Western Australian metalcore outfit Make Them Suffer recently returned with their new single Doomswitch after a prolongued absence from the scene. Not only is it the band's first new music in an age, Doomswitch also sees Make Them suffer welcome new member and former Drown This City vocalist Alex Reade.Doomswitch is everything you would expect from Make Them Suffer - and more.Reade joined HEAVY to chat about the new song and how her addition to the line-up came about, starting with the early reception to the new track."Honestly, it's been so good," she smiled. "It's been such a surprise because there was so many elements to consider with the song. The band had been on a bit of a hiatus for a couple of years - because of COVID and obviously losing a member - changing a member, changing the sound a little bit, introducing a new instrument and I didn't really know how it was going to be received. I was bracing myself for a healthy amount of negative feedback, and there's none. It's so positively received where I'm sort of at the point now where I want the negative feedback (laughs)."Doomswitch is a crushingly heavy song, with Reade going more in depth as to the musical direction the band were going for."I was not involved in the songwriting for Doomswitch," Reade explained. "I came on when the song was written. There were parts written for me by Nick and Sean, who are an amazing songwriting team, so I got to come in - which was a really nice experience for me, to not have to write, and you're your own worst critic - so I think it's better than anything I've written in the past. It was a breath of fresh air to sing someone elses songwriting. Obviously we introduced the keytar in to Make Them Suffer, which is definitely fresh. In the past there's been a heavy presence with keys, but it's just been a keyboard or piano. Now I've introduced the keytar, introducing synth and samples so it's pretty cool. It's like a new experience for me stepping away from being a frontman and stepping in to being more of an instrumentalist, but I really like it."In the full interview, Alex talks more about Doomswitch, the visually stunning music video, joining Make Them Suffer and how it came about, her role in the band moving forward, her vocal sections with Sean and how they came together, their current tour, future plans and more.
Aussie metal maestros Make Them Suffer have evolved for over a decade, relentlessly honing and bolstering their unique blend of symphonic metal, progressive metal and metalcore tendancies. From their debut EP Lord of Woe released back in 2010 to their current iteration in 2022, the band have consistently stunned and enamoured, joining the likes of Architects, Parkway Drive, Thy Art Is Murder, Northlane, Chelsea Grin and countless others around the globe along the way. When the lockdowns hit Australia, resoundingly also rocking the music industry to its core, a question mark had emerged for Make Them Suffer internally as a band. And it was this very timeframe amid Melbourne's intense and restricting lockdowns that the pathway to Make Them Suffer's brand new lineup inevitably began to take shape, with guitarist Nick McLernon joining fellow Melbourne muso Alex Reade, formerly of Drown This City, on runs within the prescribed kilometer bubbles. A long-time fan of Make Them Suffer and a prolific musician in her own right, the stars aligned and a light bulb moment saw Reade recently unveiled as MTS's vocalist and keyboardist; aka, the essential and trademark "fifth member" for Make Them Suffer.Last week releasing the explosive new track Doomswitch, alongside an accompanying music video, it would be at the filming for that very video that Reade and the band were all entirely together in-person for the very first time. But now, the new exciting chapter for MTS is well in full swing, with the band performing two sold out shows in Brisbane and Sydney last weekend, with a sold out show in Melbourne tonight in Melbourne, and a final two sold out shows in Adelaide and Perth over the weekend. With symphonic flourishes, blasting beats, jagged guitars, and oscillating light and shade between frontman Sean Harmanis and Reade, Doomswitch is equally energetic and ethereal, leveling up the band's heaviness alongside emphatic melodics while presenting a resonating narrative: "It's not how you get knocked down / It's how you get back up."Performing harsh vocals in conjunction with the cleans, busting out keys and keytar and seamlessly fitting into the Make Them Suffer world, Reade's addition has been met with resounding praise from longtime fans and new fans alike. But in between touring the new track, Alex Reade stopped by Behind The Soundcheck to join host Tiana Speter, chatting renewed talents and passions, core memories, the importance of tough love and beyond. UNIFY Gathering. An experience and a half for heavy music fans who travel from all over Australia (and the world) to attend the sleepy country town of Tarwin Lower in Regional Victoria to see bands of various genres playing their hearts out and then joining in on the festivities with punters across the venue. This year was no exception. This time around for us, we brought along our Wall of Sound UNIFY Intern winner Adam Rice who took out the competition and won the chance to interview some of the bands from the lineup and enjoy a weekend covering the event for us. How'd he go? Well, you'll have to listen to the collection of interviews and tracks we have at your disposal, but be warned, there is well over 4 Hours of Fun this year (as we wanted to cover as many bands as we could for you and this podcast special). So strap yourselves in and get ready to get up close and personal with the likes of Every Time I Die, Underoath, Karnivool, Hand of Mercy, Hellions, Dream State, Ocean Grove, The Plot In You, In Hearts Wake, Pagan, Thornhill, Drown This City, Gravemind, Falcifer, Saviour and Ocean Sleeper as Browny and Intern Adam Do UNIFY Gathering 2019. If you're not on the Hellions bandwagon yet, boy you're missing out on some good quality, genre-crossing punk/alt rock. The legends from Sydney spawned from the ashes of the band The Bride (RIP) and have since bypassed and exceeded all expectations first thought, moving fast into the top position of Australia's heavy music echelon and establishing themselves as a band who are beloved by fans and critics alike. They're back with album number four Rue, which follows on from the success they had with