Season 10 Ep. 48: On A Quick Note: I cannot believe that the 150-year old University of the Arts in Philadelphia is closed. Here am I referring a young mentee to the college and when I checked, it's closed.Such a staple university focusing on the arts closed abruptly in June 2024 and filed bankruptcy in September 2024. The university closed because its leaders lacked the vision and the passion that would create innovative strategies to sustain the school.First of all no one knows about the school, that's why they suffered from low enrollment, and they were not profitable because they lack the Innovation to create new programs by working with the local niche communities and businesses in Northern liberties Philadelphia that were becoming the fashion and arts capital of the Eastcoast; with young professional New Yorkers moving to Old City and Northern Liberties. Now The Eagles are are dominant team and the Sixers are contemplating building a huge new stadium in Center city. The university could've taken advantage of these opportunities. Their prowess in the arts would have been ideal in helping to:1. develop the area utilizing the school's artists and professors and2. developing programs with the city and the stadium developers that serve to develop artists and designers who'd contribute to the stadium and the transformation of the city into the 21st century.Re-open the school @PhiladelphiaGovAnd return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the US. In 1970, Avon Books published a landmark anthology, “Science Fiction Hall of Fame,” featuring 26 classic short stories that represent landmark tales of the genre. The stories were voted on by the members of the new (at the time, in the late 1960s) organization Science Fiction Writers of America. In this series, I will be joined by a panel of guests to break down these stories and talk about the authors in the book. In this episode, I am joined by Patrick B. That's the reason why Jessica Pichardo chose History as her major, and why she began working in nonprofits and government sectors. After a decade in Child Protective Services, she moved into a higher-education degree in the education field, hoping to make a difference in the lives of Montclair students. In episode 4, we focus on the upcoming 25th annual Mental Health Conference at George Brown College in Toronto and this year's theme, Thriving Together in the Classroom: Creating the Conditions for Student Well-Being.  Author, storyteller, Indigenous academic and conference keynote speaker Carolyn Roberts; dean of the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies, Susan Toews; and director of Student Well-Being and Support, Alex Irwin discuss this year's conference and its focus on teaching, the mental health and well-being of post-secondary students, decolonizing learning and Indigenous resurgence through education. Reflecting on the need for decolonizing and re-storying education, Roberts says: “When Indigenous students step into the classroom, we are being asked to leave a part of who we are at the door, because that's not talked about or shared within those spaces. So we have to leave our indigeneity at the door to come in to learn about something else. And that's not a sustainable thing. And not only for Indigenous students, but for all non white students that are walking into these spaces … We need to make sure that we're having multiple stories from multiple perspectives in our classrooms, so that all of our students can see a piece of them within the work that they're doing.” For online registration, conference fees and information about the February 27, 2025 conference, please click this link.  About today's guests:  Carolyn Roberts uses her voice to support Indigenous resurgence through education. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 50! Today's guest is Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan… she is an author, university faculty member, and former K-8 teacher. She directs the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Center at San Diego State University (SDSU), which raises awareness of issues facing Asian Americans, celebrates APIDA culture, and amplifies APIDA contributions. At SDSU, she also led the Liberal Studies program and co-founded the APIDA Employee Resource Group. Beyond SDSU, Dr. Loh-Hagan is an author. To say she's a  “prolific author” wouldn't do her justice, because she's authored over 400 books on diverse topics that include Asian American heritage, women's issues, and quirky subjects like urban legends and monsters. Some of her notable works include A is for Asian American, The Jade Dragon, and Paper Son: Lee's Journey to America. Her writing also spans multiple series, such as My Itty-Bitty Bio Series, Gods and Goddesses of the Ancient World, and Urban Legends (Don't Read Alone!). In advocacy, she co-leads The Asian American Education Project, which develops curriculum and professional training for K-12 schools to provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of APIDA history. Their work bridges education, literature, and activism, exploring themes from exclusion to acceptance. On their