Isometric shooter arcade game from 1982

The arcade was our favorite place to hang out. But there were some games that we blew thousands of quarters on because they were too hard. What do people think were the hardest retro arcade games? We get frustrated until we're broke on Enjoy Stuff. Pass the token 'pon the left hand side! We're gonna need ‘em all with the hardest games in the arcade. Don't get frustrated! Enjoy Stuff. News In retro news: Garfield phones invade the beaches of France! Star Wars: Andor season 2 premieres this week on Disney+ Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay continues to ride the trail of Western Movies, but adds a little prehistoric this week with his viewing of One Million Years BC. The quality of this Ray Harryhausen movie may not have been at the top of his list, but it was still an interesting idea and had some crazy genre mashups. Shua found some cool YouTube channels that have some great, high quality classic Pink Panther cartoons. It's a great way to have some retro in the background. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay gets real with the 2011 Hugh Jackman movie Real Steel. This often overlooked film has a lot of great robot action in the boxing ring, like a mechanical Rocky. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Video Games! We loved spending time in the arcade as we were growing up. We tried to use our quarters wisely and budget them for the maximum experience possible. But sometimes we had to cram a lot of them into games over and over because they were so hard. Which ones were the most challenging? Were they the same ones you struggled with? Let's see what the internet said and decide if we agree. What challenging games did we miss? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I need a cheat code” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. On this week's Play Retro podcast with Scott Johnson and Brian Dunaway, ZAXXON! Sega's revolutionary 1982 arcade game that introduced an isometric perspective to shoot-'em-ups, setting it apart from the top-down and side-scrolling shooters of its era. Its sequel, Super Zaxxon, amped up the difficulty with faster enemy movement and trickier level designs. We'll also briefly mention Future Spy, a lesser-known Sega shooter that borrowed elements from Zaxxon while adding a military espionage theme. Hosted on Acast. Friday - January 5, 2024Spiritual warrior Bill Bean discussed his life and transformation, and how he helps others break free from demonic influences. He believes his work is a calling that God has placed on his life to help people become free from evil. Despite not knowing the reasons behind these experiences, he firmly believes that his own past sufferings were instrumental in preparing him for his current role. Bean emphasized the importance of personal experience in building trust with trauma survivors and establishing a bond to help them.He recounted his own traumatic events from his childhood, detailing demonic attacks on his family, his near-destruction, and the miraculous transformation that occurred in his life. Bean described a pivotal moment when he decided to turn away from a destructive path, embrace faith, and make God the priority in his life. This transformation marked the beginning of his journey into demonology, spiritual warfare, and helping others break free from dark forces.Bean provided his insights into demonic possession, linking it to the frequency and vibration of life. He suggested that trauma and low-frequency living create susceptibility to demonic infiltration. He connected demonic possession to traumatic experiences, particularly cases involving child molestation or rape. Bean covered the process of spiritual deliverance and exorcism, highlighting the challenges and dangers involved. He also addressed the question of potential deception by demons during the process, and emphasizing the physical and emotional toll such experiences can take on him.------------------------------------------------The latter half of the program was devoted to Open Lines. Jim in Delaware referenced Revelation 13:18 and the calculation of the number of the beast, associating it with Elon Musk. He mentioned attempting to calculate Musk's name in both the Greek and Hebrew alphabets, arriving at the numerical value of 666. Jim expressed concern about the political shift to the left and suggested that Robert Kennedy may have entered politics due to this shift.Jane recounted a disturbing experience with her daughter, who had an unsettling connection with an entity named Lisa. Years ago, the family had moved into a house where the daughter claimed to interact with Lisa, a girl who had been beaten to death by her mother in a room down the hall. Strange occurrences, including the daughter's eerie behavior and the unexplained deaths of dogs in the pool, led to a visit from a parapsychologist who identified seven to eight entities in the home. The expert urged Jane to leave the possessed house immediately. Her daughter, now 40, remains distant and cold, and Jane suspects still in the grips of Lisa.UFO Phil phoned in about an encounter with an alien named Zaxxon he had in a recent dream. Zaxxon, who is nine feet tall, blue, and a leader of his race, revealed that in 2024, aliens will come to Earth and unveil themselves. VGbeats has got an hour of gaming classics in the mix for you this Saturday morning with tracks from Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, The Revenge of Shinobi, Sol-Feace and more, plus an Iceferno track you'll want to turn the volume up for and a track from a classic N64 drum and bass soundtrack.
