Motörhead - Ace of Spades: The Bar Band That Redefined Metal (Whether They Liked It Or Not)What happens when you salvage a beaten‑up classic from the graveyard? You discover why Motörhead's Ace of Spades remains one of the most influential rock albums of all time—even if Lemmy himself refused to call it metal.Recorded in six weeks during the summer of 1980 and unleashed that October, Ace of Spades is 36 minutes of raw, boogie‑infused rock and roll cranked up to 11. On this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight resurrect this second‑chance poll winner to explore why this album sounds like nothing else—and why that matters. The classic lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor weren't trying to invent metal. They were channeling Chuck Berry, ZZ Top, and Thin Lizzy through a blown amp, adding a danceable swing that inspired everyone from Metallica and Slayer to The Hellacopters and New Bomb Turks. This is the sound of a band that knew exactly what they did well and executed it with surgical precision—even when they got sick of playing “Ace of Spades” every night. If you love early Van Halen, AC/DC, the Ramones, or the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, this episode is for you. We break down how Lemmy's voice became the second guitar, why Eddie Clarke's playing is criminally underrated, and what it means when an album charts everywhere from Sweden to Greece but barely makes a dent in the U.S.Episode Highlights00:00 – Intro: Why this listener‑suggested album almost didn't happen01:38 – The “second chance poll” rescue mission and how Testament won the first round05:42 – Chip's legendary three‑question interview with Lemmy (spoiler: he left to “freshen his drink”)10:09 – Album history: recorded August–September 1980, produced by Vic Maile (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton)14:25 – Lemmy's time in Hawkwind, The Damned, and as Jimi Hendrix's roadie17:29 – (We Are) The Road Crew – Why Lemmy's tribute to roadies still makes crew members cry18:20 – The “Ace of Spades” legend: Why Lemmy sang “eight of spades” for years and nobody noticed19:02 – What Works: Jay breaks down the 70s swing, boogie‑rock energy, and danceable aggression25:14 – Fast and Loose – The ZZ Top‑meets‑Motörhead shuffle that proves this is rock and roll27:07 – How Motörhead influenced thrash, punk, and 90s action rock (Hellacopters, New Bomb Turks)31:54 – The Chase Is Better Than the Catch – The Van Halen‑inspired riff that almost wasn't34:18 – Eddie Clarke's guitar genius: Why “Fast” Eddie is the secret weapon of this album37:58 – What Doesn't Work: Aged lyrics, formulaic moments, and why Lemmy's voice is an acquired taste42:34 – Why fade‑outs are the album's worst decision48:53 – Final Verdicts: Worthy Album, Better EP, or Decent Single?55:37 – Gavin Reed gets credit for suggesting this album (and arguing with Jay about whether it's metal)Keep the Conversation GoingThis album came back from the dead because a listener like you suggested it. Every metalhead knows Motorhead for their all out attack playing style with raunchy lyrics that bounces you from one three minute bludgeoning to the next. When Lemmy Kilmister (gravely vocals and lead bass), "Fast" Eddie Clark (lead guitar), and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor recorded Ace of Spades in 1980, the band were hot. 1979 saw the release of Overkill and Bomber, two beloved classics in their catalog, the latter of which going to #12 in the UK. They were making a racket all around Europe and found themselves with the soft-spoken Vic Maile in Jackson's Studios (not our co-host Action Jackson's studio) to make what would become their biggest selling and defining album. From Ace of Spades to The Hammer there are no brakes, no pauses, no ballads, no turning it down. Whether you're gambling day and night (Ace of Spades), making time with the ladies (Love Me Like a Reptile, Fast and Loose, Jailbait) or doing violence in the street (Shoot You in the Back, The Hammer), Lemmy and the boys crush their way through the lens of rough and rowdy real-life rockers. They give a shout out to the young fans who follow them to follow their dreams (Live to Win) and show their love for the guys who live just as hard as they do (We are) the Road Crew) which creates a sense of family and belonging. Fire, Fire and Dance give the audience a chance to shout along The Chase Is Better Than the Catch sums up Lemmy's livestyle succinctly. Hearing Lemmy sing and not just scream is a testament to Vic Maile and what Fast Eddie does with this guitar