Interview by Kris PetersSydney metal outfit Inertia announced themselves on the scene last year with the release of their debut album, Second Shadow.Blending the boundaries of the genre by bringing elements of dark pop and soul to the surface of a melting pot that traverses the darkest reaches of hard rock and metal, Second Shadow opened Inertia up to a generation of music lovers yearning for acceptance through music. It helped secure the quintet a host of shows, touring the nation extensively supporting Polaris, Dayseeker (US), Bury Tomorrow (US), Northlane, Holding Absence, Caskets (UK), Thy Art Is Murder, Thornhill and more. They played Good Things Festival Sydney last December, and recently travelled their way across regional Australia with In Hearts Wake.It has been true reward for effort, culminating in their own headline Australia tour, starting April 19 in Sydney and hitting Brisbane and Adelaide before finishing in Melbourne on April 27.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Mark, bass player Oliver and vocalist Julian to find out the details. We mention the compact nature of the tour, focusing on the capital cities."We just wanted to hit the capital cities, and hopefully we can get to some of the regional spots later on in the year," Mark explained. "But yeah, just for our first headliner tour for the album, we'll keep it short and sweet."Which leads to HEAVY asking how Inertia thinks the public reacted to Second Shadow."The reception's been really good," Oliver smiled. "It has exceeded expectations for us. Streams are going really well and live, people seem to receive the songs really well as well. So, yeah, it's blown expectations out of the water."In the modern age of music where streaming is king and figures are readily available, we ask how deeply a band looks into the rabbit hole and how they measure expectations when it comes to a debut album."I think it's just do better," Julian measured. "Each record needs to be bigger and better. I don't think we go into an album thinking we're going to get a specific result. We just write the best music that we can at that given time and push ourselves to be better. The result in terms of how fans latch onto the record and the streamings… everything's secondary to making good music."In the full interview, discussion centred on Inertia's upcoming headline tour. The band shared their excitement about promoting their debut album, Second Shadow, emphasizing their dedication to quality music and the evolution of their sound, which blends various influences and defies strict genre classification. The band reflected on their recent tour experiences with In Heart's Wake, Reliqa, and Ocean Sleeper, highlighting both the challenges and memorable moments, such as a humorous birthday celebration. Looking ahead, they plan to focus on writing new music and organizing future tours, encouraging fans to follow their social media for ticket updates.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Angela CroudaceIn our interview with Jake Taylor, the powerhouse vocalist of Australian metal band In Hearts Wake, we dug into the band's latest album Incarnation, their connection to tarot, and the unique creative journey behind their latest work. The concept for Incarnation is deeply rooted in the band's early fascination with tarot, something that's been in Taylor's life since childhood. “My mum was a tarot reader, so I grew up around people coming to her for readings,” Jake shared, “On this album, every song aligns with a major arcana card, but we've flipped them upside down,” he explained. This inversion of meanings reflects the darker, shadowy themes explored on the record. Incarnation delves deep into the underworld, musically and spiritually, creating a sonic experience that's intense, raw, and unrelenting.Jake also revealed that tarot is more than just a lyrical motif for the band—it's a tool for personal reflection. “We've turned to tarot during pivotal moments, like when we were figuring out the exit of a band member, just to see if things were aligned,” he said. This insight goes beyond mere fortune-telling, instead helping the band navigate life's challenging decisions.Aside from the mystical, Jake also spoke about the band's growth and experiences. Touring internationally, including a huge milestone tour with Slipknot and Lamb of God, has cemented In Hearts Wake's reputation as a force in the heavy music scene. In 2025, In Hearts Wake will bring their dark, powerful sound to Australia's Knotfest for the first time. The band is eager to take their place alongside metal heavyweights like Slipknot and Polaris. “It's a nice recognition,”Jake reflected, “Australia gets it—it gets the heavy music, the humour, and the wild places. We can't wait to share that connection on home soil.” It promises to be an unmissable moment for fans. When it comes to advice for aspiring Aussie musicians, Jake stressed the importance of staying grounded. “It's got to be about the music and the people first,” he advised. “Don't chase the numbers game. Find the roots that keep you connected to what you love.”With Incarnation now out, In Hearts Wake continues to push boundaries, blending their passion for music with a spiritual depth that's unique in the metal world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Join Jake and I as we discuss the bands latest album, Incarnation, and how interesting it was for the band to do a compendium piece to their debut album Divination. We dive a bit into the concept behind the tarot cards, and them being upside down from their counterparts. I share a story about having my cards read and how this idea of the upside down tarot cards may not be evil or bad, but a matter of a tool or skill you haven't acquired yet. Jake shares why Michigan feels like a second home for the