Confronting Your Mortality With JACK BERGIN From VOID OF VISION

Melbourne metal outfit Void Of Vision have flown the flag for Australian music for over a decade; the quintessential underdog that remains humble and unassuming despite having more than enough heart to claim whatever patch of turf they, in the minds of most observers, deserved.Rather than restricting themselves and overstaying the musical welcome they built from their debut EP, 2014's Broken//Bones through to 2016's Children of Chrome, 2017's Disturbia, 2019's Hyperdaze and the amalgamated CHRONICLES series in 2023, Void Of Vision approached each new sonic cycle with the mindset of bettering themselves and their sound in the best and easiest way possible.By letting it come naturally. Each release saw the band morph into varying degrees of their growing musical psyche, refusing to allow their insatiable search for self-respect and musical growth to be harnessed in any way, shape or form.Respected by their peers and adored by an ever expanding legion of fans, Void Of Vision became an entity unto themselves with an air of invincibility around them that was inspiring and infectious. Until they almost lost vocalist Jack Bergin in early 2022 to what was later diagnosed as a "glitch" in his head. The normally outgoing and accessible frontman was forced into becoming an involuntary recluse after returning to hospital in April 2023 suffering intense headaches before being rushed into surgery for a life-saving procedure that forced him into confronting his own mortality and coming to terms with the now very real fact that tomorrow may not be as assured as he once took it for granted to be.As he has done his entire life, Bergin again turned to music, but this time it was with a different outlook on life that manifested itself through songwriting for a body of work that eventually became the genesis for Void Of Vision's new album What I'll Leave Behind that is due for release on September 20.A swirling maelstrom of massive riffs, abrasive edges and sonic bursts of intensity, What I'll Leave Behind is the product of a multitude of fear, sorrow and regret coupled with a renewed appreciation for life that could only come from the perspective of someone who has looked death in the eye but refused to accept it.HEAVY recently sat down with Bergin to discuss a tumultuous past few years and the music that recounts it."I had my first nocturnal seizure," he explained when we ask him about the initial circumstances that saw him wake up in the back of an ambulance, terrified and unsure of how he had got there. "It's basically an unavoidable moment where you are asleep in the dead of the night and your brain will just - basically due to my AVM which is constricting my blood flow - and leads to a… I can't remember the actual name of the type of seizure, but it led to me waking up in the back of an ambulance. I was very lucky to have my partner at the time there, and she was calling the ambulance before we knew it. But it was very weird because for the first time in my life that was a moment that I have zero recollection of. You can have your moments when you are on a night out, and you get drunk, but this was just completely different. It's complete blackout, with no clue of what happened or how it happened. I just went to sleep and woke up in an ambulance, and that was a really wild experience. It's the first instance of what happened. I went to the doctors, and they started beginning the plan to get rid of this AVM in the back of my brain and begin the process for radiotherapy."In the full interview, Jack opens up about the rest of the journey that nearly claimed his life, confronting the illness, how he harnessed those fears into the process of turning it into music for the new album, removing himself from the public eye in order to recover and hating every minute of it, creating an anterior persona dubbed the Angel Of Darkness to mentally adjust to the changes, how the ongoing support from his bandmates and fans in general helped him regain focus, the continued musical growth of Void Of Vision, their upcoming run of shows with Parkway Drive and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsSydney trio Yours Truly stamped themselves on the Australian music landscape with their impressive 2020 album Self Care, which was nominated for an ARIA for Best Hard Rock or Heavy album.Rather than rest on their laurels, the band attacked their craft with even more intent, spending 2023 touring Europe alongside You Me At Six, ticking off their first-ever UK headline shows, supporting Against The Current in North America and touring Australia nationally with Neck Deep.Yours Truly kicked off 2024 with an appearance at THPS25 in Brisbane, celebrating 25 years of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater with Tony Hawk himself in attendance, as well as embarking on their entirely sold-out Call My Name Tour across Australia in March. The band will also return overseas later this year, appearing at Reading and Leeds Festival in the UK this August alongside headliners Blink-182, Fred Again, Lana Del Rey, Liam Gallagher and many more.It is a fitting reward for a band who have championed the cause of Australian music at every opportunity, with their new album, TOXIC (out August 16), set to propel the band and their music to even greater heights.