While Amy is off at Cannes, Paul welcomes Joanna Robinson for an Unspooled Critics' Choice episode on Josie and the Pussycats, the 2001 musical comedy that was lightyears ahead of its time. They revisit Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan's razor-sharp satire of pop music, consumer culture, and corporate branding and unpack how a movie stuffed with logos became one of Hollywood's smartest critiques of marketing. JFD returns just in time to spoil your Memorial Day weekend with a trio of cult flicks, two loosely connected to the world of Archie Comics and one that is decidedly not.Up first, is Hot Times (AKA A Hard Day For Archie), a raunchy sex comedy from 1974 with characters roughly modeled after Archie and his gang but instead of Riverdale, they live in grimy 70's New York City. Directed by celebrated underground director Jim McBride, the plot (as it is) follows Archie as he tried to get laid on New Year's Eve.Next, we have the sprawling, methodical Lake of Illusions from 1982. A Toho release about a young woman working in a history-themed bath house who loves to run and loves her dog but finds her world turned upside down when he canine companion is killed. And finally, early 2000's pop culture is on full display in Josie and the Pussycats from 2001 starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid as a pop-punk band who finds themselves in the middle of a capitalist conspiracy when they are inexplicably signed to a major label and marketed as the next big thing. All this plus Obsession chat, Kevin's adventures in the Motor City, 70's Brazilian cult cinema debuting stateside, Sam Raimi gets into dolls, more flicks from Indonesian horror icon Suzanna to own and so much more!LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan's teen musical comedy gave a well-deserved ribbing to the advertising and music execs of the early ‘00s, as well as teen culture in general. But at what point does this satire become part of the problem? Shall we ask Tara Reid? And what were they putting in Sunny Delight in the late ‘90s? Learn more about your ad choices. Twenty-five years ago, this high-energy musical adaptation of the both the comic book and TV cartoon was released to much hype....and no one showed up. :( It was a sizeable flop at the box office but has since garned a devoted cult following as a result of its sharp satire and catchy soundtrack. It's a seemingly simple story about three young ladies from the small town of Riverdale who are just trying to break out with their band, The Pussycats. They include Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), Melody (Tara Reid), and Valerie (Rosario Dawson) and one day, they are just toiling to pick up their next gig when they are suddenly discovered by a shady record producer Wyatt (Alan Cumming) who seems something special in them. They are whisked off to New York City, signed to his label run by the ruthless Fiona (Parker Posey) and overnight, they become a pop sensation now named, "Josie and the Pussycats." However, their success comes with some unexpected consquences and they soon find themselves embroiled in a massive conspiracy involving the delivery of subliminal messages through pop music. :o Directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Can't Hardly Wait), this enduring cult hit also co-stars Gabriel Mann, Missi Pyle, and Carson Daly (!)....as you've NEVER seen him before! DuJour means friendship! This week, Peaches and Michael are sharing a bus pass photo in celebration of 2001's JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS! In addition to discussing the undeniably rockin' soundtrack, our hosts delve into this cult fave's predictive and damning take on capitalist culture. Joining the conversation is acclaimed entertainment journalist and host Jamie Jirak, who reflects on her evolving relationship with Riverdale's most infamous punk rock prom queens. Then, celebrated author and comedian Elizabeth Teets stops by to talk about Josie's resonance and how the film foresaw the rise of “trend pimps.” From Fiona to Mr. Moviefone, this episode has it all! Go!

