My guest in this episode is Craig Colby, a master storyteller with a successful 30-year award winning career in television working for The Sports Network and the Discovery Channel amongst others. In 2017, the opportunity of losing his job presented itself and he set up his own story telling company Colbyvision. He now spends his time helping production companies broadcasters and business owners make top-notch programs & tell their stories.  He also has one of my favourite Lockdown stories. Craig connected with people over Facebook by wearing a different hat each day for 125 days and people then shared their hats in the comments. At the behest of his mother this then became his first book ‘ALL CAPS: Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection' which won the Non-Fiction Category at The Canadian Book Awards in 2022. Craig comes to Music Talks via my dear friend Jesse Jackson from the Set Lusting Bruce Podcast. Jesse's intro mail included the great line ‘Craig's book is Music Talks with hats!' – how could I resist. The book is available on Amazon but if you are in the UK and want a physical copy it currently ships from the U.S. but believe me its worth the wait! It's no surprise that Craig has a compelling story to tell with lots of great insights and observations. He also put a lot of work into making song selections that have a personal connection but also have a connection to what was going on in the wider world.  Craig's song selections were: 60's      -           Love Child                                         -           Diana Ross & The Supremes 70's      -           Don't Take Away The Music   -           Tavares80's      -           Modern Love                                   -           David Bowie90's      -           Fumbling Towards Ectasy        -           Sarah McLachlan00's      -           Lonesome Day                                -           Bruce Springsteen10's      -           Tightrope                                           -           Janelle Monae20's      -           As It Was                                             -           Harry Styles Enjoy :-)If you would like to be on the show then please contact me at musictalkspod@outlook.com Please follow and like Music Talks on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/musictalkspod . In today's heartwarming episode, Patty welcomes Craig Colby, an award-winning executive producer with a fascinating story to share. Craig's journey takes us from his impressive career producing content for networks like Discovery Channel, ESPN Plus, BBC Earth, and the Smithsonian Channel to a surprising pandemic-induced obsession with hats. This newfound passion led to an extraordinary bonding experience with a community of friends, inspiring Craig's book "All Caps: Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection," which later won the Canadian Book Club Award for Best Nonfiction Book of 2022. The memoir isn't just about caps; it's about connections and memories associated with each hat. Craig shares touching stories, like a miraculous encounter with the Toronto Maple Leaves that brightened his son's darkest days. Communication is key. You've heard this phrase before, but how does it apply to sales? Hopefully, at this point, you know from experience that selling is about more than just being an outgoing person with a great smile. If you want to be great at sales, you have to offer more to your customer. In this episode, your host Donald Kelly has a conversation with Craig Colby, the co-founder and president of OneStream Software. Colby brings his experience and dedication to the table to show us how clearly setting expectations can lead to strong, long-term relationships with customers.   Why Should We Set Expectations? Your prospect might be jaded. Have you ever wondered why your customers seem defensive as soon as you start your pitch? They've probably had other businesses overpromise and underdeliver, and they don't want it to happen again. Your customer is looking for a trusted expert. You've put in the work to learn what your product can do, and what it can't. Your customer hasn't. It's the salesperson's responsibility to help their customer understand the capabilities AND the limitations of their product so the customer can act in their own best interest. Your reputation is forever. If you promise outcomes your product can't deliver, your customers will remember that, and they'll spread the word. Build long-term relationships with prospects by acting with integrity and empathy for their situation. That's what will end up setting you apart.   How Do You Start Saying “No”? If you can tell your product isn't right for a customer, you can say “no” while still educating them. Give an explanation for why it's not a good fit, or the conditions under which your product might become a better fit in the future Let go of people-pleasing. Part of the learning curve in sales is understanding that you won't be able to help everyone – you should try to support your customers, but only in a way that makes sense for you and your product When your customers ask you a question about your product's capabilities, it's okay to say “I don't know,” and to bring someone more knowledgeable into the conversation. Your honesty will build your credibility and trust with your customer   “If you're a sales professional, and you're newer, or you're a little more mature, or you're super mature in the job, you can always learn… Always be learning.” – Craig Colby   Resources Craig Colby on LinkedIn Craig Colby on Twitter OneStream Software info@onestreamsoftware.com sales@onestreamsoftware.com   Sponsorship Offers This episode is brought to you in part by Scratchpad. Causing many people to search for ways to pass the time, build a sense of community and do their best not to feel isolated. March 2020, during the great COVID-19 lockdown, television producer Craig Colby's work disappeared. He marked the time by wearing a different baseball hat every day, posting a picture with a story about each one on social media. A community of friends started sharing their hats and stories, too. After 125 days, Craig ran out of hats, but gained new insight into what each cap told him about his own life. In isolation, Craig experienced triumph and heartbreak, love, and loss. He was meeting his childhood sports heroes and floating weightless with an astronaut. The stories in ALL CAPS weave a tapestry of human connection, one hat at a time. Set Lusting Bruce: The Springsteen Podcast

In this week's episode, Jesse goes back up north to visit with another Canadian Bruce Bud, Craig Colby.  Craig talks about his childhood in Canada (after being born in the USA), his storytelling career and his Springsteen journey.  Craig also has a very unique answer to the question “Did Mary get in the car?”   Here is his Mom's column that helped me to find Craig  http://www.chroniclejournal.com/opinion/why-aren-t-i-a-springsteen-fan/article_b9b2ed6a-d0f0-11e6-bf04-130584430e88.html   Craig's Twitter @craigcolby1 Jesse's Twitter @jessejacksonDFW