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Mikaila Delgado and guitarist Teddie Winder-Haron to venture inside the new album and the band's future plans."Nervous, and excited," Teddie smiled when asked how they were feeling about the impending release of Toxic. "Mostly excited. We've been hanging out a bunch prepping for all the shows we've got coming up and practicing a lot, so I think just being around each other is hyping each other up. Still a little bit nervous, but I guess that's part of it."HEAVY asks about the selection process for album singles."Call My Name we chose just because we loved it, so much," Mikaila began. "It was actually finished before we tracked the album. It was the first song we tracked for the record and everyone was like wait and see what other songs we get from the album when it is finished - because a song can change - and we got to a point where we thought this song is still gonna be good, let's just put it out. I think Sour was the same. When we wrote it, we were like, this is gonna be a single. I guess it's just having that gut feeling."Watch/listen to the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersNew Zealand-hailing, Melbourne-based heavy outfit Banks Arcade have always been a band who colour just outside the lines of acceptance, believing their fresh and unique outlook on the accepted parameters of music was worthy of stepping into the light of its own volition.Over a series of EP's - starting with 2018s Endnote - Banks Arcade consistently refuse to tiptoe around the broad scope of musical potential, instead preferring to brush stroke their intentions with haphazard outbursts of musical spontaneity that could quite possibly have isolated them from the increasing pack of promising outfits, but have instead earnt them a reputation as a band who aren't here to push the boundaries. They are here to smash them. Not content with the release of the Death 2 EP back in February, which preceded a national tour in May, Banks Arcade recently unleashed EP number two for the year in the shape of A Muse which finds the band shedding the expected and instead flourishing between moments of searing rock, towering hooks, dance beats and fresh explorations into heavy surrounds.HEAVY caught up with frontman Joshua O'Donnell not long before the EP dropped on June 28 to find out more. We start by asking if it is hard to maintain excitement levels for new releases with so much happening to the band."I think the excitement for me… the most excited is right when I am at the start of writing a song, and it's all happening" he measured. "When I write a song that I love I will pretty much be listening to that song every day and by the time it goes through all the process and all the finicky details you kind of get over it a little bit. But, yeah. I am more so of the mindset that you just have to keep on going and be as present and put out as much content as possible, even if you've fallen out of love with it. It's always up and down for me. Sometimes I am, sometimes I'm just, like, let's get on with it (laughs)."In the full interview Josh explains the genesis of A Muse and how it connects with Death 2, the darker nature of the music on the EP and where it came from, the story behind each of the six tracks one by one, how Banks Arcade's music has grown over their career, their hectic touring schedule and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Rashid AlkamraihkiMelbourne based music machine Banks Arcade are in the prime of their musical career.Having recently completed the Death 2 A Muse Tour, Banks Arcade now set their sights on the release of new album A Muse, which will be unleashed on June 28.Formed over a shared love of music with a razor-sharp avant-garde aesthetic, Banks Arcade have always teetered on modernity; a fact displayed firmly on their 2018 debut EP Endnote, its 2020 follow-up Fever Dreams, and the group's head-turning singles Roses and Drown, both of which have gone on to amass well over 2 million individual streams.Releasing their full-length Future Lovers in 2022, Banks Arcade cemented their future-facing trademark style while also turning heads courtesy of their emphatic soundscapes, searing metal and hip-hop additions.Evolving from the darker sides explored on their recent DEATH 2 EP, released in February, A Muse finds the New Zealand-hailing, Melbourne-based quartet shedding the expected and instead flourishing between moments of searing rock, towering hooks, dance beats and fresh explorations into heavy surrounds.HEAVY interrogator Rashid caught up with the band the afternoon of their final Brisbane show to talk more about the album, the tour, the different stylistic choices between both EPs (Death 2 and A Muse) and releasing them as two separate works rather than an album, hotel stabbings and the price of cheese in New Zealand plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Vatican over Zoom video.Savannah, Georgia five-piece VATICAN has released their new album ULTRA, via UNFD. Vatican are influenced by the "fuck you" frankness of heavy hardcore, but with the technical leads of djent and progressive metal. Cynical of technology, but enamored with video games. The band quickly began shaping their sound from nascent metalcore into something more complex and interesting. By the time Vatican released their first full-length, Sole Impulse, in 2019, they had developed past their exploratory beginnings and were making a fairly serious mark in the scene with a polished, well-performed strain of