They were three small time girls, with big time dreams. Now, fate is giving the Pussycats the chance of a lifetime. On this week's episode of Hot Dave's Summer Film Fest Vol. V: The Future is Super Female!, a group of aspiring rock stars from Riverdale must foil the evil plans of Alan Cumming and Parker Posey as they use the power of subliminal advertising to sell a bunch of garbage to the youth of America. It's…Josie and the Pussycats. I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we prepare to drop our totally awesome new album are fellow cinephiles and Josie fanboys, Mike and Ryan. Topics of discussion in this episode include the bizarre legacy of Riverdale and its many inhabitants; we question whether or not critics in the year 2001 knew what satire was; and finally, we pour one out for the music industry of yore as we talk about the death of the music video generation. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Some people move to Texas for the brisket. Others come for the low taxes, wide skies, or a spiritual reawakening via H-E-B. But for Chelsea Nicole; fearless co-host, cinephile, and recent expatriate from the state that resembles a giant penis (Florida); it was the promise of freedom. And by freedom, I mean the chance to resurrect a 2001 cult classic starring Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson, and Rachael Leigh Cook in glitter eyeliner and low-rise pants: Josie and the Pussycats. Yes, Chelsea is back and officially a Texan, meaning she's now legally allowed to say “y'all” unironically and has probably already been gifted a gun and a pair of boots. To celebrate her Lone Star residency, we opened the vault of cinematic absurdity and dusted off Josie and the Pussycats, a film once dismissed as bubblegum fluff but now understood; by the enlightened few; as a prophetic takedown of corporate culture, mass marketing, and boy band brainwashing. Joining the pod is none other than returning champion and editor extraordinaire Kristi Shimek, whose knowledge of the craft is only matched by her ability to say "DuJour means bus pass" with a straight face. Together with Chelsea, Dan, and myself, we deep-dive into this satirical pop-rock opus on episode #129 of Fear and Loathing in Cinema Podcast. The post Episode #129 – Josie and the Pussycats (2001) first appeared on Boomstick Comics.

On this jerkin' (FREE BONUS!!!!!) episode of the Girl Mode subseries, Nicole is joined by the iconic multi-hyphenate visionary behind Fucktoys, Annapurna Sriram, to discuss the once maligned and deeply misunderstood Y2K pop satire Josie and the Pussycats, another cult camp classic proudly reclaimed by the girls (and the gays) as the Best Movie Ever. Before Riverdale updated and franchised the Archie Comics for modern audiences, A Very Brady Sequel screenwriters Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan took Dan DeCarlo's groovy girl band and put them at the center of They Live-plot against industry plants and consumer capitalism's mind-controlling powers over the youth of America. Smarter than it has any right to be, so of course critics at the time were ready to dismiss it as trivial teenage girl shit. Opens on an Backstreet Boys parody group singing about anal sex. Let's go back in time and meet Snoopy! 178 - Josie & The Pussycats with Niall McGowan In this episode, we're strumming the power chords of early 2000s pop culture with the glittering, satirical cult classic Josie & The Pussycats! Joining us is none other than Niall McGowan, co-host of Bat Minute and a connoisseur of all things comic and cinematic. Together, we dive into the neon-drenched world of Josie, Melody, and Val as they rocket from small-town dreamers to unwitting pop pawns in a plot to brainwash teens. We explore the film's razor-sharp (and still shockingly relevant) commentary on consumerism, the music industry, and branding overload, all while appreciating the infectious soundtrack that still slaps today. Niall brings his signature wit and deep pop culture knowledge to unpack the film's surprising comic roots, its place in early-2000s cinema, and why Josie & The Pussycats deserves way more love than it got on its original release. So slap on your cat ears, crank up the volume, and join us as we celebrate one of the most delightfully subversive "bubblegum" movies ever made! "Du Jour means seat belts. Du Jour means crash positions!" We get to an early 00s cult classic in kitten ears, "Josie and the Pussycats", this week with our friend Jessica Granger. Critics didn't really know what to do with this razor-sharp satire of the music industry and consumerism when it came out back in 2001, but we're here to say this movie still holds up. We discuss all three of our Pussycats: Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson, early aughts MTV and the stranglehold TRL had on the youth. Not to mention the duo of villains played by the iconic Alan Cumming and Parker Posey, as well as its banger of a soundtrack with some major street cred behind some of the songs. Conform! Free will is overrated! Jump on the bandwagon! Another franchise! This week is all about Josie and the Pussycats, with a special focus on 2001's subversive comedy of the same name. Both of our hosts had such a blast revisiting this movie from our high school years. Spoiler alert: it holds up really well! Musically, we have a main course of pop-punk with a Motown appetizer and a side of cool art-pop thanks to Josie and the band's appearances in Riverdale. Plus: Alexandria Perez calls in with some Pussycats info!