band, working with Josh Schroeder and the unique bond they have with each other that brings out the best in each other. We also talk about getting all these Michigan artists on a track on the album and more in this chat with the In Hearts Wake frontman. This was one of the reasons I started the 5 Minute Review series - to check out metal bands I wouldn't normally listen to and get me outside of my comfort zone. In Hearts Wake certainly carry a weight to their name in the Aussie Metal scene but would their latest album be reason for me to listen to their music? Interview by Kris PetersMusical bonds forged over many years in the industry are almost an essential part of surviving and thriving in the cut-throat world of music. While friends and fans come and go, the mutual respect afforded band members and their bandmates is a constant despite the many troughs associated with the highs and lows of an industry that is fickle at best. It becomes an us against them mentality where only the strong flourish and is difficult to fully appreciate from anywhere but the inner sanctum. But it's there. And when that tether is severed for any reason, the resulting fallout can be too much for bands to bear. Which is why when long-time bass player and clean vocalist Kyle Erich announced his intention to leave In Hearts Wake earlier this year, the band were faced with a myriad of possibilities, with not all of them potentially returning a positive outcome.Rather than rush into finding a replacement, In Hearts Wake decided to push forward with plans for the next album, keeping things more in house and producing music that reflected their current position and state of mind. The result is Incarnation, which will be unleashed on an unsuspecting world on July 12. Far heavier than anything put out before by the band, Incarnation showcases are a more direct approach from the metalcore outfit, with the emphasis more on the harsher side of the light and shade spectrum than the light. But Incarnation is more than just a fresh beginning for In Hearts Wake. It also serves as the shadow counterpart to the band's debut album Divination, providing a previously unknown link between the birth of continued momentum that drives this group of now four individuals. With a September album promotional tour which features King810, Paleface Swiss and Gravemind, things are rapidly heating up for In Hearts Wake with no respite predicted for their near future. So, snatching the opportunity while we could, HEAVY sat down yesterday with frontman Jake Taylor to find out more."It's a culmination of our career since we were teenagers," he offered. "I think this is our sixth record and essentially our first as a four-piece, and it acts as a sequel to Divination, which came out twelve years earlier. It tells the other half of the coin."We ask Taylor whether he is feeling anxious, nervous or excited with the release date so close."None of those things," he smiled. "It's more like a hurry up, let's go thing. Get everyone up to speed is really where it's at. There's no anxious or nervousness. I know how it plays out. I know how it sounds, I know how it feels. I can't control what everyone else thinks. I just wanna get it out there so we are all on the same page."In the full interview Taylor discusses Incarnation from a musical point of view, making an album for the first time without Kyle, the decision to write and record this album as a four-piece, some of the things missing without their former bandmate, how Incarnation connects with Divination, the tarot card theme of the album, what to expect, their upcoming Incarnation tour, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing RedHook over Zoom video!RedHook are a fiercely independent, shapeshifting alt-rock foursome from Sydney, Australia who've quickly accumulated a global fanbase and tens of millions of streams through their powerful songwriting and captivating live show.Featuring the core creative duo of Emmy Mack and Craig Wilkinson, two strangers from regional New South Wales whose paths collided after moving to Sydney in 2017, RedHook combine with young gun drummer Alex Powys and seasoned bassist Ned Jankovic to create heartfelt, attitude-filled and relatable alternative rock music that consistently defies classification. The strength of their debut single ‘Minute On Fire' in 2018 was enough to attract the interest of one of the lead promoters of the UK's iconic Download Festival, who swiftly invited RedHook over to play. The band were then snapped up by The Hen House Artist Management (worldwide) and inked booking deals with New World Artists (AUS) and Wasserman (UK/EU), going on to conquer some of Australia's biggest music festival stages (Download, Good Things, Stonefest, BIGSOUND). They also completed their debut international tour (supporting metal titans Three Days Grace across the UK & Europe), launched their own gender diversity-inspired alternative festival in Sydney, 'UsFest', and undertook four complete Australian tours (selling out the Melbourne and Sydney legs of their own debut headline tour). As RedHook's global fan base grew steadily with each single release and live show, many big things followed. The band were named triple j Unearthed feature artist, Kerrang! Radio feature artist and were invited to host the ABC's iconic rage program. They've consistently featured as one of the top 50 most-played artists on triple j Unearthed every year since 2019.2021 saw RedHook release their long-awaited debut EP ‘Bad Decisions' which has ticked over 13 million Spotify streams and had its two lead singles added to rotation on triple j. The record earned praise from Kerrang! (UK), Rock Sound (UK), Rolling Stone (AUS) and many more, even scooping a 2022 AIR Independent Music Awards nomination for best punk EP or album.RedHook continued their