De cryptomarkt kende de afgelopen week een opmerkelijke omslag. Waar het er eerder nog somber uitzag, is de stemming nu volledig gekanteld. Bitcoin steeg in drie dagen tijd met zo’n achtduizend dollar naar 118.500 dollar. Daarmee lijkt de munt mee te liften op de onrust rond de Amerikaanse government shutdown en de koers van goud te volgen. Altcoins bewegen zoals vaak net iets harder mee. Tegelijkertijd richt de blik zich op het vierde kwartaal. Daarin beloven talloze bedrijven en netwerken gratis munten uit te delen via zogeheten airdrops. Daarmee proberen zij hun populariteit verder te vergroten, en het lijkt alsof iedereen daar nu tegelijk mee begonnen is. Bekende partijen zoals Metamask werken aan een eigen coin, terwijl ook verschillende protocollen in de wereld van decentralized finance meedoen. Voor wie de juiste stappen zet, ligt er gratis geld voor het oprapen. Toch is de praktijk weerbarstiger. De grootste beloningen gaan naar de meest actieve gebruikers, die al vroegtijdig betrokken waren of dagelijks met hoge bedragen handelen. Zo kregen de eerste gebruikers van het Plasma-netwerk duizenden dollars aan gratis tokens. Bij decentrale handelsplatformen belanden de beloningen vaak bij de groep die met grote volumes speculeert. Soms is ook registratie of het afstaan van gegevens nodig om mee te doen. Het toont vooral dat de verwachtingen voor de komende maanden hooggespannen zijn, ook al is er inhoudelijk weinig reden voor. In Nederland is er nieuws over de invoering van de Europese cryptowetgeving MICAR. Het platform BLOX heeft als één van de eerste Nederlandse partijen een vergunning van de AFM gekregen. Daarmee mag het bedrijf ook buiten Nederland actief worden. De aanvraagprocedure verliep stroef en lang niet alle bedrijven zijn op tijd binnen. Zo wachten onder andere Bitonic en Coinmerce nog altijd op goedkeuring. Zij opereren formeel zonder vergunning, al heeft de AFM eerder aangegeven dat er sprake kan zijn van maatwerk. Dat komt neer op terughoudendheid in marketing en klantenwerving, in afwachting van een definitieve beoordeling. Tot slot wil Tether geld ophalen tegen een waardering van 500 miljard dollar. Daarmee zou het bedrijf in de buurt komen van de allergrootste Amerikaanse techspelers. Tether wil 15 tot 20 miljard dollar aantrekken, bovenop de enorme reserves die het al bezit. Waarvoor het geld nodig is, is niet duidelijk. Deze week in de CryptocastEen gesprek met Bart van de Donk van Chainalysis, het bedrijf dat voor overheden en bedrijven, zoals de politie en crypto exchanges, de blockchainanalyse faciliteert. Zij hebben een redelijk compleet beeld van de criminaliteit op blockchains. Afgelopen jaar ging daar 61 miljard dollar in om, maar dat is relatief gezien dan weer een daling. Co-host is Mauro Halve. Chainalysis is inmiddels een van de bekendste namen in de wereld van blockchainanalyse en opsporing van cryptocriminaliteit. et bedrijf zelf is sinds 2022 flink veranderd. Eerder in de Cryptocast spraken we met Bas Lemmens, inmiddels Chief Revenue Officer. Nu is Bart van de Donk te gast, regional sales manager bij het bedrijf. Sindsdien zijn er meerdere overnames gedaan en is de nadruk op misdaadpreventie nog sterker geworden. Chainalysis helpt overheden, toezichthouders en belastingdiensten, maar ook banken en cryptobedrijven om criminele activiteiten op te sporen en beter te begrijpen. Dat gebeurt met verschillende producten en analyses, die inzicht geven in hoe geldstromen zich op blockchains bewegen. Wat betreft cryptocriminaliteit vallen de trends van de afgelopen jaren op. Er is sprake van een voortdurend kat-en-muis-spel tussen opsporing en criminelen. 2025 liet zelfs recorddiefstallen zien, terwijl ransomware, dat eerder juist piekte, nu iets lijkt af te nemen. Mogelijk doordat preventiemethoden verbeteren en de pakkans stijgt. Stablecoins spelen ondertussen een steeds grotere rol in illegale geldstromen. Criminelen kiezen er vaak voor omdat de waarde stabiel blijft en transacties gemakkelijk zijn, ook buiten de publieke blockchain om. Toch blijven ook alternatieven als Lightning en handel via exchanges lastig in kaart te brengen. Een sprekend voorbeeld is de operatie Spincaster, waar Chainalysis aantoonde hoe blockchainanalyse kan leiden tot concrete resultaten in opsporing. Zulke casussen laten zien dat transparantie op de blockchain een wapen kan zijn tegen misbruik. Tot slot bespreken we het jaarlijkse Geography of Crypto Report van Chainalysis. Daarin springt een opvallende top vijf uit: India, de Verenigde Staten, Pakistan, Vietnam en Brazilië staan bovenaan wat betreft adoptie. Wereldwijd is het stablecoinvolume explosief gegroeid en in alle inkomensgroepen neemt het gebruik van crypto toe. Die stijging heeft te maken met inflatie, kapitaalrestricties en de zoektocht naar alternatieven voor traditionele valuta. Ook zien we dat crypto zich steeds verder verspreidt buiten de traditionele markten.
