Today, we're looking back at Astyanax, an action platformer released for arcade and NES in 1989 and a game we both grew up playing. Sometimes referred to as "The Lord of King" or "The Astyanax", the original arcade game was developed by Aicom and published by Jaleco, with the NES version developed and published by Jaleco. Both versions share some similarities, like fighting hordes of mythological creatures, but the key difference for our show is they feature completely different soundtracks. We'll be focusing on the NES soundtrack written by Toshiko Tasaki with an occasional detour to the arcade original composed by Kiyoshi Yokoyama. Tonight we are reflecting on David Crane's A Boy and HIs Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia., a 1989 puzzle-platformer developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment in North America and published by Nintendo in Europe in 1991. Jaleco published the game in Japan also in 1991. Imagineering was also known for the releases of Ghostbusters 2 (no not the good one), the Simpsons games and Barbie.
Cute, but dead ‘ard – that's us! Er, no, that's this show's featured game Plus Alpha from Jaleco. Shaun finds out that that metal cupboard in the kitchen with a hole in it is actually an oven. He can now have hot pies now.

We've got a really fun soundtrack to dive into in this episode from a Jaleco arcade title released in 1989 called Plus Alpha, composed by Tsukasa Tawada. It's an overhead shooter similar to Twinbee, Raiden, or 1942/43 and was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2020 under the Arcade Archives series published by HAMSTER Corporation. Tsukasa Tawada brings lots of variety in this soundtrack, which is a ton of fun and also hits all the marks for an awesome arcade experience. Tracklist: All tracks composed by Tsukasa Tawada 00:04 Triumphal Return Overture (Title) 03:26 Wind Dancer (Stage 1 Wind Country) 08:25 Into Blue (Stage 2 Sea Colony) 09:39 Bird Island (Stage 3 Flower Town) 14:20 Sun Colors (Stage 4 Snow Country) 16:08 Last Heart (Stage 5 Sand City) 19:54 Neo Baroque (Stage 7 Eden) 21:11 Boss Stage 22:06 Harmonica for Peace (Unused) 26:47 Ending Theme Thanks to ctr from VGMRips for creating the pack!

It's a few days before Christmas, and we just have a regular episode that's been in the can for a week. Sorry about that. But the games are pretty interesting. We're talking about Tuff E Nuff and Top Gear 2. Also we briefly mention Utopia: Creation of a Nation. Tuff E Nuff is a goofy fighting game taking place in a dystopia where society has collapsed and the majority of its roster is locked behind a cheat code. But other than that, this one actually isn't bad for a fighting game of this vintage. We'll tell you what we think it learned the right lessons from Street Fighter, and what it could have improved on... ya know, if Jaleco had ever given us a sequel to this one. Top Gear 2 as a big legacy to live up to, as it's predecessor was a racing game that really took us by surprise. Does this one rise to the heights of the original, or will it be a disappointment? Listen and find out.

It's time to talk about Koei for the very last time. Yup, we're calling it a day on covering Koei games (with possibly a few exceptions) as we just can't wrap our heads around them. We'll explain more in the episode. But, for games we are going to talk about, we've got Mortal Kombat and Operation Logic Bomb. Mortal Kombat is a port of the classic arcade game that looses the blood. Is there anything that can redeem this defanged fighting classic? Well... you'll just have to give it a listen. We also discuss Jaleco's Operation Logic Bomb. It's a top-down shooter with... something going on. We'll talk about this one and whether or not we think it's worth your time. Enjoy!

