Adam ran into a recent article which posed questions about whether nuclear power presents issues of racism, sexism and ageism. He takes a deep dive and explores if and how this could be true. Next up, our favourite astronomer and 5th Beatle joins us to talk all about lenses, following up on a segment about daredevil “Mad Mike” Hughes who died in a homemade rocket attempting to “prove” the Earth is flat.
In this episode we pick up where we left off in the last episode, ‘New Flat World Order 1 Flimflammers Charlatans and Snake Oil' with Flat Earth Theory's introduction to the interwebs in the naughties through Daniel Shenton.Unlike 19th century pseudoscience quack Samuel Rowbotham, actual research and experimentation or at least the illusion of it seem to be of no interest to Shenton and his followers. We will also deep dive into the most egregious and objectionable of the current flat earth peddlers, YouTube Yoga instructor Eric Dubay, head of the International Flat Earth Research Society and his, ‘200 Proofs Earth is Not a Spinning Ball.'I will focus on his blatant dishonesty and the attitude he has towards his reader. You won't be surprised by his complete and utter lack of even the most basic scientific knowledge. You will be surprised by just how much he thinks he can hide that ignorance from his intellectually limited audience. From making ridiculous claims like he can see right through the ‘transparent' moon to fraudulently misrepresenting scientific papers he didn't understand. With a straight face and no shame he proudly announces he does not know the difference between a rocket and a jet or how they work and yet he's the one to expose the Flat Earth truth! But Dubay is not the only science denying history whitewashing reprobate we investigate. There's also Tila Tequila. Remember her? No, didn't think so.Or what about Noel Hadley who believes Lucille Ball was a witch who's ancestry can be traced back to the Salem Witch Trials? He also believes the atomic bomb is a hoax. The great American pastime of Baseball is actually a Freemason ritual. The 1893 Chicago World Fair was a hoax to re-write the true history of Chicago actually being a city that was established hundreds of years before European settlement. Aids, malaria, polio and Covid 19 are all hoaxes. The Manson family, Nancy Kerrigan and Lorena Bobbitt cases were all hoaxes. Being a Flerfer is just the tip of the iceberg that sunk the Titanic with this guy, which he also believes is a hoax. When you hear about these outrageous pundits of Flat Earth Theory you'll think you're being Punk'd. Speaking of which we'll also talk about former cast member of that MTV show, Owen Benjamin. We learn about the dubious relationship daredevil Mad Mike Hughes had with the community and what the young Earth creationists over at Answers in Genesis think of the whole thing. And of course we can't forget star of the Netflix Documentary, Behind the Curve, Mark Sargent in this Dunning Kruger effect on steroids filled episode.
Whoaaaaa! You're reading this show note (possibly) on Halloween, about an episode released on Halloween, featuring a game called "Halloween", inspired by the movie "Halloween". Spooky! Which is appropriate because in episode 292, we're playing the Wizard Video 1983 title "Halloween". If you enjoy sprite decapitations and 8-bit child murder in a Skittles-colored house, this is the game for you. If not, blame Patreon supporter Patrick McCarthy who suggested this. Over the last handful of years, we got to know Mad Mike Hughes....limo driver, stuntman, daredevil, and a man who was hell bent on getting into outer space on his own terms. Sadly, his quest was cut short in February of last year. And if there was anyone who knew what made Mad Mike tick, it was his friend and collaborator/enabler Waldo Stakes, who is featured alongside Mike in the new Discovery Plus docu-series, Homemade Astronauts. We got to meet Waldo today....and, man....he is crazy in the best way possible. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Before his untimely death, we got to know Mad Mike Hughes, the stuntman who was attempting to make it to space in him home built rocket. Sadly, on Feb 22nd 2020, that quest came to a terrible end. But Hughes isn't the only person out there trying to make their dream of going to space a reality...as is examined in the new Discovery Plus docu-series, "Homemade Astronauts" And we had the opportunity to chat with one of those brave, and some say crazy, individuals, anthropology professor Cameron Smith, about his quest....and we found he just may know what he's doing! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Finally, the show no one was waiting for: the flat Earth spectacular. In our longest episode to date, we dive into the world of the flat Earth theory, Bernnie recounts the life and tragic loss of the legend "Mad" Mike Hughes, and one of the cast infiltrates the flat Earth forums to provide thought provoking information. Best of all, one of our favorite guests returns to provide much needed commentary. Welcome to the post-apocalyptic year that is 2021! If you're still with us, you have survived, only to be disappointed yet again. This week, we learn about the dome over Mickey's Village of the Damned, Bernnie confesses his true feelings about Flat and Hollow- Earthers (he actually does prefer one over the other), we figure out the master plans of the lizard people from the Alpha Draconis system, and the show endst with a tribute to an American hero, "Mad" Mike Hughes. Make sure you wear your tin foil hat and enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/multiplepersonalities/message

"We're making good progress. The thing that we're really making progress on with Starship is the production system … A year ago there was almost nothing there and now we've got quite a lot of production capability," Musk said, referring to the company's expanding facilities at its Boca Chica campus in South Texas, according to Space News. Musk shared these updates yesterday during the Humans to Mars Summit, which is conducted by the advocacy group Explore Mars. On Aug. 4, SpaceX's prototype SN5 successfully completed a "hop" test, flying to an altitude of 492 feet (150 meters) and landing on another pad. However, the company's four previous prototypes were all destroyed in ground tests and its sixth prototype, SN6, never completed a hop test, after the event was scrubbed Aug. 30 for reasons not disclosed. Now, as Musk announced during the summit, SpaceX is beginning construction on "booster prototype one," the Super Heavy first stage of the system. He also shared that he expects Starship to make its first uncrewed orbital flight test "probably next year," according to Space News. However, he didn't specify if this orbital test would fly just the Starship vehicle or with the addition of this new booster. "I hope we do a lot of flights. The first ones might not work," Musk said. "This is uncharted territory. Nobody's ever made a fully reusable orbital rocket." He was speaking at the Adventurers' Club of Los Angeles. The then-62-year-old flat-earther had already launched himself nearly 2,000 feet into the sky twice in steam-powered rockets that he'd built himself—and he was planning to do it again. Hughes was also building a “rockoon”—part rocket, part balloon—to send himself 62.8 miles up to the edge of space, known as the Kármán Line, to “see what shape this planet is” for himself this October. His talk at the Adventurers' Club, a men's organization with exotic animal busts and shrunken heads and mastodon tusks on the walls, was part self-promotion and part of his $2.8 million crowdfunding effort for the rockoon launch. “At one time in this country, we thought anything was possible, but we don't believe we can do anything anymore,” Hughes told me. “Maybe [this launch] inspires the guy who's really going to change the world, or the group of people.” Hughes's exploits included a Guinness World Record for longest limo jump in 2002, a run for governor of California in 2018, and hosting a Flat Earth conference in Vegas in 2019. He was the subject of a documentary called Rocketman, and he was taking part in an upcoming Science Channel show called Homemade Astronauts. He was also known for his fiercely anti-government views. He lived a simple life. Stakes said Hughes paid him $323 a month in rent. They bought parts for the rockets as cheaply as they could, from scrap-yards, Craigslist, or eBay. Hughes took a 35 percent cut in his Social Security payments by retiring at age 62 instead of 67. “As a daredevil, I figured I was playing the odds,” he quipped. The Verbal Shenanigans guarantee we will always entertain and fight to uncover the biggest conspiracies (guarantee voided in most states and countries). Tonight we investigate the flat earth with producer Toby Brusseau. Toby produced the documentary of “Mad Mike” Hughes, who built a homemade rocket to prove the Earth was flat. Hear how Toby got in touch with Mike, the stories on the production of the show, his relationship and thoughts on Mike, and his thoughts on the flat earth theory. We later dive into the tragic second attempt that ended in the passing of Mike. Check out the movie “Rocketman : Mad Mike’s Mission to Prove the Flat Earth” and listen to this interview” We also talk ridiculous running outfits, the trustworthiness of news, and whether or not The Walking Dead exists anymore.

