HEAVY Music Interviews
Divine Intervention With KAT MOSS From SCOWL

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2025 18:38

Interview by Kris PetersMusic is a funny beast, especially when it comes to genre classification. It can make you listen to bands expecting a particular sound but getting something vastly different, or it could also put people off listening to bands based on personal taste.Take Santa Cruz outfit Scowl, who are readily labelled as a hardcore band, but in reality offer so much more. Sure, Scowl have hardcore elements in abundance but their music also traverses the realms of - but is not limited to - rock, hard rock, alternative rock and punk as evidenced in their upcoming album Are We All Angels, which is out via Dead Oceans on April 4.Are We All Angels finds the venomous and antagonistic band funnelling their aggression through a more expansive version of themselves. It is an album marked by alienation, grief, and the loss of control. Much of it grapples with their newfound place in the hardcore scene, a community that has both embraced the band and made them something of a lightning rod over the past few years. The band — Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), Mikey Bifolco (guitar), and Kat Moss (vocals) — formed in 2019 and broke out in 2021 with their debut album How Flowers Grow, and have been on a non-stop rise ever since. With 2023's Psychic Dance Routine, Scowl pushed the boundaries of punk, blending aggressive hardcore with lush alternative melodies. But now Are We All Angels pushes those boundaries even more. Vocalist Kat Moss joined HEAVY to tell us more."It's not a hardcore record from a band that is a hardcore band," Moss began when asked to describe the sound on Are We All Angels. "We're a band that has hardcore, or perhaps hardcore people, in the band. And that kind of creates this really beautiful thing where we're just kind of feeling it out as we go in the dark. And that is the reality of songwriting as a whole. It doesn't really matter if it's hardcore or indie music whatever. But it was very freeing."We ask Moss about the title and if the fact there is no question mark at the end means it is more of a statement than a question."It's up to interpretation," she smiled cheekily. "It's something we talked about, and we were intending. It was a complicated conversation because to some degree it was like, let's figure this out. Let's make a decision on a question mark or period or whatever or put the punctuation in, make it something. And we kind of were like, no, we're not going to make it obvious. You get to figure it out for yourself. There isn't really any right or wrong answer there, because it's supposed to be introspective, you know?In the full interview, Kat discussed the creative evolution of Are We All Angels, highlighting a shift from hardcore influences to a broader sound achieved through collaborative songwriting among all band members. HEAVY raised questions about the album's title and its representation in the singles, while Kat emphasized the importance of exploring new ideas to create a distinct and introspective musical experience. Additionally, Kat reflected on Scowl's debut album with new label Bad Ocean, expressing excitement about being part of an indie alternative label while preserving their raw sound. She shared insights into the band's origins as a local hardcore group formed in 2019, underscoring the joy of performing in various venues and her commitment to musical growth, avoiding repetition of past works and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Erschienen am 21. März 2025 auf Dead Oceans. Unser Review. Zak meets up with one of his favorite songwriters, Cassandra Jenkins, before her show in Amsterdam. They talk about her pre-show ritual, inspired by her friend, Erika Spring. It's something we can all try next time we're in need of some knowing companionship. It's called...The Cosmic Guest List."Like the night sky itself, My Light, My Destroyer is always expanding. Cassandra Jenkins' third full-length, out July 12 via Dead Oceans, cracks open the promise of reaching the edge of the new with a wider sonic palette than ever before– encompassing guitar-driven indie rock, new age, sophistipop, and jazz. At the center of it all is Jenkins' curiosity towards the quarks and quasars that make up her universe, as she blends field recordings with poetic lyricism that is at turns allusive, humorous, devastating and confessional– an alchemical gesture that further deepens the richness of My Light, My Destroyer's 13 songs." -cassandrajenkins.com/ Help Zak continue making this show by becoming a Best Advice Show Patron @ https://www.patreon.com/bestadviceshow---Call Zak on the advice show hotline @ 844-935-BEST---Share this episode on IG @BestAdviceShow

