Stone Temple Pilots, often abbreviated as STP, burst onto the rock scene in the early 1990's, becoming one of the most commercially successful bands of that era. Their debut album, Core, was released in late September 1992, and we're highlighting it in January 1993 when many of their hits were on the charts. The DeLeo brothers form the heart of the band: Dean DeLeo's guitar work provides the sonic foundation, and Robert DeLeo's bass playing adds a groove to the band's sound. Eric Kretz anchors the rhythm section on percussion. And front man Scott Weiland completes the lineup with his charismatic presence and distinctive vocal style. Weiland's emotion and raw energy helped make "Core" a pivotal release in the grunge movement."Core" hit he airwaves with a sonic explosion, with an energy that captured the angst and spirit of the early 90's grunge movement. Several tracks from this album would become anthems of the 90's generation, led by tracks like "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing." Despite its commercial success (reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200), "Core" was initially met with poor critical reviews, with many critics considering it too derivative of other grunge artists like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Over time, however, "Core" would receive more positive reviews as it took its place as a seminal release of the grunge movement.Lynch takes us on this journey back to 1993, when the Stone Temple Pilots were introducing themselves to the world. CreepThis song is a slower, more introspective track that highlights the band's grunge influences. The lyrics deal with feelings of isolation and alienation, with Weiland delivering a haunting vocal performance. The acoustic arrangement is a nice contrast to the heavier tracks of the album.Sex Type ThingThe opening track to the album features an aggressive guitar riff and a powerful vocal performance from Weiland. It was controversial due to its lyrical content, which is written from the perspective of a rapist. Despite the controversy (or perhaps because of it) “Sex Type Thing” became one of STP's most recognized songs.PlushThis track is arguably the most famous song from the album. “Plush” showcases STP's softer side with its acoustic guitar intro and catchy chorus. Weiland's lyrics were inspired by a news story about a woman who was found dead in San Diego, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue to the song. The video for "Plush" won the band an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and features the band playing in various desert scenes.Wicked GardenA hard-hitting rock track known for its gritty guitar riff and energetic chorus, this may be considered a deeper cut. The song deals with the loss of innocence and the darker side of human nature, themes that recur throughout the album. Over time “Wicked Garden” has become a fan favorite and a staple of STP's live shows. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme to Star Trek: Deep Space NineThe third entry into the Star Trek franchise takes place on a fixed space station near the border of the Federation. It had its debut in January of 1993. STAFF PICKS:Love Is On the Way by Saigon KickBruce leads off the staff picks with a one hit wonder. Miami-based Saigon Kick released this single from their second album, "The Lizard," and it went to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jason Bieler provides guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals for the band, and wrote this song. Lead vocals are provided by Matt Kramer. Additional band members were Tom DeFile on bass and Phil Varone on percussion. Regret by New OrderRob brings us the lead song from New Order's sixth studio album, "Republic." The single went to number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. New Order formed from the remnants of the band Joy Division. The album was made in order to save the Hacienda - a Manchester club part owned by the band. Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now) by CrackerWayne's staff pick is from Cracker's debut album, and features catchy, clever, ironic songs. The lyrics take a swipe at late 80's and early 90's folk rock songs. Interestingly, the lyrics do not include the words "Teen Angst." The track got airplay on alternative radio stations, and went to number 1 on the new Billboard "Modern Rock" chart. All Apologies by NirvanaLynch closes out the staff picks with one of Nirvana's most poignant and introspective works from their third and final studio album "In Utero." Songwriter and front man Kurt Cobain describes the song as a tribute to his wife and daughter, but it took on significance as a farewell note of sorts after Cobain's death. COMEDY TRACK:Bedrock Anthem by "Weird Al" YankovicWeird Al channels a couple of well-known songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers for this prehistoric parody. In this Podcast, Sid Patel, CEO of Beverage Trade Network, takes you on a behind-the-scenes journey into the business of managing Mainstreet Wines & Spirits. He is in a conversation with the store's wine director, Nancy Sabatini, where they chat on a range of topics, from inventory management to marketing strategies. Nancy discusses all aspects of the business and provides insights into what it takes to succeed in this industry. Whether you're a current wine & spirits store owner looking to increase profits or someone interested in opening a store, this video is a must-watch. ***About Nancy Sabatini*** She is passionate about all things connected with wine. Nancy has been called a "wine geek," and rightfully so! Agreeing with Matt Kramer from Wine Spectator... "Though we may not necessarily think of it this way, a really good wine retailer is actually as much a 'sommelier' as anyone who glides to your table with a wine list in hand. Now, by saying a really good retailer I'm not talking about just anyone who happens to sell wine. You want, well, a geek. Somebody who's just a little nuts about wine, who regularly offers wines that you've never heard of or tried." This is the model she has instilled in every one of her wine positions.

