A quick scan of a pre-race warmup area and you'll see a rainbow array of brightly coloured drink mixes filling the bottles, beakers, and hydration packs of endurance athletes. For many, these beverages are the bridge between the hydration needs of “normal” people and the performance necessities of athletes, with brands touting optimized mineral blends and special formulas aimed at keeping athletes running harder for longer. But how much are these drinks really doing for performance and how much is clever marketing aimed at capitalizing on the most basic of human needs: thirst? With the hottest months upon us and the racing season in full swing, we welcome back Registered Dietitian Sandra Frail to dive into the salty waters of endurance hydration. We're taking a look at what our bodies really need to perform at their best, debunking some of the common misconceptions around electrolytes, sweat, and dehydration, and understanding the real-world strategies athletes can use to optimize their hydration and avoid pouring away extra money on pricey pee. Ahead of the busy spring travel period, it's quickly become more expensive and inconvenient to fly. With war dragging on in the Middle East, rising fuel prices are increasing costs for airlines and forcing some to steer clear of the region. Meanwhile, a partial government shutdown in the U.S. is causing long lines at busy air-travel hubs as TSA employees quit or call in sick. Host Luke Vargas speaks to aviation reporter Benjamin Katz and airlines reporter Alison Sider to consider whether there's an end to the disruption in sight. The investment giant Vanguard is retreating from its climate initiatives as part of a $30 million settlement deal for an anti-trust lawsuit brought by Republican state attorneys general. The lawsuit alleged that Vanguard and fellow asset managers BlackRock and State Street, which are still fighting the suit, conspired to kill the coal industry. Vanguard did not admit to wrongdoing but is now barred from participating in climate investment watchdog groups such as Ceres. Grocery prices are up, budgets are tight, and consumers are more health-conscious than ever. So where does that leave us when it comes to organic produce, pesticide residues, and the popular “Dirty Dozen” list from the Environmental Working Group? In this episode of Nutrition for Noobs, Michelle and Kevin dig into the pros, cons, and context behind the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists. Are strawberries really a toxic nightmare? Should you only buy organic? And what's the real risk when it comes to pesticide residues in Canada and the U.S.?Michelle breaks down:What the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 actually measureWhy affordability is shaping 2026 food trendsWhat critics (and universities like McGill University) say about how the data is interpretedHow much produce you'd actually have to eat to be at risk (spoiler: it's a LOT)Practical, evidence-based ways to wash produce properlyWhether frozen fruit might be just as good, or better, than freshWhy avoiding fruits and vegetables out of fear may be the bigger health riskThe big takeaway? Don't let perfectionism (or scary headlines) stop you from eating your greens. Buy the best quality you can afford, wash your produce, consider growing your own if you can, and above all, practice food joy.Because at the end of the day, eating real food consistently matters more than obsessing over trace residues.EWG links:https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.phphttps://www.ewg.org/foodnews/clean-fifteen.phpTower garden:https://ca.towergarden.com/#michelleplantsPlease subscribe and drop us a review—your feedback helps fellow noobs find their way to better nutrition.Have a question for Michelle? This episode is about my trip to Perth last year. With the weak yen continuing, traveling overseas has become expensive for Japanese people — everything feels pricey these days. We'd mostly been traveling around Southeast Asia, but this time I visited Australia, where the cost of living is much higher. In the episode, I talk about how expensive Perth actually felt and what my food lifestyle was like there.Of course, these are just my personal impressions. From your perspective, how does Japan's cost of living look to you?I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And if you have any encouraging messages for Tora, who has just started his life in Melbourne, we'd be happy to receive those too
