Did you know that the median retail investor spends only six minutes researching a stock before buying it? Most of that time is spent staring at a price chart—often just the current day's movement. Nick compares the limited “research” many individual investors conduct to the extensive analysis performed by Henssler's research analysts.K.C. then takes a closer look at the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that passed the House of Representatives just hours before we recorded. We discuss the revised State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, the increased Child Tax Credit, and the proposed tax break on tip income. While the bill's fate in the Senate remains uncertain, it appears that many of Trump's 2017 tax cuts may be extended.Last Friday, after the market closed, Moody's became the third major credit rating agency to downgrade the U.S. government's debt rating. The cut comes at a time when global confidence in U.S. debt is wavering, and Congress is debating a tax bill that could further increase the national debt. We examine what this downgrade means and whether it reflects actual investment risk. After the break, D.J. breaks down Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and explains why they're one of the most powerful tools for saving money—thanks to their unique triple tax benefit. While many people use HSAs to pay for health-care expenses as they arise, there are compelling advantages to covering those costs from other funds and allowing the HSA to accumulate, benefiting from tax-deferred growth over time.Join hosts Nick Antonucci, CVA, CEPA, Director of Research, and Managing Associates K.C. A while back we were fortunate enough to spend time with Jack Freund, coauthor and thought leader responsible for bring the FAIR methodology and practice into the main stream. A bonus from that original recording is now an espresso shot discussing how to fast track an assessment when the threat vectors are numerous. While the metaphor Jack used is somewhat unexpected it's both memorable and an excellent approach to dealing with an entire class of attacks in a single assessment. A pro tip from one of the original practitioners of the FAIR methodology well worth a listen.
ActionSA caucus leader, Athol Trollip, says the party will not support the African National Congress if their input continues not to yield fruit. Speaking to members of the media, earlier today, Trollip emphasised that the party is resolute in its resistance of a VAT increase or tax bracket creep in the 2025 budget. This after the National Assembly's adoption of the Fiscal Framework yesterday. The was adopted with recommendations - made by ActionSA - that Treasury must be given 30 days to come up with alternatives to tax hikes. Trollip says ANC can not make unilateral decisions, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to EFF Spokesperson, Sinawo Tambo and Analyst at the Centre for Risk Analysis, Carika Middelberg.

Relations between Pretoria and Washington have been under stress since Donald Trump entered the White House 2 months ago and indications are they could turn for the worse. On 7 February 2025, President Trump issued an Executive Order specifically aimed at South Africa's domestic and international policies. The decision by the US government to declare South Africa's former ambassador Ebrahim Rasool persona non grata and expel him was the latest spat in a relationship that has become more abrasive. Trump's nomination of Brent Bozell III, a conservative media commentator, as the new US ambassador to South Africa and the City of Johannesburg's push to rename Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive are set to take relations on a rougher ride. President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously slammed the visit by Afrikaner community lobby groups Afriforum and Solidarity to Washington for raising tensions with the Trump administration. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Chris Hattingh, Executive Director of the Centre for Risk Analysis who has returned from Washington DC where he was accessing the temperature of US/SA relations

There are many top-down tools that attempt to model climate-related credit risks, but risks relating to the transition towards a low carbon economy often stem from complex regulation and hotly debated policy that are not easily captured in simplistic models. In this episode of Fixed on ESG, we focus on the EU autos sector as a means of exploring how we leverage our bottom-up research approach to analyse climate risks. We discuss the tightening of EU automobile manufacturer emissions targets, limitations of current climate value-at-risk (Climate VaR) models, and the research process we employ to integrate climate transition risks into our credit analysis. PGIM Fixed Income's Alistair Shepheard-Walwyn, CFA, ESG Specialist, hosts this discussion with Chris Roberts, European Investment Grade Credit Research Analyst. Recorded on November 26, 2024.

The U.S. agricultural sector is facing a challenging transition. Following a period of record profitability in 2021 and 2022, the latest USDA 2024 Farm Sector Income Forecast released in September of 2024, projects a continuing decline in farm income. According to Amitabh Bhargava, a seasoned expert in credit risk and portfolio risk management, farm incomes dropped nearly 29% in 2023 and are expected to fall another 9-10% in 2024. This decline represents a slowing of the income reduction but signals continued financial stress for farmers across the nation.
