The view of the open playa, art cars gliding past, and mini dust tornadoes swirling around created a unparalleled backdrop to open that Wednesday for the Distrikt x Robot Heart link up — elegantly highlighting our vibrant Burning Man community. Burning Man: where each year brings a whirlwind of adventures, surprises, and moments that stick with you long after the dust settles. And in the midst of all that chaos, there's DISTRIKT; an oasis of fun and entertainment that looks straight from a Mad Max movie gone wild, takes the Burning Man experience to a whole new level. My inaugural gig at DISTRIKT two years back was a textbook case of Burning Man madness. Picture this: a monstrous sandstorm sweeping across the playa, me wandering around lost on my bike, fashionably late to my own set. But did DISTRIKT panic? Nah. They greeted me with a fresh smoothie to kickstart my DJing journey amidst the swirling dust. Classic! Fast forward to my most recent escapade at DISTRIKT, and Mother Nature decided to throw a curveball — cue the floodwaters!! Yet, the flood came fashionably late, conveniently after my set. But that night? Dehydration was the name of the game. AND my Traktor, bless its digital soul, decided it wasn't in the mood to play nice with the mixer. And there I was, parched AF like a desert plant, with everyone and their playa cousins offering me water tequila while I attempted to update the mixer driver in a haze of confusion, and of course, the DISTRIKT gang was there on top of the whole process to get me up and running - literally and musically. In true playa fashion the show must go on. Cue the backup USBs swooping in to save the day. And just when I thought it couldn't get any wilder, in strolls Diplo himself, ready to unveil our collaborative masterpiece ‘Anthem' to the world (although at the time we did't have name for it yet). But wait, there's more — did you know those dusty X1 Traktor controllers could go wireless? Neither did I, until Diplo schooled me, adding cowbells to our track live like a mad musical scientist. So without further ado, here's a glimpse into that glorious night before the floods—a sonic journey through the madness and magic of DISTRIKT at Burning Man. A prime memory from our first Burn in 2019 is dancing at DISTRIKT for a Robot Heart tie-up with a big group of friends, full of joy and awe and acting like goofballs. That year we had camped at 10&K. Flash forward four years later, we found ourselves opening up DISTRIKT's 2023 season in their new home at 10&K. So much has changed in four years, both globally and personally as we've moved into the creation part of our electronic music journey instead of just being appreciators. One thing that hasn't changed a bit is the joy and awe we feel being present in the dust with thousands of our closest friends and bringing those memories home with us each year as fuel. Thank you to DISTRIKT for giving us the opportunity to experience such a beautiful full-circle moment. These tunes are all about setting the groove as you begin a new journey. This set is special to me, DISTRIKT has been family to me on and off playa. Being a part of the community showed me what the real reward of contributing to BM was and as an artist, playing on their stage both on playa and at fundraisers always has been incredibly satisfying. Wow! This was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. I had been working with very little rest, building our mutant vehicle, Discow, for over 4 days straight. About 20 minutes before my set, I ran over to the DISTRIKT stage, which was literally 1 minute away — the shift in energy was the biggest energy shift I've experienced in my life. A transition from sweaty, tired, & cranky dear friends to day-time playa energy at full force. I went from tired to overwhelmed, almost as if I had shot caffeine into my veins. This set is a representation of the jolt I felt in that moment — catalyzed by the vibrant, dusty dance floor and its kindred spirits. What an incredible experience! Commanding the rave at DISTRIKT has been a decade long dream of ours that finally came true this year. DISTRIKT was on absolute fire going into the night - a new chapter in the DISTRIKT saga. It was a real honor for us to close out Tuesday after the legendary Robot Heart tie-up. We came in ready to peak surrounded by all our Miki Beach family. This debut set is fast paced and charged with energy to launch the rave into Deep Playa oblivion. It was an exhilarating experience to bring our Miami flavor to DISTRIKT for its inaugural night program, a Burning Man moment we will always cherish. It has been a real honor to play at Camp DISTRIKT for the very first time in a year of complete novelty for several reasons: a new location right on the edge of the playa with almost nothing around it, giving it a truly special feeling. Also, it was a sunset to nighttime slot that was debuted with my set and those of my colleagues... and on a day when Carl Cox and Sharam had performed before me. A real challenge. That's DISTRIKT—once the first track plays, the crowd's energy takes over and the session flows effortlessly. An absolute delight. Since first attending Burning Man in 2010, DISTRIKT has always been a go-to party during the day when you wanted to just let go and let your freak flag fly. Always a good time, I have had many hot sweaty days here dancing in the sun and enjoying all the beauty it has to offer. When I was asked to play this past year, I was elated that they wanted me back. Being able to play for such a quintessential sound camp is such an honor and