This week, we are joined by Sue Carpenter, the author and director of 40 WATTS FROM NOWHERE, which documents her pirate radio stations in SF and LA.We talk about what made her want to turn her book into a documentary, how her station also became a theatrical experience, the incredible amount of documentation she did considering it was a pirate radio station, what makes starting a traditional radio station almost impossible, her incredible roster of DJs from Mike Watt to Keith Morris, climbing over her bed to broadcast, people triangulating the station's signal to try to find her, theft and the unknowns of running the station, getting artists like The Jesus & Mary Chain and Spiritualized to the station's secret location, the film Pump Up The Volume, how the FCC found out about the station and the final showdown for the station. So head to the left of the dial on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!SUE CARPENTER:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nnNX1AeB_ghttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/224894.40_Watts_from_NowhereREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. An interview with investigative journalist Gardiner Harris regarding his newly released exposé No More Tears that unpacks Johnson & Johnson's white collar criminality, murderous corporate malfeasance, and myriad coverup conspiracies that have left millions dead.Support the show by subscribing to the PPM Patreon and gain access to a bonus, solo ep that explores Gardiner's father's fascinating career as a bureau chief at Time Inc. and protege of spooky, anticommunist publisher Henry Luce (a mini-primer on Luce's myriad ties to intelligence, Cuban paramilitaries, Gladio via his wife Clare Boothe Luce, and the JFK assassination):patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping***One day in 2004, Gardiner Harris, a pharmaceutical reporter for The New York Times, was early for a flight and sat down at an airport bar. He struck up a conversation with the woman on the barstool next to him, who happened to be a drug sales rep for Johnson & Johnson. Her horrific story about unethical sales practices and the devastating impact they'd had on her family fundamentally changed the nature of how Harris would cover the company—and the entire pharmaceutical industry. His subsequent investigations and ongoing research since that very first conversation led to this book—a blistering exposé of a trusted American institution and the largest healthcare conglomerate in the world.Harris takes us light-years away from the company's image as the child-friendly “baby company” as he uncovers reams of evidence showing decades of deceitful and dangerous corporate practices that have threatened the lives of millions. He covers multiple disasters: lies and cover-ups regarding the link of Johnson's Baby Powder to cancer, the surprising dangers of Tylenol, a criminal campaign to sell antipsychotics that have cost countless lives, a popular drug used to support cancer patients that actually increases the risk that cancer tumors will grow, and deceptive marketing that accelerated opioid addictions through their product Duragesic (fentanyl) that rival even those of the Sacklers and Purdue Pharma.Filled with shocking and infuriating but utterly necessary revelations, No More Tears is a landmark work of investigative journalism that lays bare the deeply rooted corruption behind the image of babies bathing with a smile.***Songs:| The Chemical Brothers - "The Pills Won't Help You Now" || Spiritualized - "Medication" |

“When my father was seeing another woman, God allowed my mother to hear everything my dad said or even thought.” ---------- Hi! Trapper Jack here. Movie watching has led to our topic this week. The music that has bubbled up in my head comes from the movie Superman with Christopher Reeve. It's a particular piece of music that plays while Superman is taking Lois Lane on a flight over Metropolis. We hear her thoughts. As she wonders, 'Can you read my mind? 'I'm holding hands with a god.' Spiritualized, the scene leads us to the reality that God is always reading our minds. If you reflect on the last few episodes, it's all about our minds. Are we sharing the mind of God, or have we created God in our image? Sadly, we are finding out how often we are in opposition to our heavenly Father, and His Biblical View. The upside in this episode is what the Holy Spirit can do within us, when we are in alignment with Him. It's fantastic and supernatural! Author, journalist, music critic Jim Sullivan joined us about his new book "Backstage & Beyond Vol. 2: 45 Years of Classic Rock Chats & Rants. This is a follow up to his volume 1 edition. The difference between the two comes down to a split between eras. Volume 1 covers Classic Rock from the '50s and 60s. Vol 2 picks up where that one leaves off covering the '70s '80s and '90s. Twenty-one of them are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Jim Sullivan — a 2023 inductee into the New England Music Hall of Fame — spent 26 years writing for the Boston Globe and two decades more writing for national publications. He has interviewed and reviewed countless musicians, many of them multiple times. Access to such A-list stars is hard to come by in the first place, but Sullivan got to know many of them well enough to engage on a far more intimate level than journalists usually can or do.Rather than simply collect up previously published articles as they originally appeared, Sullivan combed through his archive to find everything he wrote about each artist and worked them together into a more expansive time-passages view that chronicles their changing situations, outlooks and experiences. Backstage & Beyond Volume 1 includes fascinating, entertaining and occasionally hair-raising profiles of Jerry Lee Lewis, Ian Hunter & Mott the Hoople, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Nico, Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music, Robert Fripp & King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Warren Zevon, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies & the Kinks, Dave Davies, Ginger Baker, Leonard Cohen, Marianne Faithfull, John Fogerty, Tina Turner, Neil Young, Richard Thompson, Darlene Love, Alice Cooper, Peter Wolf & the J. Spiritual Lessons from Betsie ten Boom - My Historical Mentors, Part 6

