Tonight's Jazz Feature is a fine album that never saw the light of day until the early 80's despite being recorded in August 1963. It was the first album by trumpeter Richard "Blue" Mitchell for Blue Note Records. It was given a catalogue number and advertised in the Blue Note brochure but never released. It's a fine date with Blue on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone. Joe also did most of the arrangements on this date as well. Leo Wright is here on alto saxophone, Herbie Hancock is on piano, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks is on drums. Two standards and four original tunes make up this fine date. It simply got lost in the shuffle but finally was issued after research into the Blue Note files. It's a fine and enjoyable date with some solid playing by all. Enjoy "Step Lightly" as tonight's Jazz Feature.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is a very fine album by boss trumpeter Blue Mitchell. Mitchell was a mainstay in pianist Horace Silver's Quintet for 4 1/2 years and grew to maturity in that band. His style is devoid of showy pyrotechnics but with a sharp precise tones and a lyrical melodic concept. He's one of the few trumpeters who could sustain interest for a whole album without another horn like a saxophone. Blue is ideally paired here with piano great Wynton Kelly and they are perfect for one another and reflect the pure joy of making music. Blue and Wynton are backed superbly by bassist Sam Jones and drummer Roy Brooks. The tunes are standards and a few original compositions by Blue and others. This is one of the most enjoyable albums as it's easy on the ears. Blue's Moods...tonight's Jazz Feature.

Hello friends, thanks for checking out our latest session of the Diffusion Tapes. This time around we had the opportunity to catch up with our friend, Carol Golemboski. Golemboski is a photographer and is a Professor of Photography at the University of Colorado Denver. Carol Golemboski uses antiquated objects as metaphors in carefully staged scenes. In her creative process, she implements the use of black and white film and darkroom printing, combining photography, drawing, and photograms in ambiguous and provocative ways.In 2016, she published a book called Psychometry. She's won numerous awards, and shown her work all over the place. Carol is a photo magician. We're big fans of Carol and hope you enjoy our conversation with her. Tonight's Jazz Feature honors the late, great Les McCann who passed away December 29,2023 at age 88. This fine album featuring pianist McCann's working trio with bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Ron Jefferson was called "Les McCann LTD". McCann had been appearing at New York's Village Gate with the LTD and recording for his label Pacific Jazz but this was a one-night only get together with very limited rehearsal with three of McCann's favorite horn players including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, and the great tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and the lesser known Frank Haynes. All six compositions are by McCann and reflect his talents as a writer. This is one fine way to honor a musician that was loved by just about everyone. Les McCann in New York is tonight's Jazz Feature.

To byli dva černoši a spolu jsme hráli asi 20 let. No a občas jsme se spolu ožrali, mudrovali jsme a najednou Eddie mi říká: „You play like us.“ A já říkám: „Jako jak to myslíš, „jako my“?“ – „No jako my, my černý.“ A víš, jak to vzniklo? Já jsem nevěděl, že Clifford a Blue Mitchell byli černý, protože to bylo z rádia,“ říká jazzman Laco Déczi v rozhovoru pro pořad Rada starších. 1. díl, 27.08.2022, www.RadioUniversum.cz

As Branch Rickey said,"Luck Is The Residue of Design." If that's the case then this host walked ass backwards into Lucky Thompsonville exploring the players who created regional music in this country prior to full interconnection. Cosmic Cowboys who played with Hugh Masekela, Blue Mitchell, Dave Brubeck, Cleveland Eaton, Donald Duck Dunn, James Brown, Randy Weston, Allah Raka and Bill Monroe. These cats were street scholars coming out of heterogeneous neighborhoods with Jewish families bordering on Italian Neighborhoods which bordered on the Black Neighborhoods where the messages of Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Wilson Pickett OC Smith and Johnny Nash permeated elaborate high school bands, opportunities in burgeoning studio scenes, game shows, commercials, strip clubs, 2nd cities intermeshing live stand up by Alan Arkin, followed by improvisation from the ghost opera in a brave new world where I lead a life, you lead a life and constant creation is paramount to further evolution as a human being. My guest figured this out early in his career deftly navigating relationships with Blue Eyed Soul Singers and Tripped out Drummers who swung the band to wash away the dust of everyday life. That was the purpose of the live music event. When there was light, a middle class and cats who wanted to be links in the chain for younger generations of musicians who were looking to be the straw that stirred the drink - maybe it was a sissy drink concocted by the late great Herb Wong or a beer with two shots of Bourbon in it made famous by Butterfield and Bishop playing all night gigs on the South side of Chicago. Or even better late night care packages from Bob Krasnow and Tommy LiPuma who knew they were dealing with crazed hipsters like my guest who has continued to be resourceful- using what he has around him, not in excess but rather letting the music come through him. Like a wise man once told me "you don't chose music it chooses you." Ben Sidran welcome back to the JFS

Bova Land In Bova Land there are prisms of colors rays of Hammond organs with deep purple gel tabs going off a cliff in super funk rock jazz amalgamations. He comes from Old Greenwich, CT where the echoes of Clifford Brown and Blue Mitchell resonated deep inside Bova Land. Soon the man from Bova land went flying to an island of fusion mixing traditional classical instruments in a blues based setting with odd metered songs leaning on his B-3 while the drums of Bill Bacon swirl within the whispering pines of the Vermont hideaways and New England festival my guest has played in. He is a Grammy award winning keyboardist, composer, arranger and record producer but for this host my guest came from off the grid because two sages of mine here in Tucson Abbott Taylor a proud sponsor of the JFS and Chuck Goldschmidt grew up in the afore mentioned Ole Greenwich. My guest has reached several musical mountain tops, finding good work because of versatility in an industry that went from analog to digital, acoustic to electric, be-bop to hard bop to post bop to future shock with an ARP chroma burning layers of melodic goo deep inside the soul of my guest. Jeff Bova, welcome to the JFS...