Totally awesome video games! That's what Joysticks promises. Eugene, McDorfus and King Vidiot are running interference while we chew up the scenery of this 1983 T&A buffet. This movie has everything you do AND don't want you in your early 80s celluloid war chest. Scott McGinnis and Corrine Bohrer round out the casting staples of any great, but forgettable 80s flick. Joe Don Baker must have been blackmailed to be in this movie. Come to think of it, he was blackmailed IN this movie as well. Art imitating life...imitating art? Who knows. I'm as lost as that senile wizard wandering around the Gauntlet landscape with this summary anyway. PAC-MAN, Galaga, Defender, Asteroids, Zaxxon, Tempest, Two Tigers, Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Track & Field, Star Castle, Centipede, Dig Dug, Tron, Missile Command, Donkey Kong, Robotron, Frogger, Burger Time, Rampage, 1942, Berzerk, Q*Bert, Joust, Rolling Thunder, Contra, Double Dragon.....that's enough characters for a great summary, right?
Once more unto the breach, dear friends! The gang gets together again to reminince of the great game company, Sega.

VGBeats is in the mix with a selection of amazing tunes from games such as Shura no Mon, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors and more, plus a bogey track that's as sacrilegious as it is amazing!
In which the biggest segment of America's entertainment economy almost disappears in a single year due to lousy product, and Ken is too shy to play Zaxxon in public. Certificate #24180.

It's FRIENDS AND RIVALS Episode 49 and yes, we are from New Jersey! That's NEW Jersey! We kick the Devils when they're down after releasing one of the most heinous 3rd jerseys since the Tampa Bay lightning tried to put rain drops on a jersey in the late 90's that made it look like Zaxxon was attacking. Google it. This week the Rangers stay hot, the Penguins join them with their own hot streak, the Devils come up big against the two time Stanley Cup champs, and the Islanders go from bad to worse to worst to more worstest. Google it. Trivia with Bill is Finnish but not Finished. Steve gets the Bobby Seale treatment during Impressions with Nick (Google it), and our favorite special guest (sorry Tina, sorry Casey) joins us to analyze what's wrong with someone who would document every meal for almost two decades. And finally, we take a moment to say THANKS during our first EVER Thanksgiving episode. That's right, we have been out just under a year! Google it! Then enjoy FRIENDS AND RIVALS Episode 49!
Sega enters 1985 with the hottest game of 1982, and the good news is that Zaxxon looks and plays far more convincingly than its sibling release Congo Bongo did back in 1983. This adaptation of the arcade hit makes some curious tweaks to the game's flow and design, and it adds a bit of background music, which sets it apart from other conversions of the game. But in a good way, mostly. Champion Pro Wrestling fares less impressively, especially in hindsight. Apparently we have Sega to blame for how Tag Team Wrestling turned out on NES, with the sluggishness and the menus and the whatnot. Stupid Champion Pro Wrestling. SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTRONICS #34: Making Music with 2600 Hz Tones and Firmware Audio Update Files Number-based trivia: 2600, the hacker quarterly, is named after this 2600 hertz tone, which is a single tone that can override a payphone's pricing controls with one single command. Hi everyone, welcome back to the show. This week is about loud noises made by computers. Awful sounds like modems, faxes, and my favorite unbearable noise: The firmware update file. Firmware can be updated via an audio file and to demonstrate this, we discuss audio files from Korg's Monotribe, the W-slash sampler from Whimsical Raps, and Nanoloop. I thought it would be fun to make comforting music from these noises, and you can jump to "The Roomba is Dreaming" to hear the end result. The discussion for this week is a demonstration of using envelope generators to smooth out the harsh tones of a firmware file. In particular, a trapezoid generator based on an EMS Synthi is used to pull out tonal rhythms. Last week's Boing Boing post on "Booting DOS from vinyl" reminded me of cassette drive loading. We had an Atari 400 and an 800, and both of those used cassettes to load many of their games. I used to love that noise, and I expect Atari filtered the sound of the cassettes themselves, otherwise risk injuring the ears of kids who put the cassettes (intended for a computer) into their walkman (it would still play, after all). So you'll learn about Zaxxon, Frogger, and my favorite Atari cassette-based game: Salmon Run. All of these sound files work to load data because a lot can be communicated in a tone. If you think about a phone dialer, it is twelve separate pitched notes (0-9, pound and asterix) – These tones are used for any number of aggravating automated systems when you call customer service lines, and they also connect your call. There are a few tones never intended for you to hear, however, including the 2600 hertz tone, which was a tone generated by a payphone when a call was concluded. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak unofficially began Apple Computers with a phone phreaking device called the Blue Box. It was a device that sent out a 2600 hertz tone to fake (or phake) the sound of a phone getting disconnected. The two callers would remain on the phone, however, allowing a free call without billing. So in our introduction this week I demonstrate the 2600 hertz tone using a wonderful iphone app called Phonal Tonal, which replicates a Blue Box, Green Box, and a Red Box.