This week is our 21st installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of another band that fits into our category of being an “in-betweener”: the amazingly awesome SAIGON KICK! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. Like their touring buddies Extreme, they got a major hit with a ballad in the early 90s and got pigeonholed as a ballad band when they weren't that at all. We think this band should have been alongside Alice In Chains and STP… They Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show before and exist in a category that we discussed at length back in Episode 133 – The Inbetweeners. They're from Robert's home state of Florida, but will our Florida-Man agree with Kevin's assessment and status of “Shoulda Been Huge”??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Saigon Kick – “Coming Home” from Saigon Kick (1991)Saigon Kick – “Hostile Youth” from The Lizard (1992)Saigon Kick – “On And On” from Water (1993)Saigon Kick – “Eden” from Devil In The Details (1995)Saigon Kick - “Dizzy's Vine” from Moments From The Fringe (1997)Saigon Kick – “Solitary Jerk” from Bastards (1999)Super Transatlantic – “Shuttlecock” from Shuttlecock (2000)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Cool interpretability between native threads and asyncio Using subprocesses: AnyIO allows you to run arbitrary executables in subprocesses, either as a one-shot call or by opening a process handle for you that gives you more control over the subprocess. Async file I/O: AnyIO provides asynchronous wrappers for blocking file operations. These wrappers run blocking operations in worker threads. Cool synchronization primitives too. Build an outline with times This part often seems scary, but Reuven's example is 10 bullets with (x min) notes. Write up a summary. One short, one longer. You could probably use it for a lot of the reasons people turn to something like Celery. The lead developer (Adam Hopkins) has written a blog post about this feature. A discussion between Glyph and Hynek in 2015 about where to take the idea. attrs popularity takes off in 2016 after a post by Glyph: The One Python Library Everyone Needs In 2017 people started wanting something like attrs in std library. Thus PEP 557 and dataclasses. Hynek, Eric Smith, and Guido discuss it at PyCon US 2017. dataclasses, with a subset of attrs functionality, was introduced in Python 3.7. Types take off. attrs starts supporting type hints as well, even before Python 3.7 Post 3.7, some people start wondering if they still need attrs, since they have dataclasses. @define, field() and other API improvements came with attrs 20.1.0 in 2020. attrs 21.3.0 released in December, with what Hynek calls “Modern attrs”. OG attrs: import attr @attr.s class Point: x = attr.ib() y = attr.ib() modern attrs: from attr import define @define class Point: x: int y: int Many reasons to use attrs listed in Why not…, which is an excellent read. why not dataclasses? less powerful than attrs, intentionally attrs has validators, converters, equality customization, … attrs doesn't force type annotation if you don't like them slots on by default, dataclasses only support slots in Python 3.10 and are off by default attrs can and will move faster See also comparisons with pydantic, named tuples, tuples, dicts, hand-written classes Matt #3: Crafting Interpreters Wanting to learn more about how Python works “under the hood”, I first read Anthony Shaw's CPython internals book A fantastic, detailed overview of how CPython is implemented Since I don't have a formal CS background, I found myself wanting to learn a bit more about the fundamentals Parsing, Tokenization, Bytecode, data structures, etc. Crafting Interpreters is an incredible book by Bob Nystrom (on Dart team at Google) Although not Python, you walk through the implementation of a dynamic, interpreted language from scratch Implement same language (called lox) in two interpreters First a direct evaluation of Abstract Syntax Tree, written in Java Second is a bytecode interpreter, written from the ground up in C, including a compiler Every line of code is in the book, it is incredibly well-written and beautifully rendered I highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about language design & implementation Michael #4: Yamele - A schema and validator for YAML via Andrew Simon A basic schema: name: str() age: int(max=200) height: num() awesome: bool() And some YAML that validates: name: Bill age: 26 height: 6.2 awesome: True Take a look at the Examples section for more complex schema ideas. ⚠️ Ensure that your schema definitions come from internal or trusted sources. Yamale does not protect against intentionally malicious schemas. Brian #5: pympler Inspired by something Bob Belderbos wrote about sizes of objects, I think. “Pympler is a development tool to measure, monitor and analyze the memory behavior of Python objects in a running Python application. By pympling a Python application, detailed insight in the size and the lifetime of Python objects can be obtained. Undesirable or unexpected runtime behavior like memory bloat and other “pymples” can easily be identified.” 