Glacial geologist Jamey Stutz dates Antarctic rocks 'dropped like breadcrumbs from melting glaciers' to help determine the scale of glacial retreat. Jamey has recently joined the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center in Ohio as a research scientist in the Polar Rock Repository, having completed his Ph.D at the Antarctic Research Center at Victoria University in Wellington. Jamey says he's excited to be part of the more than 60 year exchange of Antarctic knowledge between New Zealand and America.

Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 2 of Creeks to Peaks: The Understory. In part 1 of another 2-part interview, we introduce you to Lonnie and Ellen Thompson who are world-renowned glaciologists, climatologists, explorers, and West Virginians. The Thompsons have not only been celebrated the world-over for their polar expeditions and research in places like Antarctica, Tibet, and Mt. Kilimanjaro, but they've also been married to each other for just over 51 years, which in itself is no small feat. Still serving as professors at Ohio State University's Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, the Thompsons' studies have been influential in helping us understand global warming and climate change since the 1970s. Their combined awards and accolades include: the National Medal of Science, the Seligman Crystal, the Benjamin Franklin Medal, The Commonwealth Prize for Science and Innovation, and the Distinguished Explorer Award of the Roy Chapman Andrews Society. As always, take a listen!
It's that time of year again. Dr. Aaron Wilson, Research Scientist with the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, joins us to talk current weather conditions and reveal what forecasts are saying for this spring. We discuss how the fall and winter weather stack up historically and just how much the spring weather is resembling […]
For over 40 years, distinguished university professor and senior research scientist, Lonnie Thompson, has been collecting ice to analyze the effects of climate change. He's led 64 expeditions conducting ice core drilling programs in 16 countries. Lonnie shares how he first became interested in studying ice, and how his early failure led to the development of the first solar-powered drilling equipment launching a whole new area of research. The results of these studies have been published in more than 260 articles. The history of the earth's climate is recorded in glaciers around the world, sums up what is happening in the environment, and allows us the opportunity to respond to what we are seeing. By studying the data in the ice core, we are able to understand data through the course of time, long before humans were around to record it. This intriguing interview will leave you rethinking what you thought you knew about ice! Docu-Short: The Rising Cost of Climate Change Icy Warning from the World's Highest Mountain Lonnie Thompson

In light of climate-induced risks and uncertainties like increasing extreme rainfall events and warmer temperatures, a team made up of research, extension, and outreach professionals at Ohio State are working together to identify how to promote sustainability and resilience in the Eastern Corn Belt. They are also trying to understand how farmers' can adapt to these changing conditions while supporting both agricultural production and the protection of our critical ecosystem. Learn more about the study on this Our Ohio Weekly. 00:00 - Dr. Robyn Wilson, Professor of Risk Analysis and Decision Science at Ohio State's School of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Aaron Wilson, Research Scientist at Ohio State's Byrd Polar & Climate Research Center and Dr. Mary Doidge, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at McGill University in Montreal discuss their project that focuses on the past and expected future climate conditions, and how farmers plan to adapt. 23:50 - After a series of life changing events while serving as a U.S. soldier, Matt Schaar took his determination and fortitude from the battlefield to the farm fields. Hear his story "To the Beat of Agriculture". 32:20 - Ohio has a new budget for Fiscal Years 2022-2023. The $74 billion budget checks many of Ohio Farm Bureau's priority issue boxes. To talk more about the wins for Farm Bureau and Ohio Agriculture as a whole in Ohio's budget is Brandon Kern, Ohio Farm Bureau's senior director of state and national policy and Jenna Reese, the organization's director of state policy. 42:20 - American Farm Bureau just released their Summer Cookout Survey to get a gauge on popular Independence Day food prices. AFBF Economist Veronica Nigh has the details.

Terry Wilson is a pioneer in using global positioning systems (GPS) to understand the loss of Antarctic ice. She says Antarctica's bedrock is rising as the ice melts and this will have implications for rising sea levels and our ability to manage their effect over time. Terry Wilson is a professor emerita in the School of Earth Sciences and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at the Ohio State University. This week she delivered the S.T. Lee Lecture in Antarctic Studies at the Victoria University Antarctic Research Centre.
