Why did I want to talk with Denny Wilson on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? I am your host Jason LaChance, and I spoke with Denny because in 1999, five years after his last drink and drug use, Wilson received his Priesthood Ordination and was installed in the Office of Elder two years later in 2001. Denny is the Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of F I Community Housing, Inc., an Ohio Non-Profit Corporation that provided Mental Health, Alcohol & Other drugs, Reentry, and Recovery Support Services to individuals and families throughout Ohio from 1995-2019. His organization provided direct care to over 20,000 individuals and their family members and has been recognized as the #1 Provider of Recovery Housing six times in the state. F I Community Housing was recently recognized as The Best of Akron, (Non-Profit category) and awarded the Best Original Story by the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce in 2019. Denny developed and trains a nationally-recognized curriculum teaching the steps to successfully own and operate Recovery Housing, and designs programs for other providers and state agencies to operate from a peer-based model of recovery. Wilson has also been directly involved in creating over 900 new Recovery Coaches/Certified Ohio Peer Supporters throughout the State in 66 of Ohio's 88 counties, as well as the development of the Ohio Peer Supporter Curriculum. Wilson spends much of his time volunteering around Akron and is actively involved in Jail & Prison Ministry writing and visiting with inmates incarcerated around the state of Ohio. He has been honored as Father of the Year, awarded several Spiritual Leadership awards, and recognized for his work in building a more prosperous and caring community. Wilson also serves on several committees and boards throughout his home State of Ohio. In October 2010, Denny was directly responsible for helping to define the roles and responsibilities of a Peer Supporter, and Ohio's definition of Recovery. Wilson also lobbied to ensure this new evidence-based practice and Ohio-certified service was reimbursable through Medicaid. By providing powerful personal insight into recovery, from a provider and person in long-term recovery, Wilson has helped develop Recovery Support Service Guidelines and Standards for Ohio and other states and opened the very first Peer Oriented-Peer Operated Recovery Community Center in the state. Wilson served as a founding member and Vice-President of Ohio Recovery Housing, an Ohio affiliate of NARR, (the National Alliance of Recovery Housing), and has helped more than 100 individuals and organizations successfully start and maintain recovery residences throughout the country. Denny has been recognized by many Civic and Religious Leaders around the Country and remains a consistent advocate for Recovery Support Services and their delivery, across America. Denny has spoken in front of Congress on several occasions and has been recognized by two U.S. Presidents for his work surrounding addiction recovery, and his innovative and effective methods to help others achieve and maintain sobriety. Denny is also known for his ability to mobilize thousands of individuals in a short amount of time, bringing 6,800 together in less than three hours, and more than 8,000 in less than twenty-four hours to address social threats and political reform that affect continued service delivery and awareness surrounding addiction and mental illness. Denny has addressed crowds as a keynote speaker and has worked with many high-profile celebrities and individuals. Denny is a dedicated father to his seven children, and a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart of over 34 years, and serves as Vice-President of their company, Wilson Empowerment, Ltd where together, they provide individualized care, education, and mentorship opportunities to individuals and families. Hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman jump right into some recent travel updates in this episode of On the Move. John has a report from his time previewing one of the largest vehicle collections to ever join the lineup of a Mecum auction—the Triple J Ranch Collection heading to Mecum Glendale. With about 170 vehicles, the collection features such standouts as a slew of movie car replicas, modern performance muscle and even Ford Model As and Ts. Moving along, Matt recounts his experience at the Concours in the Hills, which took place in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Cars were on display around Fountain Park, with Matt particularly liking the assembly of high-end exotics. Up next, the pair rundown the schedule of upcoming Mecum auctions, including a spotlight on the newly added Charlotte auction set for September 23-24. Then it's off to what the guys penned in the latest edition of the Mecum Magazine before spotlighting some of the latest automotive news. Wrapping up, they discuss Nissan's latest ad showing the forthcoming Z sports car. In the second part of this week's episode, Matt chats with longtime race car driver Denny Wilson. Denny shares memories of how he got his start driving a humble Triumph in the late 1960s and working his way up to such endeavors as being a paid driver in the IMSA Camel GT series driving two BMW M1s and a Porsche RSR. He also shares stories from his time competing at nearly 60 race tracks over the years, as well as his current activities racing a vintage Lotus Super 7.

Denny Wilson reached a weight of 350 pounds at his highest weight. Dealing with a variety of illnesses and diseases, he finally took control of his life when he realized much of the information he was being given by medical professionals was a band-aide rather than a solution. Denny lives in west Texas in what is known as the Permian Basin, in the city of Odessa, home of the real Friday Night Lights. He has been on a journey from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a whole food plant based lifestyle. Denny had a heart attack 7 years ago after having 100% blockage in the left anterior descending artery (LAD). He was living in a rural town at the time where the staff treated him for heartburn. When the blood enzyme levels were reported back to the staff after being sent two towns over to be tested in a lab, they sent him by life flight to the hospital. He received a stent and spent a week in the hospital trying to recover. After being released, Denny was scheduled for rehab for 12 weeks, which included making some adjustments to the diet, but with what was basically a calorie restricted diet combined with 5 day a week exercise. Initially, Denny lost some weight and started seeing some of the numbers of his astronomical blood glucose levels come down (had been in the 600s) and his blood pressure stabilize after being at stroke and heart attack levels for years). But these successes were short lived. Denny's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_U4GPaCE59IDIqAOsvQMgQ Denny's Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/dennysplantbasedjourney
Denny Wilson founded FI Community Housing in 1995. Today, it’s Ohio’s largest peer-operated recovery community. Denny’s past informs his present mission in fighting the opioid epidemic: by the age of 25, he was addicted to several drugs, including heroin, crack cocaine, and alcohol. After he went through a 21-day recovery program, Denny was awarded a 14-day stay in a sober house. He came under the wing of a mentor who created a safe space and gave him hope. “He was the world’s first recovery coach, to me,” Denny says. “He asked me one key question. What is it that you want?” Denny tried to give his mentor the answers he felt he had been programmed for—that he wanted to get his life together, get a nice house, a good job, a nice car. But that wasn’t the real issue. Denny explains, “He looked me dead in the eyes and said, ‘No, what do you really want?’ That’s when I broke down and said, you know what, I want my wife and kids back. I want to have a relationship with my mom and my dad and my sisters and my brothers.” Denny tells how this experience led him to create a peer-operated recovery community. “God, for those who believe in him, spoke to me directly and said, ‘This is what I want you doing for the rest of your life: helping other people find stable housing and supportive services, just like you have received.’ That’s been my lifelong mission since.” Connect with Denny: Facebook Web Site Instagram Order his new book here: www.FuckHeroinBook.com ++++ This Episode of The My Story Podcast is Sponsored by Furnace Hills Coffee Company Use Coupon Code MyStory to save 25% on your next order from Furnacehillscoffee.com The My Story Podcast is a production of ConjoStudios, LLC For professional, award-winning production, visit: www.conjostudios.com Like the music on the show? Sustainability is not just for big cities and "blue" states. We talk sustainability with Sarpy County Nebraska's Engineer Denny Wilson about his role as a “Plangineer” working closely with planners. Sarpy is the smallest but fastest growing county in the state, so sustainability is important.
