And what's with all this talk about snow in the Tampa Bay area this weekend. We turn to someone who knows. Finally, Tampa will soon shine on the global stage as native sled hockey player Declan Farmer heads to Milan with his sights set on a fourth Winter Paralympics gold medal.
In this episode the gang talks about the PAGE convention, the subtle effects of designing mechanics, and have our spirits lifted by some really kind letters from the listeners! This month's adventure is G2, which, admittedly we have sort of covered a bit before, but here we give it the full "This Ol' Dungeon" treatment. And ONCE AGAIN we get to try out the new version of our Geek Credit segment, with some really good/tough questions from our listeners. You too can write into the show at thisoldungeon@gmail.com or you can send us some multiple choice questions (with the answer marked) to thisoldungeonquiz@gmail.com. If we use your quiz question on the episode you will be put in a drawing for some swell RPG prizes!
I only know one person who can claim >60 years of federal service. This episode's guest, Mike Spoor. Mike spent those years with the US Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District (in West Virginia on the banks of the Ohio River) and even more years before that as a contractor to the Kansas City District. But Mike did not just log federal service. He focused curiosity and insight with a relentless field program to convert those years into insight. Mike's decades of stories on the Ohio River and it's tributaries, and the impact of disturbances old (glaciers) and new (coal mining) is exactly the sort of conversations I had in mind when I launched this project. I don't think we got to 10% of Mike's stories, but somehow managed to cover an impressive range of river processes and projects, and some real insight on how he approaches rivers. I talked to Mike about the history of the Ohio River, the flood of record, and untangling the role of glacial-legacy soils on bank failure processes...and how a careful, causal understanding of these processes helped him identify the most cost-effective approach to mittigate them. We also talked about the impact of coal mining on rivers and reservoirs and the island erosion and restoration work that led to his Golden Eagle award. It was a fun and informative conversation and I'm thrilled to share it.(The interlude music in this episode is Dusty Horizons by Score Wizzard and HEC did the editing on this one). This series was funded by the Regional Sediment Management (RSM) program.Mike Loretto edited the first three seasons and created the theme music.Tessa Hall is editing most of Season 4.Stanford Gibson (HEC Sediment Specialist) hosts.Video shorts and other bonus content are available at the podcast website:https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rastraining/latest/the-rsm-river-mechanics-podcast...but most of the supplementary videos are available on the HEC Sediment YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordgibsonIf you have guest recommendations or feedback you can reach out to me on LinkedIn or ResearchGate or fill out this recommendation and feedback form: https://forms.gle/wWJLVSEYe7S8Cd248

We welcome in the new year with a full house today, Slushies, as we discuss two poems from Cal Freeman. The first poem's title glacier reminds Kathy of this year's epic snowfall in Juneau, Alaska (though it's forty inches, not forty feet, of snow). All that snow reminds Lisa of Boston's Vile Pile of snow that would not melt until July. Kathy deftly segues that memory back to our own slush pile. We admire Freeman's use of sonics in “Glacial Erratics” and the poem's subtle gestures towards relationship strife. We all agree we're stealing the poet's apt description of “overwrought craft beer.” Since the second poem, “A White Bird,” is a classic Italian or Petrarchan sonnet, the discussion of iambic pentameter that ensues might be helpful to any teachers in the listening audience (as well as KVM's brother, Dave). Have a listen as we nerd out on meter. All the sonnet particulars lead Marion to admit what it is that gives her a secret intellectual boner. We end with lots of fodder for your TBR pile. Listen through the end of the episode for everyone's recommended reads, linked below. As always, thanks for listening! Instagram @johnfreeman5984 Photo credit: Shdia Amen Glacial Erratics I'm walking the rocks of mid-coast Maine and thinking about leaving, haze rolling in off Penobscot Bay nearly enveloping, but I can see my hands, swollen, red, silver ring in folds of skin. It's been five days of lobster, haddock, and overwrought craft beer. Sarah's in a nimbus on a bluff. I can't see her. These tidal patterns strand sponges and shellac seaweed to the stones. The tide's waning now, an hour past its peak. We arrived five days ago in a Tecnam T2012, in a two-prop puddle hopper. You get in