Discover Lafayette's sound engineer, Jason Sikora, has a voice many of you are familiar with, as he's participated in our interviews over the past seven years, ensuring a finely-tuned, professional podcast. Jason Sikora pictured with Butch Roussel during a recording of Discover Lafayette Podcast. But many of you may not know his interesting back story, or how he came to live and work in Lafayette LA. A native of Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Jason has a rich collection of memories to share and insights into how rock concerts are orchestrated. Jason's dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, but when Jason and his two brothers were young, the family moved to Hartland, Michigan to be able to escape the city life and its accompanying declining socio-economic factors in the 1980s. Describing Hartland as "basically a truck stop," it was much more. Jason graduated from Hartland High School, playing drums in its marching band and eventually serving as the Hartland Eagles' mascot. Sadly, Jason's younger brother, Kris, died when he was 11 years old, from a blood disorder. Kris' life and death had great meaning, however, as researchers were able to study his condition. Jason stated that today, people with Kris' condition would survive. Upon graduation from high school, Jason hightailed it to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute ("MI"), a college that was known as a 'player's school,' meaning that students were taught the skills to make a sustainable career in the music industry. While many young people could qualify to be a guitar tech based upon their self-taught abilities, Jason credited MI for a valuable education and teaching him guitar repair and cable management. " I started playing guitar in 6th grade, so I had six to seven years of experience with signal flow, how to solder microphones back together. I learned a lot in high school with my band, messing with pedals and guitars and amplifiers. I did learn guitar repair, cable management and how to get tone while in college at MI." Andy Brauer hired Jason right after graduation from MI, to work at his shop that specialized in instrument and musical gear rentals. Jason had the good fortune to work with Faith Hill in his very first gig, being hired to work at Skywalker Ranch to assist in recording track sessions. "I got to hang out with the best musicians in the world for a week: Mike Landau, Dean Parks, Paul Bushnell, and Vinnie Calaiuta are monster players!" Jason also got to witness the regular lives of performers such as Faith Hill, her husband, Tim McGraw, and their children, and realized how fortunate he was to be a part of this experience in the ordinary lives of superstars as the album was being cut. Jason then met Michael Lockwood, a guitarist who hired him to be a touring guitar tech for Aimee Mann, performing sound checks and restringing guitars, ensuring that all would go well during concerts. Jason would continue this type of work for several years, working with greats such as Lisa Marie Presley, Britney Spears, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as other acts during what he calls his 'lost years from 2004 to 2006', such as Hanson, Gerard McMahon, Puddle of Mudd, and the recording of "A Mighty Wind," an album accompanying a movie of the same name, featuring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and many other staples of comedy culture of the time. "The work ethic is very different when you're on the road. You're not allowed to be sick. The show must go on. If there is a half million dollar guarantee and there are 10,000 people out there, your rig has to work. There was always a doctor out there with water, vitamins, and oxygen. You have to do the show. There's no back-up. No one else would know my rig," says Jason Sikora. Asked if he missed traveling on the road for months as a time as a guitar tech,

As a seasoned music bass guitar player with almost 40 years of experience and the host of the Music Matters Podcast, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Rockie Lynne, a talented musician who has overcome adversity to find success in the music industry. In this podcast episode, we'll delve into Lynne's inspiring journey, his new Amazon documentary and latest album, as well as his charitable work supporting the families of fallen service members. Early Life and Music Career Lynne's passion for music began at a young age. After being found in a garbage dumpster and growing up in an orphanage, he was inspired to become a musician when a man played guitar for him at the age of four. Lynne started playing in bands in high school, and later joined the army to attend the Musicians Institute in California. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the talent in the barracks, Lynne persevered and eventually moved to Minnesota, where he started over and sold 150,000 CDs from his car trunk before getting a record deal. He played 321 nights in a big eight by 20 trailer, becoming a draw before meeting with industry executives. Songwriting, Love, and Forgiveness Lynne's approach to songwriting is unique, comparing it to plumbing or throwing darts. His new album features his classic, full-rich voice and great songs. One of the standout tracks is "Heavy Load," which was inspired by a mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The song grapples with the concept of love in the face of unimaginable evil. Finding His Biological Father and the Importance of Male Role Models Lynne discovered his biological father through a DNA test and was able to meet him before his death. This