With half the crew in isolation, we take a reprieve from coronavirus news. First, Adam digs into headlines about daredevil "Mad Mike" Hughes who died in a homemade rocket accident intended to “prove” the Earth is flat. One of our two favourite Stuarts, Dr. Stu Robbins, brings us a relatively compelling look into the precession of Mercury. Finally, Darren brings us an interesting overview of revealed preferences, a major theory of consumption behaviour.

"Mad" Mike Hughes was a stunt man who built a rocket out of scraps and tried to launch himself as high and fast as possible. Was he really trying to prove the earth was flat, as he claimed, or was he simply trying to make a name for himself by doing something spectacular and dangerous? We may never know the answer for sure, but this is the story we do know.

The representative said "business is operating normally" while the company investigates the incident. Security experts told TechCrunch that the DoppelPaymer ransomware was responsible for the hack. DoppelPaymer demands a ransom in exchange for declining to publish the stolen files, and so far, nondisclosure agreements involving Tesla and SpaceX have been posted on a public website, according to TechCrunch's report. SpaceX moving on to Starship SN2 prototype after SN1 bites the dust in test Link: https://www.space.com/spacex-starship-sn1-prototype-test-failure-sn2-next.html Elon Musk seems to be taking SpaceX's recent Starship setback in stride. On Friday night (Feb. 28), the second full-size prototype of SpaceX's Mars-colonizing Starship vehicle, a variant known as the SN1, was destroyed during a pressurization test. Musk didn't immediately tweet about Friday night's incident. But the billionaire entrepreneur posted a few items early Monday morning (March 2) that suggest he's not dwelling on the SN1's demise. "So … how was your night?" read one tweet, which accompanied a video of the prototype's death. This was followed by "It's fine, we'll just buff it out," and then another tweet that said, "Where's Flextape when you need it!?" And in yet another Monday-morning tweet, Musk said that SpaceX has shifted its focus to the next prototype iteration, the SN2, which is already under construction. "We're stripping SN2 to bare minimum to test the thrust puck to dome weld under pressure, first with water, then at cryo. Hopefully ready to test in a few days," Musk wrote. May Have Blacked Out Link: https://www.tmz.com/2020/03/02/daredevil-mad-mike-hughes-fatal-rocket-crash-backup-parachutes/ "Mad" Mike Hughes may have blacked out and that's why he failed to deploy backup parachutes moments before his fatal rocket crash ... TMZ has learned. Mike's rep, Darren Shuster, tells TMZ ... the daredevil's launch got off to a terrible start when his parachute got snagged by a ladder next to the rocket. Mike needed a ladder because he didn't wanna be lifted into it, as they had initially prepared. When the parachute got snagged, Mike's ground control crew radioed Mike and ordered him to deploy his backup parachute. There were 2 backups on the rocket. Problem was ... the ground crew never got a response from Mike. Shuster tells us Mike's crew believes he may have blacked out with the rocket taking off at around 500 MPH. Shuster believes if Mike blacked out, it could very well explain why he never deployed his backup chute. The timing for deploying the backup chutes was also critical ... Mike would have had to deploy the backup before he hit his apex because if he was descending at too high of a speed, it would have ripped a hole in the chute. But, Mike never got the chance. During her 35-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist." Johnson's work included calculating trajectories, launch windows and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the ApolloLunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson as a lead character in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. In 2019, Johnson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Johnson died at a retirement home in Newport News, at age 101. Following her death, Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator, described her as "an American hero" and stated that "her pioneering legacy will never be forgotten."25 February 2020 – Kazuhisa Hashimoto, Japanese video game developer, best known for having created the Konami Code passed away – https://edition.cnn.com/2020/02/26/tech/kazuhisa-hashimoto-konami-code-dead/index.htmlHashimoto is best known for inventing the ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A hack found in multiple video games that has become a geek touchstone in the gaming community. The cheat code gives you different perks, depending on the game. Hashimoto had inadvertently created it while bringing the arcade version of Gradius to the NES in 1986. Hashimoto knew the arcade version of the game was hard and he would likely not finish it, so he added a sequence of button