Just because you're not committing violent acts of racism doesn't mean you aren't responsible for the persistence of racism. Many think racism is only aggressive hateful acts done directly to races opposite their own.But any action that projects inferiority onto another, makes suspicious assumptions, casts blanket statements, or believes/acts from a place of hate, all based on someone's race, is racism.Think back to the last time someone said or did something that was even slightly racist. What did you do?Plenty of times we've found ourselves in that situation & out of fear of disrupting the flow of the moment, causing a scene, or whatever the reason is, we don't say anything. That's a bystander. That's not who we're called to be.In our conversation today, we talk with Derrick Sier about 4 ways to not be a bystander.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL CONVERSATION WITH DERRICK SIERMentioned in the EpisodeConnect with DerrickInvite Derrick to Share with Your Team ---If you like what you hear, please leave a review! What are you doing as a leader to engage with the topic of racial reconciliation? It's been a year since the murder that ignited the prevalence of this conversation around the world. When you look back on the things you set out to implement or accomplish around racial reconciliation did you accomplish them or did those things fade away? For many, this is a huge topic and there's a lot of fear associated with saying something wrong or not knowing what to say at all.If that's you, you're not alone. In our conversation today, we share part 1 of our interview with Derrick Sier where he talks about the importance of creating spaces for people to share their ignorance & taking the initiative to build relationships.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL CONVERSATION WITH DERRICK SIER---If you like what you hear, please leave a review! Take a listen as I chat with Derrick Sier: a teacher, mentor, philanthropist, and advocate; basically, an all-around superstar. He’s not a teacher within the typical schoolhouse walls, but he does work with youth in our City and with the Oklahoma City Police Department in its meaningful and transformative Youth Leadership Academy by empowering our youth through mentorship, communication, and advocacy skills. Come along and learn about the Bridge Youth Impact Center and the work this amazing non-profit is doing for youth in terms of impacting drug addiction, domestic violence, and mental health among our youth population. Derrick and I chat about the importance of connection and building bridges with people, the importance of mission statements, and his work with FACT (Family Awareness Community Teamwork). Derrick shares his personal story of his first interaction with law enforcement and how his work today is to break down barriers between our youth and the police department and show that our men and women in blue will advocate and show our kids that they are there to help them take another shot. There is power in sharing our stories and we talk about what to do when you hit those obstacles and people that are not on board. My hope is that you will walk away today truly inspired about our youth and the community work you can do to be a connector, bridge-builder, and provide confidence and hope in yourself and others, one thought at a time. Learn from Derrick what it means to JUMP into the opportunities and mission to make this world better.
