"HO HO HO." PJ and Andy meet to celebrate Hogswatch with gerbils, eggnog, and a fine festive Pratchett, with more mergings of sociology and fantasy. Albert and Death have frank discussions about childhood and income inequality amongst celebrations on fiction and belief, as f-frightening Teatime stalks the disc. An extra special episode and a happy Hogswatch to you all. Have you enjoyed Hogfather or Jingo for the first time? Bible Reading: John 10:7-10Jayla's black and white kitten dug his claws into the leg of her jeans. She shook him off and started loading the dishwasher. Meow! protested the kitten."What do you want, Jingo?" asked Jayla. Jingo bounced to the sliding door. "I guess you're ready to go outside," said Jayla. The kitten meowed and--according to Jayla--smiled. "You said, 'Uh-huh,' didn't you? I'll open the door for you as soon as I finish putting the dishes in the dishwasher." But Jingo didn't want to wait. He attached himself to the leg of Jayla's jeans again. "Ouch!" she exclaimed. "Quit that!"Jingo dropped to the floor and trotted back and forth between Jayla and the door. Finally, he stationed himself there and looked at Jayla with enormous green eyes. Jayla laughed. "Okay, Jingo. You win. I'll open the door for you." She dried her hands, and with Jingo at her heels, she walked to the door. When she opened it, he bounded outside and made a beeline for his favorite spot in the sunshine. When she was finished with her chores, Jayla went to her room. Soon she returned to the kitchen. "Mom, guess what? I was just working on learning my verse for church, and Jingo gave me an example of what it means.""Really?" asked Mom. "And what is that?""Well, Jingo knows he can't open the door himself, so he comes to me and gets me to open it for him," Jayla explained. "So the way outside is through me--it's like I'm the door for him. That's like my verse. It says Jesus is the door to salvation. We can't get into heaven by ourselves, but when we trust in Jesus, He opens the door so we can get in--He saves us from sin and gives us eternal life.""That's a good way to look at it!" said Mom, and she and Jayla laughed as they looked out the window and saw Jingo jump around on the grass, having the time of his life. "But unlike you and Jingo, Jesus doesn't just open the door and then leave us. The Bible says He's always with us, from now into eternity." "Jingo is a lot of fun," said Jayla. "And now he's taught me something too." –Glenna B. RobertsHow About You?How do you expect to get into heaven? Do you think you can get there by being good? By obeying your parents? By going to church? It won't work. There's no way you can get into heaven except through the door--Jesus Christ. The only way for you to be saved and have eternal life is through Him. Trust Jesus to open the door for you today. Here's the episode where we learn where the word Jingoism was born. After talking last time about the remarkable achievements on the domestic front of the second Disraeli government with its social reform, this week we start to look at what interested him far more: foreign affairs. And the biggest affair of them all was the ‘Eastern Question', precipitated by yet another war between Russia and Turkey. That in turn followed on from the massacres carried out by Turkish forces in the Balkans, specifically what came to be known as the ‘Bulgarian atrocities'. Gladstone re-emerged from semi-retirement to denounce those horrors. Disraeli, on the other hand, was far more worried about the behaviour of the Russians and intent on blocking their expansion. As time went on, public opinion seemed to swing increasingly in his direction. “We don't want to fight,” claimed the music hall song, “but by Jingo if we do, we've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too.” In deciding how to confront the Russian threat, Disraeli found himself working increasingly closely with a man with whom he'd previously fallen out badly, Lord Salisbury. And, we'll see, their collaboration worked. Illustration: HMS Alexandra, flagship of the British Mediterranean fleet in the 1870s, and one of the ironclads that forced the Dardanelles. Synopsis In 1935 Aaron Copland finished a new orchestral work that was to be premiered by the Minneapolis Symphony and its young conductor Eugene Ormandy. The work was entitled Statements for Orchestra, and consisted of six short movements, each with a descriptive title, namely: Militant, Cryptic, Dogmatic, Subjective, Jingo, and Prophetic. The Jingo movement alludes to the popular tune Sidewalks of New York – where Copland completed the orchestration of his new score. The last two movements were premiered by the Minneapolis Symphony early in 1936, first on an NBC radio broadcast, then on one of the orchestra's subscription concerts. The conductor, however, was not Ormandy but rather Dimitri Mitropoulos, who would become the Music Director of the Minneapolis Symphony the following year. And it was Mitropoulos who would lead the first complete performance of all six of Copland's Statements on today's date in 1942 during a concert by the New York Philharmonic. The new piece got good reviews, and Copland quoted with pride one given by his friend and colleague Virgil Thomson, which called the music “succinct and stylish, cleverly written and very, very personal …“ Much to Copland's surprise this music never really caught on with orchestras or audiences. “To my disappointment,” wrote Copland, “Statements remains one of my lesser-known scores.” Music Played in Today's Program Aaron Copland (1900 –1990) Statements London Symphony; Aaron Copland, conductor. Daisy May Cooper, the comedy actor and writer joins Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles to talk about how her life growing up in rural Gloucestershire inspired the BBC Three mockumentary-style, This Country. Thomas Leeds also joins us. He was left with no memories of his childhood after a car accident, until an iconic 80s song suddenly unlocked memories that had been lost for years. When Jacob Mitchell aka MC Grammar, a teacher from north London, posted a video of himself rapping The Gruffalo to his four-year-old daughter, it went viral and he's now teaching kids amazing facts through rap. TV stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge bought a dilapidated chateau in the Pays de la Loire in France and have spent the last few years transforming it into a sustainable business as well as a home for them and their two children. We have the Inheritance tracks of DJ Pete Tong who chooses Jingo performed by Santana and What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. And your Thank you. Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Eleanor Garland

