Commentary and analysis by Dan Smigrod Founder and Managing Editor We Get Around Network Forum and WGAN-TV Podcast Here are nine thoughts on the Matterport layoffs announced on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 – around 170 employees … 30 percent of the company – by the end of 2023. Matterport Service Providers – Matterport Service Providers (MSPs) are unlikely to notice a difference, including Matterport Support requests. Matterport Partners – Matterport Partners are unlikely to notice a difference (except fewer Matterport Partners recruited as a result of fewer Matterport Partner business development sales people.) Unfortunately, Matterport is likely focused on “How do we generate revenue from Matterport Partners?” rather than “How do we create value for the Matterport ecosystem to raise all boats?” Matterport Employees – Remaining Matterport employees are likely wondering why management took so long to reduce or eliminate redundancies created by the acquisition of VHT Studios [though VHT Studios employees are likely those that stay (since they have subject matter expertise in residential real estate]; and by international expansion in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) with separate fiefdoms. (My heart goes out to those let go. If you are one of those affected, keep in mind that when one door closes, other doors open and as a Matterport former employee, you will likely end up with a position that takes advantage of your expertise and you will likely be paid more.) Letting go 30 percent of its workforce may make Matterport recruiting challenging going forward. Matterport Competitors – Matterport competitors for residential real estate will continue to make inroads where “good enough” is good enough. For clarification, as I have previously discussed, Matterport's sweet spot is spatial data at scale for enterprise. For many real estate agents, spatial data may not matter: they just want a 360 virtual tour to make that point with potential listing clients. Three-Sixty virtual tours can often be shot faster than a Matterport digital twin and thus cost less from a MSP. In the AEC space, Matterport also faces competition: either capture that can be done 20 times faster such as “walking” a construction site weekly with a 360 camera (using photogrammetry or videogrammetry to construct a 3D model); or the Level of Detail (LOD) needed exceeds what the Matterport Pro3 Camera or Leica BLK360 scanner are capable of providing. Matterport Technology – About Matterport technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) meets spatial data continues to be THE story for Matterport. Matterport AI recent “coming soon” announcements – such as Matterport Genesis announced on June 14, 2023 and Property Intelligence (anything with counting assets) announced on April 7, 2023 and Intelligent Digital Twins – are so significant, they are reasons why enterprises considering digital twin options should seriously consider Matterport (for what is coming, rather than what is). Matterport Investors – For Matterport investors, while Matterport's stock received an initial “sucker rally” bump when it announced the layoffs on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, I have concern about the Matterport executive team selling stock, as indicated by recent SEC filings. More than 50 percent of Matterport stockholders are individual investors according to Simply Wall Street in a post today (Monday, July 17, 2023). Matterport Headwind – I have always thought – and written about – Matterport trying to do too much at one time. It's super-hard to innovate when you are expanding in multiple verticals, multiple countries, multiple SDK/Reseller Partners, multiple languages and adding government sales channels. Each initiative requires tech sources. Setting priorities can be challenging. In 2019, Jotform Founder and CEO Aytekin Tank succinctly summarized this as, “When a company tries to do too much too soon, they spread themselves too thin, muddling their purpose and overextending resources. They end up with a handful of okay products or features instead of one done really well.” Matterport competitors are often focused on one vertical such as residential real estate or construction of commercial spaces. As a result, Matterport competitors are often innovating at a much faster pace. Just two examples are: 1) Matterport floor plan view that should be the Matterport schematic floor plan; and 2) a mini-map view should show where the viewer is within the model. (These should be core features of Matterport: not relying on third-party platforms to offer these solutions.) Matterport Competes with Its Customers – Matterport competes with its customers - such as Matterport Service Providers with its Capture Services On Demand business and VHT Studios and with its Matterport Partner distributors (by selling direct and via Amazon). It's unlikely the layoffs will affect Matterport continuing to compete with its customers. (Matterport is also likely using its customers' models to train its AI, which may give some potential clients angst.) Matterport Capture Gaps – While Matterport added capture solutions at the high-end (Matterport Pro3 Camera) and low-end (Matterport AXIS smartphone rotator), Matterport is missing capture solutions, including: 1) capture while walking a space at a fast pace (high and low end capture) and 2) autonomous drone capture of indoor spaces. When Matterport announced the layoffs, it also announced its priority of reaching profitability in 2024 which is likely to compete with hardware R&D. Today (Monday, July 17, 2023), Matterport has just five job openings: none involving R&D or hardware. On this episode of the AAP Podcast, lead portfolio manager Chris Versace chats with Brian Roth, CEO of solar equipment company Three Sixty Solar. We've had several AAP member questions about solar and that was one of the factors in our chat with Brian. We were also intrigued by how Three Sixty is approaching the solar market from a design and revenue model perspective. But Brian's comments about supply chains and potential revenue bundling really caught our attention and you'll want to hear why Three Sixty is poised to benefit from the EV charging station buildout. As we draw several insights from the Three Sixty conversation, we would note the company is pre-revenue and for this reason, we simply cannot get involved through the AAP portfolio. However, as Brian mentions, Three Sixty is addressing a few pain points we will keep them on our long-term radar screen.

