As educators, a great deal of our understandings of what learning is has been dominated by behaviourist (check out previous episode with Carol Sanford) and cognitivist ideas, but what if our decisions about how we design learning environments, and think about pedagogy and curriculum had taken in ecological insights of Eleanor Gibson and James Gibson and the branch of psychology known as ecological psychology. So few educators know that such a sub-discipline even exists!Rather than individual students's brains neatly arranged in rows in intentionally informationally impoverished learning environments to compute information and construct meaning in a meaningless world out there, we might have young people as object-environment systems moving around and exploring informationally rich environments to fine-tune their action-perception through multi-sensory relating to the ecologies that they participate in! Sounds like a pretty different world! This episode welcomes Miguel Segundo-Ortín and Vicente Raja, post-doctoral researchers at the MINT Lab, and research fellows at University of Murcia, Spain. A conversation with Laura Ortiz Montemayor, Chief Purpose Officer and co-founder of SVX Mexico, and managing partner at Regenera Ventures Fund, covering the global nature of regeneration exploring what has been happening in Mexico and the rest of the Spanish-speaking countries in LATAM. They hold the key to many of our biodiversity challenges, and many tropical or subtropical commodities are farmed there. What has Laura learnt since the last time we spoke three years ago? Why did she decide to start a $20 million fund focused on rural Mexico and the regenerative transition?Inspired by thinkers like John Fullerton and Carol Sanford, Laura champions soil health and living systems thinking, reframing biodiversity as a critical asset rather than a charity case and critiques profit-driven economic models that overlook natural and social resources, advocating for a shift towards valuing ecosystems' inherent richness. Highlighting Latin America's role in climate resilience, we discuss indigenous wisdom, regional nuances, and innovative finance strategies blending social justice with ecology. As plans emerge for a second fund in Mexico and Colombia, Laura calls for bold investment in nature-based solutions to rejuvenate food systems and biodiversity.---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Support our work:Share itGive a 5-star ratingBuy us a coffee… or a meal! www.Ko-fi.com/regenerativeagriculture----------------------------------------------------More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/laura-ortiz-montemayor.Find our video course on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/course.----------------------------------------------------The above references an opinion and is for information and educational purposes only. In this conversation, we're joined by Trevanna Frost Grenfell. Trevanna is faculty at reNourish Studio as well as working with businesses and organizations independently on developing self-organizing potential through application of living systems thinking and developmental processes to their work. She has a background in nonprofit strategic consulting work, but pivoted to organizational development in her current form when she encountered the work of Carol Sanford in 2016, since she found that the methodology and thinking of this regenerative community was the missing piece in much of her previous organizational work. Layering the rigorous application of the principles or regeneration into the practical application of business and organizational leadership development allows Trevanna to work with teams and organizations to re-inspirit their work and to grow into the next levels of their potential within the systems of our world -- many of which deeply need regeneration and restructuring. Trevanna also has academic training in conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation with international NGO and community partners and graduate study in "Leadership for Sustainability", and she interweaves her business consulting work with her deep personal experiences of wildlife tracking, wilderness guiding, and community-building in connection with the natural world around us. What role can you and your work play in supporting the systems evolutions that are imperative in our current world? In this conversation we discuss changing systems, the “problem” with problem-solving and the need for creativity,  mentorship, the development of human potential, and the evolution of business paradigms from profit-driven to purpose-driven. What does all this mean for the design industry? How can this shift dramatically impact the way you work? A living systems approach to education - A Conversation with Carol Sanford

Carol Sanford (https://carolsanford.com/) is one of the most important thinkers of the last few decades. Like no-one else, her work calls out the deeply damaging effects of Behaviourism on all aspects of our lives, especially learning and education, and advocates for a living systems approach to business, education and community. Carol's latest book, ‘No More Gold Stars: Regenerating Capacity to Think for Ourselves' is in some ways a synthesis of many of her most powerful ideas that she has developed through a lifetime of practice and learning from various indigenous and wisdom traditions. But it also calls out the damaging Behaviourist ideas that have ‘become ubiquitous in all our lives and institutions' and undermined our trust in our abilities to know ourselves and think for ourselves - in all of our various and richly diverse ways. As Tyson Yunkaporta calls it in his amazing foreword to the book, “the sharp and pointy gift that keeps on giving”. As someone living with ALS, Carol's voice can be a little hard to understand at times, so if you would like it you will find a transcript link here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wkr31QCA2MO5y9AynAq0L7Qb1bStlk0muFralyIfBeM/edit?usp=sharing (as well as the automatic transcription on Spotify and some other podcast platforms). As