OctoRock (Adam) — Today at 9:46 AM My three favorite non-TMNT bmups are The Simpsons arcade game, Battletoads and River City Ransom. The Simpsons may actually beat out TMNT for me as far as the 4 player arcade experience goes. Just such a hilarious and well crafted game. Battletoads speaks for itself, I'm not sure if it's a full blown bmup because of the platforming and speeder bike levels, but they teamed up with Double Dragon so that's gotta say something. River City Ransom is probably the only oddball here. A great semi-obscure NES game that thankfully a lot of people are now aware of thanks to River City Girls. One of my favorite NES titles and up there with Battletoads for me. the Well-Red Mage — Today at 9:50 AM Shredders Revenge is AH MAH GAHHHHHHHH so good. A beat em up nobody gives enough love to is Fight N Rage. Seriously amazing. ElPeeDee (Liam D) — Today at 10:09 AM mine has to be Batman Returns for SNES. I loved the grabbing & throwing mechanics, breaking parts of the environment and the bat gadgets you could employ. the sprite art was gorgeous and, while I hadn't even seen the movie at that point, I loved the characters twodollarhero — Today at 10:25 AM For me, it's Scott Pilgrim. It's not the most mechanically dense beat-em-up, but I've come to realize that I prefer the River City Ransom approach of simpler gameplay, but a more fleshed out world with characters, shops, etc. Paul Robertson's artwork is gorgeous and the soundtrack by Anamanaguchi is among the greatest in video game history, full stop. It's two for two for the road this week with Bubble Bobble, a game specifically designed to be played with another person, and Racket Attack, the second-ever NES tennis game which, like Nintendo's Tennis, offers support for doubles play (though not competitive play). Amidst all the moral panic about the way video games were rotting the brains of America's youth and turning us into violent killers, here's a pair that emphasizes cooperation. Stupid moral panickers. I jumped onboard with the original XDA, and Jumped off right at the end with the HTC HD2! I had pretty much every incarnation in between, including the iMate Jam Ted mentioned. My personal favourite was the HTC Advantage that had a 4GB HDD (Yes, spinning HDD)! Along with the Battery life not being great, I recall the XDA also had volatile memory! So, if your battery hit zero, you would lose all your data, messages etc. until you synced with your PC! Any messages that you had received after the last sync would be lost forever! Breath of the Wild is delayed to 2023, is it a sign of a new console launch? TW's been playing stuff in Mystery Fun Fest, where he learned that Fall Guys is somehow actually more fun now than at launch! Also, we talk about how annoying it is when you can tell advertising is successfully manipulating you. Literally the only reason we played Avenging Spirit is because of Tom digging up the ridiculous box art differences between regions. We had to know why it was like that, and it somehow ended up making sense almost immediately. And then it turned out to be a surprisingly good game from a bizarrely obscure development studio (but published by Jaleco, which is honestly more of a running gag at this point than anything). It's time for SPORTSBALL, because Tom randomly bought me a handheld game console containing 7 different NES sports titles from Jaleco: Bases Loaded (1-4), Hoops, Goal!, and Racket Attack. So I demanded he play them as well and we do a podcast on ALL OF THEM. They're mostly terrible, with one ESPECIALLY bad one and some pleasant surprises (listen to the theme at the end of this episode - it's from Bases Loaded 3, which was composed by the guy who did the sound effects for Street Fighter 2). Other topics - Sony buys Bungie, my changing game-buying habits, and if Nintendo will ever introduce a centralized achievement system. An 8-bit heavy hitter makes its Famicom debut, right around the same time as they first dipped a toe into the SG-1000 market: Konami, eventual creators of Castlevania and Contra, here still a mere stripling of a home games developer. As on Sega's platform, Konami made its debut in Nintendo-land with two games, though I would say both turned out far better than their SG-1000 counterparts. I mean, nobody's going to fall in love with Yie Ar Kung-Fu here in 2021, but Antarctic Adventure (or Kekkyoku Nankyoku Daibouken, if you want to be formal about it) is a good time for all. Less so the third entry in this episode, Jaleco and TOSE's dire rendition of Universal's Ninja-kun. It feels like Famicom is kind of playing catch-up with SG-1000 this episode, as every game appearing here arrived on shelves in the wake of a Sega-published equivalent—either the exact same game (as in Space Invaders), one exploring the same root concept in different ways (Soccer), or a game with almost suspicious conceptual and mechanical similarities (Formation Z). Of course, the Nintendo version of these games absolutely eclipsed Sega's, right? Well... maybe not always. F-1 Super Battle is a racing game from 1994 for Jaleco's Mega System 32 arcade board. It's notable features are that it still features sprite graphics fairly late for an arcade game, and the upright arcade cabinet is a somewhat unusual egg shape.
Welcome back, this is episode three of the APAHM series. Today's episode will cover the Watsonville riots of 1930. The Watsonville riots were acts of racial violence toward Filipino farmworkers over the course of 5 days from January 19, 1930 to January 23, 1930. This riot resulted in the death of Fermin Tobera. It wasn't until 2011 when the State of California apologized for these acts. And it wasn't until 2020 that the City of Watsonville issued a formal apology. Let's take a look at some of the reasons why this event happened, and the aftermath. Resources from this episode: Equal Justice Initiative. (2019, November 11). Filipino farmworkers. This week we hit on the two most expensive games for the SG-1000. Every console's gotta have at least one of them, right? The ultra-rare collector's chase piece that hits the brakes on any reasonable dream of ever owning a complete set? In this case, those disasterpieces are Space Slalom, a mere slip of an almost-racing game, and Pachinko, the pachinko sim so busted they recalled it. Yes, the great console gaming tradition of incredibly expensive games also being incredibly undesirable for gameplay purposes really begins here, with the SG-1000. On the plus side, there's also Zippy Race, a pretty good conversion of a minor Irem arcade hit, and Exerion, a Jaleco arcade port that tries really hard, bless its heart. And that wraps it up for 1983! Next up: 1984, surprisingly enough.
Sega has always been an arcade powerhouse—even now, they run arcades in Japan. They've become fan destinations for more than just playing games; I bought taiyaki in the shape of the Sega logo at their Akihabara location a year ago. And this episode showcases just how heavily Sega plowed the arcade-to-home conversion furrow from the very start, with four games based heavily on arcade properties or concepts: Sega Flipper, arguably the first true arcade-style video console pinball game; Pop Flamer, a port of a weird Jaleco coin-op; Pacar, a sequel in all but name to Head On; and Sega-Galaga... which is just Galaga, but for Sega. They're not all winners, but they're mostly good! Just pretend Pop Flamer never happened. That game could never live up to its delirious box art, anyway.

Echoing last week's episode, this week we see a decidedly dated-looking game (City Connection) that nevertheless manages to be entertaining enough to transcend its relative age and sit comfortably in the 1988 NES lineup. On the other hand, Freedom Force is anything but dated, with some of the most stylish visuals seen to this point on NES. I'd rather play City Connection, but there's no denying the primal visual appeal of Freedom Force's attract mode.... Also, a bit of housekeeping: The host segments will be a little unusual for the next few episodes as my office space is currently unavailable for filming, forcing me to tape next to my portable photo box for the time being. Also, I realized while reviewing this episode that I made a point unclearly—I said Freedom Force is the first example on NES of a Japanese and American studio collaborating, which obviously isn't true. It's the first example I can name of the Japanese and American branches *of a single studio* collaborating on a project.
It’s our first episode in TADPOG Hexagon! We’re (kinda) talking about Pro Sport Hockey for the SNES, the 1993 hockey game developed by Tose and published by Jaleco. A pair of bog-standard sports titles awaits us as the Super NES library makes the transition from November to December 1991. We've already seen takes on these sports (golf and baseball) in very similar formats. What do T&E Soft and Culture Brain have to offer that HAL and Jaleco didn't? If anything!?
Enlouquecemos!
