In an era dominated by playlists, TikTok, Reels and Shorts, reduced attention spans and endless content, Karnivool doubled down on the album as a complete statement - the album as the antidote. As Drew Goddard says. “In the age of content, I thought it was even more important to release an album.”For Karnivool, the album remains more than a collection of tracks. It is a long-form quest (in this case, lasting 12 years), both for the band and the listener. “I struggle with focus,” Goddard explains, “so committing to a long-form thing was important. Something that could hold people captive for a little bit. Stop them in their tracks.”At this point, it hits hard just how much work goes into the making of an album, especially one as epic as In Verses. With each passing year, Karnivool fans' patience was tested and their expectations, inevitably, notched upwards. I don't think anyone will be disappointed, but perhaps it would help for the band to crack on towards the next album…soonish. Despite the long wait, the band insists they weren't consciously responding to external pressure. “We weren't really thinking about the stakes,” Jon Stockman says. “We were so embroiled in the process itself.” After 12 years, the achievement is not just the record itself. “We're still friends,” Stockman notes. “We're still enjoying it.” In a career defined by patience and precision, simply arriving together for a new album and what many may see as a career-defining tour, may be Karnivool's greatest artistic statement yet. And that may be an understatement. The Art of Longevity is powered by Bang & Olufsen[full article on website]Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Words and Interview by Kyra JadeThis is NOT a drill. Karnivool has gifted us a new album - In Verses - after a cool 13 years carefully curating each song. Spoiler alert, it's every bit as magical as you are imaging! Just like Karnivool I'm from Perth myself and have always carried this sense of pride and connection to the band through their music. Sometimes it feels like you are isolated away from the rest of the world in W.A so to see a band from there successfully take on the rest of Australia and then the world is nothing short of amazing. Now, nothing really gets me more excited than a message from my boss Kris at HEAVY MAG that says ‘You're a big Karnivool fan, right?'. Whatever it is, yes count me in. Before I knew it, I was locked in for an interview on my lunch break from my work ute the following Monday. The makings of a true interviewer I've since been told… thus starting the first of my His-Vis interview series.Monday rolls around and it's time to dig in and see what's been going on in the Karnivool camp! What was the moment they decided it was ‘time' to put it all together and release the music that's been burning a hole in their pocket for so long? I'll take the chance to fire away all the questions that have been burning a hole in my pockets for years too! Lucky for me the man with all the answers, frontman Ian Kenny, just entered my Zoom and I couldn't be more excited to hear what he has to say.We took a walk down memory lane and reflected on releasing their 2001 debut EP Persona. Mostly I was curious to know if they would, or have, played it live cover-to-cover and Ian's reaction was pretty much 'Shut it down'
The first reaction video for 2026 with great new music from NMB, Big Big Train, Peter Gabriel, Einar Solberg, Karnivool, and Holosoil.

Formed from the ashes that has become COVID, Melbourne hard rock outfit XCALIBRE had the benefit of time on their side from the outset. Time to hone their craft. Time to practice. Time to plan. All of which proved fruitful when XCALIBRE hit the ground running, earning themselves slots alongside acts such as Van Halen, Aerosmith, Drowning Pool, Karnivool, and The Amity Affliction, among others. Their upward trajectory attracted the attention of rising Australian label XMusic, who snapped up the band and set about planning their next step, which begins this Friday, September 5, with the release of their single Gravity (Through It All). Not content to open their account with what is already a great track, XCALIBRE enlisted the help of two massive music identities in DJ Lethal (Limp Bizkit) and Marcos Curiel (P.O.D.) as guest artists, tracking the song in the home of Guns N Roses drummer Matt Sorum. While not a guaranteed recipe for success, pulling off that trifecta is an achievement in itself, especially for an up-and-coming band from Melbourne.HEAVY sat down with lead vocalist Daniel Marazita to find out more. We start by gauging his enthusiasm surrounding the impending release of Gravity."Yeah, we're just looking forward to getting it out," he smiled. "We did a lot of hard work on these tracks, so to have this one off the rank first… It's pretty exciting."We ask Daniel to tell us more about Gravity from a musical point of view."It's got a mixture of sounds with this one," he measured. "Brandon Friesen mixed it so we've got that electronic in the background, that real sort of - I hate to stereotype songs - but Linkin Park sounding with the rap and the big melodies. We've got that aggression, but we still keep a sound within it, which is really important."In the full interview, Daniel also discussed the music video, which features creative visuals, the collaboration with DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit and Marcos Curiel from P.O.D., including how their contributions enriched the song through electronic programming and distinctive guitar sounds. He emphasized the collaborative spirit during the creation of their upcoming debut album X, noting that Gravity represents just a fraction of the album's diversity, which will include a mix of heavy, soft, and crossover tracks. Plans for live performances were spoken about, along with upcoming plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

It's a new year but there's no time for hugs and handshakes. Let's get back to business. Why don't Gav and James throw bands who are having a tough time on tour a few extra quid? Is Spotify really the devil of the music industry? And how the hell did Karnivool end up on Brutal Assault if they were booked as a Euro exclusive for ATG?After those pleasantries are exchanged there's the small matter of tackling 2025; the live tour, Trees, ATG and Damnation's 20th birthday bash.James also gets excited about new albums this year promises while Gav sets a new high standard for On The Record. Enjoy, engage and let's go again! We go again, every Thursday morning.