Carol says in Part One: “I use the 7 First Principles of Living Systems to be rigorous in examination, precise in focus and in order to rise up and venerate life. Otherwise, we fool ourself for the sake of our ego.” (https://carolsanford.medium.com/the-regenerative-education-system-and-practice-part-1-23ffcc86326e) Part Two:  Principle 1 - Engage with wholes Principle 2 - Evoke essence Part Three:  Principle 3 - Realise individual potential Principle 4 - Development of mind and beings Principle 5 - Work within nestedness Part Four:  Principle 6 - Laser focus to nodal Principle 7 - Regenerate energy fields (Due to Medium paywall, I am also sharing all of the articles, Parts 1-4, here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12HWRFUbzmWpv4_k7JxLFgn7F99r8UG4o/view?usp=drive_link) Carol refers to Alice Waters, chef and restauranteur who started the Edible Schoolyard movement at Berkeley. https://search.worldcat.org/title/Edible-Schoolyard-:-a-universal-idea/oclc/1280875278 About Carol: For four decades, Carol has worked with great leaders of successful businesses such as Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and Seventh Generation, educating them to develop their people and ensure a continuous stream of innovation that continually deliver extraordinary results. For this episode, Carol Sanford again joins David. She has played a significant role in transforming hundreds of individuals, organisations, companies, and society as a whole. She challenges the idea that most people need to be told precisely how to live and accomplish tasks.  A  damaging belief that has led to a society that does not enable people to think for themselves. Carol explains how each of us can break that negative cycle, retake control, and lead ourselves and society to a better life and world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone has the hardware and software to think for themselves. Society is structured around the belief that people cannot think for themselves. As a result, most of us no longer believe that we can do so. Beating yourself up when you make a mistake wears you down and leads to you giving up and following the crowd. Companies that structure work so there is no hierarchy and build individual capabilities increase revenue by 35 to 65%. Anyone that has a vision has an attachment to doing things one way, which is not healthy. The key aim is to deliver something that is effective and does what the customer needs. Most organisations focus on efficiency instead. BEST MOMENTS ‘We have been conditioned as a society to almost need expertise like a drug.' ‘Thinking is a gift that is so underdeveloped.' ‘When you standardise you don´t innovate.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Previous episode with Carol Sanford - https://omny.fm/shows/people-with-purpose/carol-sanford-indirect-work https://seed-communities.com/conscious-dying/  Website: https://carolsanford.com/  Books: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Carol-Sanford/e/B00427W9JC?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_fkmr0_1&qid=1669032919&sr=8-1-fkmr0   ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. One World in a New World with Carol Sanford - Author, Behavior Disruptor - E.P.-Regenerative Business Summit, 5x TED Speaker An Apocalyptic Chat with host, Zen Benefiel, MA, MBA, Transformational Coach (https://BeTheDream.com) Carol's most recent book, The Regenerative Life: Transform Any Organization, Our Society, and Your Destiny (2020), sets forth her belief that “we need a better theory of change, one that goes beyond the heroic and do-good models and that taps into, develops, and releases the inherent potential of every human being to live in ways that make meaningful contributions to the world.” We are fortunate and honored to have Carol as a guest. She's known as a disruptor across a wide swath of companies and industries and this conversation is an example. Carol begins by noting her newest book about how a deeper look at behaviorism has the capacity for facilitating systemic change. She learned from her Mohawk grandfather that there was no such thing as inner and outer, that there is a whole in which we are embedded. She shares how he affected her life and future work in the regenerative culture. The exploration holds deep wisdom for today. Carol's wisdom comes through in defining the three areas of work in life; developing self leads to being able to attract and work with others on specific goals toward something relevant. She speaks to consciousness being recognizable in a fleeting moment, then it's gone. Regenerating that 'moment' moves us toward further embodiment of consciousness. The conversation floats back and forth in attempting to 'frame' the experience of consciousness in the moment, which Carol regards as very concrete... the observation of observing an activity, for instance. The regenerative capacity in the continued observation is constantly interrupted by distractions in thinking. Consciousness is a moment of observing something of interest. You are invited to take the challenge Carol offers our viewers, though you'll have to listen for it. You will be intrigued with the quest she offers for the moment. She speaks to being undivided, such as the ability to listen to the words being spoken and paying attention to them as they are crafted. Life for humans, in her opinion, is about being as conscious as possible in every moment. One of the best examples of the concept is being able to consider one's intention to function at a certain level with a group and then observing our behavior to see how well we match up on the fly. Carol shares some very important and practical methods in learning how to work together, starting with individual beliefs, listening to others' ideas and then allowing new ideas to emerge from the two. This conversation, as challenging as it appears at times in finding congruence, is one of the most valuable opportunities to observe the process of finding common ground. Carol's sharp intellect and wisdom from experience shines through the challenges with the ALS and her strength. You won't want to miss this apocalyptic chat as she is a gem for the future of humanity. Regenerative has become a buzzword, with companies big and small making commitments to launch regenerative products. But what does regenerative product design actually look like? And how do we measure the impacts of product design and ingredient choices on people and our planet?  