The shoot'em up genre was starting to lose steam by 1982, but leave it Sega/Gremlin to keep it alive with it's isometric approach to Zaxxon. Not only that, but advertisement for upcoming arcade titles was forever changed with Zaxxon, being the first to be featured in a TV commercial. Money was spent and money was made, Sega was on the rise in the arcade industry. Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thearcadefiles/message

My guest today is Daniel Cook, chief creative officer at SpryFox, creators of Triple Town, Alphabear, Road Not Taken and many more. Previous to Spryfox Daniel worked at the brand new Epic Mega Games (later simply Epic games) before spending a few years at Microsoft. He has also maintained his incredible design blog Lostgarden for over a decade. We talk about how much he loved the Amiga, Bitmap Brothers in particular, growing up in rural Maine, his work in the demo scene in the mid nineties, his deep love of deluxe paint and how he got his start in games thanks to an unsolicited portfolio sent by his friend. He also shares some incredible insight into the business of making games, how much he loved MUDs, the frustration he felt at Microsoft and why flash portals convinced him to get back into game design. PRE-PRODUCTION FORD MUSTANG MACH-E ROLLS OFF ASSEMBLY LINE IN MEXICO "Production (or at least pre-production) is now reportedly underway for the all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E. Here we see the first electric SUV to reportedly roll off the assembly line in Mexico." says Eric Loveday,. Editor In Chief for InsideEVs: " The images come to us via Ford's Facebook site for the stamping and assembly plant in Mexico and they appear to show one of the very first Mach-E electric SUVs in production (or at least near-production) form. This is not an early prototype and, as you can see in the images, this Mach-E looks ready to be sold. However, Ford says full production won't begin until Fall 2020, so either that's when the automaker plans to be in the full ramped-up stage or the car seen here is more of a pre-production model to test out tooling, stamping, assembly and other vehicle production processes and such." https://insideevs.com/news/400346/ford-mach-e-production-start/ MODEL Y CUSTOMERS ARE GETTING DELIVERY EMAILS NOW AnythingTesla @AnythingTesla "I ordered my LOng Range Dual Motor (not Performance) on Day 0 and just noticed by delivery pickup email! SAMSUNG SDI EXPANDS ITS BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY "According to the South Korean media, Samsung SDI has begun expansion of its lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant in Göd, Hungary." reports InsideEVs: "According to the South Korean media, Samsung SDI has begun expansion of its lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant in Göd, Hungary. The company is expected to invest KRW 1.2 trillion ($994 million / €917 million) in Hungary by 2030 and gradually increase the production to 18 million cells per month (around 6 million in the first plant and 12 million in the second plant)." https://insideevs.com/news/400155/samsung-sdi-expands-battery-plant-hungary/ TESLA WANTS TO OVERTURN SUNDAY DRIVING BAN FOR ELECTRIC TRUCKS "Tesla is preparing to produce its first “Semi” truck model. Last week Thursday, a delegation from the US company traveled to Berlin for a secret meeting. According to business insider information, Tesla is trying to get an exception so that electric trucks can also drive on Sundays and public holidays in the future." reports Business Insider: " a Tesla delegation traveled to Berlin on Thursday last week and met for a confidential discussion with the BMVI Parliamentary State Secretary, Steffen Bilger. At some point, the company representatives turned the conversation to electric trucks and called for a spectacular change in the law: the new, environmentally friendly truck generation should be exempted from the Sunday driving ban. " says Green Car Reports: "Lordstown hasn’t yet revealed how much more of the Workhorse truck has translated to the Endurance, but we expect quite a bit has carried over. The W-15 was to be built on clean-slate body-on-frame layout, with 18650-format Panasonic cylindrical cells powering it—much like the Tesla Model S and Model X—packaged between the frame rails. The Endurance promises to be quite different than other pickups due to its hub-motor system, which frees up space under the truck and mounts the motors inside the wheel hub. A number of suppliers like Elaphe, Protean, and Nidec, and have developed modern in-wheel motors that fit in about the space of an old-style drum brake. One issue, their “unsprung mass,” makes tuning the ride and handling of a vehicle more complicated, but it may be easier to accommodate in a truck like the Endurance." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127212_electric-pickup-from-former-gm-plant-will-have-in-wheel-hub-motors HONDA ADMITS AN ELECTRIC TYPE R MODEL IS POSSIBLE "Honda wants to electrify two-thirds of its lineup worldwide by 2030, which means that future performance vehicles from the brand could eventually be EVs. Hideki Kakinuma, the Honda Civic Type R project leader, talked to Motor Trend about what might happen: "Yes, of course, an electric Type R is possible." He indicated that the major challenge was offering the necessary performance at a reasonable price." according to Chris Bruce for Motor1: " "The Civic is currently the only vehicle in the Honda lineup to meet our requirements of what a Type R needs to be." Rumors suggest that the next-gen Civic Type R could adopt a hybrid powertrain because it offers the expected driving dynamics while improving emissions. Opting for a full EV isn't the plan, yet. If