North Cove, Washington once had the fastest eroding shoreline on the West Coast. For the 72 cranberry farmers who call the area home, the erosion was an existential threat to the local community and economy. That was, until Connie Allen and her late husband David Cottrell got involved. Daily Yonder reporters Claire Carlson and Julia Tilton bring you the story of “Wash Away No More”, a grassroots effort to keep erosion at bay along a rural community's beach.

We cannot all be pastors, preachers, and worship leaders so what does it look like to honor God in our workplace? Today Becky and Brooke are joined by Connie Allen as they discuss what it looks like to be “salt and light” in the marketplace. Connie Allen is a former Hasidic Jewish woman who was born into an ultra-orthodox Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York and raised in the Satmar sect of Judaism. At 21, Connie escaped the community and a marriage she no longer wanted part of and took her young son to start a new life in a society she barely knew.During this period she found exercise and running - young women in her former community were prevented from doing any physical exercise - and found this a source of strength. Now, Connie regularly competes in marathons and ultras and her story is finally being told.In this episode, Jody and David speak to Connie about her strict upbringing, the experiences that led to her deciding to leave the community, how she finally began the process and how fitness and running gave her a focus. This is a fascinating episode with Connie who is amazingly open about her experience. CityBillyHowl'sRockin' Renegades(From Outer Space)With some of the best Rockabilly, Psychobilly & Punk Rock(And Whatever the Alley Cat drags in) The Rockabilly scene in it's genesis was unique. In the early years of the 1950's Rockabilly was alot like Punk - Rockabillies were some of the only, primarily white musicians (and their fans), sometimes Latino as well, who at that time, rejected the Establishment's refusal to play Black music on the radio (or display it on TV) -- which the Status Quo called "Race Music" -- the Rockabillies (sometimes mistakenly called "Greasers" or "Teddy Boys") loved this African-American music so much that they began to form their own bands and cultivated their own DJ's and Juke Joints to highlight Rock & Roll and they didn't call this brilliant music "Race Music" -- they called it what it was and still is -Rock & Roll And their version of Rock & Roll with a Southern accent, with musicians like Rusty York, Hasil Adkins, Laura Lee Perkins, Peanuts Wilson, The Maddox Brothers and Rose, who brought that "Hillbilly Boogie" that would synthesize with Black music and become known as Rockabilly. What would visitors from a distant galaxy think of this new development of sound and communication, would these Little Green Mensch see the Rockabilly musicians & fans as Rockin' Renegades or see them as another step forward in Evolution for mankind that would cause these Music-Loving Martians to climb down from their Flying Saucers and do the Ubangi Stomp ?Featuring all of the best by :Billy Lee Riley (Arkansas)Blackie Jenkins (Mississippi)Buck Trail (Miami)Connie Allen (Tennessee)Dell Vaughan (Flint)Delta 88 (Exeter)Dick Robinson (Boston)Frenzy (Bristol)Gene Vincent (Virginia)Jackie Fautheree (Arkansas)Jackie Lowell (Denver)Jimmy Stewart (Tennessee) Joe Carson (Memphis)Klingonz (Dublin)Koffin Kats (Detroit)Les Vogt (Vancouver)Marcel Bontempi (Kassel)Omar Romero (Los Angeles)Radarmen (San Gabriel Valley)Red Elvises (Los Angeles)Ronnie Dawson (Texas)Rumble Club (Kentucky)Screamin' Jay Hawkins (Cleveland)Stressor (Tula)Terry Dunavan (California)The Barnshakers (Helsinki)The Epileptic Hillbillys (Sheffield)The Guana Batz (Feltham)The Guitaraculas (St. Petersburg)The Krewmen (London)The Magnetix (Tula)The Phenomenauts (Oakland)The Polecats (London)The Radium Cats (Edinburgh)The Raymen (Berlin)The Rezillos (Edinburgh)The Saucer-Mens (Toul)The Spastiks (New York)The Test Pilots (Gothenburg)The Velvetones (Texas)The Wild Tones (Orlando)Three Bad Jacks (Los Angeles)Three Blue Teardrops (Chicago)1.) Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Carol Sanford, author of The Responsible Business and her latest book The Responsible Entrepreneur. She also mentors permaculture practitioners, such as Ethan Roland of Appleseed Permaculture and the Regenesis Group, to connect our work with business world. Along the way today we talk about her background as a university professor, and in business development for large companies. We also discuss metrics, principles, social structures, and many other topics that lead to a way to find the essence of our work. This essence is more than what we do and is bigger than ourselves. We also talk about hierarchy, anarchy, and responsibility, as well as mechanistic systems, the human potential movement, and living systems. This is a fast-paced, dynamic conversation. Relax and hold on, there is a lot of information here and it's worth your time whether or not you currently operate a permaculture or other business because these seeds of thought are useful in finding and refining your niche. You can find Carol and her work at CarolSanford.com. What stood out to me in this conversation is the role we can have as educators and also in finding our own essence. As educators, we can draw out the ideas that guide someone and help them to discover their best practices. What works best for them? What matters? What matters is what we then make time for. Tying that to responsibility can allow leaders to get more done in a way that benefits Earth, themselves, and everyone else. That idea of essence is important to me because it's something I've been working through as your host of this show. What is core to what I do? What is it that is bigger than me that I enjoy so much about this? For a long time I thought it was about the interviews and the information, but the more I do this the more it's about helping you on your path by making connections to different people and resources and using my social capital to do so. I want you to find your niche and I'm here to help you do that and to bring your vision of permaculture and regenerative practices into the world. What is it that you currently work on? What is your essence? I'd love to hear from you. Resources Carol Sanford Living Systems Paradigm Shift John B. Watson - What is Behaviorism?