The first wave of bands have been announced for 2025, and it's a tsunami worth diving into.Karnivool, Melvins, Rolo Tomassi, Kylesa, Between the Buried and Me playing Colors, The Fall of Troy playing Doppelgänger and not just one, but two We Lost The Sea sets, including "the greatest post rock album ever"... Departure Songs.Plenty to get swept away by but first, what's the issue with international bank transfers, music award bashes and agents selling you a dummy! Curly fucking Wurly, indeed. We go again, every Thursday morning.
Welcome to another episode of The Story of Rock and Roll Show. S7E29 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 Jul 2024. You can follow us on Facebook, X, or Instagram, just search for The Story of Rock and Roll on those sites. The episode is choc-a-bloc with Rock and Metal, and we had a great time. Please also note that the artists featured are in order of play. Also, note that at about an hour and 20 minutes into the show, somewhere between Joe Bonamassa and Iron Maiden, there was a technical hitch on the mic, and it goes quiet for about 15 seconds. Hang in there it all comes right. I had a great interview with the guys from Jasper Dan, we got a scoop on their brand new track "Mama Voodoo" which was released the following morning. This week on the Twisted Twins we had two tracks called “Speed of Light'. The first from Iron Maiden and the second from The Cult off their Beyond Good and Evil Album. Immortals this week came from Guns ‘n' Roses with “Breakdown”, a most amazing track off Use Your Illusion II. Axl Rose, at this stage of his career, was probably the biggest rock star in the world. One thing that he doesn't get enough recognition for in my view is his incredibly good lyrics. This track is a great example. The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘E'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. This week we had: Eagles – One of These NightsEurope – The Final CountdownEminem – The Eminem ShowExodus – Person Non Grata Bomb Crocodile and Slow Panda's picks of the week were Machine Head – “Bastards” and Karnivool – Eidolon Artists Featured: Korn, Great White, Rainbow, ACDC, Metallica, Foghat, Cold Chisel, The Black Cat Bones, Asylum Kids, Megadeth, Jelusik, Dire Straits, Rammstein, Iron Maiden, The Cult, Joe Bonamassa, Laura Cox, Iron Maiden, Accept, Jasper Dan, Danko Jones, Rachet Dolls, Guns ‘n' Roses, Eagles, Europe, Eminem, Exodus, Bush, Machine Head, Karnivool, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, Judas PriestThe Story of Rock and Roll. A The Curious Kind 2020. év végén kezdett el testet ölteni, akkor még név nélkül. Kőrös “Köge” Gergely basszusgitáros (Autopilot) és Fekete Andi dobos (ex-Hellburnt, ex-Autopilot) Sebők Péter (ex-Fuge) gitárossal kiegészülve kezdte el a közös gondolkodást egy új projektről. Végül Nagy Dániel ritmusgitáros (Berber, ex-Red Swamp), Kovács “Greg” Gergely énekes (Red Swamp) és Glowacz Dorina billentyűs-vokalista érkezésével lett teljes a zenekar. A tagok progresszív rock iránti szeretete volt a közös nevező; olyan bandák ihlették például őket, mint a Tool, a Muse, a Faith No More, a Karnivool vagy a The Perfect Circle. A február 1-én megjelent és minden fontosabb streamingfelületen elérhető, 4 számos bemutatkozó kislemezük, a Here in the