While Jingo is broadly classified as a Guards book, it really is the beginning of a series of Sam Vimes books with the Watch in orbit around him. There's also a LOT of our favorite carnivorous flamingo, The Patrician himself. There's submarine action, a plot head-fake that would be at home in film noir or Tom Clancy, and lots and lots of politics. It also marks an inflection point in Discworld novels, at least to those of us very familiar with them. Sam very much finds who he will be in the back half of the Discworld library in this book, and much of the commentary that happens around the plot is clearly Sir Terry rethinking some of his earlier easy stereotypes. Our guest Scott Paladin can be found on twitter @scottpaladin and online at scottpaladin.com, as cohost on the Monster Mechanics Podcast @monstermpod and monsterpod.org, and as writer/director/editor on the Breathing Space, Fading Frontier audio drama @BreathingXSpace breathingspace.lawofnames.com.Check us out on twitter at @atuin_podHelp us keep the lights on via our Patreon!Follow individual hosts at @urizenxvii, @The_Miannai, and @JustenwritesWe can also be found at www.compleatdiscography.pageOur art is by the indomitable Jess who can be found at @angryartist113Music is by Incompetech and used under a Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution license.Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4457-take-a-chanceFuzzball Parade by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5044-fuzzball-paradeLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Welcome to our third full podcast, a discussion of Carl Barks' "Too Many Pets"! Listen as we discuss what type of Donald we get in this story, talk about the shadows of WWII lurking in the background, learn about the history of organ grinders, and...isn't Jingo the Monkey the cutest? This may be one of Carl Barks' more minor works (fight us), but we still enjoyed it and had a great time talking Ducks.

As we fast forward to concluding 2019, many people will be focusing on their New Year's Resolutions. Indeed, this has a greater sense of priority as it is the start of a new decade. Before we get into that, it is important to reflect without bias on your achievements throughout the year. Have you managed to Lead yourself and others effectively in the pursuit of your goals? As a backdrop to answer this question we have debated the various leadership styles exhibited by Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson in the 2019 UK general elections. Both exhibited contrasting styles with the result evidenced by a massive win for Boris Johnson. We unpack the common leadership styles so you can also see which style or combination will best match your personality, views and vision for the future. The good thing about leadership is that it can be taught, so long as one remains opened minded and open to be challenged though constructive feedback and can reflect without bias. In this Podcast we discuss the hidden forces at play that drive relationships that can be perceived as positive or negative – the outcome is ultimately measured by our own values, beliefs and goals. This back and forth discussion between your host Douglas Hamandishe along with co-host Jingo is at times brutal as it is honest, as we reflect on own friendships and relationships – nothing is off-limits, you will not look at your friendships again in the same light, especially those of you focused in achieving your goals. This podcast is a must-listen. Key themes How does the friendship circle determining the level of success we are going to have/achieve? You know the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together” At the core over every relationship lies the seed of ‘NEED', fail to acknowledge this at your own peril. What are the 3 toxic personality types you need to avoid in any relationship; friendship; partnership or marriage? The first clue is the Blood Sucker! 2nd clue – Dream Assassin and lastly the Slave Maker! What value do you bring to the relationship? Time to be honest here, what role do you play, and can you ever change your role in a relationship whilst maintaining the same level of trust and respect? How much control or choice do we have when choosing our friendships? Certain friendships are formed within the environment you have grown up in but that doesn't mean they align with your values or destiny! We touch the tip of the iceberg on this important topic in the hope that it inspires you to maintain, seek out and value quality relationships/friendships they can shape who you are, where you are going and the perspective life. In the fourth installment of our Remedial Readalong series, we return to the the world of the Disc, caught in the middle of a fight over a spit of land in the middle of the ocean. What follows is a tale of patriotism gone mad, where seemingly harmless talk about some leads to war and ruin for all. But it's also a story about what can happen when good people choose to stand up and do something about it. Talking points: nationalism in fantasy setting; American involvement in the Middle East vs British Expansionism; extended metaphors about rockslides; quiet racism; the consequences of thinking a problem doesn't matter because it isn't yours yet; choices, time, and the deviations they can cause; that trademark Terry Pratchett anger (and wit!); and, hey, what is the difference between Us, Them, and Me?