experience had a profound impact on Lynne's sense of belonging and purpose. He also emphasizes the importance of male role models in childhood, citing personal experiences and the impact it had on his life. Charity Work for Troops Lynne founded Tribute to the Troops, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps families of fallen service members. The organization has raised over $1 million and sent 123 children to college whose parents died in service. Lynne's commitment to supporting troops and their families is unwavering, and he encourages others to get involved and donate to this important cause. New Amazon Documentary and Album Lynne's new Amazon documentary and album offer a glimpse into his life and music career. The documentary, which is available on Amazon Prime and PBS stations nationwide, showcases Lynne's journey as a singer-songwriter and the importance of showcasing artists' work. His latest album features his signature voice and songwriting style, with themes of love, forgiveness, and moving on from tragedy. Conclusion Rockie Lynne's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and giving back. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, he has remained committed to his passion for music and his desire to help others. We had the pleasure of interviewing Michael J Woodard over Zoom video!Pop R&B singer-songwriter Michael J Woodard rolls out his intoxicating new single "Ruined" and announces his debut EP, WMJ1. Out Jan 12 on Unsub Records. A gentle rumination on the emotional fallout that follows a breakup, Woodard's latest is a melodic earworm with nuance and insight. It is accompanied by a striking video, which conveys the melancholy and yearning of the lyrics.“Sky is falling, washing over mid-October," he begins over woozy strings. "Maybe next month I'll get over the idea of losing things I'm not supposed to.” Woodard then drives home the complex emotions of moving on at the poignant chorus: “I hate to admit it, but I'm still stuck on grieving and seeing you happy just pulls me deeper.” It's the kind of understated and authentic R&B anthem that evokes a different era.In the accompanying music video, Woodward brilliantly lends imagery to his ideas as multiples of the artist pose against cinematic backdrops including graffiti-covered walls, an abandoned warehouse, and the streets and bridges around the perennially dried up Los Angeles river."This song means so much to me,” the rising artist says. “It really taps into a vulnerable feeling that we may all be familiar with: the feeling of love and losing love. As humans we experience so many glimpses and instances of what it means to be in love and, sometimes, if we lose that love we may not know how to put that feeling into words." Ultimately, Woodard wants the song to promote healing. "I hope it allows people to be vulnerable, to feel, to relate, and to hopefully find joy and a relief to know that someone out there is singing about a familiar part of their journey when it comes to love."Woodard grew up in Philadelphia, singing in church and at the performing arts elementary school he attended. By the time he was 13, he had sung at high-profile events such as the US Open and performed for Barack Obama when the then-president visited Philadelphia. He developed his vocal chops and songwriting acumen, working in the home studio he created and sharing the results online. After high school, Woodard headed to Hollywood to study at Musicians Institute. The newcomer soon found himself in the Top 5 on “American Idol,” where he was championed by Katy Perry and later signed to her Unsub Records label. Since then he has voiced the title character in the Netflix animated musical film and TV series, Arlo The Alligator Boy and focused on releasing new music. Praising Woodard, Atwood Magazine said, “It's a rare treat to find an artist who doesn't attempt to mask their joy for their craft behind mystique or the guise of ‘coolness.'”With "Ruined," Woodard continues to polish and elevate his sound — delivering a track with heart and hooks. We want to hear from you! What is special about this episode for me is that Dan was my private teacher when I attended M.I. (then known as "GIT") in the early 90's. One of the original graduates of the early days of the program at the school, Dan worked alongside legends such as Howard Roberts and Tommy Tedesco and has taught thousands of students in his 45 year career at the school. In this episode Dan shares stories of studying with Pat Martino, how visualization techniques work when learning new material, his record "Before the Sunrise" and much more!Click here for Dan's record "Before the Sunrise"Click here for a video of Dan talking about learning techniques on the guitar.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode of the True Love Knots Podcast, our guest is Paulette McWilliams. She is a highly accomplished vocalist with a career spanning over six decades and has maintained a remarkable presence in the music industry. Beyond her successful singing career, Paulette is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of singers and performers. She has served as a vocal coach for over 30 years, conducting master classes at renowned institutions like the Songwriting School of LA and the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Today, Paulette shares her profound perspective on why God is essential in her life and how the power of music can bring healing to our souls. Standout Quotes: "I am here to just bear witness to the fact that this is who I am. And I want someone who feels that way." [Paulette] "Music