Adam Kissel, Madison Marino Doan, and Rachel Alexander Cambre guide us through their process of collaboration and their argument that Ivy League institutions are not providing students with a quality education. Through the saturation of DEI-coded or hyper-specialized courses, they argue, students lack access to classical education and Western civilization–based instruction that would better serve their intellectual development. The authors discuss their approach to building the argument, the origins of their idea, and what students should keep in mind when selecting their schools and course lists. Kogel Bearings was established in 2013 in a 5x10 foot storage unit in Ard Kessels' adopted hometown of El Paso, TX.  The goals were clear from the beginning: Make the high end bearings that fit a premium bike. Develop specific seals for road and off road use, since they have different requirements. Design a line of bottom brackets that will eliminate the use of adapters. As a bike shop owner in Belgium, Ard had one big frustration: sending expensive bicycles out with the stock bearings that came with the frames or complete bikes. We all understand that ball bearings are at the bottom of every spec sheet when product managers assemble bikes for the catalog and new model year, so it's almost a given that they are the cheapest available. These Low-quality steel products tend to not gel well with the Belgian climate, where riding on wet roads is a given. Following the motto "Just because it fits, doesn't make it right" has sent Kogel on a mission to develop a native solution for (almost) every combination of crank and frame. Today, we are still fighting that battle. It seems that frame manufacturers have not grown tired of reinventing a hole in a frame.

On April 24, US President Joe Biden signed into law a national security spending package that included substantial changes to the administration's authorities to impose sanctions and to investigate violations. One of the big-ticket items for shipping is the Stop Harbouring Iranian Petroleum Act, AKA the Ship Act, which instructs the president to impose sanctions on foreign ports, refineries, vessels and shipping companies that knowingly process or carry Iranian oil and products, expanding sanctions risk for maritime supply chain actors. The broader legislation also included provision expanding sanctions threat to Chinese financial institutions that process “significant financial transactions” involving Iranian oil or drones, and extended the statute of limitations for sanctions of violations from five to 10 years. However, whether these any measures will have an impact will hinge to a large extent — surprise — on enforcement. In this week's podcast, our guests Brian Maloney, partner in Seward & Kissel's litigation and investigation group, and Claire Jungman, chief of staff at advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran, will walk through the nuances of the new bill, how it fits in with the existing alphabet soup of US sanctions authorities, and how it could impact maritime supply chains, especially in China, to where most of Iran's oil is exported.

The test results are in, and America's children are failing history and civics.According to the “Nation's Report Card,” just 13% of eighth graders are proficient in U.S. history, and only 22% are proficient in civics.Every four years, the National Assessment of Educational Progress captures how well America's students are performing in major subjects. The latest scores, released this week, are “the lowest numbers ever recorded for the NAEP scores in civics and in history over the past 25 years,” says Adam Kissel, a visiting fellow in higher education reform at The Heritage Foundation.Kissel says there is no doubt that school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in the learning loss. As for the drop in proficiency in history and civics, he says, "I would guess that after the Black Lives Matter movement got popular in 2020, a lot of teachers changed their curriculum around and taught less of the basics and more activism-type topics, and that might have been a factor as well.”In response to the troublingly low test scores, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona issued a written statement.“We need to provide every student with rich opportunities to learn about America's history and understand the U.S. Constitution and how our system of government works,” Cardona said.He added: “Banning history books and censoring educators from teaching these important subjects does our students a disservice and will move America in the wrong direction.”“He's wrong on both of those points,” Kissel says of President Joe Biden's education secretary. “His solution is really the opposite of what schools need to do.” Kissel joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why America's kids are floundering in history and civics classes, and to offer practical solutions to repair America's failing education system.Enjoy the show!
