WOW! What a guest we have for all of you! Dan Blakeslee is easily one of the most talented people out there and I have been lucky enough to know him for about 30 years. Not only is he an amazing musician with and vast discography & endless list of venues performed (including the Newport Folk Festival) but he is also an incredible artist. He is the genius behind the label for "Heady Topper", has created album covers for dozens of bands including Jonah Tolchin, The Tan Vampires, Assembly of Dust and many more. He is a true one of a kind talent and we were very excited to have him on the show. We discussed why he quit the Clarinet, his favorite ice cream flavor, the artist that influenced him the most, the undeniable fact that Hummingbirds are the best pets, the best place(s) to get coffee in Portsmouth NH, where he got his first guitar, his first local concert, where his first gig was, his analysis of social media algorithm, he gives thanks to Court Tower at Barnicle Billys, clears up how likely Bigfoot is to be real, remembers the magic of the Six Million dollar man, explains why band camp is better than Spotify, shares his plan for his upcoming record release(s) as well as a Coffee Table book of his Concert Posters and the origins of Doctor Gasp among many other amazing topics. He is one of my favorite people, great to talk with and we hope you enjoyed the conversation as much as we did! Every October, Maine-based folk musician and artist Dan Blakeslee dons a red hat with a skull on it, decorates a stage with dozens of plastic jack-o-lanterns and performs an entire set of spooky songs as his Halloween alter ego, Dr. Gasp.

For this Episode we literally go back to where it all started and the man himself, Dan Blakeslee. Dan is responsible for two of the most iconic labels in craft beer and some of the early inspirations for the podcast and project - The Alchemist's Heady Topper and Focal Banger. Dan has been an active part of our evolution and growth and it means a lot to us. From Episode 1 to appearing at two of our events. Summer '17 at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven, CT and Hubbub in Bridgton Maine. Not only is he a great artist and human, he's a storyteller and musician. He performed at both events and even brings some music to this episode. He's one of the good guys and a beautiful soul. Dan recently lost his brother and we want to dedicate this episode to him and his memory. I wish I could have given him a hug and let him know he's in our hearts. A great episode that puts it all in perspective to see how far we have come together.
The pandemic has changed how many people are celebrating Christmas this year, but one thing remains constant, and that's the joy of Christmas music. New England musician Dan Blakeslee has released a new album this month called "Christmas Jubilee " that has a mix of tradition and original songs. NHPR's Morning Edition Host Rick Ganley caught up with Blankslee to chat more about the album. ( Editor's note: We recommend listening to this story.) Rick Ganley: What makes you love Christmas music so much? Dan Blakeslee: You know, I mean, depending on what Christmas music you're listening to, but a lot of times it has this, like, joyous, celebratory tone to it. And ever since I was a little kid, my parents were always playing Christmas music throughout the season. And I have a vast Christmas record collection, about 225 strong right now and growing. Rick Ganley: This is not your first holiday album, Dan. Every October, you turned from Dan Blakeslee into Doctor Gasp for Halloween. Dan

This is an extra-packed episode with music (all shortened a bit for time) and conversation about Dan Blakeslee's many adventures busking in and around the subway, his/my thoughts about art school, music fundraising, beer label art, the kindness of strangers, and much more. Dan is the type of person you could disregard as hipster with his beard and his plaid jacket if it weren’t for his authenticity and talent. After spending five minutes with him it's difficult not to become enamored with his open heart. It's a byproduct of spending the last 20 years doing something he loves.
