Happy New Year! We're back to share our favorite albums of 2025! We have a collective pick and it shouldn't come as a surprise. Getting Killed by Geese has made most of lists and we concur. Song: Geese - “Au pays du cocaine”Grabbing the number 2 spot on Jay & Nick's list was Everything Must Go by Goose. It still does nothing for Greg. His number two pick was Never Enough by Turnstile.Song: Goose - “Give It Time”Jay's third pick was Sam Fender's People Watching, Nick chose MEGAGONG by DOOM GONG, and Greg chose Private Music by Deftones.Songs:Sam Fender - “People Watching”DOOM GONG - "Never Crossed My Mind"Then Greg remembers the late Brigitte Bardot and tells us about his Christmas night listening to Coltrane's last recorded performance.Songs:Serge Gainsbourg - “Bonnie & Clyde”John Coltrane - “My Favorite Things (The Olatunji Concert)”
Don and Dude return to close out the year with the Favorite Albums of 2025 episode, spotlighting two records that prove front-to-back albums still matter in the age of algorithm playlists. The conversation leans into storytelling, production choices, and why these releases rose above a crowded field of new music. The albums:Sam Fender – People Watching (2025) A cinematic heartland rock statement from the North Shields songwriter, filled with big choruses, sax-laced arrangements, and character-driven songs about working-class life, mental health, and the tension between staying rooted and needing to escape. The record traces everyday scenes in pubs and streets, turning quiet moments of anxiety, friendship, and grief into festival-sized anthems that still feel grounded and human.Carter Faith – Cherry Valley (2025) A warm, analog-leaning country debut that builds a whole emotional world around the idea of “Cherry Valley,” a dreamlike place between memory and reality where love, ambition, heartbreak, and self-discovery collide. Mixing classic country storytelling, 1960s pop shimmer, honky-tonk attitude, and cinematic strings, Faith moves from nostalgic longing to barbed humor to hard-won hope over the course of the album.Other Favorites:Curtis Harding – Departures & Arrivals: Adventures of Captain Curt (2025) A semi-concept soul journey where Harding's “Captain Curt” persona drifts through emotional, physical, and spiritual landscapes, blending classic soul, funk, psychedelic rock, and cinematic pop. Built around analog warmth, live-band grooves, and vintage synths, the record turns movement and transition into a cohesive meditation on resilience and connection.Mammoth WVH – The End (2025) Wolfgang Van Halen's third Mammoth album, recorded with a more live, organic approach, pairs hard rock heft with melodic hooks and reflective lyrics about identity, anxiety, and finding hope in a “doomsday” age. Clocking in at a tight 39 minutes, it sharpens the project's post-grunge and modern rock blend into something lean, emotional, and arena-ready.Lucy Dacus – Forever is a Feeling (2025) An intimate indie rock concept album circling queer romance, long-term commitment, and the fear that something beautiful cannot last yet somehow still feels like forever. With lush arrangements, strings, keys, and subtle electronics wrapped around Dacus's steady voice and detailed storytelling, it expands her sound while keeping the focus on devotion, doubt, and time.Sparks – Mad! (2025) A late-career art-pop jolt from the Mael brothers that leans into their most playful, surreal instincts, full of rapid-fire lyrics, character sketches, and flamboyant synth-pop turns. Equal parts witty, theatrical, and precise, the album showcases Sparks' enduring knack for arch humor and tightly constructed, eccentric pop songs.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account” - Oscar WildeHappy New Year!

Joe kicks things off by asking “When was your estimate WAY off?” after the BOM somehow turned a $4 million quote into a $96 million blowout. Then Riley asks “When did you get too competitive?” after he may or may not have taken a wholesome workplace sports day a little too seriously.

It was a great time talking with Jake about his transition from Political Science to music, how he puts a song together, and he had a really good take on when a song is truly finished. He also told us about how doing improv comedy lends itselfto songwriting, and of course, his new album “Idling High” available everywhere! Jake Cassman's music echoes the raw energy of indie rock, the artful melodicism of power pop, and the thoughtful and vulnerable songwriting of the best Americana. And since he began releasing music in 2013, Cassman has embarked on a musical odyssey that has taken him to intimate venues and major stages around the country, drawing in audiences with electric, eclectic performances, and songs that make the intimate seem epic and the political feel personal. This year will see the release of his debut LP, Idling High -- a staggeringly ambitious and disarmingly honest record that showcases Cassman's wry humor, acute observations, and deep compassion. Jake began playing piano at age five, and started writing music soon after. He loved Elton John from an early age -- but when his teacher couldn't show him how to play Green Day songs, he began teaching himself; and when he realized he wanted music to be his career, he left an Ivy League school to pursue it. Since then he has worked as a dueling piano player, musicaltheater composer, improv and sketch comedian, and podcast producer (just to name a few gigs). He is also a published academic and a school music educator, while still finding time to play pickup basketball most weekends and try new beers based on the silliness of their names. Cassman has contributed performances and songs to various political and social justice causes, and his inventive, award-winning music videos bring the stories and ideas from his songs to life in unforgettable ways. His previous project, Drunken Logic, contributed the song and video"What A Beautiful Morning!" to the 2016 anti-Trump compilation 30 Days, 30 Songs alongside R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, and more. Now using his own name, Cassman is poised to join acts like Counting Crows, Frank Turner, Sam Fender, and Lucy Dacus whose music is at once introspective and anthemic, and whose singing and writing voice is both timely and timeless. The UK Government has confirmed it aims to ban people from reselling tickets from live events to make a profit. Restricting ticket scalpers was one of the Labour Government's election pledges, and it comes after Sam Fender, Dua Lipa and Coldplay urged Sir Keir Starmer to take action. UK correspondent Gavin Grey says more details of this plan will be revealed soon. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

