In Season 2, Episode 2, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh begin with Mark sharing about his Australia and New Zealand workshop tour with the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. Even koalas find their way into the conversation. Episode page with videos and more We then shift to our coffee selection of the day - pour overs. This old school method has found a resurgence not for being inexpensive but for giving you more control over the extraction process making it the best method for the best coffees. Jamie explains and demonstrates the process with enough details to get you going.  We then get to our main topics, beginning with some interesting statistics. 80% of Americans believe we'd be better off with more people working in manufacturing, but 25% of them believe that they would be better off if they worked in manufacturing. Whether skilled trades or engineers, we discuss why jobs in manufacturing are still getting a bad wrap. Continuing with manufacturing, we discuss the possible defunding and impact of the Manufacturing Extension Partnerships, a nationwide network of support centers for small- and medium-sized manufacturing businesses, which gets a significant amount of their funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  Boeing is announcing a new, or refreshed, culture in an effort to turn the company around from a seemingly never-ending parade of crisis issues over several years. Are declarations of values enough? Do they need to be better defined? How do you back them up? We discuss all of this, including a mention of Jamie's video course on culture change. While discussing blue chip names, this is the 40th anniversary of New Coke, an introduction that was likely never needed. Was it a mistake, and how do you recover when the product and the brand is this iconic? We do not include a taste test of New Coke or Coke Classic. What happens when scientific curiosity meets life-changing opportunity? Nicole Mumbi shares her remarkable journey and provides a powerful answer to this question.Moving from Nairobi, Kenya to Boston in 2019, Nicole faced the challenge of cultural transition while nurturing her budding interest in science. Though initially experiencing culture shock and language barriers, her determination never wavered. A simple middle school experiment on atmospheric pressure had already planted the seed of scientific fascination that would shape her future path. When Nicole's high school guidance counselor suggested applying to the BioBuilder Apprenticeship Program, she seized the opportunity despite her fears and busy academic schedule. At Ginkgo Bioworks' Learning Lab, Nicole and her team developed "Break the Stigma" – an innovative at-home HIV detection project that engineered bacterial cells with CD4 receptors to detect the virus in blood samples. This first-hand laboratory experience transformed her understanding of science from textbook concepts to real-world applications. The technical skills Nicole gained – from PCR to scientific presentation – became the foundation for her subsequent internship at the prestigious Ragon Institute. Now thriving as a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology student at UMass Amherst, she gives back by tutoring other students in chemistry while contemplating whether her future lies in research, medicine, or a combination of both.Throughout her story, Nicole emphasizes the importance of pushing past imposter syndrome to take chances. "I remember having this imposter syndrome person talking to me saying, 'I don't think you have enough qualifications,'" she shares. "But I was grateful for my mom's encouragement to partake in opportunities without feeling like an outsider."Learn more about BioBuilder's programs for students, educators, and industry professionals here

As the cybersecurity world gears up for RSAC 2025 in San Francisco, we hit the road again—this time with Chris Pierson, Founder and CEO of BlackCloak, for a pre-event chat packed with insight, community spirit, and some big news.Chris is no stranger to the RSA stage—this year marks his 21st year presenting—and he's bringing his energy to two powerful sessions. The first, titled “Protecting What Matters: Your Family and Home,” kicks off bright and early on Monday, April 28. It's not about blinky lights or enterprise networks—it's about us. The cybersecurity community often talks about protecting organizations, but what about protecting ourselves and our families? Chris will explore how security pros can apply their skills at home, covering identity theft, scams, and home network safety. It's a refreshing and much-needed call to action that connects the personal and professional. On Wednesday, Chris returns with co-presenter James Shreve for a two-hour Learning Lab, “When Things Go Boom: Supply Chain Risk.” This Chatham House Rule session dives deep into one of today's most complex challenges: managing third-party risk without stopping the business in its tracks. Participants will step into different roles—board members, CISOs, legal, finance—to engage in a live, collaborative scenario that pushes them to think