site, they state that “By showcasing the struggles and triumphs of Asian Americans over the course of two centuries, our lesson plans amplify the importance and voices of this growing, integral segment of the U.S. population in building the country into what it is today and can become tomorrow, together as Americans. It is important for all Americans, young and old, to join in on this learning experience.” They helped create the amazing graphic novel Fighting to Belong! written by Amy Chu and Alexander Chang, and illustrated by Louie Chin. Published by Third State Books, the graphic novel was a collaboration between The Asian American Education Project and The Asian American Foundation (TAAF). November 18th, 2022. New York City is at war... with rats. And today, Mayor Eric Adams is set to announce four new pieces of legislation aimed at combating this scurrying problem. Two of these laws will target garbage, the rats' main source of food. If you put trash in places the rats can't get, their population will plummet, and New York will get a major victory in this long-running war. The garbage problem is nothing new for the city. In fact, it's been an issue since its founding almost 400 years ago. Today, we try to understand, how has New York historically tackled its trash? And when did the city become a shining example of sanitation for the entire world? In this episode, I have a profound conversation with visual artist Kelly Joy Ladd, diving deep into her transformative journey of healing and creativity. We explore her traumatic head injury and how it catalyzed a significant shift in her life and art practice, leading her to embrace her spirituality and authenticity fully. ------------------- Ladd‘s work responds to themes of cosmic and creative mysteries, exploring inner and outer space, spiritually, the connection of all things and understanding the universe and our roles and purpose in it. Ladd's Liberal Studies degree from the University of Central Florida allowed her to opportunity to explore the subjects that peaked her curiosity like astronomy, physics and creative writing. During this time, she also discovered eastern philosophies and meditation, which has been a staple and major influence in her life and art practice. Before becoming a full-time artist in 2019, she worked as a Disney World parade performer, music writer for HardRock.com, an editor and prop stylist for Parenting magazine and a freelance craft designer and blogger. All the while, she was developing her own style and unique techniques using paper as her main medium, due to her husband's adverse health reactions to chemicals and paint. In March 2020, Ladd experienced a significant head injury, which greatly affected her vision. Since then, she has been retraining her brain and eyes to refocus and track again. During her recovery when she wasn't able to read, watch TV, or look at phones and computers, Ladd used this time, without outside distractions or influences, to devote her full attention to her art and meditation practices. Her 3-D paper and mixed media work has been exhibited in the Mennello Museum of American Art and the Cummer Museum Art and Gardens. Ladd's intuitive artistic approach aligns her with her influences transcendental artists Hilma af Klint, Agnes Pelton and Emma Kunz. Reflections in Africology: A Journey Towards Afrocentricity Without Dismissing Postmodernism

The NeoLiberal Round

In 2021, I began the Doctoral program in Liberal Studies at Georgetown University, where I completed the Foundations of Liberal Studies. The initial course, DLS 1, explored the history of humanity, beginning with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. While Homer briefly references Egypt and Africa, mentioning an "old man" as a source of stories, many Africologists, such as Professor Kimani Nehusi, author of Person and Personality, critique the omission of Africa's foundational role in the history of civilization. At Georgetown, the course left out any acknowledgment of Africa or ancient Egypt (Kemet) as part of the foundation of Western civilization. After meeting members of the Ausar Auset Society in Philadelphia, conducting an interview with them, and learning about Kemet I realized that my studies were not as accurate or inclusive of Africa's contributions. I embarked on research to uncover sources that place Africa at the foundation of human history, or at least prior to Greek civilization, which itself is influenced by African traditions and culture. Scholars like Dr. Ana Mazama, Chair of the Department of Africology at Temple University and author of The Afrocentric Paradigm, argue that what we know of ancient Egypt has been "bastardized" by the Eurocentric retelling of history, diluting the contributions of Kemet and Africa.I subsequently enrolled in the PhD program at Temple University, where I started courses in Africology and African American History, including African Civilizations, The Afrocentric Paradigm, and a Proseminar in Africology. The Afrocentric paradigm, like the Eurocentric one, begins with a people, place, culture, and the stories that give meaning to their lives, shaping lasting