3 separate modules for profiling asizeof module provides basic size information for one or several Python objects muppy is used for on-line monitoring of a Python application Class Tracker provides off-line analysis of the lifetime of selected Python objects. asizeof is what I looked at recently In contrast to sys.getsizeof, asizeof sizes objects recursively. You can use one of the asizeof functions to get the size of these objects and all associated referents: >>> from pympler import asizeof >>> obj = [1, 2, (3, 4), 'text'] >>> asizeof.asizeof(obj) 176 >>> print(asizeof.asized(obj, detail=1).format()) [1, 2, (3, 4), 'text'] size=176 flat=48 (3, 4) size=64 flat=32 'text' size=32 flat=32 1 size=16 flat=16 2 size=16 flat=16 “Function flatsize returns the flat size of a Python object in bytes defined as the basic size plus the item size times the length of the given object.” Matt #6: hvPlot Interactive hvPlot is a high-level plotting API that is part of the PyData ecosystem, built on HoloViews My colleague Phillip Rudiger recently gave a talk at PyData Global on a new .interactive feature Here's an announcement in the HoloViz forum Allows integration of widgets directly into pandas analysis pipeline (method-chain), so you can add interactivity to your notebook for exploratory data analysis, or serve it as a Panel app Gist & video by Marc Skov Madsen Extras Michael: Typora app, recommended! Going in a little different direction for episode 2 of this new season! It's still winter, and so I decided to pick one of my favorite winter albums: In the Nightside Eclipse by Norwegian black metal giants Emperor. Joining me to talk about this beautiful album is my friend, black metal fan, and former record store co-worker, Matt Kramer. We talk about the reasons this album stands out from its peers, the black metal image, Tolkien and his inspiration on this album, and more. Combining beautiful symphonic and atmospheric sounds with harsh, cold, black metal music, In the Nightside Eclipse moved black metal to new heights and inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of new artists to do the same.
Ryan is joined by Matt Kramer and Ryan Musser to talk about one of the most iconic rock albums of all time: Led Zeppelin IV. Selling over 37 million copies, this album made the already famous Led Zeppelin global megastars and ensured their dominance over 1970s rock music. Mysterious, bluesy, steeped in mythology and folklore (and a lot of Tolkien references), Led Zeppelin IV not only remains one of Zeppelin's best works of art, but one of the most celebrated albums in music history.
On this episode of SIP Virtual Wine Tasting with Winemakers we talked to Vintner Susan McNerney of Le Chanceux in Napa Valley. Sue shared the story of moving to Coombsville and planting grapes with a simple plan to provide for their three daughters and retire, talked about the sudden passing of her husband Bob, paying it forward and creating premium, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon that even Matt Kramer of Wine Spectator advocates for. At the end of the show Sue unveiled a special offer for our viewers.
The Decanter Wine Awards is an annual event where thousands (maybe 10s of thousands) of wines are evaluated, scored, and awarded medals: "Now in its 16th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world's largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by the top wine experts from around the globe, the DWWA is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process." Andrew Jefford is a judge. He lives in the south of France and writes for a wide spectrum of news platforms (he also writes and contributes to books) on topics from spirits to port. Here is what Robert Parker said of Andrew Jefford: “One of my favorite wine journalists, and a guy who is up in the top echelon with Matt Kramer and Jancis Robinson….Andrew Jefford, has an exceptionally fair and balanced piece on the free Decanter magazine website called….”Wither Tasting Notes”….most people would think this goes to the heart and soul of many wine magazines, blogs, etc. but he ,as he usually does, analyzes it in a rational way, something often missing in winespeak. BTW, his books, which I have consistently recommended, are another of his strengths. So heads-up.” This episode is a phone conversation I had with Andrew in early August 2020. He shares his impressions of the impacts of COVID on wine judging, wine trends (the explosion of PINK wine), and the effects of climate change. Apologies for the sound quality and the transmission breaks. I have stitched it together so to minimize interruptions.