steady rise across 2022 with their debut performances at Australia's UNIFY Gathering, Groovin' The Moo and boutique festival Rolling Sets, as well as playing one of the world's most iconic rock festivals Rock AM Ring/Rock im Park in Germany alongside the likes of Green Day and Muse, accompanied by a second tour of Europe supporting The Faim.Their own headline ‘Bring Ya Mates' tour was also a huge success with multiple sold out shows around Australia as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by a mammoth 28-date, two-month-long regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake and a triumphant return the Good Things festival stage alongside Bring Me The Horizon and Deftones, where RedHook made history as the first band to grace the lineup twice. In May 2022, RedHook returned with ‘Jabberwocky' their most gut-wrenching single to date, which was immediately added to triple j high rotation and added to the cover of Spotify's popular ‘All New Rock' Playlist. Follow-up singles ‘SAY' and ‘Soju' Ft. Sly Withers have both since been added to full rotation on triple j.RedHook recently released their long-anticipated debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell!We want to hear from you! Interview by Kris PetersWhen news trickled down that Unify 2023 was not going ahead in its usual format music lovers around the country were left shocked and empty. But that was tempered soon after when organisers revealed a bigger picture with plans to take Unify on the road under the monicker Unify Off The Record. The new format takes in more regional and out of the way areas and has a travelling ensemble of rotating bands to ensure the current cream of Australian talent has more of a chance to feature in the event.Hitting Mackay, Adelaide, Wollongong, Hobart and Frankston, Unify Off The Record 2023 features a diverse line up of Australia's premiere heavy acts including ARIA chart topping Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, Thornhill, Make Them Suffer, Teenage Joans, In Hearts Wake, Alpha Wolf, Ocean Grove, Yours Truly, Void Of Vision, Redhook and more. With the tour kicking off in Mackay last weekend, HEAVY caught up with one of the major players in this weekends round of shows in Adelaide and Wolongong, Ocean Grove."This iteration of Unify I'm really excited about," enthused vocalist Dale Tanner, "because we've been lucky enough to play four Unify festivals as we know it so for this one to be a bit of a curveball to the normal style of Unify I think is going to be really special. Especially that every show is not only at a different city, but each city has a different lineup and different venue so I think that's where it's very unique compared to years gone by where it's everyone coming to the one spot to experience the one festival. I think each show and festival is going to have its own flavour and own thing that makes it unique to each city. As you said there's a great list of Australian bands and an international in Fit For An Autopsy as well but it's a heavily Australian billed lineup across the board and I think to represent heavy music in this format is a great privilage."In the full interview Dale talks more about the new format for Unify, the importance of having predominantly Australian music festivals, where Ocean Grove is playing, who he is most looking forward to playing with, what fans can expect from their set, the chance of them playing any new songs, how advanced the next album is, their limited edition Oddworld 3000 shoe range and how they sold, upcoming plans and more.
Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne metal outfit Void Of Vision earlier this year released the closing chapter to their Chronicles EP trilogy, Chronicles III: Underworld. It was a series of releases that exposed the band like never before, traversing genres from heavy to industrial to something more ambient, showcasing a newer side to the band that was a perfect reflection of the continued growth undertaken by Void Of Vision. After a recent run of shows with Polaris for their tenth anniversary, Void Of Vision fans thought this weekends appearance at Knotfest Australia was going to be the pinnacle of the bands performing year, but plans have changed yet again with the announcement of Unify Off The Record 2023, a travelling, revolving musical showcase that takes in areas away from the usual capital cities.Featuring Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, Thornhill, Make Them Suffer, Teenage Joans, In Hearts Wake, Alpha Wolf, Ocean Grove, Yours Truly, Redhook and more, Unify Off The Record is a majestic celebration of Australian music, with Void Of Vision making two appearances at Mackay and Hobart.Vocalist Jack Bergin joined HEAVY earlier this week to talk about what has already been a stellar year for the band."I think it's cool how they've given every state something special too," he enthused of Unify Off The Record. "You get bragging rights being in a certain city all of a sudden (laughs), which is... it's nice that they have split it up and it's something very different to Unify in general. It's a bit irreplaceable, just the whole general Unify Gathering Festival but this is a nice little gap filler for them. We're stoked to be a part of it, because there's some awesome places. We've never even been to Mackay before! And we have only recently set off a great rapport with Tasmania so we're excited to be going back to Hobart. The Odeon is a beautiful venue. We're all excited."In the full interview, Jack talks more about Unify Off The Record, the importance of having a festival made up of predominantly Australian bands, what it means for the future of Aussie music, Knotfest and what fans can expect, their new live show and how it is shaping up, other developments in the Void Of Vision camp and more.