Deadlights első klipje jelent most meg a Find Finality című dalhoz. For more than 20 years, Pendulum have been at the top of the D&B game. Hailing from Perth but breaking through to the London scene, their massive sound has seen them play big stages, drop huge hits, and blend their love of heavy guitar and electronic music in all they do. But their musical palette is broad, which you'll discover when founding member Rob Swire Takes 5 with the whole shebang. From Spiderbait to Empire of the Sun to Karnivool, this is a capture of the many sides of one of Australian music's biggest exports. Interview by Kris PetersAussie prog rock legends COG don't just spend their time promoting their own music, they also give back to the Australian music scene by regularly taking local bands with them on the road, and now helping run their own music festival to help highlight some of this countries hardest working and quickest rising outfits. The Other Festival is set down for January 28 at The Tivoli in Brisbane, with COG being joined by Osaka Punch, The Stranger, Bare Bones, The Wrath, Rhino, Mass Sky Raid, Minds End and more in a one day extravaganza that made its debut in 2021.COG drummer Lucius Borich joined HEAVY earlier this week to chat about The Other Festival and... whatever else he felt like really."We're very pumped," he enthused. "Getting the fuel in the tank, getting the cogs all greased up, getting rid of the cogwebs..."COG have never been a band to over-saturate the market with singles and/or live shows, and as such don't necessarily get the chance to be match fit so to speak when it comes to performing."We just did that bunch of five shows with Karnivool on the Monolith Festival," he said, "and went to all of the different states of Australia and we hadn't played - because of COVID and all that stuff - we hadn't played for almost two years. That was a real adjustment. All of a sudden BOOM, you're up in front of 3000, 4000 people, whatever it was, and it was somewhat intimidating. I think we did well, but to try and get in that frame of mind and that environment and feel comfortable after two years of not playing was definitely a challenge, that's for sure. I think we pulled it off and we've got a bit of that still remaining in the tank from doing those shows which was only about four months ago. It definitely requires you to be playing quite a lot to feel confident and comfortable but we just don't seem to have that luxury to some degree. Just given the circumstances of everyone's lives and where we're at in our career but we try to rehearse and get things dialled in and then just get up there and do what we need to do. But to be a well fitted out, oiled up outfit you do need to have regular gigs and it does make it harder when you don't, so it's challenging - which is good in some respects. You could say it adds a lot more dynamic to the performance because you're not playing all the time or jaded. So there's a little bit of that double edged sword there. It's kind of one of those situations."In the full interview, Lucius talks more about The Other Festival and what to expect, the other bands on the line-up, what sort of criteria is used to select bands on a festival bill, moving from Fortitude Music Hall to The Tivoli, current writing progress and more.