What are the issues payers are facing with COVID-19? Who is being tested? What are the long-term effects? This week Jackie Lee chats with Doug Norris, Matt Kramer, and Pamela Pelizzari about their recent publication COVID-19: Health cost issues for U.S. healthcare payers now and in the days ahead.
The COVID-19 pandemic will have far-reaching implications for both short- and long-term healthcare costs in the U.S., as Milliman consultants Pamela Pelizzari, Stoddard Davenport, Doug Norris, and Matt Kramer discuss on this episode of Critical Point. For the past month, Milliman consultants have been building actuarial models to better understand what costs could look like for consumers, hospitals, and to the healthcare system overall. While there are more questions than answers at this early stage, our subject matter experts discuss the possibility that costs may in fact decrease in the short-term, as people avoid non-essential healthcare services.

Join us and special guests/authors Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss as we discuss the BS in the workplace and how to navigate it from an employee and leadership perspective. Managing in a place of fear causes failure, managing from a place of love (yes, even in the workplace) creates a thriving environment! Check out our authors/guest info: B. S. Incorporated is a new book by Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss, recommended for fans of The Office and Office Space. Funny, insightful, and heartfelt, B.S., Incorporated is a feel-good story about people finding themselves and coming into their own while simultaneously skewering every aspect of life in Corporate America. It’s a book that anyone in the business world will get a huge kick out of… After all, every job contains a certain amount of B.S. Although it is a work of fiction, B.S. Incorporated draws from the authors’ real-life corporate experiences. “After yet another mind-numbing, daylong meeting about a project, we fled to a bar patio in the shadow of our company’s office building”, says Jennifer on the origin of the novel. “There, we drank to excess and swapped hilarious and heartbreaking tales about life in Corporate America. At that point we realized we had a story—actually, many stories—worth telling, and we pinky swore that after sobering up, we’d write a book about our experiences.” Synopsis: Business Solutions, Inc. is in a state of chaos. While the employees spend their time rendezvousing in the stairwells, the CEOs are running their business into the ground through the use of shady consultants. Will Evans, warehouse-worker-turned-white-collar-employee, is put in charge of implementing the consultants’ plans. Here he finds himself thrust into a muddle of absurdity and responsibility that he never expected. When the plans push BSI to the brink of bankruptcy, Will teams up with Anna Reed, a corporate mercenary with heels as high as her ambition. He needs her cunning and courage to pull off his covert plan to save the company. Can Anna, the consummate job jumper, find a reason to go all-in on BSI? Or is she better off bailing and letting the company go down in flames? Praise: “Anyone who has sat through a mind-numbing business meeting (and haven’t we all?) will laugh out loud." - St. Paul Pioneer Press "B.S. Incorporated stands with some of the best business novels in its genre." - Midwest Book Review "One rollicking, irreverent, 'I worked with these people' kind of read." - Business View North America Magazine “Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss have written an incredibly engaging read that will have their readers laughing uproariously and turning the pages just as quickly as they can in order to find out what happens next.” - 5 Stars, Readers’ Favorite "Funny as hell, with sharp observations and cunning insights. It reads like the best happy-hour story you've ever heard." – Matt Kramer, CEO, Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce "One of the 10 Best Business Books of 2016 -- B.S., Incorporated offers a colonoscopy of the contemporary corporate world." - Wealth Management About the Authors: Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss have had the good fortune to work for and with companies that spanned industries and impact – from privately held start-ups to Fortune 50 powerhouses to, now, their own communications agency. Both authors live near Minneapolis where they work as speakers and consultants. They have a passion for storytelling and share their best stories during happy hour. Coaching your own Kid Kevin recalls several stories of his Dad's coaching style – how inclusion of all kids was a priority ; and how his Dad pushed him to be a better team player My ‘Cringe' Moment ▪ ‘My first few years of coaching I