Good Things Festival not only brings Australian music fans a feast of international talent for their annual December listening pleasure, but they also showcase the best in established and rising local talent as well. Not just with the bands named on the initial bill but also by way of a unique and unexpected finale to the line-up that involved local bands in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane facing off for one last spot in each city.It is a bittersweet situation. On the one hand, it pits mates against each other in a show of public popularity that reflects on the groundwork put in by bands on all levels, but on the other, it is a concept that has to be taken seriously by participating bands with such a prestigious and potentially career starting prize up for grabs.Brisbane winners Apate deservedly take their place on stage just after midday this Sunday, December 4, after emerging triumphant in last week's final. Now, with the competition stage of the journey now behind them, the Brisbane metal outfit can focus on the big stage, with vocalist Zakk Ludwig and guitarist Caleb Patch joining HEAVY to talk about their path to Good Things. We start by asking if they feel they are ready to rise to the challenge of mixing it with the big boys."We're ready brother, trust me," Ludwig said confidently. "We've been looking forward to it for a long time, so we're ready. We're hungry to play. We wanna play, so…""We're used to playing a lot of small rooms and stuff," Patch took over, "but I think our set has the energy to hopefully take a couple of people that haven't seen us and make them think 'oh, I'd love to come see that again'."Although the whole experience will be unlike anything some bands never get a chance to experience, even smaller things like stage sizing has to come into consideration. Bands at the local level are generally used to playing on smaller, indoor stages, so the shift to a massive outdoor expanse is something that can't be overlooked."We actually have experienced something similar to this before," Patch offered. "We won the chance to play a festival when we were first starting out as a band - it was called the Live It Up Festival - and Apate got the chance to open up the festival and In Hearts Wake played and Parkway Drive played. Violent Soho were there… it was a pretty cool experience. That was when we were really young, and we ended up playing to… 3000 kids showed up super early to watch us play which was mental. We did well then, and I think we've been touring quite heavily the last few years as a band with several months playing back to back shows, so I think we're definitely ready. We all play off each other quite well in that sense."In the full interview, the boys talk more about the heats in the lead-up to last week's final, the feeling amongst the other bands, who they are looking forward to sharing the stage with, tailoring set lists to suit crowds, Good Things' focus on Australian music, the deluxe release of their recent album RAGE, heading back into the studio, next year's tour with Dregg and more.

Why has an Aussie heavy metal band gone green? In Hearts Wake have used their passion for ecological advocacy, to push the boundaries of the music industry by recording, releasing and performing their last album, (Kaliyuga), in a radically new and sustainable way. Kaliyuga became the first carbon offset album, pressed on recycled materials to hit the top 5 in the ARIA Australian Albums Chart as it debuted at #3. We're joined by the band's front man Jake Taylor, who also directed a new documentary about the band's eco journey, Green Is The New Black, released yesterday on DocPlay and iTunes. This is a great example of truly believing in your cause and using your art to make the world a better place. Words and interview by Kyra Jade-CoombsIt really is a damn treat when heavier bands grace Cairns with their presence. A genuine sight forsore eyes rocking up at the venue to a sea of metalheads, patiently waiting to UNLEASH. Everythingwas a buzz in the venue, all hands-on deck just how I like it. First, I sat down with Jake to talk aboutIn Hearts Wake's tour ‘Green is the New Black' with Redhook, Pridelands and Banks Arcade.Green is the New Black documentary is due to be released on October 20 th , 2022, through iTunesand DocPlay. This is not to be mistaken for your run of the mill band origin story, it's about shiningthe light into those uncomfortable dark places. Bringing together creatives, experts andprofessionals alike discuss what a more sustainable future looks like for touring musicians. You onlyhave to look back at the last few years of major bushfires, floods, and extreme droughts we inAustralia have been through to see we need to make BIG changes to ensure our future. In thisdocumentary you see what changes In Hearts Wake and other like-minded people are doing tochange the future of touring. “Discover inspiring solutions for a new earth-aligned way forward”. It'svery cool to see a band lending their voice to such an important cause.Accompanying the documentary is a subtly released a huge 20 song soundtrack. According to Jake, the first 5 songs were written before the film, however seemed to match well with the story theywere trying to tell and made the cut. The other 15 tracks were made to the film and scenes, reallycapturing the mood of “this is the bushfires”. Jake explains “We were able to evoke that emotionthrough music, ambiance and all kinds of different instruments.” I wondered how the reception hadbeen for this type of album from In Hearts Wake and I got an answer that surprised me, “It's just outthere like, oh they have new music, but they don't have any context yet. As far as feedback, I thinkpeople have been getting into the songs in a new environment, putting it on late at night to focusand get things done. It brings a new color to what we do”. I personally think it's cool to surprise fanswith new material that can take them to the ‘zen den!'Going on a 27-stop tour and wanting to be environmentally aware of your footprint is no smallmission to take on. Everything you do is leaving a footprint along the way. I asked what it looked liketo do such a monster tour environmentally focused to which Jake replied, “On the side of the stagewe have these big solar batteries that we charge up and get around 4 shows out of which powersour lights on stage and all of our gear, closer to being self-sufficient.” He then went on to explainthat all their receipts for fuel, hotels etc. are all kept so that they can try calculating their emissionsand offset the footprint as much as possible.Trying to be eco-friendly doesn't come cheap. Organic cotton T-shirts & eco vinyl's all cost moremoney to produce in a society where we are ‘trying to make as many as we can, as cheap as we can'.Jake explained, “We could make shoes for $2, sell them for $100. Or make shoes more sustainablyand sell for $60 with better quality. You may pay more now but know that you are getting somethingbetter for the earth an environment”. For me personally, I'm into it! Why wouldn't we look intosuch options? All this environmental talk got me wondering if they got out there to explore Cairns and indulge inthe nature that they are trying so hard to save! Surprisingly Jake explained these regional shows canbe his favorite kind. “Being able to do the waterfalls, getting a good dose of the raw, rugged andawesome nature is the best. As awesome and wonderful as shows can be, sometimes they can meltinto one big experience. The times where we connect with the actual place and get a feel for whatthe place is, is the best”. Who can blame him either? I too would rather be submerged in crystalclear creeks after being cooped up in small rooms and vans! This really got me thinking. It's impressive to see a band not only passionate but ACTUALLY out theredoing their part to make a change. What an amazing example of what being a sustainable musiciancan look like.Punk and hardcore is about having a voice and speaking up for what you believe it. Call me a geek, but I think it's fucking amazing to be Mother Nature's voice! I'm excited to see what else these fellasget up to next.Check out the trailer for Green is the New Black: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9NwCw9OF8YNext on the list was finding Redhook for a yarn! We found a find quiet space for the interview andtoday that was the playground area ironically. Initially I thought I was interviewing Emmy by herlonesome but got the ‘whole hog' so to speak and was stoked Craig, Alex and Ned joined us too!We spoke about things ya'll dying to know about like WHAT THE FUCK IS A JABBERWOCKY?!?!,what's been happening on tour, Redhook's origins and other downright delicious content. Now I've wanted to watch Redhook for quite some and tonight was finally the night. They are thishigh energy ball of fuck yeah and I jumped at the chance to see this Sydney band.Even though this gig was at my least favorite venue, sound isn't great, and you have to peep aroundpillars just to see the band, I knew that it would not matter, and they would kick ass.Firstly, the boys came out and starting G'ing up the crowd. Not before long Emmy comes running outlike a bat out of hell ready to fuck everyone's faces off and goes straight into ‘Only Bones'. Theshowmanship of Redhook was impressive. Everyone was engaging with the crowd and gettingeveryone moving like a puppet master.I just remember watching them going “holy shit, there's so much going on in perfect chaos”. I swearI can hear touches of Korean Metal, rap and all sorts of other Easter eggs popping up. It's a fuckingride and I was strapped in. At one point there was a Saxophone circle pit Redhook ever so kindly“ticked off our bucket list” for us.Something that stood out to me, and I did want to mention, was the fact that Emmy did a shoutoutto survivors of sexual assault before playing Jabberwocky, the crowd cheered her on and it was anice feeling. Que fuckface standing at the front of the stage pretending to grope her whole body likean absolute grub whilst she's speaking. You are the problem buddy. Listen to the words the womanis saying you neanderthal.Anyway, quickly becoming one of my favorite things about being a music journo' is meeting bandswho will start off with this calm, soft spoken and quite often shy demeanor. When you finally get tosee them perform on stage and bring to their show to life and this fucking beast presents itself… ittruly makes me smile. Seeing musos absolutely lose themselves into an actual metal gremlin is mybread and butter, I live for that shit. Be yourself and be proud!!I managed to pull my shit together and get audio for this one, so sink your teeth in and enjoy!Redhook are a fucking time! If you get the chance to see them, DO.