beyond checklists. Real talk. Real collaboration. And practical takeaways. But that's not all. BlackCloak is also unveiling its new Digital Executive Protection Framework, designed to help organizations assess and strengthen protections for executives and their families. Chris teases that this framework includes 14 essential tenets that blend physical, digital, and organizational awareness—and he'll be sitting down with us again at the event to go deeper. With 15–20 BlackCloak team members on site, a full schedule of meetings, events, and community conversations, this year is shaping up to be a milestone for BlackCloak at RSAC. If you're attending, keep an eye on their LinkedIn page for updates, booking links, and suite details. As Chris says, it's about lifting our heads, scanning the horizon, and showing up for our community—and our families. Keywords: RSAC2025, Chris Pierson, BlackCloak, cybersecurity, RSA Conference, digital protection, executive protection, supply chain risk, identity theft, privacy, home network security, third-party risk, CISOs, cybersecurity community, digital executive protection framework, GRC, threat intelligence, infosec, personal security, cybersecurity awareness______________________Guest: Chris Pierson, Founder & CEO of BLACKCLOAK | Digital Executive Protection | Concierge Cybersecurity & Privacy Protection . . . in their Personal Lives | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drchristopherpierson/Hosts:Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber] | On ITSPmagazine:  https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society Podcast & Audio Signals Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBLACKCLOAK:https://itspm.ag/itspbcweb____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from RSA Conference 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/rsa-conference-usa-2025-rsac-san-francisco-usa-cybersecurity-event-infosec-conference-coverageChris SessionsProtecting What Matters—Your Family & Home https://path.rsaconference.com/flow/rsac/us25/FullAgenda/page/catalog/session/1739369849404001eWtUWhen Things Go Boom! I would encourage people to find a good standard routine where they can get as much benefit for themselves first, and then family and then, funny enough, you put business last. Because if you are not solid mentally yourself, and you don't have your loved ones close to you, you don't have a solid family that is loving and caring and is doing well, then business is meaningless. So your health is is the most important, and then followed by, you know, a caring ecosystem, a caring circle, and business will be fine.

Jamie Flinchbaugh, Founder of JFlinch, shares his insights in this solo episode of the People Solve Problems podcast. Jamie emphasizes the importance of being tool-agnostic in problem-solving, focusing on approaches that work both within and beyond specific methodologies. He addresses a common leadership mistake that affects problem-solving culture: leaders often keep their problem-solving process hidden in their heads rather than making it visible to others. He stresses that "you can't be a role model if nobody sees you do it." When leaders don't show their work, team members only see the final decision without understanding the thought process behind it. This can lead others to believe that problem-solving is purely about insight and intuition rather than rigorous analysis and frameworks. Writing things down is crucial for effective problem-solving. The act of writing engages different parts of the brain and can help break through mental blocks. He encourages listeners to start writing down problems they're stuck on, whether on a whiteboard, paper, or digital notes. This practice has proven effective for centuries through journaling, as writing changes how we think about problems. Jamie introduces his "From Stuck to Solved" approach, highlighting that getting stuck while solving problems is not only inevitable but potentially beneficial. These moments of being stuck often lead to breakthroughs and require bringing something new to the table. He shares personal experiences, including his work as an automotive design engineer on the Plymouth Prowler, where perseverance was key to finding solutions. Drawing inspiration from historical figures, he points to Albert Einstein's problem-solving approach, which combined individual work with collaboration. Einstein's perseverance demonstrated that sometimes staying with a problem long enough allows solutions to emerge through sustained effort and hard work. He also discusses the importance of avoiding over-standardization in problem-solving. While organizations should have standard tools, being too rigid can lead to autopilot thinking. He suggests trying different approaches when stuck, comparing it to driving on the opposite side of the road – the discomfort makes you more observant and can lead to new insights. For listeners interested in learning more about Jamie's approach to problem-solving, they can visit his website at jflinch.com or connect with him on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamieflinchbaugh/. Through her diverse