Leslie continues her Historical Mentors series with a powerful look at the example of Betsie ten Boom. “Spiritualized chaos” is what defines much of modern Christianity. Betsie had every reason - circumstantially speaking - to let frustration, anger, defeat, depression, and chaos rule in her soul and in her outward environment. Yet she chose a different pattern - God's pattern. Betsie allowed the light, joy, peace, and order of Jesus Christ to transform her from the inside out, and it affected everything about her life - from her countenance, to her words, to even creating an atmosphere of beauty in her prison cell. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Jame Lathren formed Candy Coffins in 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. A cultural outcast, his resilience, sensitivity and hyperawareness of his emotional state would ultimately permeate his own music, getting right to the heart of the emotions surrounding the human condition. After disbanding his band Crown The Cake, he formed Candy Coffins with hometown guitar legend Tom Alewine (Bachelors of Art), followed by seasoned bassist Alex Mabrey, keyboardist Justin Purdy and drummer Jonathan Bradley (Iron & Wine). With dynamic and textured approach, the band's trademark lush sound bolsters Lathren's emotive songwriting and delivery. With tasteful nods to Joy Division, The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, The Afghan Whigs and The Cult, as well as The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Interpol, Candy Coffins' sound is dark and emotionally restless, but with elements of hope and elation. Defiantly unique, their sound is a welcome respite from musical mediocrity.

This week, we're stepping outside the bounds of wellness 'cult'ure etiquette with an honest peek behind the curtain of a multi-billion dollar industry - YOGA. Cultural appropriation. Wealthy white-centric standards of wellness. Spiritualized abuse of power. These are some of the mainstays of western yoga. Sybil Nance has been involved in the world of yoga since 1994 and has worked as an international teacher trainer, studio co-owner, and yoga therapist. In this episode, she shares some of her personal experiences and hard-earned insights around retreat culture, trauma-informed considerations, and culty norms like performative trauma therapy. Candice shares about her own experiences in yoga/wellness training environments and how an understanding of confirmation bias has helped her to demystify 'the practice.' Sybil grapples with her former role as a teacher trainer and how she was trained to mimic a teaching style that, upon closer inspection, was traumatizing and coercive. She speaks openly about the regret she experienced when she realized she was paying her trauma forward. She and her former colleagues have since reunited and made repairs with students they once trained, and she shares how the impact has rippled outward. More recently, Sybil was delivered a white woman wake-up call during a trip to India, and her story inspires a discussion around the insidiousness of a colonizing headspace. Finally, Sybil shares why she thinks the idea of 'making a living' as a yoga teacher is problematic and may be actively contributing to ever-increasing inequity. Sybil Nance has worked in the yoga world since the early 90's as a international teacher trainer, the co-founder of a small boutique yoga studio, and a teacher trainer in yoga therapy. Currently Sybil offers small virtual programs supporting women as a spiritual mentor. She is trauma informed and she sits with women as they uncover their story of origin trauma patterns. She is a mom, step mom, sister, daughter, aunt, and grandmother. She is open to the work of repair and is fascinated in how varied and spectacular that work is. web: lovesybil.com | IG: @sybil_sukhaReferenced in this episode:Practice And All Is Coming: Abuse, Cult Dynamics, and Healing In Yoga And Beyond, by Matthew RemskiAmerican Detox: The Myth of Wellness, by Kerri KellyEmbrace Yoga's Roots: Courageous Ways To Deepen Your Yoga Practice, by Susanna Barkataki | Susanna Barkataki on InstagramBikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator (Netflix)Support the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. To say that God is all you need reduces your life to a “you and God in a silo,” which might sound nice if you're prone to spiritualize everything while not factoring in reality. Spiritualized sloganeering typically fails the eye test in real-world dynamics. For example, you must have friends if your aim is to live out the grander purposes of the gospel. I'm not speaking of needing friends in an inverted “what can you do for me” way, but a worldview of friendship that minimizes loneliness as a side-effect of other-centered initiatives. Thus, the question we want to explore is, “What are the objectives of friendships?” Read Here: https://lifeovercoffee.com/i-want-more-than-god-is-it-wrong-to-want-someone-to-love-me/ Will you help us so we can continue to provide free content to the world? Shoegaze is a term tossed out whenever a band leans in on the wall-of-sound distortion and pairs it with obscured vocals and dreamy feedback. But few bands actually stuck to My Bloody Valentine's template, adding their own flavors like the 1993 debut album Against Perfection by Adorable. Here the vocals are less obscured, and even hooky at times, recalling everyone from Echo & the Bunnymen and The Smiths to The Verve and Spiritualized. But it's not just the vocals that give Adorable a unique twist, as the rhythm section, especially an occasional Pixies-like bassline, gets their times to shine as well.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Breathless 17:49 - Sister Chapel Ceiling 21:26 - Homeboy 28:07 - Sunshine Smile 34:45 - Still Life Outro - A To Fade In   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Not like you're spiraling out of control but you're going around and around and on each revolution you hold onto the good each time.
