As society has changed, it seems we have become more uncomfortable talking with people about our faith. We are reluctant conversationalists. The reality is that many of our churches and communities are shrinking instead of growing. What can we do about this? Don Everts, himself a reluctant witness, grew up assuming that spiritual conversations are always painful and awkward. But after falling into one spiritual conversation after another, he was surprised to discover that they aren't. Unpacking what God's Word says about spiritual conversations and digging into the habits of eager conversationalists, Everts will describe what we can learn from Christians who are still talking about their faith.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We all know in our gut that family meals are important. Numerous studies have linked family meals with all sorts of positive outcomes for children, from better academics to general success. My favorite statistic comes from Don Everts and the Barna Group in their study of Christian households that found that families who were considered “spiritually vibrant” were homes that regularly had loud tables. But even though we know family meals are important, many of us don't practice daily shared meals. In fact, the average American family only has three dinners together per week. That's because meals are hard! A lot must come together to make a family meal happen. And once you get everyone at the table, they aren't immediately idyllic. Meals with kids can be super chaotic and sometimes can feel like more work than they are worth. Wouldn't it be better to just feed them early, put them to bed, and have a grown-up meal? Table fellowship with our kids is possible and it can be a source of deep joy for both parents and kids alike.  Listen in for a conversation with counselor, Bible teacher, and writer Heather Robinson (MA, SBTS) about why meals matter and for some great advice for making meals rhythms we look forward to rather than dread.

There's a tension in all of us when it comes to engaging with a culture and people who think, live, and believe differently than we think, live, and believe, but that's exactly what Jesus has called us to do as His spirit-filled followers. We are called to be influencers of culture, not just spectators or judges of it. No matter who you are, where you're at, or what season of life you are in, God has you where He has you to advance the Gospel through you. This week's episode unpacks what exactly "culture" is and means, what the heart of Jesus is for the culture, and how we (as His followers) are to engage with the culture for the sake of the Gospel.Click here to let us know what you think about today's episode and give us suggestions for future episodes. Follower of One : Missions For The Rest Of Us

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2021 4:11

Hey, do you love Jesus? I wrestled with the idea of loving Jesus. I want to continue our conversation from yesterday. When we talked about how we are become the will of God in John 14:15, Jesus says. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Now, two verses earlier, he said, whatever you ask in my name that will I do. And he reiterated that in the verse in between. And now this next verse says, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. To follow Jesus, we must love him, but I always felt like I didn't love him. I felt like my love for him was one of those things I knew I should have, but I didn't have, it was hard for me to appreciate and love Jesus. I was too analytical. I think about my faith. I, some people have trouble loving him and other people jump right to loving him over time. I have come to love him more and appreciate him more, what he does in my life and the way he changes me. And the way he makes things work in my life. I'm learning to appreciate and enjoy more. But love is not just a feeling. Love is also a choice. Love is something that we do. I want to love Jesus. I want to obey him. I want to do what he said. That's love when I do what someone else tells me to do, I'm showing some love for them. And when I listen to Jesus and obey him, I'm loving him too. My goal is a follower of Jesus is to love him by following him. And he commanded us. He had a basic command. The great commandment is love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Love God and love people. I want to love God and love people more. How about you? How do you love people at work? How do you demonstrate your love for Jesus in the workplace? For me, it's making time for people and helping them move one notch closer to Jesus. It's about being someone who's trustworthy. There's a book called I Once Was Lost. What Postmodern Skeptics Taught Us About Their Path to Jesus. I just messed up the title. I Once Was Lost by Don Everts and Doug Schaupp. And I would encourage you to check that book out. It talked about five gates through which people go, who are post-modern and want nothing to do with Jesus. They go through these five gates as they come to Jesus. Trusting Jesus. Being the fifth gate, the first gate is they trust another Christian. The challenge for us. And I want to challenge us today to be trustworthy. People let's be trustworthy for the people that we interact with. The people that we work with. Let's be people who don't have an ulterior motive or ulterior objective, but instead we just want to serve the people that we're around. Let's ask God to show us how to be trustworthy to our coworkers. To me, that's our challenge for today. I want to thank you for being a marketplace minister, and I want to thank you for being a follower of Jesus Christ and for trying to make a difference with your faith in the world. You can connect with us at followerofone.org. You can also go to followerofone.org and sign up for the next marketplace mission trip, where we practice these activities today, let's be trustworthy believers in the marketplace and watch Jesus use us as we do our jobs. While the divisiveness of our current moment in the United States may be regrettable and fatiguing, it also represents an incredible opportunity for Christians,” writes Don Everts in the current issue of Influence magazine. He goes on to say, “As church leaders, our job is not only to help Christians recognize the temptations we’re facing, but also to highlight another way: a way of neighborly love that can cut through all the yelling and point others to the beauty of the gospel.” I’m George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I’m talking to Everts about how Christians can be good neighbors in a divided culture. Have you ever stopped to think about what the decisions you make in your house say about the person you are? Why do you want the lawn to be perfectly manicured? Do you like the aesthetic because it makes you feel good and creates a comfortable place for you and your family? Or do you spend hours each week working on your yard because you don't want your neighbors to judge you? A mundane decision like mowing a lawn can say something profound about who we are, but we have to be willing to look deeper at the motives that drive us. Because as Don Everts points out in this chapter, once we learn to evaluate the motives behind our home lives, our home lives become an integral part of our discipleship. We want our kids and our homes to be places of safety and well-being. In addition, most of us want our homes to be a place of growth and vibrancy. But when we wake up in the morning and life is there to greet us with all of its chaos, spiritual growth and vibrancy in our homes seems like something we'll never reach. So how is it that we can bring spiritual growth and vibrancy to our homes when it feels like all we can do to keep our family alive from one day to the next? What is it that makes some homes spiritually vibrant while others seem to never quite move past the chaos? This question is one that we wanted to find an answer to and, as it turns out, so did Don Everts. In this chapter Don gives us an overview of his latest research in partnership with Barna on what makes a home spiritually vibrant. And what they found is good news! Step 5 in creating lifestyle of discipleship is to make other disciples. But this is often the step that causes us the most fear. We're afraid of talking to a stranger about our faith. We don't want to say the wrong thing, or be asked a question we don't know how to answer, or be the one responsible for turning someone off to the gospel all together. And so we avoid spiritual conversations of any kind. But in this chapter Don Everts helps us gain some peace of mind by giving us a better way to think about sharing our faith and making disciples. New research finds that Christians are less involved in spiritual conversations today than we were twenty-five years ago. Don's surprising—and sometimes embarrassing—stories affirm what Scripture and the latest research reveal: spiritual conversations can actually be a delight. Unpacking what God's Word says about spiritual conversations and digging into the habits of eager conversationalists, Everts describes what we can learn from Christians who are still talking about their faith. With original research from the Barna Group and Lutheran Hour Ministries on spiritual conversations in the digital age, this book offers fresh insights and best practices for fruitful everyday conversations. Don Everts is reluctant to call himself an evangelist, but for decades he has found himself talking about Jesus with all sorts of skeptical and curious people. He is a writer for Lutheran Hour Ministries and associate pastor at Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri. He has also been a speaker and trainer for Alpha and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. His many books include Jesus with Dirty Feet, I Once Was Lost, and Breaking the Huddle.