focused on winning more than development. I don't remember the wins as much as I remember the kids that have gone on to be better players' Teaching Children & Keeping it Fun ‘The Intensity of Winning' – This is measured by hard work. Hard work is a skill that can be developed. We are going to commit to dominating our opponent through hard work. #1 skill is footwork – Balance, pivoting. Get a low chair stance. Ripping the ball, sweeping the ball. 4-Line Pivot drill – they do it every day at practice. Lots of small-sided games. You get more touches with the ball if you are 3 on 3 vs. 5 on 5. Fun game: Passing tag – have to pass the ball and ‘tag' someone. Stop, catch, pivot, then tag. Timed drill –team with the lowest time wins. Can do it with more than 5 per team. Every kid must have a ball! If you have 12 kids on the team you better have 12 balls! Best Stolen Idea Gene Durdin – Girls basketball coach at Buford H.S. in Georgia – taught Kevin: o The Breakfast Club. Ball-handling and shooting drills they do at 6 a.m. during the summer. o HUGE IDEA #1 - Pre-game warm-up – ‘How you warm-up is how you play the game.' They start with high-intensity pass-catch drill. Then 4-corner pivot drill. Fast-paced, 6 or 7 drills. Everything together (take warm-ups off together.) Part of development is players learning how to prepare to win. Coaching Resources ▪ I-practice builder – App that lets you build practice plan, and you can have video library. ▪ Coaches Eye – Can break down video in slow-motion. Be careful to show positive things when doing it as a team, then if you want to improve a specific skill with an individual ▪ 94 50 Smart Sensor basketball – Basketball that analyzes your shot ▪ Beyondthehardwood.com – Developed by Matt Kramer and Randy Montgomery – great system for developing a program Discipline ▪ Discipline starts with being prepared as a coach ▪ Coaches – speak/teach in quick short phrases: HUGE IDEA #2: 30 second/ 10 second time-outs – In the middle of a drill – call 30 second time-out – to teach a new concept The biggest discipline is to have them sit out something they enjoy Reward and Recognition ▪ ‘Practice-player of the day'; ‘Best communicator of the day' – talk your action'; ‘Charge-card award' ▪ Circle of Giving – After games(particularly a loss) is not the time to rip into your team. Kevin has each player share something they saw the person on their right do well in the game. Coaching Girls Coach them as athletes just the same as boys. But social interactions are usually more important with girls than boys so make sure you take time to develop relationships The One that Got Away Coach Furtado shares a story where he didn't handle a loss well – he learned poise Coaching/Leadership Motivation ▪ Quote: ‘Winning is a process driven by character' – Brett Ledbetter ▪ Book: ‘Competitive Drills for Winning Basketball' by Jan Lahodny

The mind-blowing parties at DISTRIKT this year were exceeded only by the teamwork, camaraderie and friendship that made them all possible. I feel like I've worn that line out since Burning Man, but it still rings true and that, more than anything else, was my big take-away from a week in the Black Rock desert with DISTRIKT. It was really something special to see such a tight-knit group of friends work so well together to achieve so much. I was not at Burning Man in 2010 and I missed the maiden voyage of the DISTRIKT camp, which by all accounts was a huge success, but as far as I can tell DISTRIKT was even better in 2011. There was a cool, sophisticated aesthetic to the camp design that had not been seen before thanks to Ronnie Altoonian. There were lavish intra-camp amenities (e.g. a huge, shaded bar complete with chandeliers [and stripper poles], camp showers with hot and cold water options, a cozy dust-free chill space known as the 'bordello' and two giant misting trees in the middle of the dance space). Thanks to the craftsmanship of Matt Kramer and many others, the camp structures like the DJ booth, the observation deck above it, the staging and dance platforms were rock solid. Thanks to the efforts of Kramer and Ben Seagren there was a well-thought-out and carefully-programmed DJ line-up that created the perfect ambience for the epic parties that took place there all week long. And then there was my good friend, Piper Hook, overseeing the whole production making sure that DISTRIKT ran like a well-oiled, playa party machine from set-up to strike. I covered a lot of ground at Burning Man this year and can honestly say that I did not experience anything even remotely close to the vibe at DISTRIKT. It was truly unique. My heartfelt thanks to everyone at DISTRIKT for sharing the camp with me this year. It was an honor and privilege to be a part of it. Track List 1.