We've reached the end of the road for this season—season 9 concludes with this episode, a conversation with Matthew Houck, the leader of the avant-country band Phosphorescent. In April, Phosphorescent released Revelator, the band's ninth album. It's their debut for Verve Records, after a string of well-received albums on Dead Oceans. Joined by collaborators like Jim White of the Dirty Three—who you heard earlier this season—Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, and his wife and songwriting partner Jo Schornikow, it finds Houck examining—what else?—the end of the world.  If one theme has run through the last few seasons of this show, it's that of “apocalypse," or revelation. The veil, no matter how hard we try and keep it pinned down, keeps slipping away. Revelator finds Houck facing uncertain future, but also, leveling up. In its mournful ballads and genuinely hilarious odes to bathroom graffiti, you hear the voice of a songwriter probing the void: “And we've ridden beyond where we could safely touch down And we're out in the void, past where we could've had turned around I tried my feet on the floor, tried to beat on the door But it didn't even make a sound Got my heart open wide But the city been shut down”  But Revelator is no dour screed; it is in fact filled with hope and good humor. In this episode, he joins us to extoll the glory of “unnecessary” art, his work on Paul Schrader's new film Oh, Canada; and the multiple apocalypses afoot. Josh King is a sibling, a husband, a father, and an insanely intelligent human being. He mans the six-string, the vocals, and the mixing for the band, Low Forest, and he's my guest for Episode No. 132.Josh and I talked growing up and education, Missouri-style. We touched on Low Forest's fascinating collection of releases on Bandcamp, where to follow them (Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, and we had a peek at a few of Josh's favorite albums, which were these:Hum's You'd Prefer an Astronaut (1995)Fantastic Planet (1996), FailurePortishead's Roseland NYC Live (1998)Small Explosions That Are Yours to Keep (2005), Mitchell AkiyamaElder's Reflections of a Floating World (2017)The fact that Josh has a super-sharp mind, a warm-and-open heart, and might very well be a vessel for delivering space rock to Kansas City may or may not be related to the fact that he is a pretty soft-spoken fellow. One would think that I'd be able to recognize that early enough in the conversation to adjust the levels at this point, but...it's not easy being the 2024 version of Al Franken's Mobile One-Man Uplink Unit. So, apologies if he's tough to hear at times. It was a true pleasure meeting Josh, and knowing that his presence is out there adds to my occasionally stout belief that there's good in the world moving things in the right direction. Thanks for tuning in.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are cuts from a tune called, "Witchoo," by Durand Jones & The Indications. I lifted it from their 2021 release, Private Space, which exists for us c/o Dead Oceans.

It's the Ryan O'Reilly episode, y'all...#90!Okay. Silliness? Check. Now let's get the gaffe outta the way. In a nutshell, I was so excited to have this week's guest in the chair that I literally forgot to hit "record" on her camera. So...no video, which is a shame as Meg Kumin's face is far too adorable to waste on the incompetencies of a cotton-headed ninnymuggins such as myself.I did, however, take the liberty of plastering the video file with some of my favorite pieces of her photography, which you can view/purchase at megkumin.com, so there is that aspect, which makes this episode even uniquer than it already was.And speaking of Meg, she's a daughter and a sister and a wife and a mom. She's also part of the communications team for the University of Kansas, and a staff photographer as well. She teaches and is enrolled in the PhD program, she's a for-hire photographer for maybe six or seven more years. She's traveled to some pretty rad places, done some pretty cool things, and -- in addition to numerous other admirable qualities -- she's a terrific storyteller. So, Meg and I talked a little bit about her background and some of her adventures. We touched on a couple of hardships she's been through, and how she has managed to continuously mold herself into an amazing person while facing adversity. And, of course, we talked about a few of her favorite records along the way. Those were these:Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)Doolittle (1989), PixiesDe La Soul's Stakes Is High (1996)The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), Lauryn HillCatching up with Meg tickled my fancy, as did having her on the show, so I'm gracious and grateful for both the time and the opportunity. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to either the promo or the intro/outro audio samples. It's Episode #85! It's Marc Boerigter! It's Don Denkinger! It's...it's...Shwaggy Roaches!Yes, yes, my friends. Stoney-Doom! was in the house talking band life, Kansas cannabis law reform, and some of that sweet, sweet music. Please give them a follow on the ol' Instagram machine and check out their bandcamp as well, where I'm sure you'll be able to find some sweet snacks for the members of your gang. This was a really fun one to do, and I'm grateful for the time commitment Shwaggy and Bluedream the Great (who kicked it on the couch and didn't get captured on camera) made in order to make it possible. Note: I'm told Doobie Stoopid was otherwise occupied and couldn't make the trek.Anyway, we talked about family and upbringing and concerts and, well...that stoner life. And we of course talked about a few of Shwaggy's favorite records over the years. And those were these:Dirt (1992), Alice in ChainsDeftones's White Pony (2000)Lateralus (2001), ToolMastodon's Crack the Skye (2009)Man on the Moon (2009), Kid CudiSo, go check out Stoney-Doom! And while you're at it, check out the City and Colour cover of "Rain When I Die" by Alice in Chains that we talked about in our conversation. It's breathtaking. You can find it on YouTube as part of the MoPOP Founders Award 2020. Killer stuff.Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to any of the audio samples contained in this episode. As broadcast April 16, 2023 with plenty of hero worship to start.  Tonight we open with the immortal Paul McCartney calling it quits publicly on this date in 1970, but we mainly focus on the more recent with the legendary octogenarian seemingly more relevant than ever.  After that it's onto celebrating the new music just out, with highlights in hour 1 from Yaeji, Little Dragon, Billie Marten, and Emily King to taste test while they dance in the stratosphere.  Part 3 sees us covering all the big tunes just out as we are Poppin Off, starting in Korea with a total sell-out tune from NewJeans and a tune from BTS's Agust D featuring IU, then we had fresh joints from Pink Sweat$ and Greta Van Fleet as well to keep the flavors varied.  Part 4 our Fresh K Cuts saw joints from Chang Kiha, deulraejang, and TAEWOO being the highlights, and that's where we shut the front door.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Paul McCartney – Find My Way Back (Beck remix)SBTRKT feat Toro y Moi – DAYS GO BYYaeji – Passed Me ByLittle Dragon – Slugs of LoveWednesday – QuarryBlondshell – Salad Part II (34:09)Billie Marten – God AboveSuperviolet – Big Songbirds Don't CryDaughter – To RageJana Horn – Days Go ByEmily King – False StartMr. Big – To Be With YouPart III (61:19)NewJeans – ZeroAgust D feat IU – People, Pt. 2Jonas Brothers – Waffle HouseJP Saxe – I Don't Miss YouPink Sweat$ - MomentsRicky Montgomery – EraserGreta Van Fleet – Meeting The Master Part IV (91:21)TAEWOO – Coffeenynas – SUGARdeulrejang – People ALEPH – T Risso – DaydreamerChang Kiha – DoKid Wine – I Cried