challenging and confrontational metalcore. But an even more invigorating chapter began when vocalist Mike Sugars entered the fold in October 2020, replacing the band's former frontman, John Whittle. Sugars had been fronting Indianapolis' Church Tongue, friends of Vatican who just so happened to be slowing down as a band when Sugars was contacted by Soto-Ramos. The mutual admiration of each other's dopeness led to an instant connection, with Sugars making his recorded debut on last year's Become a New God double single. He quickly infused the band with new energy, as well as an immediately focused lyrical theme of regaining self-control and owning one's problems in such a way that, well, one becomes their own god. Fast-forward to 2022. With their latest full-length, Ultra, the band have metabolized all their ambitiously varied musical influences and merged them into a forward-thinking approach that pulls in their love of video games and subtle humor, resulting in an impossibly tasteful and wildly varied, post-modern metalcore affair. As they did on other recent efforts, the band still harken to the complexity of Meshuggah's polyrhythms and the Dillinger Escape Plan's technical abrasion, as well as Hatebreed and Turmoil's more straightforward, metallic hardcore foundation – but there's also guitarist Tom Lovejoy's electronics and Sugars' clean singing. Ultra is infused with the band's overall personality, and what results is a subtle aura of dark satire that's more refined than it sounds on paper. " Above it all, Sugars bellows, barks, and sometimes sings a wide range of topics spanning more emotions than just anger. To be sure, he rages against inhumane billionaires and the ills of nü-internet; grapples with mixed feelings towards his father; and much more. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing LIMBS over Zoom video.U.S. post-hardcore rising stars LIMBS have released their lyrically intimate and sonically pummeling new EP Coma Year on UNFD. The band has shared the video for "Blood and Heel.".The video is full of fire, pit-stirring breakdowns, riffy, post-hardcore urgency, and supremely catchy choruses that invite finger-pointing and singing along. The subject matter is something the entire world can relate to. It encapsulates the emotions that rose to the surface due to the restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the lockdowns forced people to take long, hard looks at themselves."This song is my quarantine anthem," exclaims singer Austin McAuley. "Simply put, it's a vivid recollection of the mental and physical toll the pandemic has taken on myself and those around me. The song describes the often unhealthy coping mechanisms I employed to deal with the stress and uncertainty I faced in my personal life, as well as my role as an artist while the world was in a volatile state.”He finishes, "At the end of it all, I felt like the only person who could help me was myself. I didn't want to rely on anyone else to solve any issues I may have due to the stresses of being in unprecedented times from a pandemic."McAuley is proud of Coma Year as a whole, calling the EP "our most heartfelt and honest release to date." It's certainly an EP for the people and meant to forge a supportive, therapeutic connection with the listener. He continues, "Every track paints a picture of my greatest fears coming to fruition from an anxiety filled perspective. Creating these songs was extremely cathartic, serving as a form of therapy to me while I navigated through dark days. Themes of loss, grief, uncertainty, and instability flow through this release but therein also lies a sense of optimism; hinting at the healing process initiated by bringing all of my greatest fears to the forefront."LIMBS, who have enjoyed editorial praise and support from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, Revolver, Wall of Sound, Metal Injection, and more on previous releases, including the 2020 EP Only The Lonely Know, which now boasts over 2 million streams. We want to hear from you! When it comes to themes, messages, songwriting, and cinema-inspired music videos – Jacob Charlton is your guy. The frontman of Australia-based band Thornhill is all-in as he talks to IUF about the millions of ideas manifesting in his head that have been translated into the music. Deriving influences from other notable worldwide front leads such as Elvis, Justin Timberlake, and Gwen Stefani – Jacob has all the tools of the trade from a wide range of genres. Now combining it with the sound of metalcore, it goes to show that no one is doing it the way Thornhill is doing it. Jacob talks about the production processes that went behind the newest album “Heroine.” Within the band's sound, Thornhill will remind fans of Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, and Red Hot Chili Peppers – only to show there is no limit to their reach of genre bending. It's one thing to sing a song, it's another to perform alongside the singing, and Jacob is dedicated to this art form. Many Australian acts have made names for themselves within the heavy metal realm such as Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, and Architects, now it's time to open the gates for Thornhill, so be sure to catch them in a live setting coming soon to a stage near you. Australian alternative bright lights Yours Truly have announced their brand new EP is this what i look like? which will be coming out July 15th, 2022 