This week, we discuss this and more with Ethan Soloviev, farmer and chief innovation officer at HowGood, a food sustainability rating company. His work with international retailers and CPG brands combines on-the-ground agricultural expertise in 34 countries with sustainability-driven market insights. Ethan has developed environmental and social impact metrics for analysis of more than 3,000 brands, including Ahold-Delhaize, Walmart and Danone. He regularly presents on Regenerative Agriculture and Regenerative Business at conferences around the world, and is the author of “Regenerative Enterprise: Optimizing for Multi-Capital Abundance” and the monthly “Regeneration Newsroom." Sustainability Now - exploring technologies and paradigms to shape a world that works

A positive contrarian and thought provocateur in both business and the regenerative movement, Carol Sanford brings about change by disrupting certainty; and this interview is no exception. By digging deep to unearth and upend underlying assumptions, Carol has changed the essence of work in corporations such as Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and Seventh Generation, making the impossible possible and generating unprecedented results. She speaks of a stellar example with a Colgate plant in South Africa where generations of racial division and prejudice were dismantled by effectively challenging the very concept of race. Contending with a terminal diagnosis of ALS, Carol also shakes up our concept of and relationship with death, displaying tremendous grace and unvarnished candor. I recently got a chance to talk to Carol Sanford about her newest book Indirect Work: A Regenerative Change Theory for Businesses, Communities, Institutions and Humans. Carol Sanford is a consistently recognized disruptor and contrarian working side by side with Fortune 500 and new economy executives in designing and leading systemic business change and design. She is a founder and designer of The Regenerative Business Development Community, as well as best-selling author of several other books including her previous work The Regenerative Life—and a personal favorite for any entrepreneur or corporate leader today, The Regenerative Business: Redesign Work, Cultivate Human Potential, Achieve Extraordinary Outcomes. Her books have won over 15 awards so far and are required reading at leading business and management schools including Harvard, Stanford, Haas Berkeley and MIT. Frankly it wasn't until I read this newest Carol Sanford book that it occurred to me to introduce her work to Systems and Cybernetics listeners. As should be obvious from some of my recent episodes, my current systems questions are oriented around how we can engage systemically at the human systems level—work, life, education, activism, etc. Carol knows how to bring systems thinking to life in her work. Her relationship with systems thinking goes back to her early life and is reflected in approaches to change theory and practices based on: Indigenous ways of living in community and on the planet from across the world Threads that run through wisdom of all lineage teachers across the world Quantum Cosmology about how the universe works on individual, social, and plenary level. Providing methods to break old patterns of working that lead to degenerative outcomes, Indirect Work strongly challenges the validity of pop psychology and the damage it causes to human psyche and soul, ultimately, impacting the quality of our society. After listening to our conversation, listeners will want to take up Carol's challenge to shift their minds to work with counterintuitive transformation consistent with how living systems work. Sometimes I find myself inside a dialogue that deeply meets me where I am and lifts me up to a place with more clarity, more vitality, and more possibility. This episode with Pamela Mang was one of these. Pamela is long-term friend and colleague of past guests Carol Sanford, Joel Glanzberg, Ben Haggard, and Bill Reed. She has been working in the space of regenerative design, resourcing and development for many decades. Co-founder of Regenesis Group, she is co-author (with Ben) of the 2016 book Regenerative Design and Development. She is also part of the faculty that runs The Regenerative Practitioner (TRP) programme. In this dialogue Pamela helps me grok the tetrad of regenerative development that Regenesis works from in relation to my own work on Living Design Process. From this paper which in turn sourced it from Regenesis group. https://youtu.be/UJdnMghawTY Upcoming TRPs in NZ and AU Enrolments for the next Australian programme for TRP are open July 15th - August 19, 2022 and the programme commences on September 7th, 2022. Contact me if you'd like to be connected to Drika, Alana or Lara who are the AU co-hosts. Enrolments for the next New Zealand programme are open July 15th - August 13th and the programme commences on September 2nd, 2022. I am considering enrolling myself so I may see you on the course. Contact me if you'd like to be connected to Lucy-Mary who is the NZ liaison. Quotable Quotes Now for a few things Pamela said that I was moved to write down here: Design should be a vitalising process. It creates new vitality, new energies that can source different orders of health, different orders of understanding and so onPamela Mang Pamela Mang The secret about these frameworks is that they don't replace intuition. They hone itPamela Mang Living Design Process Find out more about the Living Design Process Pamela was resourcing me to look at through the tetrad framework here – the next online course of Living Design Process kicks off August 6th 2022 (why not complete before your TRP and make this a year of next-level learning!).
