. Jennifer Allen also shares how Skin Wisdom approaches wellness and skincare differently by focusing not just on appearance, but on the deeper relationship between inflammation, nutrition, cellular health, and the visible condition of the skin itself. According to Dr. Skaff, skin health is often one of the clearest reflections of what is happening internally within the body. When inflammation, oxidative stress, poor nutrition, and metabolic dysfunction are present for long periods of time, the skin frequently becomes one of the first places where those effects begin to show. Throughout the conversation, the focus remains on helping people become more informed consumers, better understand how the body responds to different ingredients, and avoid being manipulated by industries driven more by profit than long-term health outcomes. This episode explores the intersection of food science, anti-aging research, cellular wellness, metabolic health, and modern skincare while encouraging listeners to question mainstream nutritional narratives and become more intentional about what they consume daily. At its core, this discussion is about reclaiming personal health, understanding how modern systems influence the body, and learning how better choices can improve not only appearance — but energy, vitality, and long-term well-being.
Sugar is one of the most misunderstood topics in nutrition. You've heard that it's toxic, addictive, and the root of metabolic disease. You've also heard that natural options like agave or honey are better choices. But most of these claims are based on incomplete science and oversimplified thinking. In this episode, we break down what actually happens in your body when you consume sugar. We walk through how glucose and fructose are processed, why the liver is involved, and what role dose, context, and total intake play in determining whether sugar becomes a problem. You'll also learn why focusing only on blood sugar misses a large part of the metabolic picture, and how to evaluate sweeteners using a more complete framework. Hosted by Leanne Vogel. Erythritol, a popular sweetener found in countless sugar-free and keto products, has long been considered a safe alternative to sugar. This episode of Revolution Health Radio examines emerging research that challenges that assumption. Chris explains how erythritol promotes blood clotting, impairs blood vessel function, increases oxidative stress, and interferes with the body's ability to dissolve clots. You'll learn why erythritol accumulates in the bloodstream, how regulatory loopholes allowed it to be widely adopted without long-term safety data, and why people with diabetes, obesity, and heart disease may be especially vulnerable. Chris also discusses similar concerns with xylitol, explores gut health side effects of sugar alcohols, and outlines safer alternatives like allulose, pure stevia extract, and monk fruit. The post RHR: Erythritol: The ‘Safe' Sweetener That's Anything But appeared first on Chris Kresser.

Are honey, maple syrup, or agave really healthier than sugar? What about stevia, monk fruit, or artificial sweeteners? In this episode of Healthy Looks Great on You, Dr. Vickie breaks down the confusing world of sweeteners so you can understand what actually matters for your health. Americans consume an average of 17–22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, far exceeding the American Heart Association's recommendation of 6 teaspoons per day for women and 9 for men. But with so many sweeteners on the market, it can be hard to know which ones are better choices and which ones are best avoided. In this episode you'll learn: • What counts as added sugar • Why sugar that occurs naturally in whole foods like fruit is different • The truth about honey, maple syrup, molasses, and agave • Whether artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin are safe • Natural zero-calorie options like stevia and monk fruit • How fiber and whole foods help slow blood sugar spikes and reduce cravings You'll also hear Dr. Vickie's simple “sweetener ladder” to help you understand which sweeteners are better choices and which ones should be limited. The biggest takeaway? The healthiest strategy isn't finding the perfect sweetener—it's training your taste buds to need less sweetness overall. If you're trying to reduce sugar cravings, stabilize blood sugar, or simply make better choices at the grocery store, this episode will give you practical guidance you can start using today. Sweeteners are everywhere, but not all of them affect the body the same way. In this episode, Dr. Holly Carling and Alicia break down how refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, and even some so-called natural sweeteners quietly disrupt blood sugar, immunity, digestion, mood, and metabolism. Dr. Carling explains why sugar behaves like a physiological toxin in the body, how artificial sweeteners confuse insulin and gut bacteria, and why marketing terms like "low glycemic" do not always tell the full story. You will also learn which sweeteners can be used more safely in moderation, why taste buds can be retrained, and how acupuncture helps reduce sugar cravings by stabilizing blood sugar, calming stress, and supporting digestion. This episode offers clarity, balance, and practical guidance without fear-based food rules. In this episode: Why refined sugar acts as a physiological disruptor How sugar spikes insulin, cortisol, inflammation, and cravings The impact of sugar on immune function and illness risk Why artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose backfire How artificial sweeteners alter gut bacteria and metabolic stability The truth about agave and highly refined stevia Which natural sweeteners are better choices in moderation Why nutrients matter when choosing sweeteners How taste buds adapt when refined sugar is removed How acupuncture helps regulate cravings, stress, digestion, and energy For full show notes, resources and links head to: https://vitalhealthcda.com/podcasts/ The Vital Health for You Podcast is for everyone. Sorbitol, a common sugar alcohol in sugar-free and "diet" products, drives liver fat buildup even when your gut bacteria are healthy, making it a hidden contributor to fatty liver disease When your microbiome is weakened from antibiotics, stress, or ultraprocessed foods, sorbitol slips through your gut unchanged and reaches your liver, where it triggers rapid fat production Sorbitol is converted into fructose inside your liver, bypassing normal metabolic controls and overwhelming your ability to process sugar safely Strengthening your gut bacteria, eliminating vegetable oils and alcohol, and increasing choline-rich foods help protect your liver from sorbitol-driven damage Simple daily steps — removing sorbitol-containing products, restoring gut balance, supporting vitamin D metabolism, and using whole-food carbs — give you direct control over your liver health