the way you get out. I'm scared Cape Air will strand us in this fog. I don't want another day. You get in the way you get out unless you don't. An alabaster boulder rests at the foot of the bluff, a glacial erratic only special because of its geographical and visual context. Glacial errata, I thought I heard our tourist captain say, though Sarah corrected me. A glacial erratic's when the ice deposits stone of another realm to punctuate a scene in a distant future epoch– Sarah perched on a gunwale with a lighthouse at her back, the centenarian Cape Cod schooner they call the Olad meandering Penobscot Bay on a quiet afternoon in summer, and how I loved the way those seals on the Nautilus Island rock appeared to sweat (she said the song for our third decade should be “Me and You on the Rock”), their bellies gold as riesling in the sun. Their kind of torpor rests on the precipice of bathos and delight, their porcine bodies commas, long pauses between dips. At intervals they swim like dogs, like dogs they also growl, yet they dive with a gymnast's grace into the depths. A White Bird A rustic cottage on a kettle lake, shells of zebra mussels on the boat lift, a couple loons, a lone white bird adrift on combers in a pontoon boat's slow wake. Their time is short, they get what they can take. He reads a short story she wrote to sift for common nouns and proper nouns to lift for a poem. He settles on the drake and hen that dove their lithe bodies below and resurfaced a hundred yards away. Such secret lives of love, such dull regret. In the story, she says he cannot know what kind of bird they saw floating that day, as he insists it was the rare egret.

The historiographical studies developed by Ruth Rodríguez Sotomayor, agraduate librarian of the University of Guayaquil, researcher at the HistoricalArchive of Guayas, and lecturer, are extraordinary. Her studies go beyond the limits of traditional historiography, or rather, they transcend the boundaries of the orthodox history, as Ruth Rodríguez Sotomayor rescues and exposes, through the study of symbols, the arts, sciences, and philology, of an almost unknown past of the Americas. And to speak of the Americas is to speak of the continent of civilizing godswhose traces are today silent vestiges of the original Golden Age.Certainly, Rodríguez Sotomayor's work opposes the aforementionedorthodox or “official” version, and thus, consequently, becomes a revolutionaryproposal. One of the most important fields of her studies is the prefiguration of theorigin of mankind in South America and the spread of its civilization to othercontinents. They are therefore connected to the essential works of distinguishedresearchers such as the multidisciplinary Francisco P. Moreno, the philologist andethnologist Emeterio Villamil de Rada, and the archaeologist Roberto Rengifo, since Rodríguez Sotomayor recognizes in America –or Pre-America as she aptlysheds light on it, that is, the America before the known America– as the nucleusfrom which the civilizing group emerged, migrating, projecting, and settling indifferent centers of the globe, expanding its civilization.Rafael Videla Eissmann (Chile, 1979) is a historian graduated from UniversidadCatólica de Chile. Our name, is the TV/Movie Rewind Podcast. As night falls on Matt & Todd, they find themselves drawn into the gothic madness of Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows is a show born from the literal dream of Dan Curtis in 1966, fleshed out by writer Art Wallace, and brought to moody life by directors Lela Swift, John Sedwick, and Henry Kaplan.Set designer Sy Thomasoff, composer Robert Cobert, and writers Sam Hall and Ron Sproat helped build what would, by 1968, become a cultural phenomenon—an unlikely soap that reshaped supernatural storytelling for generations, airing on June 27, 1966 on ABC until April 2, 1971.For horror fans today, Dark Shadows is a cornerstone. It carved a path for everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel to True Blood and Anne Rice, maybe this. What begins as a tale of mysterious genetics and brooding intrigue spirals quickly into the story of a tortured vampire thrust into increasingly deranged predicaments. We're talking soap opera insanity: At one point remorseful vampire astral-projects through time to defeat the mute ghost of a warlock… but instead helps him (with help from another warlock…) fight a phoenix that said warlock (the future-ghost one) accidentally created… this runs afoul of the plans of the witch (who created the vampire). That's before fancy-knifed assassins, magic severed hands, a werewolf curse, yet another even more powerful warlock show up, and 400 more episodes before the narrative ends abruptly. It's homage. It's theft. It's divine melodrama. And it's also… 1,225 episodes. Not every one is a masterpiece. Pacing? Glacial. Takes? Singular. Flubs? Frequent. Stone