Greg brings three metal adjacent bands to the show this week, more of a heavy flirtation than a heavy rotation. English rock band Porcupine Tree, led by the prolific Steven Wilson, formed in 1987. The progressive rock band Karnivool is our latest Aussie band to add to the show, hailing from Perth since 1997. Finally we listen to the prog metal band Opeth, which formed in Stockholm in 1990. Combined Greg's got 95 years of international prog rock experience coming at you this week and it is delightful!Songs:Karnivool - “Set Fire to the Hive”Porcupine Tree - “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here”Opeth - “Deliverance”Jay's had mixed emotions with Ryan Adams recent output. Two new cover albums at the tail end of 2022 seemed like great news! Fear set in when he discovered that the albums were Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska & Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, which was quelled when he learned they would free! Then he listened to them…Song: Stuff - “Foots (Live Montreux '76)"Nick brings us some legal news as UMG found itself on either side of two lawsuits this week. Black Sheep is suing UMG, partly due to a claim that they accepted lower streaming revenue in exchange for ownership stake in Spotify. UMG denies the claim and, meanwhile filed a suit against the video-sharing social network Triller for $750 million for unpaid license fees. UMG has no ownership stake in Triller, but Nick's not implying anything by that, right?Song: Keith Jarrett - “Part V (Live in Stockholm 1972)”

Capturing a seasoned elegance and ferocity well beyond their years, Sydney's Reliqa are entirely in a league of their own via their blazing mix of prog, metal and genre-defiant creations. Already a burgeoning fixture in the Australian progressive metal scene, Reliqa have spent much of 2022 wowing crowds on stages, appearing at all national dates for https://www.destroyalllines.com/festival-faq/ (Monolith Festival) as well as supports for Caligula's Horse and Thy Art Is Murder earlier this year, as well as unveiling new music in the form of their blazing single Safety, featuring Sean Harmanis from Make Them Suffer. But while their ongoing successes have seen their star quality exponentially rise, it's this month that the group arrive at yet another triumph: a third EP, I Don't Know What I Am, ready to dazzle with its measured mayhem and sharpened dexterity. With the new EP dropping the same day as the group's final appearance at Monolith Festival in Perth alongside the likes of Karnivool, Cog, Plini, Ocean Grove and more, there's still plenty of Reliqa magic still to come in the not-too-distant future. But before the next incredible Reliqa chapter truly ignites, Reliqa vocalist, and all-round powerhouse, Monique Pym joins host Tiana Speter on the latest epsiode of https://www.thesoundcheck.org/the-soundcheck-podcast (Behind The Soundcheck) to chat new music, vulnerability and some extremely quick onstage problem solving. Read on and listen below. In this episode we discuss: The reality of hard work for any working band or artist, and the struggle of downtime. Reliqa's active patience involved in building towards the upcoming release of I Don't Know What I Am. The goal behind the band's lead single Safety featuring Sean Harmanis from Make Them Suffer. The trademark arsenal of skills, tools and sounds of Reliqa, and how and why they chose to branch out in their new EP. Embracing their genre-defying sound and carrying that notion into I Don't Know What I Am. Writing from a more personal perspective for the new EP and Mon's comfort zone background as a constant writer. Finding meaning in music, accessible music and respecting the platform of vulnerable communication and varied listening styles. Sydney alternative outfit Reliqa have had a bumper year already. As well as a recent appearance on the national run of Monolith shows alongside COG and Karnivool, the band are also preparing to launch their new EP I Don't Know What I Am on September 16, with anticipation already growing following their knockout live performances. The title of the EP says it all.I Don't Know Who I Am is a collection of six tracks that explores that notion and how you deal with the isolation and loneliness that comes with it.This will be Reliqa's third EP in their brief existence and looks set to further enhance their growing reputation, with vocalist Monique Pym joining HEAVY earlier today to chat about the release."Basically, it's all the name. As long as we've been a band we've been getting this feedback that keeps coming back to what are you guys? A lot of it is trying to shoehorn us into a genre but it's not really working. We fit both everywhere and nowhere at the same time, I find. At least for other people's perspective that's what people are saying. Are we prog? Are we metal? Are we metalcore? Are we this, that or the other? We're not quite sure. All we know is we're really making music that feels good to us. It's basically drawn from a lot of different, far reaching inspirations and musically it comes together into this amalgamation of a whole bunch of different sounds we wanted to explore, except in saying that we wanted to keep it accessible in the sense that it wasn't just this absolute mess of sounds. It was also cohesive and listenable. So we've really taken those inspirations and we've