In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with musician and artist Dan Blakeslee! Dan has been making music and art for the past 30 years — in fact, he performed at Laura's college back in 2003! His music is largely about his life, but sometimes it's about ghouls and vampires. His art, which we think pairs beautifully with his music, is whimsical and playful with visions of mermaids and other mystical sea things! In this episode, Dan regales us with magical tales, including the unofficial nominee for “most supportive boss in the universe”, his time spent busking in Boston, the challenges and triumphs of screenprinting, and that time he got lost and found himself in Sleepy Hollow! This episode will make you laugh until your cheeks hurt. Find more Dan online at www.DanBlakeslee.com and on Instagram at www.instagram.com/danblakesleemusic and Facebook at www.facebook.com/@DanBlakesleeAndTheCalabashClub. Listen to this episode wherever you listen to podcasts or on our website www.CreativeGutsPodcast.com. Teddy Boys (and Teddy Girls)emerged in Britain in the early 1950s, becoming the UK's first distinct youth subculture.    Born in the aftermath of World War II, these working-class teenagers rejected post-war austerity and embraced a bold, rebellious style of dandyish suits, long drape jackets, narrow trousers, velvet collars, patterned waistcoats - and of course pomaded quiffed hair for the boys and equally sharp threads for the girls.   Musican and writer Max Decharne, author of 'Teddy Boys: Post-War Britain and the First Youth Revolution', came to the Bureau to talk about the Teddys - and about Mods, Punk, the masssive influence of Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock and of the impact the working class have had on British fashion.   The Teds became notorious in the media - associated with violence, for clashes with rival gangs and for their alleged involvement in the 1958 Notting Hill riots. But was that really the case? Or was it because, as working class upstarts they rattled the middle and upper class establishment? Embracing American rock'n'roll, they became the foundation for future youth movements, proving that teenagers could form their own cultural identity, shaping Britain's rock and roll scene and inspiring later subcultures like the Mods and Rockers. New from Concert Cast, we present: Let's Go Festival - A rockumentary podcast that brings the music festival to you.Our series starts in Farmington, Maine at the Sandy River Music Festival.  Here, there are no frills, just a bunch of passionate people coming together to celebrate local musicians.Singer Jason Spooner puts it this way: “We've played a bunch of festivals where it's kind of a zoo. Big lines and port-a-potty masses and mud and the energy's just almost a little too frenetic. This is more my style, everybody's laid back and very respectful." The Sandy River Music Festival might just be one of the most Maine things out there. Fire pits to gather around, fresh mountain water to swim in, musicians to sway to. It's a festival that manages to be both eclectic and cozy, vast and very familiar. The VenueIt seems that many Maine musicians feel that they have to leave Maine to make it in the music scene. And Mainers often feel like they have to go to big cities to hear music magic. What makes the Sandy River Music Festival so special is that when you stand in the field behind the Narrow Gauges cinema, where it is located, this feeling disappears. You are exactly where you need to be. You can feel magic in the river and in the crowds of committed music lovers. Families near campfires, friends dancing, solo campers meeting new friends. You can come to the Sandy River Festival as you are.Lena, from the Maine band Golden Oak told me, “Every time I come home, I'm so impressed. I'm just like, What is happening in Farmington? When did you get so hip and cool and super cool?”The MusicAn amazing thing about the music here is that it doesn't feel exclusive. You can listen to bands reference each other in their set intros, grab a beer with them after they play or join in on impromptu fire pit jams. Many festival go-ers know the musicians too. Either indirectly, having grown up listening to them at shows or directly, as friends. And that's a special feeling no-one takes for granted. The Camping - GlampingThe festival is an overnight affair. You've got some options. You can rent beautiful bell tents that can fit up to six of your friends. Or you can bring an RV. The camping grounds are spacious and within walking distance to the very swimmable Sandy River. The Idea Man - Meet John the Owner“He goes into a quantum timescape. He's running so fast and so steady. It's just like a stargate opens up.” That's just one of the ways John, the organizer of this festival is described. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're looking for the story of one man backed by a superhero team of technicians, planners, builders and wizards making magic happen – have a listen to this episode of Concert Cast.2023 Lineup of musical memories2023's lineup is Griffin Sherry from the Ghost of Paul Revere, The Wolff Sisters, King Kyote, the Adam Ezra Group, and so many more folks. Helping female podcasters start a podcast is something we at The Wave love to do — among all of our other amazing podcast-related skills, thank you very much! Tracey Thorn, musician and writer, is best known as one half of the duo Everything but the Girl. Brought up in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, she bought her first guitar, a black Les Paul copy, when she was 16 and her first band was called the Stern Bobs. Shortly after, she formed her own all-female band, Marine Girls, before moving to Hull University to study English. On her first night there, she met her future husband, Ben Watt, and they went on to form Everything But the Girl. Between 1982 and 2000, they sold more than nine million records and toured Europe and America. Despite their success, Tracey did not always enjoy performing live. At 35 she left the pop world to look after her twin girls, who were followed by her son Blake. She took about seven years out to be a full time parent, but since then she has come back to song-writing, recording music and writing: her first memoir Bedsit Disco Queen was a best seller, and she has a fortnightly column in the New Statesman. This year Tracey was presented with the outstanding contribution to music prize, at the AIM independent music awards. As B. Dolan and Sage Francis bring their latest Edinburgh Fringe Show Tricknology to an end, I felt it was time to revisit this interview with B. Dolan from back in October 2015. Enjoy. The Curator Podcast – Episode 19: B. DolanAs I get older I find myself growing to appreciate hip hop more and more. In my teens it didn't grab me in the same way punk or metal did, and naively, I shunned it. My guest on this episode is rapper B. Dolan and he, alongside Sage Francis, was one of the artists who forced me to realign my expectations of what hip hop is, was and could be.The truth of the matter is that when your exposure to a particular genre of music comes solely from mainstream sources, it can be quite difficult to find something worthwhile. Like all teenagers, I rebelled, and in doing so I rebelled against the chart and dance music which was common in between my groups of friends in high school and in my neighbourhood. I took solace in the angst of “alternative” music.A lot of that chart music was hip hop and no, it wasn't particularly good hip hop. As someone who had deliberately placed themselves outside of mainstream art, I found that when I looked back in to find some shred of meaning, all I could see were empty messages and a sense of disappointment. That's not to say that it is impossible for popular music to carry a message. Now that I'm older I can see such a view is quite patently nonsense, but in the naivety of youth I certainly felt that.So in my teens, my flirtation and subsequent rejection of hip hop was the result of two things:A) to me, the stuff that was on the radio or on MTV had nothing to say to me. I was looking for something political, something which raged and had teeth. 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nelly and the other hip hop that circulated when those artists were at their peak, was empty to me.B) I had no one to guide me. It was easy to find people who could introduce me to new rock music. Literally no one I knew had any inkling of hip hop beyond whatever was coming out of the radio that week. For many years I lived my life ignoring hip hop, thinking that it was all violence and misogyny.About ten years ago that changed. A friend opened me up to “underground” hip hop, with Sage Francis at the head it.At the risk of coming across like a snob, I've always found the entry point for hip hop music to be quite high. Perhaps it's because I'm a snotty punk kid at heart – those short, sharp stabs of music are certainly designed to make you think, but the message is fleeting, it's difficult to hold onto before you're off onto the next song. A hip hop record is more layered and more complex, it demands the full investment of your time. It requires repeated listens and time to unfold in your head. But I appreciate them. I enjoy spending time with an album, deciphering lyrics and meanings, getting underneath the complexity of the music and living inside it.Prior to this interview it had been five years since I last saw B. Dolan play. Weirdly it was five years to the exact day, in the exact same venue. In that particular instance he was supporting Sage Francis, an artist who also happened to be responsible for introducing me to B. Dolan on Twitter some years before.Fallen House, Sunken City, which bizarrely only came out five years ago but it somehow feels longer, is an album which pulled me out of a musical slump I'd fallen into. It's an awesome record, and one of my favourites. Although I do think his new one, Kill the Wolf, might usurp that.Highlights include:Getting into fights at the Westmoreland service stationA shout out to Passion of the WeissObession with musicAn almost encyclopedic knowledge of hip hopA little bit of PrinceRecording and producing ‘Kill the Wolf'B. Dolan's evolution as a songwriterB. Dolan is a super nice guy, and to hear him close with The Hunter at the show later that night was a pretty huge deal for me.