walls? Rattling. Bats? Unapologetically rubber. No blood, the violence is rather tame, but if you can get ‘into it' there is so much fun to be had here.As essential to genre history as Dracula, Star Wars, or Star Trek, Dark Shadows is a wild, shadowy ride. This is best enjoyed with someone who's ready to lean into the madness.Dark Shadows stars (for the most part):Alexandra Moltke (Isles) as Victoria WintersJonathan Frid as Barnabas CollinsDavid Selby as Quentin CollinsLara Parker as Angelique BouchardJoan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins-StoddardLouis Edmonds as Roger CollinsNancy Barrett as Carolyn Collins-StoddardDavid Henesy as David CollinsKathryn Leigh Scott as Maggie EvansJohn Karlen as Willy LoomisThayer David as … we'll go with “Stokes”Grayson Hall as Julia HoffmanJoel Crothers as poor, poor Joe HaskellDark Shadows is a Dan Curtis Production.Find and reach out to Matt on: Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialLetterboxdFacebook: Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow:Once Upon a Geek and The Fade Out Podcast
In episode 2 of Season 4, we consider how the science of climate change has become one of the key issues defining the evangelical mindset. We speak with Jon Peerbolt, an international aid worker for the NGO Novi who was raised among onion farmers in Michigan by parents who were deeply entrenched in the conservative Christian ecosystem. We also interview Dr. Ryan Juskus, assistant professor and faculty director at Notre Dames' Institute for Social Concerns who walks us through the historical roots of environmentalism within the evangelical movement. Finally, we talk with Dr. Paul Thagard, distinguished professor of philosophy emeritus at the University of Waterloo, who spent his career working in the cognitive sciences, explaining why the human mind is so susceptible to misinformation. Brent Minchew is Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Chief Scientist at Arête Glacier Initiative, a new nonprofit launched to close the gap between frontier glaciology research and actionable sea-level forecasts—and to probe whether “brake-tapping” inside Antarctic glaciers can slow their slide into the sea. Brent explains why current models still span 1–6 feet of rise by 2100—even if Paris targets are met—and how melting glaciers, especially Antarctica's so-called “Doomsday Glacier,” drive that uncertainty. He details why glaciology remains drastically underfunded, how sea-level changes already threaten coastal economies via insurance markets, and where Arête's first $5 million in philanthropic capital is going. He also walks through early-stage solutions—from thermo-siphons that passively refreeze ice to pumping sub-glacial water—that could “hit the brakes” on glacier flow and buy humanity time for deep decarbonization. In this episode, we cover: [03:45] Launching Arête to bridge glacier science and solutions[05:38] Inside the “doomsday glacier” and its global risk[07:18] Why Thwaites may collapse even if we hit climate goals[09:51] Sea level rise: Millions displaced per inch[12:41] The silent crisis of glacial melt[13:28] Economic ripple effects of rising seas[15:53] What Larsen B's collapse taught us[20:04] Arête's model: Philanthropy + global research[22:51] Advancing glacier tech through TRL stages[25:45] How Antarctica is governed[35:28] Refreezing glaciers with thermo-siphons[45:00] Drilling costs vs. seawalls: Where's the value?Episode recorded on May 14, 2025 (Published on June 2, 2025) Enjoyed this episode? Welcome to the first episode in a series called “The Failures of Old Earth Creationism.” Many Christians attempt to fit old earth ideology into their beliefs, adopting uniformitarian or evolutionary pieces into their worldview. While this is often done in an effort to appeal to science, it often leads to major issues logically, scientifically, and theologically. Today we’ll look at what is considered by many to be a strong argument for an old Earth: ice cores. Ice cores, cylindrical cores drilled from the thick ice sheets, are often presented as indisputable evidence of hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of years of Earth’s history, but how reliable are these claims? What assumptions lie beneath the surface of these interpretations? In this episode, we’ll discuss: what ice cores are and why they’re significant, the assumptions and flaws in Old Earth interpretations, and how ice cores ultimately align with a young Earth model. Join host Trey Bowling and Dr. Jake Hebert as they discuss this topic on episode 93 of The Creation Podcast. References: The debate mentioned in this podcast

SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 30The Astronomy, Space and Science News PodcastEarth's Jessica Cycles, Starship's Latest Failure, and Lunar Landings in TroubleIn this episode of SpaceTime, we explore a groundbreaking discovery linking Earth's ice age cycles to its orbital shifts. Recent research indicates a predictable pattern for glacial and interglacial periods, suggesting the onset of the next ice age could occur in approximately 10,000 years. This insight stems from a million-year climate record that matches changes in Earth's orbit with significant climate shifts.Starship's Crash and BurnWe also discuss the latest mishap involving SpaceX's Starship, which experienced a dramatic failure just seconds before achieving orbit. The test flight ended in a spectacular explosion over the Caribbean, prompting multiple investigations into the incident. This marks the second consecutive failure for SpaceX's ambitious rocket program, raising concerns about its future, particularly in relation to NASA's Artemis lunar missions.New Developments on the MoonAdditionally, we report on the recent successful landing of Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander on the lunar surface, marking a milestone in commercial lunar exploration. However, not all lunar missions are faring well, as Intuitive Machines' IM2 lander appears to have landed on its side, echoing past failures. Meanwhile, NASA's Lunar Trailblazer has lost communication, raising further concerns about its operational status.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 30 for broadcast on 10 March 202500:49 Linking Earth's ice age cycles to orbital shifts06:30 Predicting the next ice age12:15 Overview of SpaceX's Starship crash18:00 Implications for NASA's Artemis program22:45 Successful landing of Blue Ghost on the Moon27:00 Challenges faced by IM2 and Lunar Trailblazer missions30:15 Study on vaping and smoking cessationwww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com
The gender pay gap continues to narrow - but slowly, with women on average earning 78 cents for every dollar a man makes. “We're ceding ground to China, which has become everyone's favorite punching bag. Whether Democrat or Republican, both sides are beating up on China. Meanwhile, China is saying, ‘Okay, we'll make all your solar panels, electric and autonomous vehicles,' because they see the financial opportunities. It's past time for the U.S. and our politicians to step out of their corners and come together – this is the greatest crisis we will ever face.” Chelsea Henderson on Electric Ladies Podcast Political polarization may have stifled discussions on the climate, but Mother Nature doesn't ask what party you're in before wiping out your community with a hurricane, tornado or wildfire. In addition, 80% of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding has gone to Republican districts – which also happen to have some of the highest potential for economic development through clean energy. At least 18 House Republicans even urged Speaker Mike Johnson not to cut clean energy tax credits in their districts because of the economic growth spurred by these investments. What does the conservative answer to climate change look like? Listen to Chelsea Henderson, Director of Editorial Content at RepublicEn, a non-profit organization that provides a safe space for conservatives to have open discussions about climate change and related solutions. She also has extensive experience on Capitol Hill working for Republican senators, as well as the National Wildlife Federation and The Nature Conservancy, and wrote the extraordinary best-selling book “Glacial: The inside story of climate politics.” You'll hear about: Bridging the partisan divide on climate policy. The economic opportunities and benefits of investing in clean energy and climate resilience in Republican-led states. The longstanding history of GOP presidents and candidates who have championed climate action – and the need for courageous lawmakers who do so today. How climate-related disasters and personal experiences spur engagement on climate issues, regardless of political affiliation. The role of effective messaging and messengers in engaging the conservative community on climate change. Plus, valuable career advice, especially for considering a career pivot. "Playing into your interests and strengths is important. It's become a bit of a cliché to say, ‘Do what you love, and everything will fall into place,' because it's not that easy. I try not to say no to opportunities. Instead, I try to say yes more and engage with other women, because women are incredible at supporting one another. Leaning into that support system – hearing about the pitfalls, the challenges, what was hard, what was easy – is invaluable. “For me, writing Glacial was a turning point. I've always loved writing, and that's how I transitioned from being a lobbyist to more of a messenger. I thought, ‘I know a lot about climate change, and I'm a good writer. How can I build a career around that?' That mindset helped shape my path.” Chelsea Henderson on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here.