worked together with our producer Chris Blancato and all of us together have refined our sound into compressing all these far reaching ideas into radio length tracks of three to four minutes. It was a real challenge to get there, and I'm really interested to hear what peoples thoughts are, because we're still discovering what it means and what it is and who we are as musicians and I think when I say that it's all in the name it is in a sense of we are really wearing our hearts on our sleeve's here. We're finding an identity and really carving out a sound that is totally signature to us and that's our goal here and I think we have achieved it pretty well. I'm really interested to hear what other people will have to say about it."In the full interview Monique runs more through the musical aspect of the EP, how it differs from the last EP Eventide, runs us through each track individually and the meanings behind them, the recent Monolith shows, the band's own shows coming up and more.Intro track PISTONFIST 'On The Run'

After several delayed attempts to get off the ground, Monolith Festival is set to make its debut at Brisbane's Eatons Hill Hotel on August 13.Featuring two of Australia's heavyweight progressive rock outfits in Karnivool and COG – who have not toured together for 17 years – Monolith is a celebration of not just music in this country, but also the broad spread of bands within the rock genre.Joining Karnivool and COG will be Ocean Grove, Plini, sleepmakeswaves, Reliqa and Yomi Ship for a travelling festival that stops at Melbourne, Sydney and Perth across one month of Saturdays to maximise reach. After an enforced prolonged absence due to world conditions, COG are preparing to reignite their assault on the hearts and ears of their loyal fans, with drummer Lucius Borich sitting down for a chat with HEAVY about the run of shows. We start by asking, after the postponements of recent times, when it will actually feel real that the band will be once more stepping on stage."It's always a matter of when that foot hits the stage, and the foots on the bass drum pedal and then you know that it's actually happening,” he smiled. “That's the way I approach it, try not to get too excited - considering what's gone on the last two and a half years with stop/starts and disappointments and whatever else - it's kind of like you learn to sit in that holding pattern of when it happens it happens. Like I said, if my foots on the bass drum pedal, I'll have a smile on my face."One distinguishing feature of Monolith is the decision to operate from just one stage with all seven bands, avoiding the potential pitfalls associated with band clashes."It's a good idea to have it like that,” Borich nodded. “All the bands have a shorter set as well, same with Cog. You get to see that amount of bands in a short stint of time. If we were all doing our longer sets it would probably be too much, but to have shorter sets you can pack it all in, and there's variety and all the rest of it from all the different bands I think that's a great idea. People can be more concentrated on being more attentive to the bands and the music that are playing."In the full interview, Lucius talks more about Monolith, performing with Karnivool again, the importance of having emerging bands play with more established artists, providing guidance for younger bands, new music from COG and more.

Every so often a band comes along that almost seems too cool for school.Bands with a laid back, almost flippant attitude and enough nonchalance to almost make them sound French.Of course, most bands that come across like that generally get caught up in their own self importance and soon fall by the wayside but every so often you come across an outfit that really is just one of the cool kids, but maybe lost in the wrong postcode.Emerging Gold Coast prog – core (for want of a better analogy) IBVS are that band for this generation.Fuck, they are too cool even to bother with vowels in their name. But don't let that fool you, because these three musical enigmas most certainly can count and spell and stuff. So much so that hearing them play their instruments is similar to learning your twelve times tables in pre-school – highly rewarding but hard as fuck!Blending almost every form of music you can think of (all the cool ones anyway), IBVS have arrived without telling anyone they were even coming. And the local music scene is all the better off for it.Drawing inspiration from bands such as Between The Buried and Me, Arcane Roots, A PerfectCircle, A Wilhelm Scream, Cog, Karnivool, Periphery and All That Remains, IBVS set themselvesthe ethos of creating art that pushes the boundaries of their song writing and playing abilities, whilst still remaining accessible to the listener, but most importantly, to have fun. And at the verycore it, this is what IBVS truly is about, mates having fun with music.Fresh from releasing their debut single Follow The Gaijin, and the promise of more to come with an as yet unreleased debut EP, IBVS are a name sure to remain on your lips long after your initial introduction, with the band sitting down for a chat with HEAVY's Jimmy Glinster to allow us greater insight into the where's, why's and how's.

I caught up with Hoss from Karnivool about their new album, moshpit fails, his love for acoustic guitar and how Hoss sees it as more than music.
