[Video below] Following a unanimous vote, Jake Lamberth is the Floresville 4A Corp.'s new president. Brian Gray — who stepped up to be the board's secretary during the June 6 meeting — will continue in the role of secretary. The new board members made quick introductions Aug. 15 during their first board meeting together since being appointed June 13 by the Floresville City Council. The new team sat down with attorney Tom Caldwell to discuss the board members' roles and responsibilities. The city council wants the board to be more involved with the event center, according to Assistant City Manager...Article Link

Since the election of a new mayor and two different council members May 4, the Floresville City Council has almost completely replaced the membership of two city boards and one city committee. A 3-2 council vote June 13 approved a new makeup for the Floresville 4A Corp. and the Floresville Planning & Zoning Committee. By replacing three holdovers on the Floresville Economic Development Corp., the same council majority also totally changed the membership of that board; the other members had been replaced at a May 13 meeting. Three board members of the Floresville 4A Corp. were able to take care of some official business at a meeting June 6, despite being unsure of their future on the board. The corporation, which oversees the Floresville Event Center, had not been able to hold a monthly meeting since Jan. 25 for lack of a quorum — due at least in part to a number of resignations. Board member Morgan Mitchell chaired the June 6 meeting, which also was attended by Mary Helen Tieken and Brian Gray, who had been appointed to the board Feb. 8 by the Floresville City...Article Link
Pressing issues surrounding card grading, authentication, and restoration. They debate the merits and ethics of card restoration, highlighting how altered cards are currently processed and perceived by grading companies and collectors alike. The discussion also explores the future of card grading, suggesting technological solutions for tracking a card's history and proposing a more transparent and comprehensive approach to grading altered cards. Throughout, the emphasis is on the importance of honesty and integrity in the hobby, while acknowledging the evolving nature of collecting practices and standards. 00:27 Turning the Tables: A Q&A Session 01:05 The Debate on Card Restoration and Grading 02:31 The Nostalgia and Appeal of Vintage Cards 06:27 The Future of Card Grading and Restoration 09:29 Technological Advancements in Authentication
The ethics of card restoration, the practice of altering cards for grading purposes, and the challenges faced in detecting such modifications. Dr. Beckett presents his views on the widening gap in card prices due to grading and shares his expertise on improving detection methods to maintain the integrity of card collecting. Furthermore, they discuss the industry's approach to restoration and alteration, emphasizing the need for transparency and precise grading criteria to accurately describe a card's condition. They conclude by pondering the future of card grading, with Brian suggesting the adoption of dual grading scales similar to the comic book industry to better represent restored cards. 01:00 Brian's Personal Journey and Insights into the Card Business 02:16 Exploring the Ethics of Card Restoration and Alteration 03:05 Detecting Altered Cards and Industry Solutions 07:18 The Debate on Card Alteration: Perspectives and Proposals 10:18 Reflecting on the Evolution and Future of Card Grading
Exploring the nuanced strategies for unearthing hidden gems within the sports card market. Both speakers employ a type of contrarian approach to collecting, specifically by showing interest in cards that the majority of the market overlooks due to their low cost. They challenge the prevailing market trends that prioritize highly valuable cards, emphasizing how lower-priced cards can hold significant potential for growth. Brian elaborates on this principle by sharing personal anecdotes and examples, such as his investment in non-sports cards and historical figures, to illustrate the overlooked value found in plain sight. The conversation also weaves in broader topics, including the psychology of collecting, the impact of grading on card values, and the crucial role of personal research and experience in making informed buying decisions. Finally, the video touches on the importance of adopting a long-term perspective in collecting and investing, suggesting that a marathon approach, rather than a sprint, is more suited to realizing the true value of sports cards. 01:56 The Contrarian Approach to Collecting 03:13 Spotting Value in Unlikely Places 04:56 The Philosophy of Collecting: Sprint vs. Marathon 10:36 Navigating the Hobby with Experience and Insight
Dr. James Beckett and Brian Gray, formerly of Leaf, delve deep into the concept of corporate culture in the sports card industry, focusing on the persisting influence of company founders even after they've left. They explore how the cultural imprints of iconic figures like Richard McWilliam of Upper Deck continue to shape company values and operations. The duo also reflects on their personal experiences with leadership transitions at Leaf and Beckett, highlighting the complexities of maintaining or diverging from the founder's vision in evolving business environments. The narrative extends to discussing the role of new leadership in rebranding and the challenges of integrating different corporate cultures within conglomerates like Fanatics. Furthermore, they contemplate the future of the industry with the transitions of entities like JSA and the potential strategies for leaders facing change, including Ken Goldin. This episode provides profound insights into how the shadows of founders loom over corporate cultures and the dynamic response of companies in the sports card industry to leadership changes, mergers, and the constant push towards innovation. 00:26 Exploring Corporate Culture and Leadership Transitions 00:46 The Impact of Founders on Company Culture 01:32 The Evolution of Corporate Identity Post-Founder Departure 03:39 Personal Reflections on Leadership and Legacy 05:34 The Future of Authentication and Collectibles 08:06 Advice for Industry Leaders and the Future of Fanatics

The NFL is back and the quarterback market is (as always) hot. But what lessons can be learned in the hobby by the 49ers giving up on Trey Lance and shipping him to Dallas for a 4th round pick? This week the Faith & Work Podcast discusses the importance of making your assumptions at work explicit. Everyone has their own unique working styles, strengths, and quirks that they bring to the workplace. In this episode, we hear from Brian Gray, Denver Institute's VP of Formation and the Director of the 5280 Fellowship, on the topic of transforming team relationships with user guides.
Have you ever had someone stop you because they didn't believe you were? At 6'5", Brian Gray looks like an athlete, but has always been interested in the art of design. As part of the Kansas Jayhawks Basketball program, Brian talks about challenges he's faced and not taking on the burden of others expectations by believing in who you are and what you're capable of. Episode: 00147 Released on February 20, 2023 Description: The law enforcement (analysis) field is ever-changing with new technology advancement, best practices, and theories on criminal behavior, so it is pertinent that agencies prioritize training for their analysts, and for analysts to advocate for themselves when it comes to training. In this episode, Anthony D'Abruzzo (side note: how would you pronounce his last name?) share how he discovered the profession as well as what he does as a training coordinator for the State of New York. Anthony's badge story involves his development of different methods to collect and disseminate gun statistics for his agency and his professional relationship development with other professionals in the field; most notably, Deb Piehl, a prior guest on our show. Anthony and Jason go into multiple topics, including pay disparity amongst analysts across the country such as a Florida position that got a lot of traction on LinkedIn about a month ago. Anthony is currently the Crime Analysis Program Training Coordinator for the New York State (NYS) Division of Criminal Justice Services. CHALLENGE: There are Easter eggs in one of the tables of the Excel chapter that Jason wrote for the IACA textbook.