is born of love to me, all music, whether you're singing about a breakup or a makeup. All music comes from the soul, comes from God." [Paulette] "Practice who it is you want to be. If you're practicing being very shy all the time, then that's where you're always going to be." [Paulette] Key Takeaways: Life throws challenges your way, and it's okay to feel hurt and question why. But remember, what truly matters is how you respond and what you learn from these experiences. Growth often emerges from adversity. Being true to yourself, even if it means acknowledging your mistakes, is essential. Authenticity paves the way for personal growth and understanding, allowing you to see yourself clearly. Recognize that music is a universal gift that transcends language and cultural barriers. Just like a single song can resonate worldwide, remember that shared experiences through art and expression can unite people. Teach yourself and those around you that change is within your grasp. If you're shy, practice confidence. If you're hesitant, practice courage. The more you embody these traits, the more they become woven into your being. Embrace the unknown with an open heart. Don't let fear hinder your journey towards your goals. By stepping out of your comfort zone and practicing new ways of being, you pave the way for a more fulfilling and expansive life. If they're breathing... count us in.”We like to think of Valley of Grey as your quintessential pop-rock song,” said Bob Dougherty, co-founder of the bandand co-writer of the band's music. “It's a soaring anthem. It's got riveting solos, infectious hooks but enough heavyguitars to make you tingle in your nether regions.”The band has been together for several years and had released 18 songs on their YouTube channel and all streaming platforms before the pandemic put plans to launch their live show on hold. Along with all the world-wide releases and official lyric videos to all the songs, they released an official music video shot at the famous beachesin Malibu with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. Where Are You Tonight, featuring actress Rai Quartley, includes intriguing studio-shot scenes to go along with an enticing story line. Already reaching over half-million views, the video can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUg56nAAJfs. The song has also been in regular rotation on nine national radio stations. The band's catalog, written by Dougherty and Track, was mostly recorded during a period of several years leading up to 2020 at which time Sensaround was gearing up for live performances. Then the pandemic hit, and the strategy, said Bob, was to “just hole myself up seven days a week and practice mychops on rhythm guitar. We felt it would be as practical as it would be commercially-viable adding the singer-songwriter look to the band. A lead singer without an instrument in his hand seemed outdated to us. We saw achance to turn a negative into a positive. It felt as though the universe hit pause on life, so I resolved to come out of itwith a new skill and we felt that the band would make a better impression with the lead singer handling electricrhythm guitar parts.”Since the pandemic ended, “The priority of the last couple of years has been to get the live show tight,” said Alex Track, co-founder, co-writer and drummer of the band. “It's a blessing to be in a band with such incredible players. It's a gift, not only to be in a band with zero egos, but to have the members be such great friends and great people ingeneral. If this project was any more fun, I wouldn't be able to stand it.”Bob got into music and guitar through a youthful infatuation with U2, REM and Oasis, but didn't become an actual performer until he left a career in video editing and was hired onto the Disney Wonder Cruise ship. After that, he tookthe job of entertainer at the Club Med vacation village in Cancun, which involved physical comedy but also solo acoustic guitar sets at the main bar. “It sharpened my skills and flamed my passion for music,” he said. Club Med is where he met Alex, and that introduction was the genesis of Sensaround. With world-renowned symphony and choral conductor Gerhard Track and Beethoven Piano Competition winnerMicaela Maihart-Track as parents, it was no surprise that Alex Track grew up performing in a number of orchestras, choirs and bands. Taking first place at the Tri-State Music Festival piano competition, Track's passion turned todrums and percussion. Graduating with honors with a Masters of Music Degree from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, Alex went on to become CEO of Track Entertainment in Los Angeles. Afterattending MIT in Hollywood, Track has been involved in all aspects of the music industry in Los Angeles from scoring pictures to composing, arranging, recording, mixing, mastering and producing records. Track's exceptional skills wererecognized when he won a Grammy Award in 2007. “My grandfather was a very popular entertainer. The Bob Hopeof Europe, if you will and my father was an expert at winning crowds over with intermittent humor during breaksbetween classical pieces at concerts he conducted throughout his career. Taking advantage of Bob's natural sense ofhumor and likability, it's heart-warming for me to see that spirit of entertainment included in our show. For my part, it feels like we're carrying on a family tradition.”Nate Gignac, guitar and vocals, won many competitions at piano festivals in Canada, then, according to his bio, as a teenager “picked up guitar and never looked back.” He studied