That's really all I've devoted my life to. (3:19) • I definitely recommend finishing school. (5:36) • It doesn't happen overnight. You go to a party here, a party there. Then you're 26, 28. The habit thing. I didn't want to be a part of the system. I was just all about rebelling. (7:40) • That was the real turning point [when facing jail time] I had to look around and say “Alright, what are you doin?” (10:02) • [I got into the Guinness Book of World Records] It was this year. (13:30) • It's nice to get the pat on the back, but ultimately, it was about much more than that. It was about giving up the drinking, focusing on something positive. I did the Skate Across America to raise money for charity. (13:40) • When you're at the start line it's all fun. Everyone's there filming, talking, it's exciting. Then you push off, and then a couple of miles in, you're like “Oh, I'm gonna be doing this for the next 2 months. (18:32) • [I completed the entire distance with] 1 board; I didn't change the wheels or the bearings, or anything. (23:56) • Even if it's way slower than you normally go, if you keep treading that ground, you're gonna make it there. (28:55) • I figured out that if I skate head-on to trucks, like tractor trailers; they're coming at me at 70 mph. If I made myself seen, I could take over the whole lane. So, I would basically play chicken with them, and wave them out of the way. (30:14) • [At the finish] The mayor put his hand up for a high five. I skated right past him, I didn't even notice. (35:23) • “If you keep pushing, you're gonna get there.” (36:17) • When you're out there alone for so many hours, all the noise of society and people's opinions kinda fades away. (36:26) • When you're left to yourself, you realize how simple life is. (36:35) • Quitting drinking and focusing on my hobby turned my life around. (41:34) • Whatever you're most interested in or gets you excited – just pursue that. (41:52) • If I can help to make this life a little bit better, that's a win. A lot of people are wondering if things in LA would look different if Rick Caruso had won the mayoral race against Karen Bass in 2022. If he had been mayor when devastating fires began in the city last month, would he have prevented them from consuming about 40,000 acres, which is more than twice the area of Manhattan? At the time he ran, many quietly supported the billionaire real estate mogul—scared to come out publicly against the candidate backed by Barack Obama and celebrities like Shonda Rhimes and Arianna Grande. But now many in LA are texting me, saying they wish he had won. Indeed, some of these lifelong Democrats are now saying that they are Republicans, or the very least they're whatever Karen Bass isn't. Caruso may have lost then, but he's acting now like a de facto public official, launching and funding a nonprofit he calls Steadfast LA. He's leveraged his connections to get companies from Netflix to Amazon to J.P. Morgan to help restore critical infrastructure in the city, he's worked on how to quickly rebuild homes with the help of AI, and he's figuring out ways to use America's most advanced technology to prevent future fires. Now, everyone in California is watching to see what Caruso does next. Will he run for mayor again? Or perhaps even governor of California? Is fantasy football part of the good life, is it just a colossal waste of time – or worse? This podcast is ordinarily about work, but this episode is about play, and whether any redeeming consequences come from the work that a $30 billion industry of analysts, podcasters, pundits, gamers, and other fantasy nerds put into it. To put that question to the test, in Fall 2024, 11 honors students at the University of St. Thomas and Professor Christopher Wong Michaelson formed a fantasy football league for a class called “Fantasy Football and the Good Life.” While playing fantasy football against each other, they also discussed ethical questions in fantasy sports: from fairness to conflicts of interest, racism to sexism in sports, collusion and punishment, and more. For the final class assignment, students had to select and debate five propositions examined over the semester. The propositions concern the following topics: success, punishment, fair play, luck, and gambling. Who won and who lost each debate doesn't matter any more than who won and lost on the fantasy football field. To judge the arguments, student judges were joined by one celebrity guest judge: University of St. Thomas Head Football Coach and multiple coach of the year award-winner, Glenn Caruso. Listen and learn about "Fantasy Football and the Good Life." Caruso's early experience with photography and film began at home, where he learned to operate a projector and watch films. The film "The Magnificent Ambersons," directed by Orson Welles, sparked his interest in lighting and cinematography and inspired him to pursue a career in the film industry. He started a film production company at 15, making commercials and industrial documentaries, and later joined the union as a still photographer. His journey in the film industry was shaped by his father's equipment, his mother's support, and his own passion for the art of filmmaking. Phillip Caruso had a good working relationship with Sharon Stone, who never asked him to leave the set. He says that actors sometimes ask the still photographer to leave if they don't trust them, know them, think they are incompetent, or if the photographer thinks that the lighting is set up for them and not the film. Caruso was once called in to replace a still photographer who had been fired, after which the director expressed relief that he didn't have to worry about the stills for the movie anymore.