experience, she's witnessed many intelligent children struggle due to inappropriate instruction, leading to frustration, anxiety, and sometimes behavioral problems. This realization sparked her passion to explore the Science of Reading, an area that was often neglected in traditional education systems. Alyson understood that these children weren't struggling because they weren't smart or trying hard enough, but because the educational approach just wasn't aligned with their unique learning styles. Determined to change this, she set out to create The Learning Lab, a place where children's learning styles were acknowledged and embraced. Known for being a mover and a shaker, her primary mission is to uncover how each child learns best and then devise a tailored plan to help them experience success.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOW NOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode114

Math is all around us. When it comes to teaching it, the challenge lies not in creating the opportunities, but in recognizing them. Counting grapes while they disappear is a fun one! Around the age of 4, a child's mathematical knowledge takes a big leap forward. They go from counting and recognizing numbers, to understanding 1:1 correspondence and being able to complete simple addition. As parents, we can support them in this leap by providing things to count, line up, and compare. Lovevery's Montessori Math Bars & Number Tiles for months 43-45 are a great place to start. On this episode, My New Life Host Jessica Rolph is joined by the principal investigator for Boston College's Thinking and Learning Lab, which studies cognitive development with a primary focus on mathematical knowledge: Dr. Elida Laski. Dr. Laski is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Montessori Research.   Takeaways: By supporting early math, we're activating the same pathways in the brain that will support literacy. For example, knowing that the symbol 3 refers to three objects is the same thing a child has to do in early reading when they look at an arbitrary combination of lines that represent a B and know that it makes the sound buh.    Beyond learning the numbers, exposing children to early visual repeating patterns like red, blue, red, blue, also builds a foundation for later math learning.    There's research that shows that labeling the count set after you've counted with your child can make a big difference. So don't just count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and assume your child knows that represents five. Go the extra step, and say: “So we have five pegs.” This concept is demonstrated in the Lovevery wooden counting box.   The Lovevery Montessori math bars not only show that numbers represent a larger quantity as you move up the count sequence, but also visually show how much more. You can reinforce this in the day-to-day, by asking your child: How many more floors do we have to go to get to number 6?   Rather than leaning on tools like flashcards, Elida recommends more authentic math activities, where you're: counting real things; comparing who has more crackers, who has fewer; and placing things in order so that you can see their relation to the count sequence.    Mentioned in this episode: Brought to you by Lovevery.com Receive weekly emails about your child's development, and stay in the know about new play essentials, promos, and more by signing up at Lovevery.com Follow Lovevery and Jessica Rolph on Instagram

Here's a sobering thought: The older we get, the harder it is for us to learn, to question, to reimagine. This isn't just habit hardening into dogma. It's encoded into the way our brains change as we age. And it's worsened by an intellectual and economic culture that prizes efficiency and dismisses play.Alison Gopnik is a professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, where she runs the Cognitive Development and Learning Lab; she's also the author of over 100 papers and half a dozen books, including “The Gardener and the Carpenter” and “The Philosophical Baby.” What I love about her work is she takes the minds of children seriously. The child's mind is tuned to learn. They are, she writes, the R. & D. departments of the human race. But a mind tuned to learn works differently from a mind trying to exploit what it already knows. So instead of asking what children can learn from us, perhaps we need to reverse the question: What can we learn from them?In this conversation, recorded in April 2021, Gopnik and I discuss the way children think, the cognitive reasons social change so often starts with the young, and the power of play. We talk about why Gopnik thinks children should be considered an entirely different form of Homo sapiens, the crucial difference between “spotlight” consciousness and “lantern” consciousness, why “going for a walk with a 2-year-old is like going for a walk with William Blake,” what A.I. researchers are borrowing from human children, the effects of different types of meditation on the brain and more.Book recommendations:Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice SendakMary Poppins in the Park by P.L.
