Johanna Thede bangade aldrig ett party och festade som folk gör mest. Under en sjukskrivning för utbrändhet ville hon sluta dricka- inte för att hon var alkoholist eller så, utan av hälsoskäl. God's faithfulness to humanity is astounding; filled with love and compassion. This kind of faithfulness is desperately needed in our world today. The word translated as "faithfulness" Galatians 5 contains two key components: trust and obedience. When it comes to our own faithfulness our trust often fades before obedience takes root; but, this is where God intervenes. For, what we cannot do on our own, the Spirit of God works within us. This kind of faithfulness is the Sprit-grown endurance to keep trusting God enough to follow in obedience.

We live in a fallen evil world. Because of sin, the natural drift of the current of this world is downward. If we're honest, the darkness and evil isn't just out there; we feel it in us from time to time too.  The natural response is to resort to our own resources and efforts to make it — work harder, go to more therapy, be nicer, change schools or find new friends. All of these things may be appropriate, but without the wind of the Spirit it just leads to futility and exhaustion.  We need to be filled with the Sprit.  We need to be intoxicated Christians.

What if the very trial you’re begging God to take away is the very trial He’s using to build greater character and hope in your spiritual walk? That’s actually what the Bible teaches—“we glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;  and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Rom. 5:3-4). In God’s hands, tribulation is never wasted; it’s His workshop of “hope [that] does not disappoint” (v. 5a). How is this so? “because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit . . .” (v. 5b). So let’s learn how to glory in our tribulations—because they’re designed, through God’s love and His enabling Sprit, to produce hope. This is a joint Sauna Talk podcast with Linda and Otto who also run the Sprit of Sauna podcast from Finland as well as Sipoonjoki Heritage Sauna, just outside Helsinki, Finland. Linda and Otto are business partners who share a common interest in preserving the cultural roots and history of smoke sauna, promoting the rituals and power behind, and help create a place and platform for education and retreats at their sauna facility in nature, just outside Helsinki, Finland. Sauna Talk: Sipoonjoki heritage sauna Sipoonjoki's heritage sauna offers a unique experience in a country sauna, where bathing leaves you feeling especially cleansed and refreshed. www.saunotus.fi I'd call Sipoonjoki a “smoke sauna haven.” For guests traveling to Finland or within Finland, the top features include: – their flagship smoke sauna, built traditionally, within the hill mound with stone walls. – saunotus ceremonies and treatments – using plants and herbs, growing on sight and in the shadows nearby. – education and retreats. The day of my visit, as I was departing after my session, a half dozen Finnish ladies were arriving for their private smoke sauna ritual. That's the beauty of smoke sauna – and maybe I should describe smoke sauna for listeners who may not be familiar. Journey to Sipoonjoki Heritage Sauna Otto offers to come pick me up in downtown Helsinki. But learning about he and Linda's busy schedule (as owners, operators, parents to each having their own children, etc.) I will have none of it. I love taking public transport in Europe, and Finland is no exception. I take the metro to the central train station and with train stop on my phone. It doesn't take me long to find a younger, sharper, more localized Helsinki -ite at the station to direct me to platform 7. From there, I board the commuter train. From there, I confirm that once the train pushes off, i'm the third stop north of town. I disembark, and there's Otto waiting for me with a big smile, standing in front of the photo wrapped passenger van. Hugs and hello, and off we go to Sipoonjoki. The drive is just long enough for us to help orient myself to where we are. And we find the common english word, The tool we're thinking of is called a compass (or drafting compass). You remember from elementary school. It has one pointed leg and one leg that holds a pencil or lead, allowing you to draw precise circles or arcs. It's commonly used in geometry, drafting, woodworking, and metalworking. Well, this is part of the magic of Linda and Otto's sauna retreat center. The compass point being Helsinki central, and within the drawn circle is Sipoonkorpi National Park. We are heading for smoke sauna. As Nature is such a critically wonderful component to good sauna. And, here we are, as if transformed to hundreds of kilometers away, yet just close to Helsinki. I ask: for visitors, car is the best option. But if a tourist were visiting without, what is the best way to get close to you, is it the train that I took, or the bus? “There is a