Just because Darwin is miles away from the major entertainment hubs of Australia it doesn't mean the locals have to miss out. Not when you have bands like We Burn Bridges obliterating stages and flying the flag for metal at the top end of the country. We Burn Bridges are on the cusp of unleashing their latest single Death Curse which is out on September 1 but will be premiered exclusively in HEAVY at 10 am on Wednesday, August 31.The track sees We Burn Bridges explore fresh territory, combining the expansive sounds of nu metal with guest vocals from ex band member and rap artist BxK.Two of the band in Manolis and Jake sat down with HEAVY earlier this week to discuss the new single."We originally set out to write a rap ish, nu metal ish kind of track with our good friend and ex band member BxK,” Jake started, “so we thought we would get him on board and get a bit of that rap attitude involved with the song. It's something very new for the band. We've never done anything like that in particular. Obviously, we've got lots of heavy elements in the song but that's pretty standard for us."In the full interview, the boys talk more about the new direction for the band, combing metal and rap and the challenges involved, the lyrical content of Death Curse and what it deals with, supporting In Hearts Wake and what they took out of it, promoting music in Darwin and more.Intro track THE VIOLENT INZIDENT 'Nu Metal'

Australia is turning up the volume on environmentalism for the world to hear! If you turned on your favorite music radio station, would you know we're in a crisis? Only 1% of songs in National Australian premier radio station Triple J's Hottest 100 (2.5M+ votes) over the last 5 years directly referenced environmental issues…and that's following mass bleaching of The Great Barrier Reef, The devastating Australian Bushfires of 2019-2020, AND a recent study before COP26 that reported 75% of Australians are concerned about climate change. So why is Australian mainstream music so culturally disconnected from a population overwhelmingly environmentalist? We know artists, bands, and musicians have been and are currently creating environmentally-minded music, so how do we get those songs into the mainstream? Our guest today, Edwina Floch, recently launched The Environmental Music Prize - A new $AU 20,000 prize that amplifies the voices of artists who inspire action for climate and conservation. The prize launched during the UN Climate Summit, and it's a global first and a call-to-action for artists to create and submit powerful music videos that celebrate nature and encourage us to defend it. Every movement needs anthems. The search is on! In Hearts Wake are a band that believes in the gift of giving. Not just through their music, but in the sense of giving something back to the world via music and the planet that sustains us via action. They are a band with a message – but one which doesn't feel the need to overtly preach to get their message across.Actions speak louder than words, and in the case of In Hearts Wake those actions and many and varied. With the nation finally starting to re-open to live music and touring, In Hearts Wake are gearing up for their long waited return to the stage, starting with the series of Full Tilt shows with Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, Frenzal Rhomb and many more over January, February and March of next year.Vocalist Jake Taylor joined HEAVY to chat about the festival and being back on the road."I think everyone's itching, but also mindful not to pick the scab too much,” he laughed, “just in case the world throws us another transformer."With the current state of international borders being closed, festivals such as Full Tilt are comprised only of bands native to these shores. Even though it is a situation forced upon us by current global events, it is still one which benefits our local bands immensely."It's essential,” Taylor agreed, “especially right now because international bands can't come here. It's by necessity, but that means Australian bands can't go overseas as well, so... All we can do right now is support and water our own garden. If we're gonna keep it alive it's everything."In the full interview, Jake talks more about Full Tilt and the role In Hearts Wake will be playing, the eclectic line-up and how important that is to a festival, bands on the bill that will be stirring the pot, making music with a message and more.

‘In Hearts Wake' front man Jake Taylor is not your ordinary metalcore vocalist, he is a survivalist and a primitive fire teacher with a deep love of, and connection to the natural world with a need to protect it. I myself am very proud of this episode as Jake really shows up in this podcast as the unique and powerful man he is.

The Mosh Zone Episode #133. This week we chat with Jake of In Hearts Wake about the origins of the band, the early years, joining UNFD, making their mark in Australia, being a band with a important message for listeners, breaking into the international market, stories behind their discography, releasing an album when you can't tour and much more!!
With their 5th album Kaliyuga, Byron Bay band In Hearts Wake have made a record to help save the planet. Planned as an album to be entirely carbon offset, the group went to extreme and exhausting lengths to achieve that. Having witnessed firsthand the fires that ravaged both California and Australia, the band felt they had no other choice but to carbon offset the recording and producing of the end product. Singer Jake Taylor explained to Richard Kingsmill the concept behind the title, the influence of Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, how they calculated and covered the LP’s CO2 footprint, and why Jake’s father and ex-partner both appear on the album.

Every so often, a great Australian band crosses your path and you've just gotta check them out because you never know, you could be missing out on your next fav discovery and that's how we feel about ADKINS from Tasmania who popped up with their debut album The Wrong Side of Fame and have since won us over. The boys grew up with old school metal loving parents and that influence has continued on through their music as frontman Sam Adkins discusses on this week's podcast. Podcast host Browny dives deep into the band's early beginnings, their diverse debut release and if their band name is a situation akin to that of Bon Jovi (named after the last name of the frontman). Get to know the lads and hear a collection of tunes from their new album. We also take a look at Chester Bennington's first band Grey Daze and their new album Amends, as well as Seether's Latin influenced new album Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum and what it means. There's also throwbacks from Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Stone Sour and Metallica, New Music from Evanescence and Bring Me The Horizon + heaps more! #WoSUATW #ADKINS #AustralianBands #TheWrongSideOfFame #HardRock #Grunge #Metal #GreyDaze #ChesterBennington #PearlJam #Evanescence #BreakingBenjamin #Audioslave #StoneSour #CoreyTaylor #Metallica #Seether #BringMeTheHorizon #BMTH #InHeartsWake #WallOfSoundAU #Podcast #MusicPodcast
In Hearts Wake chat to HEAVY Magazine about trying to make a carbon neutral album.
