Video - https://youtu.be/54n4bqpFC2sNaturalist and ArcheoAstronomer, Bernie Taylor, joins InnerVerse to discuss his groundbreaking work, Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero. In this discussion, we discover the monomyth in ancient cave wall rock art, search for the identity of the Cosmic Man, consider the magnitude of primal pareidolia, discern tribal customs and laws from cave art, and ponder ancient clues as to the origin of constellations. In the Plus+ Extension, we discuss biological time as encoded in rock art, the beginnings of animalistic calendrical symbolism, the Atlas mountains as the potential birthplace of astronomy, the reason for caves as the first initiation spaces, the mythical underpinnings of pseudo-scientific cosmology such as the big bang and multiverse, the first written languages, and the Tifinagh script of North Africa. My guest today is Bernie Taylor, a naturalist, author and archaeoastronomer whose research explores the origins of mankind's creativity and awareness of the natural world. He's authored several books, including Biological Time and Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero, which explores mankind's creative capacity by looking at Paleolithic cave art from 40,000 years ago. Bernie proposes that select cave paintings are fundamental pieces in the human journey to self-realization, the foundation of astronomy, and a record of biological knowledge that irrevocably impacted some of the artistic styles, religious practices, and stories that are still with us today. I found Bernie to be deeply knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I truly enjoyed our conversation and I hope you do as well. . In our conversation we discussed ancient cave art, human history and evolution, Jung's concept of the collective unconscious, animism and its impact in modern society, spirituality versus projection, the psychological significance of stories, how stories relate to dreams and myth, the Hero archetype and its evolution throughout time. Bernie Taylor is an independent naturalist, thought leader and author whose research explores the mythological connections and biological knowledge among prehistoric, indigenous and ancient peoples. His works in these areas include Biological Time (2004) and Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero (2017). Before Orion is premised on Joseph's Campbell's hero's journey monomyth that is at the core of stories worldwide among indigenous peoples, the ancients, and our modern society. Before Orion explores a deeper root for this monomyth by looking at how hunter-gatherers viewed themselves within the natural and spiritual worlds through Palaeolithic cave art from 40,000 years ago. Taylor proposes that select cave paintings are fundamental pieces in the human journey to self-realization, the foundation of written language, and a record of biological knowledge that irrevocably impacted some of the artistic styles, religious practices, and stories that are still with us. Taylor addresses a profound archaeological elephant in the room by opening up an uncharted place in our history, which points to the cultural ancestors of mankind in western North Africa. Before Orion will change the idea of who you think you are.For this episode we are moving away a little from the narrative approach to history that we usually follow. For this episode we will be turning to the realm of myth that we have only really covered in passing throughout the series. Though we will not be running through the usual stories of Greek Mythology, we will be instead looking to the deeper past where Greek civilisation has yet to appear. This will see us looking back some 10's of thousands of years before the rise of Greek culture where stories that we find familiar in Greek mythology were also present. Bernie Taylor will take us back these tens of thousands of years to a cave site on the Iberian Peninsula, or modern-day Spain. In our talk, Bernie took me on a fascinating journey of his research and the ideas he has developed. I found this then turned into a great discussion and I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as I did engaging with Bernie. A lot of what we talk about is very visual and so I have provided a number of pictures on the episode page over at the Casting Through Ancient Greece website, while I have also provided Bernie Taylors links where you will be able to find even more resources. Any I hope you enjoy the next couple of hours.Bernie Taylor Twitter @BernieTaylorOr Before Orion Twitter @BeforeOrion Before Orion website Before Orion Kindle Support the show

Belief in angelic or human-bird/avianoid as a messenger between the divine and humans is found in the Abrahamic, ancient Greek, Mesopotamian and Egyptian records, and worldwide among shamanic and animistic peoples. Are these beings real or just mortal projections? Or in between? We traveled to prehistoric and ancient history to find out. We were joined by Bernie Taylor, author of Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero. The show got very Jungian archetypal, alternative archeological, and just awe-inspiring. In this episode I am joined by Naturalist and Thought Leader Bernie Taylor, author of Before Orion: Finding the face of the hero. Bernie talks to me about his work researching the Altamira caves in Spain, where some of the earliest Homo-sapien cave art has been found. He explains the idea that the stories told in ancient history by the Sumerians and Ancient Greeks, where taken from stories being told tens of thousands of years ago and recorded in places such as Altamira. We discuss the evolution of abstract thought and art in Humans, how this may have impacted our species and the role art or more specifically, Artistic thinkers played in our prehistoric story. Then the conversations takes an intriguing tangent into a discussion on the value of Neuro-diversity in our species. An area that ties in with my full time job supporting Neuro-diverse children and young people and their families. We then tied this into Bernie's work and some ideas around Neuro-types in the past and how today's productivity driven society has perhaps left less room for visual thinkers with what are now considered 'Disorder's such as Dyslexia. Bernie has some big ideas, which I love! There are some connections that are admittedly a bit of a leap from my perspective and I did try to challenge these, but he clearly has tons of expertise, experience and knowledge to back his ideas up. I really enjoyed the conversation and I hope you do to. To check out his work head to https://beforeorion.com/ To watch this conversation check out the youtube channel https://youtu.be/ArEnkTpjqpc

Scholars have long believed in the origin of the canine/ human relationship to be that of human mastery and canine servitude. Theories/ stories abound that wolves scavenged the campfires of prehistoric man. Eating discarded food items from the outskirts of our caves or as some believe that man had captured young wolf pups and raised them to manipulate their very nature into serving our specific needs. This episode we have naturalist and author Bernie Taylor to discuss a different view of domestic canine origins and to help us find more clarity in how our relationships developed over the last 40,000 years.