presses that he could easily remember that gave the ship he controlled in the game the full range of power-ups so that he could easily complete the game for in-house testing purposes. He had intended to remove the programming code for that sequence before the game was shipped, but the game had shipped with the code included. Since then, the Konami code is not only used across other video games from other developers and publishers in similar manners, but as Easter eggs in other forms of media. His death reported by both Konami and by Hashimoto's friend Yuji Takenouchi , a composer and video game sound designer, who tweeted that the code creator died.22 February 2020 – 81 year old man became the oldest man to sail around the world - https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-22/bill-hatfield-oldest-person-to-sail-solo-around-the-world/11991436?fbclid=IwAR0r50t6ZI5eHnBuMxqkmgfPTlUiarwhHzVFFPZo5OrKRR4aI95ezGw6Ll0After four attempts, Bill Hatfield has become the oldest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world. The 81-year-old completed his eight-month journey on Saturday morning, sailing into The Spit on the Gold Coast in his 38-foot yacht L'Eau Commotion. The former fisherman from Bundaberg said he'd been dreaming of this achievement since he was seven years old. Mr Hatfield said he lived on strict rations while at sea. "For fresh water I had a desalinator that pumps through a membrane, and my daily diet was a third of a tin of beans, a tin of tuna, 100 grams of rice and flour and oats, and 150 grams of milk powder." The achievement is all the more impressive considering he sailed west, battling against the prevailing winds and currents.22 February 2020 – Michael Hughes popularly known as "Mad" Mike Hughes passed away - https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-22/bill-hatfield-oldest-person-to-sail-solo-around-the-world/11991436?fbclid=IwAR0r50t6ZI5eHnBuMxqkmgfPTlUiarwhHzVFFPZo5OrKRR4aI95ezGw6Ll0Hughes, a self-styled daredevil, flat-Earth theorist and limousine-jumping stuntman, died Saturday when his crudely built contraption propelled him on a column of steam, spiraled through the air and cratered into the sagebrush. The rocket’s green parachute tore away moments after takeoff, sending the crowd of 50 or so people into a panic. In March 2018, Mr Hughes propelled himself almost 600m into the air before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert. After professing his belief in a flat Earth later that year, Hughes gained support within the flat-Earth community. His post-flat-Earth fundraising campaign made its $7,875 goal. He had said he intended to make multiple rocket journeys, culminating in a flight to outer space, where he believed he would be able to take a picture of the entire Earth as a flat disc. He died in Barstow, California at the age of 64.Remembrances27 February 1887 – Alexander Borodin -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_BorodinAlexander Porfiryevich Borodin, Russian chemist and Romantic musical composer of Georgian ancestry. He was one of the prominent 19th-century composers known as "The Mighty Handful", a group dedicated to producing a uniquely Russian kind of classical music, rather than imitating earlier Western European models. A doctor and chemist by profession, Borodin made important early contributions to organic chemistry. Although he is presently known better as a composer, during his lifetime, he regarded medicine and science as his primary occupations, only practising music and composition in his spare time or when he was ill. As a chemist, Borodin is known best for his work concerning organic synthesis, including being among the first chemists to demonstrate nucleophilic substitution, as well as being the co-discoverer of the aldol reaction. Borodin was a promoter of education in Russia and founded the School of Medicine for Women in Saint Petersburg, where he taught until 1885. He died from heart attack at the age of 54 in Saint Petersburg.27 February 1936 – Ivan Pavlov - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_PavlovRussian physiologist known primarily for his work in classical conditioning. Inspired by the progressive ideas which D. I. Pisarev, the most eminent of the Russian literary critics of the 1860s, and I. M. Sechenov, the father of Russian physiology, were spreading, Pavlov abandoned his religious career and devoted his life to science. Pavlov won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1904, becoming the first Russian Nobel laureate. Pavlov's principles of classical conditioning have been found to operate across a variety of behavior therapies and in experimental and clinical settings, such as educational classrooms and even reducing phobias with systematic desensitization. Pavlov also contributed to many areas of physiology and neurological sciences. Most of his work involved research in temperament, conditioning and involuntary reflex actions.