After a prolonged period of silence – eight years to be precise – Perth rock outfit Karnivool finally released new material last week, albeit with little fuss or fanfare.Karnivool are a band who have always done things their way and shunned normal convention, but the surprise release of “All It Takes” was both welcome and appreciated for the bands legion of fans who have been waiting since 2013 for new material. Not only has Karnivool released an early Christmas present in the form of a new song, they have also recently released Decade Of Sound Awake on Blu-Ray, which is a recording of their LiveStream celebration of their breakthrough album recorded earlier this year.On top of that Karnivool were also recently announced as co-headliners of next years Monolith Festival with COG, so all in all HEAVY felt it was long overdue to chat with the band about all of these new developments.Vocalist Ian Kenny joined us earlier this week.We start by asking him how the early reaction has been for “All It Takes”, despite the fact not many people knew it was actually coming out."It's been great,” he laughed. “It's been really, really cool. It's one of things where you don't... we just didn't wanna think about it too much because we've basically been sitting on that song for the last year and a half. We had all these intentions to take it out on tour and align it with a whole bunch of live shows over the last two or three years, but they just kept falling over. We tried several attempts to get tours happening, but it just didn't happen, so it was just bubbling away too much. We had to drop it and thought we'd drop it out of nowhere and create a bit of a splash. I think outside that too, more about how things have been, we're also very aware of where we are right now people just need something and if you've got something to share or something to offer through a time when it's all a bit sticky then why not. And what we can do, and control, is our music at the moment so why not put it out."Musically, “All It Takes” is vintage Karnivool, with relevant subject matter interlaced with the unmistakable sounds of a band truly atop their game."It's pretty dark,” Kenny offered. “It's pretty heavy rolling piece of music. On repeat listen you'll pick up some of the layers in it. It's a pretty rolling kind of stomp of a song. It's got this dirty synth and the whole of the take is basically a snapshot of where we've been at as a band creatively and trying to find our way through our own creative processes, which aren't always the easiest things. I think it's become this mantra for us lately as we've sat on this piece of music. You basically find a way through it really. There's a lot of questions in the song which kind of spread a bit wider to what we're all dealing with. Internally, really, it's about our own process of what we're trying to do and still trying to do."In the full interview, Ian runs through “All It Takes” in greater detail, the possibility of more new music, the songs path to release, the Blu-Ray release, celebrating ten years of Sound Awake, why he feels it was such an important album to the band and their fans, next years Monolith Festival, touring overseas and more.

After individually relocating 300 miles to further develop their craft, the Geordie quartet was coincidentally born in the South, bound together by their northern heritage and a shared love for bands such as Karnivool, Soundgarden, Radiohead and Deftones. Written during the 2020 lockdown, their upcoming releases feature themes of self isolation and a dystopian reality. Their music captures the many lows of loneliness and tips a hat to the music that gets you through hard times; sweeping you up in a conceptual journey, from giant riffs to melancholic melodies, and ambient soundscapes. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Chris Coulter (Arcane Roots, Jamie Lenman) at the Ranch and Stakeout Studios, Giant Walker have stitched together a sound, woven from the fabric of their influences, that can't be found elsewhere. anniversary of their Sound Awake album masterpiece. In coming to grips with the realization things currently are out of the band's control, Karnivool have elected to celebrate the milestone with a one-off Livestream event from the Heath Ledger Centre in Perth on May 12.Guitarist Hoss caught up with HEAVY to discuss the show and his memories from that great album, starting with how deeply the music on Sound Awake still resonates with the band some ten years later."As a band, we tend to overwrite,” he measured, “so most of the stuff on Sound Awake there's probably 15 different versions that never got released. I know for a fact I've got a hard drive here in the studio full of stuff that never got released that we could probably put another three or four albums together off. It's just the way the band does it and has always has. We can't leave rocks unturned so I... we've even spoken about it; think about the day we start releasing the album of B sides, kind of like Radiohead, and I think there would be a lot of good stuff there from the Sound Awake period and even before that with Themata. You're always thinking about those things and those things are always coming through your mind and going out the door at the same time but also at the same time, it feels so quick. It seems to flash by so quickly, even the whole writing process of an album seems to flash by so quickly. You're playing a song and you spend a lot of time on it but once it's done you move on to the next one or whatever is happening next so you don't give yourself a lot of time to reflect - which we probably should I guess at some point in time. There is also something nice about that set and forget, do and let go kind of vibe that allows you a bit of a chance to move on and hopefully get better or do something different in the future."In the full interview, Hoss talks about the live stream and how they plan to tackle it, memories from the recording of Sound Awake, the lasting legacy of the albums music, new songs and the possibility of a new album and more.Tickets are available now at karnivool.com