communities and advancing the progression of life. However, when we view history through an Afrocentric lens, the conflict is not merely class-based, as Marx described, but cultural. Afrocentrism challenges Eurocentric notions of humanity's origins, placing Africa at the center, and works to deconstruct and decolonize white supremacy and the idea that Eurocentrism is universal. Afrocentricity emphasizes agency, cultural dissemination, and economic empowerment while rejecting Marxism, postmodernism, and even Black nationalism.I disagree with the claim that postmodernism denies or rejects culture entirely. Instead, postmodernists argue that culture is not divine, natural, or universal, but rather, a reflection of human egos and experiences. So, where do we begin? According to Dr. Nehusi, the question "Who am I?" must start with Africa as the center, which means beginning with Kemet. However, I believe we must first begin with the Ultimate—God. For God is "that which nothing greater can be conceived or imagined," and He has revealed Himself to all humanity, as we are made in His image. In response, humanity creates civilization or culture, shaped by their context and environment. However, cultures—whether African, European, or Chinese—have often been privileged over one another, leading to revolutions or wars that impose and erase. This cultural domination has been particularly evident in the African experience, where European art, history, and values supplanted African ones, leading to what could be described as cultural genocide. Yet, as Dana Berry highlights in Price for Her Pound of Flesh, the African spirit has preserved its history, preventing total annihilation.God's revelations to humanity are not exclusive to any one group, and each culture's response to divine inspiration varies. Yet, why is one narrative privileged over another? Today, I sat with Jermain Reason to begin my reflections on Africology as I continue my journey toward Afrocentricity. Several decades of scholarship have demonstrated that Roman thinkers developed in new and stimulating directions the systems of thought they inherited from the Greeks, and that, taken together, they offer many perspectives that are of philosophical interest in their own right. The Oxford Handbook of Roman Philosophy explores a range of such Roman philosophical perspectives through thirty-four newly commissioned essays. Where Roman philosophy has long been considered a mere extension of Hellenistic systems of thought, this volume moves beyond the search for sources and parallels and situates Roman philosophy in its distinctive cultural context. The Oxford Handbook of Roman Philosophy (Oxford UP,  2023) emphasizes four features of Roman philosophy: aspects of translation, social context, philosophical import, and literary style. The authors adopt an inclusive approach, treating not just systematic thinkers such as Cicero and Augustine, but also poets and historians. Topics covered include ethnicity, cultural identity, literary originality, the environment, Roman philosophical figures, epistemology, and ethics. Myrto Garani is Associate Professor of Latin Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She is the author of Empedocles Redivivus, co-editor with David Konstan of The Philosophizing Muse, and co-editor with A. N. Michalopoulos and S. Papaioannou of Intertextuality in Seneca's Philosophical Writings. David Konstan is Professor of Classics at New York University. He is the author of Friendship in the Classical World, Beauty, In the Orbit of Love, and The Origin of Sin. Gretchen Reydams-Schils is Professor in the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame and holds concurrent appointments in Classics, Philosophy, and Theology. The NeoLiberal Blogs - Violence that seeks to do any type of physical harm towards hurt is a "sin". It's an attack against the highest ethic and command: The right to life/thou shalt not kill! Nowadays, we refer to this break from the will of God as unethical or immoral; in sacred terms, the actors are sinners or using the profanus, amoral. Physical harm is a type of violence that threatens the -sanctity & rights to life. It's an attack against life and The Ultimate (God, Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, I, The Divine, Essence of Life). Therefore no physical violence is acceptable. This extends to the activities of war, brawls, domestic violence, corrupt capitalism or business practices leading to starvation, poverty and death, terrorism, systemic brutality such as murder, aggressive assaults, #policebrutality, #suicide and Suicide bombings, genocide, withholding care or causing the need for care leading to death, and even abortion, which may be seen as thwarting and subverting nature and the progression of life that is Divine. (Note: Sacer v Profanus, the sacred and profane, today means religious or irreligious, sacred or secular to provide a designation based on one's affiliations and beliefs which is part of Liberal Studies Foundations at Georgetown University, exploring the foundations of Knowledge which will be part of Neoliberalism book 3 by Renaldo McKenzie out in 2026).
