What is it that makes you who you are? In the West we live with a passionately autobiographical sense of self – I am who I am so long as I can tell my own story. Research tells us that people are more afraid of dementia than cancer because loss of identity is the worst thing we can imagine. But are there other ways to think about this? Beginning from the experience of people whose identity is seemingly dissolving in dementia, two of our greatest theologians will consider what it really means to be a human being. They will reflect on what roles our bodies, communities, faith and memories play, and ask how God in the person of Christ invites us to a radically new consideration of our humanity in all its variety and vulnerability, including its place in the very heart of the divine life. John Swinton is the Director of The Centre for Spirituality, Health and Disability and the Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. His theology is founded in his background in nursing, ministry and healthcare chaplaincy. His books include Dementia: Living in the Memories of God, winner of the 2016 Michael Ramsey Prize for best contemporary theological writing, and Becoming Friends of Time: Disability, Timefullness, and Gentle Discipleship (both SCM Press). Rowan Williams is the Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge and was formerly Archbishop of Canterbury. He is a poet and theologian and the author of numerous academic and popular works of theology, including Being Christian, Being Disciples, and Being Human: Bodies, Minds, Persons (all SPCK). Chaired by Canon Tricia Hillas and recorded on 16 April 2018.

Transformation Tuesdays was inspired by the CD "The Jesus Question" by Matthew Kelly. Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione and Aaron Emig recap the Gospel from the prior Sunday and give action steps and resources to transform our lives for that week every Tuesday at 2:10 p.m. at Morris Hall from Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville, IL…A Spiritual Home from Everyone. Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: Hello, I’m Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione Aaron Emig: And I’m Aaron Emig and we are celebrating Pentecost Sunday… The Question for this week is…Are we being disciples and making disciples? The Gospel comes from: John 20:19-23 Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: Most Christians don’t think about the theological fact that we cannot love God without the Holy Spirit. We have a gift of free will and the Holy Spirit guides us to use that gift properly. We need the Holy Spirit. He gives us power, peace and pardon. St. Paul says, "No one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit." It might seem strange to say it this way, but when we pray, its God who has prompted us to do so. God the Holy Spirit inspires us, through the example of Jesus the Son, to pray to the Father. Yes, I know it sounds strange, but when you think about it, it makes sense. By the workings of the Holy Spirit, most especially through The Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, we become sons and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit enables us to walk with God, to love God, and even to believe in God. Our “Yes” to God, begins first with the guidance or inspiration of God --- in the person of the Holy Spirit. Aaron Emig: Jesus gives us the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit… He is the one that helps and guides us throughout our lives… He is the one that helps us become disciples and gives us the courage to spread the Gospel to all nations… He is to one that gives us to speak from our hearts… Again, by building our personal relationship with Jesus, He will send down the Spirit during any situation in our lives for guidance and strength… Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: As St. Augustine says that, the Holy Spirit not only makes us capable of loving God; he also enables us to love our neighbor. Love of God…. Love of neighbor. Last week’s Gospel spoke about discipleship. Remember, that’s what Jesus told us in last week’s Gospel, “Go and MAKE Disciples” …. The power of the Holy Spirit is an essential part of Being a disciple, being open to Growing as a disciple and going forth into the world and Making disciples. We all need the Holy Spirit to have a relationship with God, we all need the Holy Spirit when Being Disciples, Growing Disciples and Making Disciples. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of us your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of you love, so that we may live each day as intentional disciples, and by the life we live, to inspire others to do the same. Aaron Emig: People ask how what do I say to proclaim the Good News? We just need the Holy Spirit to be our advocate which helps us speak from our hearts and that is what need to be said… We need to ask the Holy Spirit each day for guidance… We need to pray for the courage and wisdom to bring new disciples to Jesus… Instead of trying to figure it out ourselves we just need to rely on the Holy Spirit each and every day to lead us to the best choices for us in our lives…. Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: Wisdom Words for the Week Are… “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.” Unknown Aaron Emig: Transformation Tool… The Joy of the Gospel book by Pope Francis Aaron Emig: Transformation Tuesdays Prayer… “Jesus, how do You want me to transform my life today?” Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: Easter Blessing… May God continue to bless each and every one of you, may He fill your lives with Easter joy today and every day. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Deacon Jimmy Ghiglione: God Bless from Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church…A Spiritual Home for Everyone

Matthew 7:7-9; 6:8-15 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Being Disciples means to forgive offenses as God, in Christ, has forgiven us. Easy to say. Easy to offer up statements to ease our suffering when people stab us in the back and tear down our world. Did Jesus really mean what he said in the Sermon on the Mount? Why? But perhaps more important than the why, is the how. How can we, forgive like Christ has forgiven us? Are you carrying resentment? Your family. Your former church. Your current church. Your work. Your children. Your neighbors. Join us for a formative discussion on how the followers of Jesus learn and grow in forgiveness.

This podcast session features my talk at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, South Texas Area Fall Retreat, in Corpus Christi, TX. I was asked to present on the topic, "Being Disciples, Making Disciples". Discipleship is often overlooked because it is not as flashy as speaking, or leading worship, but it is vital in order to make a positive impact on the world. You and I should take discipleship seriously. I believe that this is something that you can start this week. I hope this series of talks will give you some inspiration (and valuable insight) to disciple someone very soon.
