As a kid in the arcade, I found Sega's 1983 title CONGO BONGO...interesting. So, of course, when I got hold of a copy of the game for the 5200, I had to try it. And now in episode 319, I have. That's a thing I've done. What did I think? Well, you'll have to listen and find out. It's been a couple of months since we recorded this and we all have gone through an adventure or two. But finally, here it is! Episode 14: Dogfight! The gang reviews two of the lowest rated games for the system, Congo Bongo and Quest for Quintana Roo. And just a heads up, Pete owns this episode, and it's great! Of course, we have the usual amount of jackassery that comes standard with each episode. Mystery! Adventure! Horrible Collision Detection! It's all here in the Atari 5200 Podcast!
This week the friends recount their trip to Mexico! Their pilot, screenwriter/actor Justin Theroux navigated the friendly skies to their Congo Bongo destination in Playa Del Carmen. Tequila shots, pharmacy runs, and John lifeguarding Carolina and Anna at the beach is only PART 1 of this totally not sober expedition.
In this episode we brave the jungle and discuss Sega's 1983 classic, Congo Bongo. We talk about arcade shows, restoration tools and how many times certain titles have passed through our collections. All this and our gameroom updates. Enjoy!
Sega enters 1985 with the hottest game of 1982, and the good news is that Zaxxon looks and plays far more convincingly than its sibling release Congo Bongo did back in 1983. This adaptation of the arcade hit makes some curious tweaks to the game's flow and design, and it adds a bit of background music, which sets it apart from other conversions of the game. But in a good way, mostly. Champion Pro Wrestling fares less impressively, especially in hindsight. Apparently we have Sega to blame for how Tag Team Wrestling turned out on NES, with the sluggishness and the menus and the whatnot. Stupid Champion Pro Wrestling. All about the (bad) movie Congo.
In 1983, Sega said, "We took a shot at creating a 3-D looking game for the arcade. Congo Bongo looks amazing." "We took a shot," some staffer said. "But it really doesn't look that great." "We should now adapt that for the home console," the powers-that-be said. "It will look even better." "It will look even worse," the staffer said and was summarily fired. Okay, that's not exactly how it happened, but it might as well have. Well, if Gilligan can spend all those years lovin' on his coconuts. We can spend one episode. This week's short story is: "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts...But is That All There is to Life?" Con-Go? Bon-Go! Welcome to episode 148, where I discuss the Sega game and horrible fiery recurring death of Congo Bongo! Poor Congo Bongo, he never had a chance. Next up is Wall Ball by Avalon Hill, which is pretty rare. If you have any feedback on this game, why not send it to me at 2600gamebygame@gmail.com? You'll be glad you did! Happy New Year! Today's episode is about Popeye by Parker Brothers, based on the Nintendo arcade game, which in turn is based on the Popeye cartoons, which in turn again is based on the original comic strip which didn't originally feature Popeye (I know, right?!). Lots of great feedback, thank you all so much! Coming up next is Congo Bongo by Sega. If you have feedback for this game, please get it to me by January 21st. I am trying to turn over a new podcasting leaf, hopefully starting on feedback earlier will help. Thank you all so much for listening!