humbling experience. It pushes me as an artist and makes me work extra hard cause, you know you have to bring the vibes when you hit the decks. For this year I wanted to do something special, and I chose to play more than 50% original unreleased material as well as new music from my label. It was such an amazing feeling seeing people get down to music that I produced, I'm forever grateful for the experience. I just want to give a huge thank you to Ben, the whole DISTRIKT crew, my friends, and all the people who were there who made this day unforgettable. Getting to play for DISTRIKT was definitely something on my bucket list. I have been attending Burning man for 7 years each year I definitely spend some decent amount of time raving at DISTRIKT always hoping to play the following year, so finally when Ben asked me to play I was super excited. I had the best time playing! the sound is incredible and the vibe is like nothing else. Hopefully, this will be the first of many playing at Distrikt
2019 was my 5th Burning Man, with 2010 being my first. Distrikt was already one of the top sound camps in BRC almost a decade ago & a place I've spent many an hour kicking up the dust with friends over the years. It was therefore of course an honor & a privilege to play at Distrikt this year where I played from 3pm - 4:30pm on the Thursday afternoon. With the crowd just starting to build before I went on I decided to drop the energy back a little to establish a solid groove and start the fun journey that would build the vibes appropriately for all that was to follow that afternoon. Finally arriving to Black Rock City just hours before this set, I had the honor playing at my long time neighborhood camps, Distrikt. The set began in the blistering hot 100 degree sun with only about 100 people at the camp. Having been my 3rd time playing there I was super excited to be able to sound the Mack truck horn located in the DJ booth after big breakdowns of these tracks, only to learn that the horn wasn't there. Apparently the horn was stolen --- a result of a rivalry joke played on Distrikt by the infamous Space Cowboys. I'll never forget the look on Kramer's face when he realized the horn was gone. He spent forever trying to fix it. By the end of the set there was probably about 1000+ people rocking it out, and to have been a part of that progression was mind-blowing. I hope you enjoy this journey through the big room daytime sound that is Distrikt. Now here's a little story I got to tell About three Sleazy Savos you know so well. It started way back when we Rocked the Bottom With Maud’deep, Private Sassface, and me, Captain C. Been had a little camp at 9:00 & I Just us and a tipi and a cube of Coors. Playing lots of beats, dust blowin’ in the streets They be dancing on art cars 'cause we’re clearly just that sweet. Lookin' for a girl, I ran into a guy His name is Wayme Woomis, I said, "Howdy," he said, "Hi." He told a little story that sounded well rehearsed 10 years on the playa – his camp rocks it in the dust. The Coors was in my hand and he didn’t seem too mean So it’s time to do a shotgun – stabbed four beers and made a scene. He said, "Do you like beats?" I said, "Yeah, we like beats." He had a chance to run, instead we booked to the fun We came around the corner, I thought I'd lost my head He pointed to the crowd, passed the ‘phones and then he said: "Now my name is Wayne Woomis, and these are our decks I think you know what time it is, I say what the heck! Now what do we have here? Three Savos and their beers? Distrikt runs this land, you understand? I made myself clear." We stepped into the wind, he had a horn, I had a grin You think this story's over but it's ready to begin. “Now I got the horn and you got the tunes There’s really one choice of what you can do. It's not a tough decision as you can see I will blow the horn while you drop the beat.” We said, "We'll rage with you and all of your crew Been waiting for this moment since two thousand and two.” We did it like this, We did it like that We even did it with ‘stache covered hats So that’s about it, but now it’s five years later Ben Seagren, DJ Kramer, Piper Hook – all saviors. 2013 was one of my most fun years on the playa and one of the contributing factors to that was being invited to play a set at DISTRIKT. I tried to combine the deep techy style of music I have been known for with the upbeat atmosphere that surrounds DISTRIKT. The best part about paying DISTRIKT is that you not only play to the crowd there but you also play to the neighborhood surrounding the legendary camp. Was Really excited to play again for Distrikt this year. Jamie Shwabl and AdamRoss started the day out nicely with some slower and deeper stuff. Then I had a blast playing some of my favorite music- mixing between deep, techy, funky, electro and classic BUMPIN HOUSE MUSIC. I definitely appreciate that the DISTRIKT crew mixes it up with a nice variety of DJ's and isn't focused on booking headliners all week. It's great that they mix a few headliners in (& was sweet to hear Thugfucker (Holmar) there on Friday. And That Funktion One they brought this year was REALLY NICE and CRISP. Music was a huge part of Burning Man for me this year, even moreso than usual. I got to spend some time at other favorite sound camps, and I spent most evenings DJ'ing on assorted mutant vehicles. It's definitely the VIP treatment for playa viewing. Of course I saved my best stuff for my DISTRIKT set, which came late afternoon on Saturday. The crowd at DISTRIKT was incredible, ignited by great weather and awesome sound.
