This summer, Superman announced they will begin filming in Cleveland from June 17 to July 16, joining a legacy of pictures filmed in our neighborhoods--like The Avengers, Spider Man, and A Christmas Story. For decades, major cities across the United States have jockeyed to attract the major motion picture industry in hopes of spurring jobs and economic growth. Yet, BIPOC representation in this industry for Ohio lags behind other states. Is opportunity being left on the table?rnrnSheila Wright, Founder and President of The CREW Foundation wants to make sure Ohio builds a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive industry to catalyze economic growth. CREW strategically supports projects and partners committed to providing hands-on training, full access, and real work opportunities for underrepresented populations. And with these skills and experience comes the power to become creators themselves--telling their community's stories in their own words and shifting narratives for lasting change.rnrnJoin us for a panel conversation featuring Sheila Wright, Founder and President of the CREW Foundation, and Amir Miller, CEO/ Founder, Pure Vitality Productions, and learn how we can catalyze economic growth and increase representation in film, television, and media production industries.

Are you wondering how to be successful in TV Production? Teri Weinberg is a Former NBC Entertainment Executive Vice President who oversaw all aspects of NBC Entertainment's scripted development and current primetime programming in 2007, then launched her own production company, Yellow Brick Road, in 2010, with a two-year first look deal with NBC Universal. At the conclusion of that deal, Weinberg would independently produce, and consult for MTV Network. Teri then partnered with Golden Globe, Emmy Award winning actor and producer, America Ferrera in 2016, with a four-year first look deal with NBC Universal, and since returned to independent producing. Teri was Co-Executive producer of the Peabody, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning “The Office,” which has also received two Television Critics Association Awards, multiple WGA awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She also served as Executive Producer of “Ugly Betty,” winner of two Golden Globe Awards, an Emmy Nomination, a Peabody Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In addition, Teri was Executive producer of the Golden Globe nominated, “The Tudors.” Weinberg was nominated for two Emmys in July 2007, as both “The Office” and “Ugly Betty” were nominated as Outstanding Comedy Series. In episode 460 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out how she was able to deal with the initial negative critic feedback on the television show "The Office", whether we will see a reunion for the television show "Ugly Betty", how much history goes into "The Tudors" versus drama to keep audiences coming back, how demanding and stressful it is to be Executive Vice President for NBC Entertainment, what is the vision for her own production company called Yellow Brick Road, what is her advice for college students who want to get into television production, where she gets inspiration for new TV shows, how we can avoid dwelling on problems and getting to solutions, and how she's been able to achieve peace of mind in her life. Enjoy!
In the second act of my chat with Hawi James Ouma, we dive into his incredible journey from being wrongfully arrested to becoming a role model for young boys in Kenya's juvenile system. It all started with eight days in a police station that left him with a new perspective on life: find the treasure in your troubles. Now, Hawi is the driving force behind Life Song Kenya, where he mentors boys who are often stigmatized by society. Hawi's story story is both heartwarming and jaw-dropping, and his parting words challenge us all to focus on what we have, instead of what we lack – inspiring, to say the least!Bio:About 1 in every 4 boys in Kenya is unfathered, underfathered or misfathered.Growing up without a father or a father-figure causes a boy to feel unappreciated, unloved and unprotected. Therefore, they become more vulnerable to juvenile delinquency, gender based violence, sexual assault, bullying, crime and conflict. They also become prone to dropping out of school, lacking an appetite for life or lacking respect for their mothers or the authority.Through my work, I help create an ideal environment where boys become more aware of who they really are. Together as a co-partners, I'm the catalyst that helps to remind boys and young men of the infinite treasure they possess. When I was being interviewed for a TV Production job, which I wasn't qualified for, I said that life becomes a beautiful lifesong.LinkedINFaceBookInstagramXYouTube
Today I am so thrilled to be joined by Hawi James Ouma, an incredible man who survived some of the most turbulent times in Uganda, only to move back to rural Kenya after his father passed away. Hawi's journey is a cocktail of adventure, confusion, and raw emotion, though despite facing ostracism from his community and a stint in police custody, he found a guiding light in reading and storytelling. Through Shakespeare and Ben Carson, he learned to turn his focus from what he lacked to what he was great at—writing and storytelling. It was the key that unlocked a new perspective on life. Hawi's parting wisdom? Focus on your one thing, the one skill or passion that makes you, well, you – you never know what doors it might open. Stay tuned for Act 2 of our conversation next week!Bio:About 1 in every 4 boys in Kenya is unfathered, underfathered or misfathered.Growing up without a father or a father-figure causes a boy to feel unappreciated, unloved and unprotected.