Sugars and Oxidative Stress More kids than ever are presenting with psychological problems. (2:00) Vinnie mentions Robyn Dobbins, who openly shares how diet has improved her mental health symptoms. People are feeding their brains improperly. (4:30) There have been decades of misinformation, so treatment has been off. Everyone deserves the correct information upfront rather than having to go through multiple medications. (7:00) Georgia goes through her personal history and how she stumbled onto dietary health changes. Sweeteners have many side effects. (16:00) Sugar is the only addictive substance that society sanctions for children. (20:00) It is not only addictive, but it is also physically damaging to the brain because it creates oxidative stress in the brain. (24:00) Refined flours do the same by causing a glycogen load; as a result, your insulin is raised longer. (25:00) Most people are metabolically broken, so sugars and carbs are even more harmful. If your body "needs" sugar, your body will make it. Fats and proteins are essential, but carbs are not. (31:00) The FDA recommends a bunch of nonsense. And now our gut health is a topic that needs to be paid attention to. Better Mental Health Vinnie knows people whose adult kids are still having issues, but refuse to believe that diet can help. (38:00) Georgia always uses dietary interventions first, and she has found them to be the most effective for her clients (41:00) There are certain foods the brain needs. It's not just junk food that hurts, but also foods we've been told are healthy that aren't (like whole grains). Dr. Ede's book Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind addresses dietary therapy as a first step. (45:00) They discuss many different things that have been happening in the news, which are examples of declining mental health. Here in the south, for many, the beverage of choice is sweet tea. But if you're an unsweetened iced tea drinker like me, you're faced with a myriad of options to sweeten your beverage. You can use sugar or products like Sweet'N Low, Equal, Splenda, or Truvia. It's a newer choice made from the stevia plant. But one of those sweeteners may do something more than replace sugar. It can help those suffering from hair loss grow hair. Researchers have found that combining stevia with minoxidil, the hair-loss agent in Rogaine, can improve the hair growth process. This week on The Wellness Scoop we're answering your questions, starting with one of the most common debates: is it better to add sugar or a sweetener to your tea? We'll look at what the latest science and WHO guidance actually says, and the best way to approach it long term. We then dive into fibre, the difference between soluble and insoluble, how they work together in the gut, and whether you really need to worry about getting the perfect balance between the two. Next up, calcium. If you eat little or no dairy, how can you still meet your needs? We'll cover the top plant-based sources, from sesame seeds and hummus to calcium-set tofu and fortified milks, plus why vitamin D is just as important for absorption. We also unpack the growing trend for adaptogens like ashwagandha, maca and lion's mane, asking how much evidence there really is behind the hype and whether they're worth the spend. And finally, how to keep your healthy eating habits going as the seasons change. We'll explore habit stacking, the behavioural science behind linking new habits to ones you already do, and share practical ways to boost the nutrition of your favourite autumn comfort foods so you can carry your summer momentum through the darker months. About the Guest(s): Dr. Kristin Hieshetter is a renowned expert in nutrition, health, and wellness, known for her insights into the impact of dietary choices on overall health. With a focus on the effects of non-nutritive sweeteners, gut health, and oxidative stress on the body, Dr. Hieshetter is a leading voice in helping individuals understand how modern dietary elements affect their well-being. She is a frequent speaker and educator in the field, dedicated to making scientific research accessible to the public. Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the intricate world of non-nutritive sweeteners, focusing on erythritol and its alarming implications for brain health and cardiovascular risk. Drawing from a forthcoming 2025 study, she discusses the adverse effects of erythritol on brain microvascular endothelial function, highlighting increased risks for cerebrovascular events and cardiovascular mortality. Extend the conversation to include a large cohort study involving Finnish smokers, Dr. Hieshetter emphasizes the dire consequences associated with erythritol consumption, urging a reevaluation of these sweeteners' legality given their potential health risks. Dr. Hieshetter further explores the complexities of sweeteners like stevia and their unknown long-term impacts. She references various studies, including Project SWEET and insights from European research on artificial sweeteners, revealing how these substances may inadvertently contribute to chronic health issues like elevated triglycerides and impaired kidney function. Shifting attention to gut health, Dr. Hieshetter emphasizes dietary integrity and the pivotal role of a healthy gut microbiome in preventing inflammation and chronic disease. Concluding with practical dietary advice and upcoming topics on gut health, Dr. Hieshetter leaves listeners equipped with crucial knowledge and a call for proactive health vigilance. Key Takeaways: Erythritol, a common non-nutritive sweetener, has been linked to increased risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in a recent study. The Finnish cohort study uncovers grave mortality risks tied to erythritol, with significant implications for cancer and heart disease. Despite its popularity, the long-term safety of stevia remains largely unvalidated, with some evidence suggesting potential health risks. Gut health plays a critical role in overall wellness, and maintaining a balanced microbiome is crucial in preventing kidney and other systemic health issues. Dr. Hieshetter advocates for choosing natural foods over artificial additives to reduce health hazards related to modern dietary patterns. Notable Quotes: "Erythritol is actually changing the microvascular function of the blood vessels that bring nutrients to the brain." "The higher the erythritol, the higher the risk of death and cancer in these folks." "Ingesting all these artificial sweeteners either raised your triglycerides and your liver enzymes or raised your LDL cholesterol." "It's really critical to understand that when you see these groups… they can be manufactured without the things that are harmful to our brains." "Gut permeability is pivotal in the etiology of all immune disorders and in eliciting chronic inflammation."