These days, buying concert tickets is a huge expense. If fans miss out, they can often find tickets on resale sites at hugely inflated prices. Sometimes people resell their tickets because they can't go but there are also lots of “professional resellers” or ticket touts playing the system and making loads of profit. They buy tickets in bulk from the original seller platform, then mark them up to fans. We hear from a Taylor Swift super fan, who has spent hundreds on resale tickets. Now, a group of musicians including Dua Lipa, Coldplay, Sam Fender and Radiohead have sent a letter to the UK government, asking politicians to introduce a price cap on resale tickets to "stop touts from fleecing fans”. Ireland has already introduced a law to stop people selling tickets for more than their original price. Gary Devitt, who co-founded a platform in Ireland for fan-to-fan ticket resales called Toutless, gives us his view on what effect the law has had. In this episode we hear some stories about buying resale tickets, and ask whether price caps can actually stop the touts. The BBC's music correspondent Mark Savage also explains how ticket touts operate, and what artists could do themselves to reduce dodgy reselling. In which The Curmudgeons take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on ABBA, one of the most endearing pop bands of its era. This Swedish quartet has taken its lumps from critics and snarky scenesters over the years, being labeled cheesy, or inauthentic, or too corny to be taken seriously. We think all of that flak nonsense. We love this band, who lit up the universe with their charming, smile-inducing, dance-up-a-storm hits. ABBA served up something for everyone--empathetic ballads, disco anthems, earnest love songs and way-too-happy-sounding pop nuggets about heartbreak and divorce. We defend them mightily on this episode, and also meditate on their wonderful run of singles over the course of the 1970s. Also, Sam Fender's People Watching picked up the 2025 Mercury Prize for best album. But in an era of music-streaming does the long player still make sense? We hear the thoughts of the boss of one of the legendary names in music retail. And, we debate the week's business and economic stories with our regular experts' panel.

Sam Fender is a singer and songwriter from the town of North Shields in England. He won the Brit Award for Best Rock/Alternative Act twice. His most recent album is called People Watching, and just like his first two albums, it went to #1 on the UK album charts. To help produce the album, Sam enlisted Adam Granduciel, the singer and frontman of the band The War on Drugs. For this episode, I talked to Sam, and his bandmate Joe Atkinson, about the title track from People Watching, and the long journey that it took to get made, from Sam's kitchen, to the Hollywood Hills, to Abbey Road.

Dish welcomes an Irish singer-songwriter and champion of butter! Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, known professionally as CMAT, is a highly engaging and thought provoking musician enjoying a career that goes from strength to strength. She released her debut album, If My Wife New I'd Be Dead, in 2022 with its follow-up, Crazymad, for Me, arriving a year later and receiving a number of accolades, including a place on the Mercury Prize Shortlist. She arrives at the Dish table ahead of the launch of her new record, Euro-Country, which includes the single Running/Planning out on August 29. It's a busy summer for CMAT too, as she heads out on tour supporting Sam Fender across a run of dates before festival season, which includes a stop at Glastonbury with our Nick and Angela in the front row. The year then finishes with her album tour starting in October, including her biggest solo shows ever in Brixton and Dublin. Her energetic, fun live performances, with The Very Sexy CMAT Band, are not to be missed! Angela delivers a Mexican-themed meal starting with guacamole, salsa and corn chips before a serving of Pescado a la Veracruzana – a one-pot wonder of a dish. It's served alongside a Château de Berne Provence Rosé which is one of CMAT's many food and drink passion points. The trio get along famously, chatting about the brilliance of butter, the similarities between delivering a live music show and service at a restaurant and CMAT's choice to go to New York to make her third record– all finished off with two excellent lookalike observations. You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode.Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions.
The quiz was in absolute chaos after being left in the incapable hands of Dean McCulloch on Monday. Let's see how Marcus gets on. TBH it can't be any worse than yesterday's shambles. Want to get up to date with all the latest things? We've got you covered. What do you do when Radio 1 Big Weekend headliner Sam Fender is staying at the same hotel you're having your wedding party at? You chat to him of course. MT did just that. Sam did not disappoint. Lovely man. We needed cheering up. So thinking back to good times… Remember when Owen came on Everyone's Rubbish to tell us about his nightmare day at work when he smashed 10,000 eggs? Well he's text in for the 10 Minute Take Over and we've called him back. Happy Birthday Owen the Egg Man. Have a smashing day!
