Rick Caruso's $100 million interior rebuild — plus environmental cleanup and a full renovation after the January 2025 Palisades Fire — wraps with an official reopening Saturday, August 15. Seventy percent of the businesses are returning, restaurants included. For a neighborhood that lost so much, this one actually feels like a milestone.

Anthony Caruso, head of ETFs and product strategy at Nomura Asset Management International, says that while artificial intelligence is driving the market, it is also creating opportunities through its struggles, whether that is by punishing companies in industries like software, or forcing capital expenditures and more. He notes that there are strategies in playing the tight supply chains, particularly if investors are willing to consider emerging markets investments. Atthe same time, Caruso — who does not have recession in his outlook for the next year — says that with interest rates higher for longer, investors should take advantage of fixed-income to balance out a portfolio and help them ride out the volatility story. Paula Fleming, chief marketing officer for the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont, discusses savings strategies and the importance of knowing the rules for special days, weeks and weekends when states rescind their sales tax. There's one of those this coming weekend in Massachusetts — but Fleming notes that about half of all states have had some sort of tax-relief day in the last few years and 20 are holding them in 2026 — and Chuck discusses his shopping strategy and planned purchase to capture the discount on a big expense. In the Market Call, Daniel Dusina, chief investment officer at Blue Chip Partners discusses "unappreciated quality stocks" and how even some big names that have run up still qualify.

In this episode of Wash Talk: The Carwash Podcast, host Meagan Kusek sits down with Harry Caruso, founder of Car Wash Advisory, for a candid assessment of where carwash mergers and acquisitions stand heading into the back half of 2026. Recorded live at The Car Wash Show™, the conversation opens with Caruso's frank take on the current deal environment: Transaction counts are on pace to be the lowest in about a decade, not because the industry is less attractive, but because it has matured past the frenzied growth phase of recent years.  Caruso explains that many of the most active buyers from the last decade are now approaching the end of their investment horizons and pulling back. At the same time, a large share of the best-performing carwashes have already been acquired, and newer sites haven't yet built the track record needed to be acquirable at scale. He notes that for operators with five to 15 sites considering a sale, the message is straightforward: The window is open now and conditions are unlikely to improve over the next two years.  The episode also covers the significance of Mister Car Wash's return to private ownership. Caruso closes with a reminder that declining transaction volume is not the same as a declining industry and that carwash mergers and acquisitions remain active for operators positioned to move.

I've decided to make it Tenor Week here on Countermelody. Earlier this week, we heard Charles Kullman in a smattering of live and studio recordings. Back in November, as I was collating material for the arie antiche episode, which featured more than a century's worth of great singers, I noticed one singer who frequently programmed such (restyled) Italian baroque songs in his concerts and recordings, the Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli, considered by many to be the greatest tenor, Italian or otherwise, since Caruso. I confess that, in all my years of listening, Gigli was a singer to whose charms I had remained mostly indifferent. But then I began to listen to his recordings of arie antiche, many of them made in the last decade of his career, and I was charmed and delighted by his performances. There is a freshness of voice, an evenness of scale, a headiness of timbre, and, most of all, a sheer delight in singing, that is completely infectious. So today I have compiled most, if not all, of his recordings of this material for an episode of pure vocal escapism. Here is Gigli, all his problematic qualities set aside, singing the songs and arias of Carissimi, Caldara, Cesti, Marcello, Scarlatti, and Bononcini, among others, in a way that invites us to leave our troubled world for a few moments and partake of his vocal stylings of these delectable faux-Baroque bocconcini.