What a pleasure it was to have Hamish Stuart as a guest on my show. Hamish is probably most famous for his singing with the Average White Band "Let's Go Around Again" and "Pick Up The Pieces". An absolute Legend and he tealks about his life growing up in music and where the music industry took him. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Stuart attended Queens Park School in Glasgow and left to form his first professional band 'The Dream Police'. He recorded a couple of singles with the Dream Police, before he was invited to join the recently formed Average White Band (AWB) in June 1972. A member of AWB from 1972 to 1982, he went on to work with Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and David Sanborn. He wrote Atlantic Starr's 1986 hit "If Your Heart Isn't in It" and songs for Smokey Robinson, Jeffrey Osborne, George Benson and Diana Ross. Stuart joined Paul McCartney's band (where he switched between guitar and bass as necessary with McCartney) for McCartney's 1989 comeback album, Flowers in the Dirt, and appearing on several other albums and McCartney's world tours of 1989 and 1993. In 2006, Stuart toured as the bass player with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. He joined Starr again for a 2008 tour, where he performed "Pick Up The Pieces" and "Work to Do".[2] He once again toured with the band in 2019 playing "Pick Up the Pieces", "Work to Do", and "Cut the Cake". In 2007, he produced and appeared as a guest vocalist on the album All About the Music, by The AllStars collective. In July 2015, Stuart reunited with his AWB bandmates Malcolm "Molly" Duncan and Steve Ferrone to form The 360 Band. This is in essence one third of the original Average White Band. They released an album titled Three Sixty in 2017 and have been performing live together along with supporting musicians. **Explicit Permission to play the interview and his songs from his album "Sooner Or Later" All Rights Reserved.** --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message

Why Matterport will Build/Sell a Leica BLK360 Clone for Less Than $7,500 Commentary and Analysis by Dan Smigrod Founder and Managing Editor We Get Around Network Forum WGAN-TV Live at 5 WGAN-TV Training U (in Matterport) Every Matterport media release begins with the statement: “Matterport, Inc. … the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world.” Yet, the Matterport vision is hard to live up to when its flagship capture solution, the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera, falls short delivering on the Matterport spatial data promise. For example, the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera infrared technology can not create: 1. spatial data of outdoor exterior building fascias 2. spatial data of high ceilings more than a couple stories tall 3. spatial data with the Level of Detail (LOD) needed for many commercial real estate spaces and AEC use cases And, while the Leica BLK360 LiDAR scanner, paired with the Matterport Capture app, does all of the above, its $18,000 price point is simply too high (and capturing spatial data too slow) to create a nationwide network - let alone a worldwide network – of Matterport Service Providers with the necessary gear required for scanning much of the built world. That's a big-big-big problem for Matterport. Given Matterport's ambitious plans for its Matterport Capture Services™ On-Demand program - now in 152 cities among seven countries - I could imagine Matterport is missing a massive number of opportunities because its network of “trained and certified Capture Technicians” can not afford an essential tool for capturing spatial data of large commercial spaces (including building exterior fascias) with high ceiling with the LOD required, for example, for: 1. As-Builts (the first step in documenting the life-cycle of a to-be-renovated commercial space) 2. construction documentation (to compare to a BIM model) 3. critical measurements In addition to Matterport Capture Services On-Demand, I could imagine companies such as IFTI/PROvision Solutions which offers Matterport scanning at scale across the United States for as-builts; construction progress documentation; and facilities management; Snappr for Enterprise and other companies that provide Matterport On-Demand services, have the same challenge of sourcing a Network of Matterport Service Providers that own – or are willing to rent – a Leica BLK360 LiDAR scanner. For example, in the last few months, I noticed a pain point/opportunity for IFTI/PROvision Solutions: a significant uptick in IFTI/PROvision Solutions Help Wanted posts in the We Get Around Network Forum specifically for Matterport Service Providers that use a Leica BLK360 for scanning large commercial spaces. (Commentary and Analysis by We Get Around Network Forum Founder and Managing Editor Dan Smigrod continues in the We Get Around Network Forum (www.WGANForum.com) https://forum.we-get-around.com/topic/16349/page/1/why-matterport-will-buildsell-a-leica-blk360-clone-for-less-than-7500/