via UNFD. The band have also released a new song and video “Hallucinate” which features Josh Franceschi of You Me At Six. This will be the first full release from the band since their huge debut Self Care back in 2020, and also features a guest spot from DR€W ¥ORK from Stray From the Path. Speaking about the new single Mikaila Delgado explains “'Hallucinate' is an anxiety attack turned into music, detailing how it takes over your body so totally that it feels as if you're under the influence of something. I've struggled badly with anxiety and it's debilitating every day to be at war with your own thoughts. It's one of the darkest songs we've ever written but I found a lot of power in pulling out the chaos of how anxiety feels and sounds to me and putting it in a song.” Watch the video for “Hallucinate” here. This brilliant new EP marks the start of a new chapter for Yours Truly, inspired by the music they are all collectively listening to now (Bring Me The Horizon, The 1975, Bloc Party, Head Automatica), the seven tracks see the band scatter in every direction possible. There's the electro-thrash of “Lights On”, the aching alt-rock swagger of recent single “Walk Over My Grave” and the fearless pop stomp of “If You're Drowning (I'll Learn How To Hold My Breath)”. Though actually, this new EP was never meant to be a bold step forward for the group, and was originally planned as a three-track companion to their debut album Self-Care, called Self-Sabotage. The EP was meant to tackle something other than the “sunshine and butterflies” of their debut album, dig deeper, be more true and reflective of the band now. “We spent that whole album telling people everything was going to be alright but the world had clearly taken a turn. Over the past few years, self care has been incredibly difficult,” explains Delgado. “We wanted to explore 'that'.” is this what i look like? stays true to that goal, but once they got into the studio with their “anything goes” attitude, they realized these songs “felt like a different universe entirely.” Rather than running scared or trying to dial it back, the band decided to jump in, accept these new challenges and make themselves at home. It's a bold move for a band who, in it for the long haul, wanted to just gradually push things forward on every record. However two years without touring and without being able to get in the practice space together has changed that patient mindset. “Now we just want to write the songs we want to write. Let's not be afraid. Let's just be the best band we possibly can.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support

We had the pleasure of interviewing ERRA over Zoom video! Prolific metalcore progressives ERRA have dropped the deluxe version of their latest album S/T, viia UNFD. The expanded edition of S/T is beefed up with seven additional tracks, including a feature from Spiritbox's Courtney LaPlante, along with three covers. The material on the deluxe has been praised by Loudwire, Rock Sound, Knotfest, Riff, and more. With touring off the table for most of 2021, the band found other means of creative outlet, and opted to re-enter the studio with producers Carson and Grant around the time of the release of what would go on to become their career-defining self titled album. On that album, the band confronted depression, anxiety, and desperation throughout. They took listeners on a near-out-of-body journey to Aokigahara, the infamous Suicide Forest of Japan; into episodic storytelling that would make Black Mirror writers proud; and into the literary works of Cormac McCarthy and Hubert Selby Jr. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, it served as a definitive mission statement for the band, the members of which are already well-respected players revered for their inspiring technicality and raw, natural talent. The deluxe edition builds upon that foundation. ERRA have also released a new mini-documentary. The footage was filmed in January 2021 when the band was recording the new songs and offers a deeper insight into their process and the artistic choices they made regarding the additional material and cover songs on the deluxe edition. LIMBS found a home with UNFD in 2018, ahead of the release of their debut album Father's Son, which gives listeners a dark and brooding look at a young man's journey out of religion as he comes to terms with both his upbringing and his own actions.. A conceptual album following a young man breaking free from his indoctrinated upbringing, the album explores the harm it causes and the strength in reclaiming your own life. In 2020, they now present new single ‘Empty Vessel'. “'Empty Vessel,' was inspired by my own struggles of balancing my personal life while also pursuing the perpetual dream of “success” as an artist,” shares vocalist Austin McAuley. “The song immerses the listener in themes of self-sacrifice, vulnerability and the constant desire to have one's voice heard. The chorus beckons, ‘How long is the breath that I have to hold before I'm worth my weight in gold?' This statement reflects the trials and tribulations of those who will do anything to make their dreams come true…but as the lyrics tell, “How does it feel? Only the lonely know.” JC got a chance to sit with Austin McAuley (vocal), Jordan Hunter (guitar), and Joey DiBiase (drums) about their lineup changes, how their sound has evolved, and their new EP, "Only The Lonely Know" which is out now!
