Sidney Gottlieb was one of the CIA's star chemists during the Cold War. As head of MKUltra, he ran a brazen—and deadly—program aimed at mind control. Gottlieb and fellow scientists tried to keep the work secret by destroying files, but historian John Lisle has new details from the six boxes that remained untouched. He shares insights and reflections straight from the mouths of MKUltra's perpetrators and victims. The prevailing narrative around these games is that they're all terrible, but that's simply not true. There was a bunch of talented individuals working at Gottlieb at this time, making some very interesting games on extremely tight deadlines, with few resources and we wanted to highlight their talents and work. You may know these games by their pointy boy flippers, or their killer custom music compositions, but we hope that after listening to this episode, you will find a new appreciation for Gottlieb's last dance era.But if you're new and don't know, we are adults and freely use adult language to express our enthusiasm. Howard Gottlieb started Read-A-Thon in 2012 as a reading-based fundraising platform that helped students raise money while boosting education. Their easy platform and simple fundraising approach created amazing results. The Read-a-Thon business grew steadily and profitably without any outside funding. Read-A-Thon helped over 4000 schools and students raise over $30 million in donations. Their platform has tracked over 30 billion reading minutes by students who have used it to earn donations. Read-A-Thon was successfully acquired by private equity investors in early 2023 for an undisclosed amount. The business has continued to grow and expand with a new CEO and key executives, with Howard on the board as an advisor and now a minority investor in the company. Quote from Howard Gottlieb, founder of Read-A-Thon “I have been very blessed and very lucky in my journey with the success of Read-A-Thon. Everyone should realize that and have some humility. “If you succeed at the game, you can be the smartest guy or the smartest woman with the most brilliant idea, but it still will take 50% or more luck for everything to align correctly to succeed. Just realize that. It takes a lot of good fortune. “At Read-A-Thon, our lucky moment was COVID because online fundraising was only in its infancy. When COVID hit and schools were out, Read-A-Thon was almost the only viable option. Our growth went from 40% a year to 100%, then 150% a year. So that was luck after all these years.” Links Howard Gottlieb on LinkedIn Read-A-Thon on LinkedIn Read-A-Thon website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Send us a textHey everyone, welcome back to Conversations with Bizzy! In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with MJ Gottlieb, the co-founder of the Lucid app — a fantastic platform that's creating a safe space for sober individuals to date, connect, and thrive.MJ's been sober for almost 13 years, and hearing his story was so inspiring. We talked about the challenges of dating in recovery, the stigma that still surrounds sobriety, and how Lucid is helping break down those barriers by supporting a community where authenticity and meaningful connections can flourish. What really struck me was MJ's passion for building a space that prioritizes both safety and inclusivity. With over 160,000 members in the sober dating section alone, Lucid is making waves. He shared some amazing success stories of people finding love — it was so heartwarming.I also learned about the complexities of building a dating app (way more than I realized!), especially when it comes to creating a user-friendly experience while keeping the community safe and verified. It's clear MJ and his team are deeply committed to protecting and empowering the sober community. Here's What We Covered:MJ's personal journey with nearly 13 years of sobrietyWhy he started Lucid and how it's supporting the sober community. The rising popularity of niche dating appsHow sobriety stigma can hold people back from finding loveThe importance of safety and verification on the Lucid platformHeartwarming stories of real-life matchesI loved this conversation and I think you will too. Dr. Scott Gottlieb is a poster child for the revolving door between government and industry, having served as head of the FDA under Trump before taking a high-paying gig on the board of Pfizer. Asked recently during a segment on CNN whether the COVID vaccine might be responsible for the dramatic spike in cancers in the past few years, Gottlieb predictably hemmed and hawed and sought to deflect blame away from vaccines. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the rank corruption of the government-industry revolving door. Plus segments on Joe Biden's admission that he's guilty of war crimes and former Congressman and firefighter Curt Weldon's perspective on the government's failures in stopping the LA fires. Also featuring Stef Zamorano and Mike MacRae. Plus a phone call from JD Vance!