as Lemmy is occupying that space with his lead bass is why we feel this is the best Motorhead lineup. They may have actually been able to play a bit more than they show but they are all about straight-ahead, white line fever, drink, smoke, rock hard, screw, and do it all again tomorrow. This album is the quintessential Motorhead record and as it turns 45 we give it its due credit. Maurice – or Melissa, as they sometimes introduced themselves – was 22 when they were shot and killed in Phoenix, Arizona. They were just starting to build a name for themselves as a performer, making it to the regional final for American Idol and acting in dozens of local productions, including The Wiz, Westside Story, and Alice in Wonderland. But the curtain fell too soon…According to friends and family, gender identity was fluid for Maurice. They sometimes presented as femme and went by Melissa, as they did the night of the shooting. This led both LGBTQ+ activists and local officials to fear that maybe this was a hate crime. Maybe… But investigators have struggled to pin down a definitive motive – and the killer. If you have any information at all about the murder of Maurice Dupree Green, also known as Melissa, in March of 2006, please come forward. Dead Groove began as a pandemic collaboration between drummer Fred Aching and bassist/vocalist Holly West has evolved into one of the scene's most promising acts. The band, completed by guitarist Cesar "Cags" Salaverry, brings together decades of professional experience, including West's current role with Zepparella, Salaverry with the Peruvian band Mauser, and Aching's performances with Kings of Thrash alongside David Ellefson, Powerflo and Bullet Boys. The successor to the band's acclaimed self-titled debut album, Rubicon represents a significant evolution in Dead Groove's musical journey. The album's title, referencing the historic point of no return, perfectly captures the band's commitment to pushing their sonic boundaries - Fred the band describe it as presenting “a more polished iteration of Dead Groove's signature sound while maintaining the raw energy fans have come to expect.” Their interpretation of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" demonstrates Dead Groove's artistic vision. Make the necessary preparations, we're talking Motörhead this week...Hilary and Cody try and hang on as they talk about the pure fuel that is Ace of Spades. Lemmy, Fast Eddie, and Philthy Phil were three dudes who knew exactly what they were after, and they pursued those things with great fervor. Ace of Spades is undiluted rock and roll made by a band who were unrepentantly themselves. Motörhead was a freight train, and you either hopped on board, got out of their way, or got run over. Hell yeah. Thanks for listening! In this episode of 'Seeing Them Live,' Charles explores the multifaceted career of Ken Reid, a Boston-based comedian, former punk band member, and podcast host. Ken reflects on his diverse experiences, from his early days in the 90s punk band '30 Seconds Over Tokyo' to his extensive comedy career, which includes two comedy albums and a successful podcast 'TV Guidance Counselor.'He humorously shares early concert anecdotes, including winning tickets through radio contests and memorable shows like the Aerosmith concert and a unique collaboration between David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails. The discussion reveals Ken's passion for live performances and his impact on the entertainment industry over two decades, underscoring his transition from music to comedy and podcasting. Prompted by a story Charles shares where Michael Stipe asked Charles for his Batman shirt after an REM show, Ken and Charles do a deep dive into the portrayal of Joker by Cesar Romero in the original Batman series. They explore Romero's unique take on the character, the impact it had on the show's success, and how it influenced perceptions of the Joker in pop culture. The episode also dives into remarkable concert stories, such as The Descendants' comeback tour and intense punk shows at Boston's Rathskeller, portrayed through vivid recollections of chaotic and energetic performances. Additionally, the hosts and Ken discuss the evolving concert culture, contrasting the violent punk shows of the past with today's more positive festival atmosphere. This engaging narrative captures the spirit of live music and the raw energy of punk rock, while showcasing Ken Reid's journey from punk singer to a successful comedian and podcast host with over 700 episodes of 'TV Guidance Counselor.'