bus stop relatively close and during summer weekends there is a bus that comes directly to the sauna.” Gotta love Finland. Beyond the obvious My latest Europe trip – 40 saunas in 12 days carried with it a general theme: beyond the obvious. For example, all sauna tourists will hit Löyly in Helsinki, yet few venture on the path less taken to Sipoonjoki. And stepping out of the van with Otto and meeting Linda, on this end of May early afternoon, I'm met with the sound of birds and soft breeze blowing through the tall spruce trees, take sight of the grounds and smoke sauna awaiting me, and i'm filled with joy and calm for what exists beyond the obvious. We settle into one of their outbuildings, get mic'ed up, and off we go. Hon får napp hos en lite äldre kille. De byter nummer och börjar skriva till varandra. ”Det är en intensiv kontakt, en kontakt som är väldigt fokuserad på sprit, det erbjuds alkohol om hon vill komma hem till honom”, säger förhörsledaren Petra Johansson vid Skånepolisen. Flickan, är placerad på ett HVB-hem i trakten bland annat för sina missbruksproblem. Hon har ingen aning vem ”killen” är eller hans bakgrund. Att han egentligen är 37 år, och inte 28 som han säger till henne. Och att han är dömd för en lång rad sexbrott och känd för allmänheten som Nytorgsmannen. Den 19 juni 2025 dömdes Nytorgsmannen, eller Fredrik Lundgren som han heter idag, till 5 års fängelse för våldtäkt och en lång rad sexuella ofredanden mot sitt nekande. This was our final Q&A session wrapping up Grace's lecture series on the Holy Spirit (you can get here), and what a fantastic conversation it turned out to be! Grace shared how spending time with pneumatology has shifted her focus toward the practical, embodied aspects of faith - moving beyond the academic exercises of graduate school toward understanding how the Spirit calls us to live sustainably and care for all of creation. We dove deep into how dualistic thinking has harmed both our relationship with the earth and our understanding of ourselves as whole beings - body and spirit together. Grace beautifully connected this to everything from climate justice to prayer practices, showing how recognizing the Spirit's presence in all aspects of life breaks down those false sacred-secular divisions. Revelation Dates: February 1831 Revelation Place: Kirtland, Ohio Section 41 - Historical Background: Arriving in Kirtland Ohio, Joseph found many of the saints practicing “strange notions” brought with the new converts from their previous church backgrounds. As these false precepts and traditions were creeping in among the church, Joseph asked the Lord what to do. Recap: Blessed are they who follow God's commandments and cursed are those who don't. The Elders are to gather together and God will declare His law clarifying His will. Joseph is to receive housing and Edward Partridge is to be ordained a Bishop, the first bishop of the church, to administer full time the temporal affairs of the church.  Section 42 - Historical Background: The early members pooled their property in an attempt to mimic “all things in common” as described in Acts, also known as Christian Communism. This counterfeit to God's Law of Consecration became so contentious that Joseph approached the Lord to seek the true meaning of “all things in common.” This section became known as “The Law” and was one of the first revelations to be published.  Recap: The strength of God's church is in the obedience of its members. The first priority of the Elders is to do missionary work, two by two, as ordained by authority and then guided by the Sprit. Living the ten commandments is emphasized. The Law of Consecration is explained. Other laws of God are discussed, such as the law of work, healing, government, morality and judgement.  Section 43 - Historical Background: Shortly after Joseph arrives in Kirtland, a woman by the name of Hubble announced herself as a prophetess who impresses some of the Elders, including Sidney Rigdon. Joseph declares her an imposter but some remained impressed by her. Joseph approached the Lord concerning the discord.  Recap: The Lord reminds the church there is none other authorized to transmit the will of the Lord than Joseph until the Lord announces a successor. The Elders are to be obedient, teach and edify one another so they may be sent forth to preach in righteousness.  Section 44 - Historical Background: The church was rapidly growing and the Lord knew that great opposition was also rapidly growing. It was revealed to Joseph to prepare the saints for the upcoming crisis by assembling all the Elders in a conference for strength and instruction.          Recap: The Elders must be gathered from all areas to hold a June conference in Kirtland, where the Lord promises to pour out His spirit. Missionary work must be accelerated and many will be converted. These must be organized according to the laws of the land. Care must be given to those who are poor and needy.