Welcome to Diffusion Tape no. 9 with curator Hamidah Glasgow. Hamidah is a member of Strange Fire Collective and is the Executive Director of the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. We sat down for a nice chat during the 2019 Photolucida Festival in Portland. I'm in awe of this woman and I hope you enjoy hearing some of her personal stories as much as I did. We talked about her youth, her path to art, her exciting and unconventional career path (spoiler alert, there's helicopters), the amazing work she's done at the Center for Fine Art Photography, and her involvement with Strange Fire Collective. The only thing I think we missed talking about is our mutual love of good bourbon… maybe next time.Recorded April 28th, 2019, All conversations are recorded face-to-face. Tenor Saxophonist Tina Brooks:"Back To The Tracks"

Harold Floyd "Tina" Brooks occupies a place in Jazz History as being a great and distinctive voice of the tenor saxophone who had a lot of bad luck, no real fame and an early death. One very sad lifetime but now that he is long gone, his artistry is acknowledged by all. Of his 4 Blue Note dates under his own name only one was issued. Now everything he recorded as a leader and sideman is now out and available. He died in 1974 at age 42 but his reputation was revitalized when all of his albums were unearthed and released in the early 1980s on LP and CD and in box sets. This is one of his "unreleased" albums. His third for Blue Note and it's a great one. It features Tina (pronounced "Ty-na") on tenor saxophone leading trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor plus on one tune a cameo appearance by alto saxophone master Jackie McLean. Brooks contributes three tunes and two more obscure standards complete the date. The standard tunes are "For Heavens Sake" and "The Ruby and The Pearl". The album is called "Back To The Tracks" and it was given a matrix number and advertised in Jazz publications but never issued. The story of brooks' life. Check it out tonight.

This Jazz Feature is tonight's last one for January as we have looked back to the year 1959 and all the great Jazz classics that were recorded that year, 60 years ago. There will be two more months this year devoted to looking at 1959 but that's for later. Tonight it's pianist/composer Horace Silver and his Quintet and Trio. Silver had formed his first band in 1956 and began recording usually two albums per year for Blue Note of his own tunes. The personnel varied but the instrumentation was always trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, bass and drums. By 1958 the personnel had stabilized and Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook were the horns, trumpet and tenor saxophone respectively. Eugene Taylor was on bass and a young Louis Hayes was on drums. This album called "Blowin The Blues Away" was exceptionally good....great if you will! The energy and the cohesiveness is very evident and the music has a relaxed intensity. The Quintet tracks are superb as are the two Trio tracks with just Horace, bass and drums. "Blowin' The Blues Away" will work for you, check it out tonight!

Tenor Saxophone Master Johnny Griffin: "The Little Giant"

Tonight'd Jazz Feature beams the spotlight on Johnny Griffin, one of the foremost masters of the tenor saxophone. Hard hitting, fast, and passionate, Griffin was not one you fooled with as he could outplay just about anybody. This album is one of his best as it features a well-rehearsed sextet with fresh compositions by a colleague of Johnny's, pianist/composer/arranger Norman Simmons. They both were from Chicago and went to school together. Simmons brings some very fresh sounds to the date here as he arranged all the tunes and wrote 3 fine tunes. Johnny picked Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. "The Little Giant" remains one of Johnny's most iconic albums. Hard hitting Jazz from the Windy City!

Alto Saxophone Master Jackie McLean: "Capuchin Swing"

CiTR -- The Jazz Show

Continuing in The Jazz Show's series of underrated recordings when they were first reviewed, this one is the most surprising as it is considered one of this artist's best and best loved dates. Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's third album for Blue Note called "Capuchin Swing" is on tap tonight. Jackie McLean's Blue Note period is considered his best as he was now a mature artist rather that a "promising young talent". Capuchin Swing, named for the McLean Family's pet monkey was Jackie's third for Blue Note and deserved a far better treatment from the "esteemed" Jazz critics. Jackie is in full force here with a full bodied sound and some new ideas. Hid front line partner is the great trumpeter Blue Mitchell, who matured fast by working steadily with pianist Horace Silver's Quintet. Walter Bishop Jr. had been off the scene for a few years but was welcomed back on this date by Jackie and delivered two fine compositions and a trio track all to himself. Bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor can't be beat and are perfect. Aside from Bishop's tunes, Jackie McLean wrote three new ones for this date including the title track. This is one of McLean's finest dates and the critic's that greeted it with disdain be damned!