When you’re so busy being strong and achieving, the richness of life that comes from the ordinary moments can slip by unnoticed. For Tamu Thomas, that busyness turned into increasing anxiety and panic attacks, leading her to realise she was living her life “upside down”, always putting herself last. Having come from 15 years in social work, she was knowledgeable enough to know things had to change – but how she went about it was not as you might expect. Tamu is now a trauma-informed somatic and holistic life coach, specialising in supporting women approaching their 40s and beyond to transition into their midlife feeling safe, calm and peaceful. In this episode of the podcast, Tamu shares deeply about the lessons she’s learned, from experiences as a child, through to her adult career and transition to her business, Three Sixty. We talk about: * the shift she felt when she took time to slow down and focus on her everyday joys * why we’re so used to feeling fear and how to welcome in more joy * why Tamu chose to educate herself and listen to her body, instead of the prescribed talking therapy approach * how her experience of grief helped her expand her capacity for joy, and why tending to and befriending your feelings is so important For more details, episodes and shownotes: www.thedaisypatch.co.uk/episode70.

Welcome to episode 91. I am joined by Nicky Clinch, Maturation Coach & Facilitator, Spiritual Mentor, CEO & Entrepreneur. Her mission in life is to help people break free of the confines of their past traumas, self-defeating patterns and suffering so that they can realise, and come home to, who they truly are. Nicky shares how maturation supports us to be present with and heal trauma so that the wounded stop inflicting wounds on the wounded. We speak candidly on how this work helps people dismantle racism, become actively anti-racist and close the gap on separation. There are many mic drop moments in this conversation about the messiness that is coming home to alignment. Full show notes including resources and people mentioned here.
In this episode we talk about the 361 all things Nonpoint Facebook group with non other than that Nonpoint Guy. Shaun Reinert.
In this week's episode I'm talking with Tamu Thomas, founder of Three Sixty, a wellness brand aimed at women in their late thirties and forties. Tamu delivers her work through holistic life coaching, group work, public speaking, podcasting and writing. Her passion is helping women find their joy. What does joy mean to you? In her late 30s, Tamu's life was turned upside down by an existential crisis. After years of confusing achievement with fulfilment, she began to think about life differently and journeyed back towards joy. Today, Tamu describes joy as a calm, peaceful, contented space where we notice small beautiful things that are so often hidden in plain sight when we're too busy running around. We discuss: - What joy is to her - Her experience of anxiety and depression - Productivity addiction - Self-kindness and compassion - What she's teaching her daughter - The one gift she'd give all mums
Stories surround all of us, and the way they are told shapes how we make decisions in both conscious and unconscious ways. What influences the stories we see and hear? Whose voices are heard the most and who is being left out? In this episode we examine these questions through the work of ThreeSixty Journalism, a nonprofit that uses principles of strong writing, reporting and media production to help diverse Minnesota youth tell the stories of their lives and communities. For the second year in a row, during the summer of 2018, ThreeSixty and the Center for Prevention partnered together to conduct a one-week TV Broadcast Camp for high school students. The theme was health equity, with the goal of inspiring more active participation in creating more equitable, healthier communities. This work illustrates how changing the narrative, who is telling stories and how they are created, is an integral part of this goal.
