This episode of Beyond the Broom Cupboard, we speak to Maddie Moate. BBC's Do you know:https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b09yn3ly/maddies-do-you-knowMaddie's Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@maddiemoateA very curious Christmas west end showhttps://nimaxtheatres.com/shows/maddies-curious-christmas-live-on-stage/ About Maddie Moate:Maddie Moate is a presenter known for her work on CBeebies, YouTube and in live theatre. She started her presenting career online with a comedy sketch series about smartphones and apps, sponsored by Nokia. This led to her presenting for various tech brands and becoming a YouTube tech presenter and journalist.Maddie was then hired by BBC Earth for their YouTube channel as a scientist familiar with the YouTube format.CBeebies then approached her to host a new tech science engineering show as they wanted a real person, not an actor, to host.Maddie's Approach to Science Communication:Maddie believes in finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and making science accessible to everyone. She focuses on simplifying complex scientific concepts using relatable examples and language that children can understand. For example, she explains weight in terms of small elephants and uses familiar objects like forks and fences to spark children's interest.Maddie prioritises family viewing and avoids patronising language, ensuring her content is engaging for both children and adults."Do You Know?" Show:The show features two segments: "How is it made?" and "How does it work?".Finding factories in the UK for the "How is it made?" segment became increasingly difficult as the series progressed. The show's topics were chosen through crowd research, with school children providing ideas, as well as Maddie's own curation of ideas and identifying products made in the UK.The random nature of the episode topics was partly due to the availability of factory locations.Maddie's YouTube Content:Maddie's YouTube content often focuses on finding extraordinary stories within ordinary objects and themes, like paper made from elephant poo and bread baked in geothermal hot springs. She sees these as opportunities to teach children about topics like sustainability and geothermal energy in engaging ways."A Very Curious Christmas" Book and Stage Show:The book explores the science behind Christmas traditions and cultures, like why we have Christmas stockings and how Christmas crackers work. The book was inspired by Maddie's difficulty finding resources that collated fun Christmas-themed science questions. The stage show adaptation is set in Santa's workshop, where Maddie works alongside two elves to fix the chaotic workshop using science. The show incorporates audience interaction, jokes, music and visual elements to keep audiences of all ages engaged.Navigating YouTube with Children:Maddie acknowledges the challenges of YouTube's algorithm-driven content, which can lead to children repeatedly seeing similar content. She recommends using the YouTube Kids app and curating a list of trusted channels to provide a safer and more enriching experience.Maddie encourages parents to watch YouTube content with their children to discover family-friendly creators and ensure a shared experience Hosted on Acast. I really enjoyed chatting with self-confessed ‘movement/mind geek', journalist, author and editor Caroline Williams. We discuss the connection between movement and the mind, highlighting the physical and mental benefits of exercise. Caroline explains how movement affects brain function and the importance of incorporating movement into daily life, the impact of sedentarism on the brain and the role of movement in preventing cognitive decline and mental diseases. We talked about the relationship between movement and confidence, as well as the positive effects of movements that emphasise bonding and synchronicity. Caroline provides some fascinating examples from her research for her highly successful book, ‘Move! The new science of body over mind'. Caroline's ability to make the science easily digestible to the non-scientist and her sense of fun, make her work hugely enjoyable and accessible. About this week's guest: Caroline Williams is a science journalist, editor and author based in the UK. She is a consultant and regular contributor to New Scientist magazine, covering neuroscience, health and nature-based stories. Nearly 1 out of 4 of the new garments we purchase end up being returned to the brand/retailer. While retail companies tend to keep the true data about returns under wraps, industry experts estimate that half of returned clothing is never worn by another person, ending up in the landfill instead. So yeah, returns are a pretty big deal across the entire retail industry (even outside of clothing). Amanda is joined by Emily Austin, who has a lot of experience in the world of returns, customer care, and the intersection of technology and returns. What is the true cost of returns? In this episode we get into the following: Why processing returns (also known as "reverse logistics") is very expensive How finding a fix for returns has become an entire industry Why retailers are changing their return policies The environmental and social impact of so many returns How the high volume of returns is both the result and cause of declining clothing quality. And yes, it is very ironic that retailers could reduce the number of returns by improving quality! When most orchestras commission a new work, they usually ask the composer to produce music that fits on a standard concert program, like a 10-minute overture or a 45-minute symphony. But when BBC Earth approached composers Adam Lukas and James Everingham — along with the two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer — to compose the score for its latest nature documentary series, Frozen Planet II, the show's producers needed six hours of music. Even for this trio of seasoned composers, that's a tall order to fill. Besides creating a sonic universe to accompany Frozen Planet II's icy, snow-capped visuals, these composers had to help fulfill the show's core mission: introducing viewers not only to the daily lives of polar bears, penguins, and snow monkeys — but also the ways climate change is compounding the difficulties they face surviving in the coldest regions of the world. "The series is tackling the issue of the climate crisis," Lukas says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "We knew we wanted to tell the stories of the animals in their habitats in a way that helps people connect with them and care about them in a genuine way. That's something Hans has spent his career being the best at." In this episode, I sit down with Lukas and Everingham to discuss the process of creating the series's score — which involved more than 100 people working for three years while navigating lockdown restrictions. They also share stories about collaborating with the legendary Zimmer, the magical time they spent in the studio with the Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora, and how they define success. Frozen Planet II is available to stream in the U.S. on Prime Video, Vudu, and Apple TV. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Kaja Kraska może nie odnalazłaby się jako bohaterka programu “Życie na pustkowiu”, ale jako prowadzącą - jak najbardziej. I to właśnie dlatego o kultowej produkcji BBC Earth rozmawiamy z twórczynią podróżniczego kanału Globstory.
Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, Arctic: Our Frozen Planet is another visually stunning piece by BBC Earth. Shot over the course of a year, the film transports the viewer into a world of narwhals, polar bears, caribou and more as they attempt to survive in the frozen wilderness. But with the climate changing more rapidly than ever before, can its people and wildlife keep pace? In this 1on1, we speak with polar bear expert Eric Regehr about interacting with wildlife, man's impact on the environment and slowing down climate change.

Materiał powstał we współpracy z BBC Earth Materiał powstał we współpracy z programem BBC Earth Najpierw zmrozi wam krew w żyłach, ale chwilkę później roztopi serce niczym najcieplejsza gorąca czekolada. I tak w kółko, przez sześć genialnych odcinków. „Mroźna planeta II” to istna piguła emocji.

"3 out of 5 T-shirts will end up in the bin. It's wasteful and doesn't financially make sense" I hopped on a Ferry and headed over to the Isle of Wight to make my very own branded t-shirt for this episode (see Sustainable Squad on social channels to see my experience). Sofia Voudouroglou, who looks after marketing and comms, walked me through their clever but very simple process of setting up your own website, creating your own clothing brand and then printing your own design on a t-shirt made from 100% organic cotton, a material made to be remade. I met people who were interested in a form of movement where you move like a natural human. You carry, you climb, or you run. It's all kinds of sort of animal/human base exercise. And they have this thing they call movement snacks. So you get up every 20 minutes and you do some crawling around the room or you hang from your door frame or you lift ...