at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. He has touredwith various rock bands over most of the United States and Mexico.Max Pierce, bass and vocals, has 20 years' experience as a professional bass player, playing in live band situations, doing session work at recording studios, and performing in musical theater. He performs for the Los Angeles theatercompany For The Record, and music that he wrote has been featured on the NBC show Parenthood. The band sums up all that passion, talent, skill and experience in its official bio. Their music, it says, comes “from aplace of earnest, raw sincerity for people who long for the return of real instruments and hand-carved music that is meant to inspire and take the listener through every possible emotion.”As far as the name of the band is concerned, Bob and Alex came up with a plan to write down names that would fit the band. Bob had already written down dozens of names while Alex hadn't come up with one. One day, out of theblue, Alex excitedly told Bob that he had a name for the band. His first and only name for the list, but explained that he saw the name in a dream, up in lights like on a big venue. Alex immediately researched the name. The name “Sensurround” was the patented name for the surround sound system built to shake seats in a movie theater back inthe day. When articles were written on the subject, people inadvertently spelled it “Sensaround.” The slogan was: Sound so powerful that you not only hear it, you feel it. Being that's how Alex felt the listener will feel when hearingtheir music, the name made “sense”. Randomly seeing it in a dream, that vividly, they didn't want to challenge fate. Sensaround was born. The focus now is on live performances. They made their debut in May this year and have two more shows scheduled for September on the L.A. club venue circuit: September 7th at The Universal Bar and Grill on Lankershim Blvd. in Universal City and September 22nd at The Mint on Pico Blvd. in Mid City Los Angeles. They are also working out the details to perform at other famous LA venues, the Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy Theatre, the Troubadour and The Viper Room to start. “We have a strong catalogue,” said Bob. “We've got over 20 songs thatare radio ready. The hope is to build a fan base by playing out consistently. First and foremost, it will be interesting to see the response of a crowd at a live venue. I am excited to find out if they will be throwing their underwear on stageor fire rotten tomatoes at us.”Connect with Sensaround on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.“Valley Of Grey,” Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/track/6j7sQM4pO8iYK92TlS0Jw8?si=81c823897f044c45&nd=1“

“Jazz was the first music that I ever heard. It was introduced to me by my Dad who always played jazz around the house. He regularly sat me down and told me to listen closely to the music, that jazz was life.” Her beloved father passed away when she was 11. “The last time I saw him, he was at the hospital, had me driven in, and he told me that he wanted me to promise him something. He wanted me to promise him that I would sing jazz after I became a woman. Years passed, life went on, and I became involved in performing and recording r&b. But when I was completing the second CD in 2013, I kept on thinking about my last conversation with my Dad. It was as if he was reminding me about my promise. I decided that I would see if I had what it took to sing jazz.” Douye' has since worked very hard at finding her own place in the jazz world. Rather than doing it halfway or merely copying the great jazz singers of the past, she was determined to study hard, learn a countless number of songs, and sing jazz in her own way. She paid close attention to the reactions of the audience and the musicians when she appeared at jazz jams at the World Stage in Los Angeles. “If I did not sound any good, they would certainly tell me! I gained the courage to give it a real try after getting some confirmation from the jazz crowd that I could do this.” Daddy Said So features Douye' singing a set of classic jazz standards. Her voice is attractive, warm, and quietly emotional, has a solid sense of swing, and she clearly has a deep understanding of the lyrics. It is an awe-inspiring jazz debut for the up-and-coming singer. Rather than utilize the same group of musicians on each selection, a wide variety of brilliant jazz artists make memorable appearances throughout the release. Douye' originally made demos of the songs that she planned to record, sent them to many of her favorite musicians, and happily discovered that every artist was interested in being on her project. Douye' recorded “Nature Boy” as a duet with the immortal bassist Ron Carter. “It was funny. He suggested that we meet for the session at 11. I said, ‘Alright but I would be there at 10:30.' Ron Carter replied that he would make it by 10:30 too. I arrived at the studio at 10:17 and he was already there! I think we were finished with ‘Nature Boy' before 11.” “Mood Indigo” and “I Loves You Porgy” were recorded with veteran pianist Kenny Barron's trio. “But Beautiful” and “All The Things You Are” feature a talented Nigerian tenor-saxophonist Zem Audu and pianist Benito Gonzalez. Douye' originally recorded “Lush Life” and “Sophisticated Lady” as duets with her friend the late pianist Joel Scott. Later, tasteful bass and drum parts were added but Douye' kept Scott's beautiful accompaniment intact. “Round Midnight” and “In A Sentimental Mood” was performed with pianist-arranger John Beasley and a few of Los Angeles' top jazz