Katie returns with Tony to review 2001's Josie and the Pussycats, starring Rachel Leah Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Alan Cumming, and Parker Posey.

Hello, I'm Em. And yes, I'm a podcast host. No, I said cappuccino. I'm here to talk to you about something very important. And no, it's not about me or my podcast. I'm here to talk about subliminal messages in rock and roll music. Or as it's simply known in some cultures, 'rock music'.You see, for years the government has been wisely coercing teenagers to buy products they normally wouldn't want, just to get their money.Fact! Kids don't have bills to pay. Fact! They don't pay taxes. But! They do babysit and hold minimum wage jobs that earn them wads of cash as substantial as, well, my body of work. But kids today aren't dumb. They're not gonna buy just anything. That's why the government has been planting small subliminal advertising suggestions in today's rock music. The results? We can now get these kids to buy just about anything. We can have them chasing a new trend every week. And that is good for the economy. And what's good for the economy... is good for the country. So God bless the United States Of America - the most ass-kickin' country... in the world! And god bless Josie and the Pussycats!(Let's hope this episode isn't a "take the Chevy to the levy" situation. Du Jour means seat belts! Du Jour means crash positions!)Ross Burlingame's IndieGoGo for Best Movie Ever: A Totally Jerkin' Book, an oral history of Josie and the Pussycats can be found hereEpisode originally released 18th March 2021Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. By an overwhelming vote, Josie and the Pussycats was chosen as the MOTM for November. This widely misunderstood 2001 release has acquired a much stronger reputation over the pat two decades. The satirical edge of the movie and it's meta-approach was largely ignored in the marketing of the film on it's release. Our herd of LAMBs this week however have made note of it's wicked insight into pop culture and music and we have some pretty strong positive opinions to share. Todd Liebenow, Bubbawheat and the Vern join the show and "Pretend to be Nice". For us the three small words are "This Movie's Great".
MONSTER PARTY GETS... WAY OUT! WAY OUT! SHAWN SHERIDAN, JAMES GONIS, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pack their audio pic-a-nic baskets, for a journey through animation history! Join us for a wacky race into the exciting world of... HANNA-BARBERA! WILLIAM HANNA and JOSEPH BARBERA were the innovative team behind many of the world's favorite cartoons. Over their long career, they were responsible for such memorable characters as TOM & JERRY, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR, THE JETSONS, SCOOBY DOO, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, TOP CAT, SECRET SQUIRREL, HONG KONG PHOOEY, THE WACKY RACES, ATOM ANT, SNAGGLEPUSS, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME, and HUNDREDS more! HANNA-BARBERA also blazed a trail when it came to producing adventure cartoons. This was the team that brought us JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, SUPER FRIENDS, SHAZZAN, VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS, and many other fantastical Saturday morning staples. Not satisfied with the status quo, HANNA and BARBERA ventured out into the world of feature films, giving us THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR!, and the beloved animated classic, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If that's not enough for you folks, they even tackled live-action with THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR, DANGER ISLAND, MYSTERY ISLAND, and the under-appreciated live-action/animation hybrid, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN! Of course, we don't have the space to list all of HANNA-BARBERA'S achievements. That's what the episode is for. But, speaking of that! There was only one guest we could have booked for this epic topic. He's a friend of the show, appearing (along with fellow MP friend, CONSTANTINE NASR) on our CHRISTMAS SPECIALS episode, and has an awe-inspiring resume. He's a two-time Grammy-nominated and Addy-winning freelance writer, editor, and producer with 30 years of magic with The Walt Disney Company and over 40 years of professional writing and production experience! He's the author of MOUSE TRACKS: THE STORY OF WALT DISNEY RECORDS, and the recent (and dare we say, timely) book... HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY- FROM MODERN STONE AGE TO MEDDLING KIDS. And be sure to check out his podcast, THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA & BARBERA. Please welcome back the also funtastic... GREG EHRBAR! NOW, GET TO LISTENING... OR MEET YOUR YABBA DABBA DOOOOM!