an electric Type R happens, then the new Honda E could be the first. The standard Honda E packs an electric motor powering the rear axle that's available with either 136 horsepower (100 kilowatts) or 154 hp (113 kW), A 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery offers 137 miles (220 kilometers) on a charge." https://www.motor1.com/news/400319/honda-electric-type-r-rumor/ FROM TESLA MOTORS CLUB: " I need a new car. I want a Tesla, husband is afraid of the technology. Can I get some quick facts for him on how an EV works?" by forum member EllieNovember, she says: "His main concern: "I just don't understand how it….works." I've told him to do some research like I have, but he still can't seem to grasp what makes the wheels physically move, how there's no transmission or gears, things like that. He's hesitant putting money down on a piece of technology that he can't understand." Forum member Zaxxon replies: "You appear to be in New Jersey, which just recently became the most EV-friendly (from a tax perspective) state. No sales tax *and* a $5k credit." https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/advice-needed-convincing-husband-to-go-tesla.186442/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV? I see some people have been giving one star lately and I just don’t understand that. Given, podcasts are up to a person’s tastes I think it's important to be objective. I can understand giving this podcast a 3 or 4 star if you prefer a different style. As for me this is a must listen podcast, and I probably listen to 3-4 hours of podcast per day while I work. This podcast has many qualities which I really like, starting with the host who is able to keep things brief and concise while getting across valuable information. I would add to this for a one man podcast the production value is top notch. The host has an excellent voice, great diction, and he is discerning about when to give the highlights of a topic or when to make a deeper dive. He’s always topical to my interests at any given moment which is great. I would also add that the demeanor of the host is great. Not only is he fair and honest with his assessment, but he does a wonderful job of giving relatively objective information and goes out of his way to explain his possible subjective biases. Tl;dr if you’ve got only 30 minutes to spare and want a thorough but brief recap of up to date Nintendo news, this is a must listen to Nintendo podcast!EmailHey Bill,Just wanted to send a message and let you know that I LOVE the podcast. Space Raid is a homebrew game by Oscar Toledo Gutierrez that is what Zaxxon should have been on the 2600. I had a lot of fun playing it, Oscar did a great job programming it. Ben Elgin and Benj Edwards reconvene with Jeremy to explore the first half of SEGA's arcade output. Like the games we're discussing, the episode starts off a bit shaky, but everything is awesome by 1985. Pengo! Zaxxon! Space Harrier! Hang On! And more!

Video games are headed to the Smithsonian. Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Justin break down the first 3 eras of games selected for the Art of Video Games exhibit and pretend they could do it better. Space Invaders, Mario, Disney, Zelda, and E.T? Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We gotta say a little validation feels great. It’s not every day your favorite past time gets the attention of the Smithsonian. Before we look at the games representing all of us, our Threesomes of the Week detour into a creepy public pool that gives Dead Space 2 a run for its horror cash. Ethan’s On the Spot question wants to know what our favorite ugly game is which leads us to discovering more of Karnov’s family tree. The Art of Video Games is no longer up for debate, but the games selected for the exhibit sure are. Being fans of all eras of gaming, we take our time picking through the winners and nominee list from the Atari through Super Nintendo eras. While plenty of our favorites are represented like Zaxxon, Super Mario Bros 3, and Dune II, things aren’t looking good for Disney fans. We tease our announcement of the next Horrible Game Night. Finally, the Brink reviews this week have really confused Justin L’s wallet. Our Think of the Children series continues with analysis of the best stories of the NES and SNES eras. Justin, Cole, Ethan, Gifford, and our guest, Craig reflect on Zeldas, Metroids, Quests, and soft Squares while forgetting your favorite game. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow It’s been a while since The Horrible Show thought of the children, but @pwrglove (Craig) joins Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Gifford to nominate some of their favorite gaming storylines to help round out those kids’ gaming educations. Of course you have to survive some classy babysitter conversation to get to the historical conversation, but we never said our podcast wasn’t a minefield. Gifford takes on us a mobile journey with this week’s On the Spot question about the future of the relationship between app developers and our favorite mobile providers. If that’s too futuristic for you, we will take you back home to the early days of video games as we seek out the stand out storylines of the first generations of video games. We use Nintendo as the time benchmark and attempt to cover the NEs, SNEs, and N64 eras, but only make it through the first two thanks to glorious overanalysis of Zaxxon, King’s Quest, Super Mario Bros, multiple Zeldas, Fantasies, and X-Com. What did we leave out? Probably something important, and feel free to let us hear about it as we finalize our list. Anger takes over the end of the episode as GiffTor and Ethan unleash their fury about their disappointment about Homefront.