players (saxophonist Bob Sheppard, bassist John Clayton, and drummer Roy McCurdy). Check out Douye's deep-toned vocal on “' Round Midnight” and Beasley's emulation of Duke Ellington's piano playing on “In A Sentimental Mood” from Duke's famous collaboration with John Coltrane. Every performance has its special moments. The great guitarist Russell Malone not only arranged “Body And Soul” but organized a group that included trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and drummer Willie Jones III. “Autumn Leaves” (arranged by Angelo Metz as was “Besame Mucho”)) and “Someone To Watch Over Me” (arranged by Phil Small and produced by Metz) find Douye' joined by the Kim Richmond Orchestra while the warm tenor-sax of Justo Almario co-stars on “Besame Mucho.” Also included on Daddy Said So is a very spirited rendition of “Summertime” that was recorded in New York with a band of young Cuban Americans led by drummer-arranger Zack O'Farrill (the 21-year-old son of Arturo O'Farrill). “I'm so grateful,” says Douye'. “While it took time to coordinate everyone's schedules, each session came together very quickly. It was so enjoyable that it confirmed my decision to sing jazz.” Douye' was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and regularly spent her summers in England. She was in a church choir in Africa when she was quite young and often sang along with recordings from her father's record collection. Douye also wrote poems and songs as she grew up. Early on she knew that singing was going to be her lifelong love. In her pursuit of singing, she moved to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute as a vocal major. While attending school, she met songwriter Terry Shaddick who had composed the giant hit “Physical” for Olivia-Newton John. Shaddick and Douye' soon formed a musical partnership, writing all of the fresh new music for her first two albums Journey and So Much Love. During this era, Douye' performed classic r&b inspired by Anita Baker, Sam Cooke, Sade, Regina Belle, Rachelle Ferrell, and other major soul singers. In this episode, Douye shares her background, education, and musical journey.

This week we are wrapping up season 5 with two amazing guests! I'm talking with Eric Knight & Ritch Esra of MUBUTV (Music Business Television) in Los Angeles, CA. These guys have a combined goldmine of knowledge and advice that covers the whole gambit of the music industry. Ritch worked at two record labels; A&M in radio promotion and Arista in A&R where he had the privilege of working with the legendary Clive Davis who has signed some of the biggest artists in the world including Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson. Eric has opened for such acts as KISS, Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith and Kid Rock. He started his own artist management company Persistent Management™ not only for his own career as an artist but also to create a vehicle for other artists to achieve their artistic vision and integrity. Their MUBUTV Insider Series and Insider podcast is similar to my YOU CAN Make A Living In The Music Industry podcast as they have guests from all over the industry sharing knowledge that will help you make a living in music no matter what area you are pursuing. We are a companion series to each other and I can't recommend them enough to check out (after you listen to this episode of course!) We are discussing the importance of being educated about your chosen career path. Why you no longer need a record deal to be successful. Why you have to be a jack of all trades AND a master of all. Plus, learning who your audience is, finding where they are, then going after them. And we discuss how MUBUTV's goal is to educate, empower and engage your music career. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com.  In this episode we discuss: *The importance of internships. *The Music Business Registry. *Become educated about your chosen career path. *MUBUTV (Music Business Television) is a companion type podcast to YOU CAN Make A Living In The Music Industry. *How to listen to songs for A&R. *The criteria of the kind of artists today has changed because of a copy model (CDs, tapes, etc.) to an access model (streaming for free). *Artists signings today are not just about who is successful or about their music. Today its about who they are, where are they from, what do they represent? What are their values?  *You no longer need a record deal to be successful. *The real challenge today is the ability to get someone's attention. *You must find an audience for your music before A&R or labels will put time, energy and effort   into you. *We are no longer just artists. We are business leaders. *A&R was a faith based business. That model changed with technology. *Today technology allows us to ask if there is a market for my music without A&R. *Who is my audience? *If you don't know who your audience is at the beginning of your career, start making a serious commitment to learning who they are. *Being an artist who has been signed to a label and also an indie. *Find where your niche is, that narrow world where you can build your career. *Major labels are amplifiers to a career. *Adapting is the key. *A booking agent won't sign you as an indie unless you can sell at least 300-500 seats on your own. *You have to be a jack of all trades and a master of all. *Learning who your audience is, finding where they are and going after them. *The more you know, the more valuable you become to companies. *MUBUTV's goal is to educate, empower and engage your music career. *Study the lives of other successful people in the industry. *www.mubutv.com *www.youtube.com/mubutv   BIO: Ritch Esra | Co-Founder I started my career in 1978 at Record World, a leading trade magazine and have spent my entire career in this industry.  