Higgo caught up with lead singer and songwriter for In Hearts Wake, Jake Taylor via skype recently to talk about their upcoming album Kaliyuga, the films clips we've seen so far including the very clever clip for Hellbringer featuring Jamie from Polaris. They also speak about how the band is coping during in a weird time, how metal is perceived, planting trees, sustainability, carbon offsetting their new album and how they did that, and lots more. Jake is an awesome guy to speak to, I learnt a lot, it opened my mind to more. He's a ripper. - HIggo

There's no other band on this earth quite like The Ghost Inside. They've overcome one of the most tragic events ANYONE could ever go through and they've returned to the music scene with what we've dubbed the PERFECT comeback album which is out on Friday and to celebrate, we grabbed drummer Andrew Tkaczyk for a chat all about it. Join podcast host Browny as their pair discuss the tragedy the band overcame, their slight deviation from the metalcore genre that made them a household name and, despite the curveball life threw at them, how they jumped back on the musical horse and refused to give up. Turns out Andrew is also a mad keen horror movie fan and you have to hear about some of the incredible memorabilia he's collected over the years, including one piece which manages to scare the shit out of anyone who sees it for the first time. We also take a look at the chaos across America surrounding the wrongful death of George Floyd, the serious issue in our own backyard with over 400 deaths of Indigenous Australians in police custody (which have gone unanswered) and the tracks I Prevail, Fever 333 and Sum 41 released over the past week which are more important now, than ever. There's also New Music from Emmure, In Hearts Wake, Attila and Northlane, throwbacks from The Beautiful Monument, A Day To Remember, Bring Me The Horizon and more! #WoSUATW #TheGhostInside #TGI #EpitaphRecords #InHeartsWake #Polaris #AlphaWolf #Emmure #Attila #BringMeTheHorizon #BMTH #Northlane #TheBeautifulMonument #ADTR #ADayToRemember #IPrevail #Fever333 #Sum41 #TheShowMustBePaused #InThisTogether2020 #WallOfSoundAU

When a band grabs your attention the second they take to the stage and you're stuck in metal awe for the duration of their set, you HAVE to follow them up and see what they're all about afterwards hey! Well, that's the story behind how we discovered DREGG last year at Big Sound. The band who cross genres more then we cross borders these days have been fats making a name for themselves in Australia with their wacky on-stage antics, costumes and hardcore sound which, caught the attention of Epitaph Records who signed the lads not too long ago. This week frontman Chris Mackertich joins the podcast to chat all about their signing amidst a world struck down by COVID-19 and what this means for them moving forward. He also discusses the band's plan to not follow suit of what other acts are doing, to stand out from the pack and be themselves + his ideas for creatives (and anyone else stuck in self-isolation) to pass the time and make the most of this situation. Podcast host Browny also takes a look at the coronavirus parody band Vermicide Violence who teamed up with YouTube star Jarrod Alonge to release their pandemic deathcore anthem which went viral amongst the heavy music community! This week, Dezeray sits down with Pearson and Mel to talk about refugee solidarity networks. But first, in lieu of a current events section, Pearson and Mel chat about the French term "apellism" and give a preview of what's to come in Episode 50 of Coffee with Comrades. After a brief discussion of local struggles in FL, the dialogue zooms outward, building toward regional issues at the U.S.-Mexico Border before evolving into a conversation about international stories from time Dez spent in Palestine and France! We talk a bit about Dez's graphic novel and offer some ideas of how YOU can get involved in popular struggles to provide sanctuary and asylum to those fleeing the violence and destabilization so often engendered by capitalism, climate change, and U.S. imperialism. Dez has been on Coffee with Comrades in the past (albeit, briefly) when Pearson drove down to Tampa, FL to visit the Occupy ICE encampment at a detention facility. You can check out that interview at the beginning of Episode 5 of Coffee with Comrades. Stick around 'till the very end of the episode for a brief, out-of-context blooper in which we all wax poetic about the efficacy of the word "fuck." UNIFY Gathering. An experience and a half for heavy music fans who travel from all over Australia (and the world) to attend the sleepy country town of Tarwin Lower in Regional Victoria to see bands of various genres playing their hearts out and then joining in on the festivities with punters across the venue. This year was no exception. This time around for us, we brought along our Wall of Sound UNIFY Intern winner Adam Rice who took out the competition and won the chance to interview some of the bands from the lineup and enjoy a weekend covering the event for us. How'd he go? Well, you'll have to listen to the collection of interviews and tracks we have at your disposal, but be warned, there is well over 4 Hours of Fun this year (as we wanted to cover as many bands as