2001 veröffentlichten die Gorillaz als erste virtuelle Band ihr gleichnamiges Debütalbum. Die Masterminds hinter dem Projekt sind Blur-Sänger Damon Albarn und Comiczeichner Jamie Hewlett. Mit den Gorillaz haben Damon Albarn und Jamie Hewlett eines der innovativsten Musikprojekte aller Zeiten erschaffen – aus Frust. Entstanden ist die Idee zu dem Projekt, als die beiden WG-Kollegen Ende der 90er zusammen MTV geschaut haben und sich über die glattgebügelte Scheinwelt aus produziertem Hochglanz-Pop ärgerten. "Nichts ist da mehr echt! Und jede Fakeband könnte authentischer sein als das, was wir da sehen", so die frei übersetzte Hypothese der beiden. Also haben sie genau das gemacht. Sie haben mit den Gorillaz die erste echte Fakeband der Welt erfunden. Das musikalische Mastermind ist Damon Albarn, der mit seiner Band "Blur" bereits diverse Erfolge gefeiert hatte und eine der Ikonen des Britpop war. An seiner Seite steht sein Mitbewohner und Freund Jamie Hewlett, der sich als Comiczeichner und Co-Autor des Erfolgscomics "Tank Girl" als Künstler einen Namen gemacht hatte. Das Ziel war klar: Die Gorillaz sind ein Statement gegen die Popkultur-Scheinwelt. Die Gorillaz kritisieren das Popbusiness, während sie gleichzeitig damit spielen und erobern diese gleichzeitig – was für eine Ironie. Die (offizielle) Band Gorillaz besteht aus den vier fiktiven Charakteren Murdoch Nicalls, 2-D, Noodle und Russell – allesamt mit weitreichenden Hintergrundgeschichten, die spannend, verrückt und natürlich frei erfunden sind. Die These des Projekts: Auch wenn etwas komplett frei erfunden ist, kann es authentischer sein als existierende Bands und Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut. Denn hier wird niemandem etwas vorgemacht. Mit den Gorillaz haben Damon Albarn und Jamie Hewlett nicht nur eine Band aus dem Nichts erschaffen, sondern gleich ein ganzes Universum drumherum. Die Fiktion hört nicht bei der Musik und bei den Videos auf. Es gibt mit "Rise Of The Ogre" eine Bandbiografie, Interviews mit den Bandmitgliedern und vieles mehr. Elton John hat Damon Albarn, den musikalischen Kopf hinter der Band, als "interessantesten britischen Musiker" bezeichnet. Spannend ist dabei vor allem, dass es im Gorillaz-Kosmos – im Rahmen des Debütalbums und darüber hinaus – unglaublich viel zu erkunden gibt für die Fans. Es gibt viele Details und Muster, die immer wiederkehren und weitergetragen werden – diese zu entdecken macht unglaublich viel Spaß. Besonders häufig finden sich auf dem Debütalbum zum Beispiel auch Filmreferenzen zu Klassikern der Kinogeschichte. Sei es zu den Italowestern, im Song "Clint Eastwood", dem bekanntesten Stück des Albums, oder zu Horrorfilmklassikern wie "The Shining" oder "Freitag der 13.". Mit dem Debütalbum der Gorillaz haben Jamie Hewlett und Damon Albarn der damaligen Popwelt den Spiegel vorgehalten und gezeigt, dass man für Authentizität nichtmal echte Menschen braucht. Dabei geht die 1994 geborene und in der Kleinstadt Geldern unweit der niederländischen Grenze aufgewachsene Künstlerin sozusagen mit leuchtendem Beispiel voran, und taucht mit den fünf Songs tief ein in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und mögliche Zukunft der Familie, deren Teil sie ist. Weder spart sie dabei generationsübergreifende Traumata und weitergereichte Emotionen oder unausgesprochenen Kummer aus, noch entgehen ihrer Aufmerksamkeit andererseits so stille wie mutige Akte der Resilienz. War schon ihr 2022er Album "My Body Is The Only Place" als politisch-feministisches Manifest gemeint, ist dieser Geist auch in dessen Nachfolger zu spüren und geht die in Düsseldorf lebende Hummen noch einen Schritt weiter – auf "leisen Sohlen" sozusagen, aber dafür umso nachwirkender: den einer "bewussten Entscheidung für Verletzlichkeit, langsames Wachstum und künstlerische Unabhängigkeit." Mit einem entsprechend feinfühlig inszenierten, seelenvollen Sound zwischen Folk und Art-Pop, der bei aller Detailverliebtheit auch viel Raum für Pausen, Stille und das Innehalten lässt, sind die Lieder das "Ergebnis eines inneren Prozesses, eines bewusst gewählten Weges gegen das Lautsein und das schnelle Funktioneren." Er war der Drummer von Me And My Drummer. Jetzt hat Matze Pröllochs sein Solo-Debütalbum fertiggestellt. „Ich muss auf die Bühne, sonst geht es mir nicht gut“, sagt Pröllochs über sich selbst. Folgerichtig war er in den Jahren seit der Auflösung von Me And My Drummer 2018 nicht nur auf Alben von unter anderem Angela Aux, Bayuk oder Leslie Clio zu hören und unterstützte beispielsweise Tristan Brusch, Sookee oder Johanna Amelie bei Konzerten, sondern wandte sich obendrein der Theatermusik zu. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Regisseur Christopher Rüping entstanden preisgekrönte Arbeiten an den großen Theatern quer durch Deutschland. Im Februar nun veröffentlicht Matze Pröllochs sein erstes Album unter eigenem Namen. "Birth No Birth" wird es heißen, und präsentiert einen Mix aus warmen Synthesizer-Klängen, dynamischen Rhythmen und orchestralen Streicherarrangements, irgendwo zwischen Dream-Pop, Trip-Hop und Art-Pop. Auf dem überwiegend instrumental gehaltenen Album entfalten die Momente, in denen gesungen wird, eine umso größere Wirkung: Die Single "Stay" ist eine berührende Reflexion über den Verlust eines ungeborenen Lebens und gibt als Eröffnungssong zugleich den thematischen Rahmen des weiteren Verlaufs als Versuch vor, persönliche Erlebnisse mit Geburt und Fehlgeburt in ein kollektives, musikalisches Narrativ zu überführen.