It's Episode #49, party people!I can't properly express how excited I was to sit down and talk life and tunes with MABkc.Hoo boy! I am so excited for him and all that he lovingly has on his plate: wife and child(ren), new location(s) for Industry Soundz, paused recording projects calling him back, and perhaps a podcast in the near future. It's all real fantastic stuff, and I hope that each of those things continue to bring him joy and prosperity.Anyway, MAB picked six records, two a piece by three different artists. And they are these:Me Against the World (1995) and All Eyez on Me (1996) by 2PacJay-Z's The Dynasty (2000) and The Black Album (2003)From Me to U (2003) and What the Game's Been Missing (2005) by Juelz SantanaAfter some nine years since our first meeting (and like my guest mentioned), it was amazing that we were able to reconnect and make this conversation happen. Please consider giving it a view or a listen, and don't forget to check out the Merch' line on your way out. Thank you for winding up here.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are samples from a tune by Phosphorescent called, "My Beautiful Boy" and the track is from his 2018 album, C'est La Vie (c/o Dead Oceans).

On today's episode, I talk to musician Carey Mercer. Originally from Okanagan, British Columbia, Carey formed the band Frog Eyes in the early 2000s out of the ashes of his former band Blue Pine. From 2003 until 2018, they wrote and released almost a dozen albums and EPs on labels like Absolutely Kosher and Dead Oceans. And in that time, Carey also released a number of solo albums, as well as with the supergroup Swan Lake featuring Destroyer's Dan Bejar and Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug. In 2018, Frog Eyes disbanded, but four years later they are back with a new album The Bees, which is out on Paper Bag Records, and as usual, it's fantastic! Mitski - "The Only Heartbreaker" from the 2022 album Laurel Hell on Dead Oceans. Mitski's latest album, Laurel Hell, went through a few different phases during its creation. "This album has been a punk record at some point, and a country record," she told Rolling Stone. "Then, after a while, it was like, 'I need to dance.' Even though the lyrics might be depressing, I need something peppy to get me through this." Today's Song of the Day definitely fits the bill. "I needed that Breakfast Club dance-sequence music." Today's Song of the Day also marks the first time Mitski has teamed up with another songwriter: Dan Wilson, formerly of the band Semisonic. "I was just sitting on it forever. I have so many iterations of it. Nothing felt right," she told Apple Music. Wilson was able to give her the guidance she needed. "It turned out he's really good. He helped me solve so many of the problems and kind of lead me out of the labyrinth of it. And yeah, I'm really glad that I took that chance with him."