their last release, the ARIA Award Nominated Opera Oblivia but according to drummer Anthony 'Aff' Caruso (who joins us on co-hosting duties this week), no matter how much success or attention they receive, they're still nowhere near realising the extent of their popularity. To him, they're still just four best mates, making music and trying to learn/grow as humans in the process. Their new album is fantastic and focuses on themes of self-encouragement and changing your ways to benefit your future, something we all need to take on board for the benefit of mankind. Also this week podcast host Browny discusses our MASSIVE UNIFY Intern Competition which could see you winning a Double Pass to UNIFY Gathering 2019 and the opportunity to not only cover the festival for us, but interview bands from the lineup too. There's also new music from Papa Roach, The Comfort, 23/19, Basement and Tom Morello, throwbacks from Panic! When you've been in the industry as long as **Story of the Year** have been making music you tend to pick up on a few things, most importantly, you can't just rely on selling your music to make a living. Evidence of this was made when bassist **Adam 'The Skull' Russell** departed the band back in 2014 because it was nearly impossible to play in the band (touring and recording) as well as raising a family at the same time. **SOTY** frontman **Dan** **Marsala** goes into detail about the struggles the band have faced over the years as he co-hosts this week's episode of **_Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall_** ahead of their return to Australia next week in support of their new album **_Wolves_**. The new album only made possible with the help of fans pledging money so the band could enter the studio and make the album they've wanted to for years, an idea Dan (and many fans) were sceptical about at first, but in the end, it ended up being one of the best things they've done that not only benefitted the members, but the keen and eager fans who wanted nothing more than to hear new music from the band for the first time in 7 years. He also talks to podcast host **Browny** about the possibility of bringing his punk/comedy side project **The Fuck Off And Dies** to Australia and if his days of backflipping on stage are coming to an end anytime soon. There's also plenty of New Music to get through from **Parkway Drive, Drown This City, WAAX, Eat Your Heart Out, Dream State, State Champs, Cancer Bats** and **Scars on Broadway** + throwbacks from **Bring Me The Horizon, Stick To Your Guns, Introvert, Beartooth** and heaps more #WoSUATW #StoryOfTheYear #DanMarsala #PostHardcore #MelodicHardcore #TheFuckOffAndDies #Wolves #EpitaphRecords #ParkwayDrive #Reverence #BringMeTheHorizon #BMTH #DrownThisCity #StickToYourGuns #DreamState #UNFD #AustralianBands #Introvert #Punk #PopPunk #Grunge #VoidOfVision #TheAmityAffliction #TAA #WAAX #VesperGreen #StateChamps #CancerBats #ScarsOnBroadway #Beartooth #Podcast #MusicPodcast #iTunesPodcast #SpotifyPodcasts #ApplePodcasts #WallOfSoundAU
Welcome back to Episode #25 of **_Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall_**, this week featuring two fantastic bands with albums out at the end of the week. The first guest is **Of Mice & Men** drummer **Valentino** **Arteaga** who opens up about his band's latest album **_Defy_** which marks the first record without former frontman **Austin** **Carlile** and their upcoming slot on the very first outing of **_Download Festival_** in Australia. Podcast host **Browny** also grills him to find out if he's a man or mouse in real life. Then stay tuned as **Earth** **Caller** frontman **Josh** **Collard** takes us behind the scenes of his band's new album **_Crystal Death_** and whether he thinks they'll beat **Of Mice & Men** to the #1 spot on the charts; as well as giving us an insight to the brutal inspiration behind their new single which will drop any day now. We also take a look at Josh's personal life through his musical selections as part of our new segment 'T**_wo Songs That Changed Me_**' featuring a **Queen** classic and a vintage **Amity** **Affliction** song. Talking about **Amity**, we let you know why we were hanging out backstage at **UNIFY** over the weekend, debut Brand New music for Newcastle's **Lycanthrope** and play throwbacks from **Underoath**, **Drown This City, Fall Out Boy, Parkway Drive, Rage Against The Machine** and pay tribute to the late and great **Dolores O’Riordan** who [passed away](https://wallofsoundau.com/2018/01/16/rip-dolores-oriordan-of-the-cranberries/) at the weekend. #WoSUATW #Podcast #MusicPodcast #OfMiceAndMen #OMandM #ValentinoAteaga #Defy #CrystalDeath #EarthCaller #JoshCollard #UNIFY2018 #UNIFY #UNFD #Hardcore #Metalcore #AustralianBands #DownloadFestival #DLMelb2018 #DownloadFestAU #Underoath #DeloresORiordan #TheCranberries #RageAgainstTheMachine #ParkwayDrive #Queen #TheAmityAffliction #FallOutBoy #WeTheKings #Outright #Architects #WallOfSoundAU
We were thinking it's about time we dedicate Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall to the women in heavy music who have been working away to make a living for themselves in the business and what better way to do that then with Lizi Blanco of The Beautiful Monument co-hosting Episode 18. Lizi and the girls have been touring with Tonight Alive across the east coast of Australia and first caught our eyes and ears when we reviewed Big Sound back in September. The girls also briefly appeared on our 'Best of Big Sound 2017' podcast following the event but we didn't get to go in depth with them to talk about their genre crossing album I'm The Sin which was released back in February and goddamn we're pissed we missed it. Podcast host Browny gives listeners a closer look at The Beautiful Monument and proves they're not just an exceptionally driven upcoming band, but they're also capable of writing hard hitting and thought provocative songs about touchy subjects like child slavery/neglect, drug & alcohol abuse and so much more across a wide range of intriguing styles that have to be heard to be explained. We also pay tribute to the late Chrissy Amphlet of Divinyls fame, play new music from Butcher Babies, PVRIS and Once Human plus take a look at why Drown This City have pulled the plug on touring for the rest of 2017. #WoSUATW #LiziBlanco #TheBeautifulMonument #TonightAlive #AustralianBands #Paramore #Divinyls #PVRIS #HighTension #Once Human #ButcherBabies #DrownThisCity #WallOfSoundAU