we could for you and this podcast special). So strap yourselves in and get ready to get up close and personal with the likes of Every Time I Die, Underoath, Karnivool, Hand of Mercy, Hellions, Dream State, Ocean Grove, The Plot In You, In Hearts Wake, Pagan, Thornhill, Drown This City, Gravemind, Falcifer, Saviour and Ocean Sleeper as Browny and Intern Adam Do UNIFY Gathering 2019. Interview Times Hellions – 8:29 Dream State – 21:41 Ocean Sleeper – 35:31 Drown This City – 47:42 Ocean Grove – 57:36 Karnivool – 1:20:41 In Hearts Wake – 1:36:11 The Plot In You – 1:50:00 Saviour – 2:02:27 Hand of Mercy – 2:15:05 Falcifer – 2:25:34 Gravemind – 2:39:58 Pagan – 2:57:25 Thornhill - 3:15:09 Underoath - 3:27:44 Every Time I Die - 3:45:09 #WoSUATW #UNIFY2019 #UNIFYGathering #WoSDoesUnify #WoSUNIFYIntern #EveryTimeIDie #ETID #Underoath #Karnivool #HandOfMercy #Hellions #DreamState #OceanGrove #ThePlotInYou #InHeartsWake #Pagan #DrownThisCity #Thornhill #Gravemind #Falcifer #Saviour #OceanSleeper #Australianbands #HeavyMetal #Hardcore #Metalcore #PopPunk #ProgMetal #Podcast #MusicPodcast #Interviews #WallOfSoundAU

Welcome everyone to the Ian Hates Warped Tour Conversations! I know it's not summer anymore and that means the touring Warped Tour has ended (perhaps forever), but hey, it takes a while to get these episodes out, haha. Also, why put out Warped Tour material when everyone else was doing it at the same time? Not talking about Warped Tour all the time helps you miss it! Distance makes the heart grow stronger or something else emo like that...Anyway, Ian loves Warped Tour and this was the first year he was able to do in-person Warped Tour interviews! All interviews took place at the Mansfield date of Warped Tour on July 27th at the Xfinity Center. Ian was also not told what interviews he had until he showed up at the venue. That brought a lot of excitement, haha. For more information, you can listen to the Ian Hates Warped Tour Recap Special. But, to be brief, festival interviews are much different than what Ian normally does on Ian Hates Conversations. Everyone is put in one room. Everyone is talking at the same time. You're in a rush, both interviewer and band because you have a time limit and set times to get to. AND, there are bands playing right outside the room! Haha. The only reason you need to know all this is to, of course, set the mood, but also so you realize why these are live, raw, and unedited! The ninth conversation of the day was Jake Taylor of In Hearts Wake!Check the interview out and make sure to support Jake and In Hearts Wake by following the links below:In Hearts Wake - WebsiteIn Hearts Wake - InstagramIn Hearts Wake - FacebookIn Hearts Wake - TwitterIn Hearts Wake - SpotifyIn Hearts Wake - Apple MusicMany thanks to Jake for taking the time out from the busy and tiring Warped Tour schedule to be on Ian Hates Warped Tour Conversations! April hinaus!
Australia is home to a plethora of upcoming heavy bands and it is our absolute pleasure to feature one of the latest (and highly recommended) bands to cause a stir, **Thornhill **as this week's special guest co-host band on **_Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall_**. Join podcast host **Browny** as he chats with frontman **Jacob** **Charlton** and guitarist **Ethan** **McCann** about the band's origins, their recent signing to **UNFD** and how they intend to not make **Void of Vision** look like idiots after they collectively nominated the boys for being the next big band to watch during our crashing of **_UNIFY 2018_** last month. **Thornhill** had some big news last week when they finally released their new **_Butterfly EP_** and you better believe we're playing a few tracks from it, including new single '**Reptile**'. Talking about big news, Sydney hardcore heroes **Vices** also surprised unknowing fans by playing their last ever show over the weekend. **Browny** also tracked down guitarist **Calum ****Waldegrave** to find out what the deal is with the band calling it quits after just releasing **_Now That I Have Seen I Am Responsible_**, one of their best albums to date last year. There's also New Music for **blessthefall**, **Endless Heights** and Mackay's **Sanctum of Solace**, throwbacks from **In Hearts Wake, Of Mice & Men, Buried In Verona** and **Straight Line Stitch** + '**Two Songs That Changed Me**' featuring a double play from **Enter** **Shikari**. #WoSUATW #Thornhill #JacobCharlton #EthanMcCann #UNFD #AustralianBands #Hardcore #PostHardcore #InHeartsWake #blessthefall #OMandM #OfMiceAndMen #BuriedInVerona #Vices #CalumWaldegrave #EndlessHeights #ViciousPleasure #VoidOfVision #UNIFY #EnterShikari #AFlashFloodOfColour #StraightLineStitch #Thursday #Emo #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

PHOTO: @isahermit On this episode, I speak with Chris Roetter, vocalist for the band Like Moths To Flames. The band is currently wrapping up a tour with Fit For A King, In Hearts Wake, and Phinehas, and is supporting their brand new full-length, "Dark Divine", out now via Rise Records. Chris is someone I've always wanted to have on the podcast, and I'm excited we were finally able to make that happen. He gets very honest about where the band has been over the last couple years, and lets everyone know what to expect from here on out.