From 1980 - 1987 I worked at two record labels; A&M in radio promotion and Arista in A&R where I had the privilege of working with the legendary Clive Davis. Throughout my career, I have worked on both the performing and business sides of the music industry. Besides being an accomplished musician with a strong D.I.Y. work ethic, I started my own artist management company Persistent Management™ not only for my own career as an artist but also to create a vehicle for other artists to achieve their artistic vision and integrity. My band Rock act Disciples of Babylon has put everything I've learned throughout my career to the test in order to build a self sustaining career that is totally autonomous and completely independent.   My current and most ambitious project, Symbiotic Nation™ is a new entertainment company startup with a mission to reinvent the entertainment industry completely. “Think Google of the new entertainment industry.” I am a voting member to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Science [NARAS] and The Latin Recording Academy [LARAS] Grammy Awards. After working as an A&R for a label under Sony Music, Isabella uses industry experience coupled with cutting-edge strategies to help musicians monetize their music careers, attract their loyal fan base, and reach the levels of success they desire. During her time as an A&R she discovered that as long as an artist knows social media marketing and e-commerce strategies, they can create wildly profitable careers without signing record deals. Shortly after, Isabella set off to learn digital marketing and invested close to six-figures in coaches and consultants to accelerate her knowledge and her growth. In the meantime, she worked for an award-winning influencer marketing agency where she had the opportunity to work with multiple Fortune 500 brands including but not limited to Snap, Google, Bud Light, United Healthcare, and more. She also managed two TikTok accounts for Sony Music LATAM, and so much more! Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum

My name is Ben Hilzinger and this week's guest is Lina Anderberg. I found out about Lina through her Instagram (@linaanderberg) and I was immediately blown away. She's originally from Sweden, but moved to LA to attend Musicians Institute right before all of the world shut down. It was quite the frustrating story dealing with all that and she is currently in Stockholm waiting for her opportunity to get back to the states. In the meantime, I was really excited to pick her brain because she has an incredible pocket and, at the top of the show, I oogle over her hand technique. I actually had to cut some of it out because I just wouldn't move on, but I guarantee Lina is going to be playing with some amazing artists in the future and I can't wait to see her career continue to flourish. Please enjoy my conversation with Lina Anderberg on the top influences that made her into the drummer she is today. Cheeerrrssss. Nat Kendall is a San Francisco-based Bhakti yoga teacher and musician who hosts weekly classes in the Bay Area, annual retreats and has produced numerous albums with different collaborators, most recently an acoustic collection called “My Friend."Raised in Bozeman, Montana, Nat learned guitar, keys and percussion instruments early on and attended the Musicians Institute of Los Angeles followed by the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He then moved to San Francisco at the age of 30, working as an audio producer and creative director for Pandora Internet Radio before he discovered the path of yoga and began his teaching journey with Rusty Wells and Janet Stone. This is a deeply personal conversation about truth, vulnerability, commitment to self love, and life as the ultimate practice of yogic philosophy. We talk about seeing our teachers as humans, not people who are perfected beings or enlightened masters. He openly shares insight into how his yoga practice helps him remain humble in partnership, the incredible gift of parents who always told him to 'Keep Going' no matter what project or hobby he was pursuing, and the long and winding path of how he navigated a 'Dark Night of the Soul' period in his twenties. We get plenty of laughs, though, as he recounts his time playing in punk and hip hop bands, a path that ultimately led him to using music as an expression of devotion rather than ego.You can hear the buzz of the fans in the heat of the evening, the clink of people setting down mugs of tea between sips. Part II of my conversation with Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila. We explore more reasons why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows in 2020. Some of the topics we discuss include:Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? Are they just not interested, or are there more nefarious reasons for the lack of women playing drums? Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors?Finding women subs—what problems have they had with recruitment and/or finding qualified candidates? Are women reaching out to them for advice on how to do what they do?What can we do to bring more women into the collective of drummers? Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. For 20 years, she worked with NYC rockers Antigone Rising who toured relentlessly, made numerous TV appearances, and served as cultural ambassadors to Israel, Palestine, and Vietnam. She's worked with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox 20) as a member of his “RT Quartet.”She has been featured in Modern Drummer, Drum! and Sticks ‘n' Skins, a photography book about the drumming community. Just over two years ago, Dena made the switch to Broadway after landing the chair for Head Over Heels featuring the music of the Go-Gos. Since then, she has also held the chair for Kristin Chenoweth's For the Girls, Magic Mike and Galileo (reading) and was a sub at The Cher Show. Before the shutdown, she held the chair for the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors and was set to sub at Six on Broadway. Rosa Avila was born in Germany and spent her childhood in Mexico and Austria. She began playing drums at age 16 and completed her education at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California. When she graduated in 1991, Rosa was presented with the Outstanding Student of the Year award and received the Human Relations Award.Rosa performed with legends like Ann Margret, Debby Boone, The Lennon Sisters,  Shari Lewis, Elkie Brooks, Glen Campbell, and Petula Clark. In 1992, she began her association with Andy Williams, with whom she performed until 2009.  In 2018, Rosa had the pleasure of holding the drum chair at Summer-The Donna Summer Musical on Broadway, and in 2019 she played on four shows: Chick Flick, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Love in Hate Nation, and For Colored Girls at the public theater.Don't forget to subscribe to my podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher,  Pocket Casts, or wherever you get your podcasts.Clayton Craddock is an independent thinker, father of two beautiful children in New York City. Today's podcast takes up the underlying reasons why there are so few women drummers working on Broadway musicals. I spoke to two amazing drummers, Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila, to find out why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows last year. Some of the topics we discuss include:Their thoughts as to why there weren't many female drummers during their formative years.Did they have women drum teachers, and if not, why was that the case?Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? What about other groups of people? Should there be a proportional representation of other groups? (black, Asian, Latino, gay/lesbian, etc.) Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors? What are some of the blatant sexist encounters they've experienced over the years and how were they affected?Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. Along the way he has also built a successful career as a sideman (Gino Vanelli, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Randy Crawford, Hiroshima, etc..) and solo artist with 5 solo records to his name - Fly South, Monkeys and Slides, Falling Up, Beyond it All, and Fact of the Matter. His new yet to be released record entitled “The Good Fight” should be available very soon. In this interview, which took place at Allen's house in Laurel Canyon, we discuss his teaching career, legato technique, Gino Vanelli stories, playing over chord changes, how slide guitar playing has been a big part of his sound, and much more. You may know me from my other podcast ManageMental where my co-host Mike Mowery and I discuss the hottest topics and strategies in the music business. Or you may know me as the bass player for Ozzy Osbourne… Or you may know me as the crazy cat guy on Instagram. Either way, you are here and I am happy to have your attention. What you may not know is that I started my career in the music biz when I was still a teenager in High School. My first band got a record deal and we released 3 albums before we broke up in 1988. I have gone on to play bass for some of the biggest and baddest names in Heavy Metal. Over the years I have amassed quite the network of friends and colleagues. Managers, record label executives, attorneys, A&R guys, booking agents, publicists, radio programmers and the list goes on. I thought it might be interesting to start a podcast where I interview all of these people. We all started out with one simple thing. Passion. Passion for the music. We weren't just handed our careers. We earned them.  We had no unfair advantages. We are not magicians. We are not superheroes. I want to share all of our stories with you. How did we get here? What drove us? What inspired us? What keeps us doing this now and how do we see into the future? But even more importantly how can you learn from this? How can these stories inspire you? My mission for this podcast is to empower you to take your future into your hands and chase your dreams. We all faced adversity and criticism but we overcame it. You can, too. In Season One, I invite you to meet the masters. Some of the greatest people in the business representing both past and present some of the greatest names of the genre: Slayer, Pantera, Rob Zombie, Anthrax, Ministry, Lamb of God, Clutch, Refused, Mastodon, King Diamond, Dillinger Escape Plan, Amon Amarth and even Jackson Galaxy. We dive deep into their origins and follow their paths as they grow and innovate into uncharted territory. I have known these people on a personal level for decades and even I learned something from these conversations. I know that you will as well. At risk of being redundant these stories are truly inspiring. You want a career in the music business? It can be done. We all did it and now you can learn how. So, on Tuesday, July 3rd I will dropping season 1 Netflix binge listen style.
